The Martingale Approach To Financial Mathematics, Jordan M. Rowley Jun 2019

The Martingale Approach To Financial Mathematics, Jordan M. Rowley

Master's Theses

In this thesis, we will develop the fundamental properties of financial mathematics, with a focus on establishing meaningful connections between martingale theory, stochastic calculus, and measure-theoretic probability. We first consider a simple binomial model in discrete time, and assume the impossibility of earning a riskless profit, known as arbitrage. Under this no-arbitrage assumption alone, we stumble upon a strange new probability measure Q, according to which every risky asset is expected to grow as though it were a bond. As it turns out, this measure Q also gives the arbitrage-free pricing formula for every asset on our market. In …

Market Research On Student Concert Attendance At Bgsu's College Of Musical Arts, Mary Solomon May 2019

Market Research On Student Concert Attendance At Bgsu's College Of Musical Arts, Mary Solomon

Honors Projects

Bowling Green State University boasts a well established College of Musical Arts which holds concerts performed by esteemed faculty, prestigious guest artists, and students. The school hosts these events in Kobacker Hall and Bryan Recital Hall which can accommodate up to 800 and 250 audience members, respectively. However, performances in Kobacker hall only fill one- fourth of the 800 seats, on average. Why is this so? This project aims to investigate the factors that influence students’ decisions to attend concerts at the College of Musical Arts (CMA). By methodology of survey research and statistical analysis, this project will look into …

Taking Notes: Generating Twelve-Tone Music With Mathematics, Nathan Molder May 2019

Taking Notes: Generating Twelve-Tone Music With Mathematics, Nathan Molder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has often been a connection between music and mathematics. The world of musical composition is full of combinations of orderings of different musical notes, each of which has different sound quality, length, and em phasis. One of the more intricate composition styles is twelve-tone music, where twelve unique notes (up to octave isomorphism) must be used before they can be repeated. In this thesis, we aim to show multiple ways in which mathematics can be used directly to compose twelve-tone musical scores.

Understanding The Impact Of Peer-Led Workshops On Student Learning, Afolabi Ibitoye, Nadia Kennedy, Armando Cosme

Publications and Research

As students we often wonder why some subjects are easy to understand and requires not much effort in terms of re-reading the material, for us to grasp what it entails. One subject seems to remain elusive and uneasy for a vast majority of learners at all levels of education; that subject is Mathematics, it is one subject that most learners finds difficult even after doubling the amount of time spent on studying the material. My intention is to explore ways to make Mathematics easier for other students using feedback from students enrolled in NSF mathematics peer leading workshops, and use …

Mathematical Models: The Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer Apr 2019

Mathematical Models: The Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This research study used mathematical models to analyze and depicted specific battle situations and the outcomes of the zombie apocalypse. The original models that predicted warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse models were fictional expansions upon mathematical models used to examine infectious diseases. In this paper, I analyzed and compared different mathematical models by examining each model’s set of assumptions and the impact of the change in variables on the population classes. The purpose of this study was to understand the basics of the discrete dynamical systems and to determine the similarities between imaginary and realistic models. …

Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Apr 2019

Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We study the state space realization of a tensor product of a pair of rational functions. At the expense of “inflating” the dimensions, we recover the classical expressions for realization of a regular product of rational functions. Under an additional assumption that the limit at infinity of a given rational function exists and is equal to identity, we introduce an explicit formula for a tensor factorization of this function.

A More Powerful Unconditional Exact Test Of Homogeneity For 2 × C Contingency Table Analysis, Louis Ehwerhemuepha, Heng Sok, Cyril Rakovski Apr 2019

A More Powerful Unconditional Exact Test Of Homogeneity For 2 × C Contingency Table Analysis, Louis Ehwerhemuepha, Heng Sok, Cyril Rakovski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The classical unconditional exact p-value test can be used to compare two multinomial distributions with small samples. This general hypothesis requires parameter estimation under the null which makes the test severely conservative. Similar property has been observed for Fisher's exact test with Barnard and Boschloo providing distinct adjustments that produce more powerful testing approaches. In this study, we develop a novel adjustment for the conservativeness of the unconditional multinomial exact p-value test that produces nominal type I error rate and increased power in comparison to all alternative approaches. We used a large simulation study to empirically estimate the …

Mathematical Analysis Of The Duck Migration To Louisiana, Brandon Garcia Apr 2019

Mathematical Analysis Of The Duck Migration To Louisiana, Brandon Garcia

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The purpose of this project is to research the relationship between duck migration and weather patterns, more specifically trying to determine if the rainfall and temperature in a given year affects the migration patterns of ducks. Duck hunters and conservation- ists alike have observed an overall decrease in the duck population in Louisiana over the past 70 years. Though some years have seen an increase, the population has not recovered to the level from the 1950s. These observations have led to many questions about what have happened to the ducks or where have the ducks gone. Using differ- ent forms …

