Developments In Multivariate Post Quantum Cryptography., Jeremy Robert Vates Aug 2018

Developments In Multivariate Post Quantum Cryptography., Jeremy Robert Vates

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since Shor's algorithm was introduced in 1994, cryptographers have been working to develop cryptosystems that can resist known quantum computer attacks. This push for quantum attack resistant schemes is known as post quantum cryptography. Specifically, my contributions to post quantum cryptography has been to the family of schemes known as Multivariate Public Key Cryptography (MPKC), which is a very attractive candidate for digital signature standardization in the post quantum collective for a wide variety of applications. In this document I will be providing all necessary background to fully understand MPKC and post quantum cryptography as a whole. Then, I …

Fast Adjustable Npn Classification Using Generalized Symmetries, Xuegong Zhou, Lingli Wang, Peiyi Zhao, Alan Mishchenko Aug 2018

Fast Adjustable Npn Classification Using Generalized Symmetries, Xuegong Zhou, Lingli Wang, Peiyi Zhao, Alan Mishchenko

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

NPN classification of Boolean functions is a powerful technique used in many logic synthesis and technology mapping tools in FPGA design flows. Computing the canonical form of a function is the most common approach of Boolean function classification. In this paper, a novel algorithm for computing NPN canonical form is proposed. By exploiting symmetries under different phase assignments and higher-order symmetries of Boolean functions, the search space of NPN canonical form computation is pruned and the runtime is dramatically reduced. The algorithm can be adjusted to be a slow exact algorithm or a fast heuristic algorithm with lower quality. For …

Don't Ask The Baby To Do Calculus: Thoughts From An Early-Career Math Mama, Caitlin Krul Jul 2018

Don't Ask The Baby To Do Calculus: Thoughts From An Early-Career Math Mama, Caitlin Krul

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

I very recently became a math mama. In my desperate search for patterns and structure in those first few weeks, my husband told me, "She's only three weeks old; we can't expect her to be doing calculus homework." I suppose he was right. I am working towards tenure and finding a new balance between teaching and family, all while trying to not lose sight of who I am. My personal challenges range from the logistics of being a nursing mother in a shared office to feelings of being seen as less adequate in my job if I present myself as …

Inquiry Based Learning: A Teaching And Parenting Opportunity, Aliza Steurer Jul 2018

Inquiry Based Learning: A Teaching And Parenting Opportunity, Aliza Steurer

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this paper, I discuss what appears to be a new perspective on inquiry based learning (IBL) by describing its parallels with parenting. IBL is a student-centered learning method involving collaborative work on carefully sequenced exercises, oral and written communication of solutions, and peer review. Students create their own knowledge and present their ideas, and the instructor acts as a facilitator. The parallels between IBL and parenting include a growth mindset, emphasizing process over outcome, learning from mistakes, learning how to get unstuck, and deconstructing tasks. IBL and parenting also involve similar social interactions, such as responding to difficult questions …

Quantitative Literacy And Civic Virtue, William Briggs Jul 2018

Quantitative Literacy And Civic Virtue, William Briggs

Numeracy

Mathematics educators are occasionally called upon to justify the existence or the offering of quantitative literacy courses. This paper argues that effective quantitative literacy courses have different goals than algebra courses and are legitimate alternatives to algebra courses for non-STEM students. Furthermore, quantitative literacy courses affirm the historic relationship between citizenship and education. In today’s world of proliferating news sources, social media, and fake news, quantitative literacy has become an essential component of the long-held ideal of civic virtue.

Generalized Fock Spaces And The Stirling Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Motke Porat Jun 2018

Generalized Fock Spaces And The Stirling Numbers, Daniel Alpay, Motke Porat

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Bargmann-Fock-Segal space plays an important role in mathematical physics and has been extended into a number of directions. In the present paper, we imbed this space into a Gelfand triple. The spaces forming the Fréchet part (i.e., the space of test functions) of the triple are characterized both in a geometric way and in terms of the adjoint of multiplication by the complex variable, using the Stirling numbers of the second kind. The dual of the space of test functions has a topological algebra structure, of the kind introduced and studied by the first named author and Salomon.

An Ishikawa-Type Iterative Algorithm For Solving A Generalized Variational Inclusion Problem Involving Difference Of Monotone Operators, Mohd Ishtyak, Rais Ahmad Jun 2018

An Ishikawa-Type Iterative Algorithm For Solving A Generalized Variational Inclusion Problem Involving Difference Of Monotone Operators, Mohd Ishtyak, Rais Ahmad

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study a generalized variational inclusion problem involving difference of monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. We established equivalence between the generalized variational inclusion problem and a fixed point problem. We establish an Ishikawa type iterative algorithm for solving a generalized variational inclusion problem involving difference of monotone operators, which is more general than Mann-type iterative algorithm. An existence result as well as a convergence result are proved separately. The problem of this paper is more general than many existing problems in the literature. Several special cases of generalized variational inclusion problem involving difference of monotone operators are …

Simulating The Electrical Properties Of Random Carbon Nanotube Networks Using A Simple Model Based On Percolation Theory, Roberto Abril Valenzuela Jun 2018

Simulating The Electrical Properties Of Random Carbon Nanotube Networks Using A Simple Model Based On Percolation Theory, Roberto Abril Valenzuela

Physics

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been subject to extensive research towards their possible applications in the world of nanoelectronics. The interest in carbon nanotubes originates from their unique variety of properties useful in nanoelectronic devices. One key feature of carbon nanotubes is that the chiral angle at which they are rolled determines whether the tube is metallic or semiconducting. Of main interest to this project are devices containing a thin film of randomly arranged carbon nanotubes, known as carbon nanotube networks. The presence of semiconducting tubes in a CNT network can lead to a switching effect when the film is electro-statically …

A Comparison Of The Product Topology On Two Trees With The Tree Topology On The Concatenation Of Two Trees, Katlyn Kathleen Cox May 2018

A Comparison Of The Product Topology On Two Trees With The Tree Topology On The Concatenation Of Two Trees, Katlyn Kathleen Cox

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A game tree is a nonempty set of sequences, closed under subsequences (i.e., if p ∈ T

and p extends q, then q ∈ T). If T is a game tree, then there is a natural topology on [T],

the set of paths through T. In this study we consider two types of topological spaces, both

constructed from game trees. The first is constructed by taking the Cartesian product of

two game trees, T and S: [T] × [S]. The second is constructed by the concatenation of two

game trees, T and S: [T ∗ S]. The goal of our …

Developmental Mathematics: A Quantitative Investigation Of Instructor Classification As Related To Student Success, Brittany A. Fish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine what type of predictive power exists between an instructor’s employment classification, student gender, student race, and first-generation status on a student’s academic success in developmental mathematics, as measured by final semester grades at a regionally comprehensive state university in Texas between fall 2013 and spring 2017. Data were collected from the institution under study and the sample population included 1932 unique student observations. The data collected in this study were analyzed through a binary logistic regression model to determine whether an instructor’s employment classification, student gender, student race, and first-generation status …

Examples Of Solving The Wave Equation In The Hyperbolic Plane, Cooper Ramsey May 2018

Examples Of Solving The Wave Equation In The Hyperbolic Plane, Cooper Ramsey

Senior Honors Theses

The complex numbers have proven themselves immensely useful in physics, mathematics, and engineering. One useful tool of the complex numbers is the method of conformal mapping which is used to solve various problems in physics and engineering that involved Laplace’s equation. Following the work done by Dr. James Cook, the complex numbers are replaced with associative real algebras. This paper focuses on another algebra, the hyperbolic numbers. A solution method like conformal mapping is developed with solutions to the one-dimensional wave equation. Applications of this solution method revolve around engineering and physics problems involving the propagation of waves. To conclude, …

Reflection Functors In The Representation Theory Of Quivers, Danika Van Niel May 2018

Reflection Functors In The Representation Theory Of Quivers, Danika Van Niel

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The paper "Coxeter Functors and Gabriel's Theorem" written by I.N. Bernstein, I.M. Gel'fand, and V.A. Ponomarev explores the concept of reflection functors. A thorough proof of several results used by Bernstein et al in their paper is presented. The focus is on the category of representations and reflection functors, both negative and positive. The quadratic form is the bridge between the results on quivers and the techniques of Lie algebras. The Dynkin diagrams mentioned in Gabriel's Theorem are discussed.

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Adolescent and young adult binge drinking is strongly associated with perceived social norms and the drinking behavior that occurs within peer networks. The extent to which an individual is influenced by the behavior of others may depend upon that individual’s resistance to peer influence (RPI).

Methods: Students in their first semester of college (N = 1323; 54.7% female, 57% White, 15.1% Hispanic) reported on their own binge drinking, and the perceived binge drinking of up to 10 important peers in the first-year class. Using network autocorrelation models, we investigated cross-sectional relationships between participant’s binge drinking frequency and the perceived …

Coincidence Of Bargaining Solutions And Rationalizability In Epistemic Games, Todd Stambaugh May 2018

Coincidence Of Bargaining Solutions And Rationalizability In Epistemic Games, Todd Stambaugh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Chapter 1: In 1950, John Nash proposed the Bargaining Problem, for which a solution is a function that assigns to each space of possible utility assignments a single point in the space, in some sense representing the ’fair’ deal for the agents involved. Nash provided a solution of his own, and several others have been presented since then, including a notable solution by Ehud Kalai and Meir Smorodinsky. In chapter 1, a complete account is given for the conditions under which the two solutions will coincide for two player bargaining scenarios.

Chapter 2: In the same year, Nash …

On Coding For Partial Erasure Channels, Carolyn Mayer May 2018

On Coding For Partial Erasure Channels, Carolyn Mayer

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Error correcting codes have been essential to the technology we use in everyday life in digital storage, wireless communication, barcodes, and much more. Different channel models are used for different types of communication (for example, if information is sent to one person or to many people) and different types of errors. Partial erasure channels were recently introduced to model applications in which some information remains after an erasure event. These remnants of information may be used to increase the chances of successful decoding. We introduce a new partial erasure channel in which partial erasures correspond to individual bit erasures in …

Italian Domination In Complementary Prisms, Haley D. Russell May 2018

Italian Domination In Complementary Prisms, Haley D. Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let $G$ be any graph and let $\overline{G}$ be its complement. The complementary prism of $G$ is formed from the disjoint union of a graph $G$ and its complement $\overline{G}$ by adding the edges of a perfect matching between the corresponding vertices of $G$ and $\overline{G}$. An Italian dominating function on a graph $G$ is a function such that $f \, : \, V \to \{ 0,1,2 \}$ and for each vertex $v \in V$ for which $f(v)=0$, it holds that $\sum_{u \in N(v)} f(u) \geq 2$. The weight of an Italian dominating function is the value $f(V)=\sum_{u \in V(G)}f(u)$. …

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon May 2018

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The class of nonassociative right hoops, or narhoops for short, is defined as a subclass of right-residuated magmas, and is shown to be a variety. These algebras generalize both right quasigroups and right hoops, and we characterize the subvarieties in which the operation x ^^ y = (x/y)y is associative and/or commutative. Narhoops with a left unit are proved to be integral if and only if ^ is commutative, and their congruences are determined by the equivalence class of the left unit. We also prove that the four identities defining narhoops are independent.

Text Classification Of Installation Support Contract Topic Models For Category Management, William C. Sevier Mar 2018

Text Classification Of Installation Support Contract Topic Models For Category Management, William C. Sevier

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force Installation Contracting Agency manages nearly 18 percent of total Air Force spend, equating to approximately 57 billion dollars. To improve strategic sourcing, the organization is beginning to categorize installation-support spend and assign accountable portfolio managers to respective spend categories. A critical task in this new strategic environment includes the appropriate categorization of Air Force contracts into newly created, manageable spend categories. It has been recognized that current composite categories have the opportunity to be further distinguished into sub-categories leveraging text analytics on the contract descriptions. Furthermore, upon establishing newly constructed categories, future contracts must be classified into these …