Semiclassically Modeling Hydrogen At Rydberg States Immersed In Electromagnetic Fields, Jaron Williams Apr 2019

Semiclassically Modeling Hydrogen At Rydberg States Immersed In Electromagnetic Fields, Jaron Williams

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Originally, closed-orbit theory was developed in order to analyze oscillations in the near ionization threshold (Rydberg) densities of states for atoms in strong external electric and magnetic fields. Oscillations in the density of states were ascribed to classical orbits that began and ended near the atom. In essence, observed outgoing waves following the classical path return and interfere with original outgoing waves, giving rise to oscillations. Elastic scattering from one closed orbit to another gives additional oscillations in the cross-section. This study examines how quantum theory can be properly used in combination with classical orbit theory in order to study …

The Riemann Curvature Tensor, Jennifer Cox Apr 2019

The Riemann Curvature Tensor, Jennifer Cox

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

A tensor is a mathematical object that has applications in areas including physics, psychology, and artificial intelligence. The Riemann curvature tensor is a tool used to describe the curvature of n-dimensional spaces such as Riemannian manifolds in the field of differential geometry. The Riemann tensor plays an important role in the theories of general relativity and gravity as well as the curvature of spacetime. This paper will provide an overview of tensors and tensor operations. In particular, properties of the Riemann tensor will be examined. Calculations of the Riemann tensor for several two and three dimensional surfaces such as that …

Personality & How Sound Affects Moods, Joe Pham Apr 2019

Personality & How Sound Affects Moods, Joe Pham

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

This research seeks to determine the personality and relationship between current moods of individuals at Louisiana Tech University by conducting a sound test of a can opening with a pre and post mood assessment, Brief Mood Introspection Scale (BMIS). The real question is “Can a sound test change mood?” Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the study is intended to examine the relationship between the pre and post (BMIS). The results indicate that there is a statistically significant relationship between both BMIS assessments. To determine if the data is significant, we must show the analysis of both BMIS and its …

Pisano Periods: A Comparison Study, Katherine Willrich Apr 2019

Pisano Periods: A Comparison Study, Katherine Willrich

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The Pisano period, denoted π(n), is the period during which the Fibonacci sequence repeats after reducing the original sequence modulo n. More generally, one can similarly define Pisano periods for any linear recurrence sequence; in this paper we compare the Pisano periods of certain linear recurrence sequences with the Pisano periods of the Fibonacci sequence. We first construct recurrence sequences, defining the initial values as integers from 2 to 1000 and second values as 1. This paper discusses how the constructed sequences are related to the matrix M = [(first row) 1 1 (second row) 1 0] reduced modulo n. …

Folding Mathematics: A Mathematical Approach To Origami, Zachary Davis Apr 2019

Folding Mathematics: A Mathematical Approach To Origami, Zachary Davis

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

From constructing a midpoint on a line to observing specific divisions of a plane, the art form of Origami borrows many mathematical tools in order to create complex, and often symmetrical, patterns in a paper medium known as a fold. For this project, the traditional fold known as the Origami Crane/Swan will be thoroughly examined as it contains the unique property to lie completely flat when complete. This phenomenon occurs because the vertices holding the fold together are not all considered to be flat folds. The different types of vertices interacting with each other create a natural locking mechanism within …

Does Teaching The History Of Mathematics In High School Aid In Student Understanding?, Anne Campbell Apr 2019

Does Teaching The History Of Mathematics In High School Aid In Student Understanding?, Anne Campbell

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

This research will study the effect teaching the history of mathematics in a high school classroom has on student understanding. To accomplish this, lessons both including and excluding historical background on different topics were taught in an Honors Algebra 2 class in the high school setting. This research aims to engage student learning and investigation of topics that normally do not draw a lot of student focus and spark a new or revived interest in mathematics for students by broadening lessons to include material of which students would not otherwise be exposed. The lessons themselves aim to engage other current …

Reflection Positivity: A Quantum Field Theory Connection, Joseph W. Grenier Mar 2019

Reflection Positivity: A Quantum Field Theory Connection, Joseph W. Grenier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

At the heart of constructive quantum field theory lies reflection positivity. Through its use one may extend results for a Euclidean field theory to a relativistic theory. In this dissertation we connect functorial and constructive quantum field theories through reflection positivity. In 2014 Santosh Kandel constructed examples of $d$-dimensional functorial QFTs when $d$ is even. We define functorial reflection positivity and show that this functorial theory is a reflection positive theory. We go on to show that every reflection positive theory produces a reflection positive Hilbert space. Iterated doubles are then introduced and used as a starting point to produce …

Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem Using Ordered-Lists, Petar D. Jackovich Mar 2019

Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem Using Ordered-Lists, Petar D. Jackovich

Theses and Dissertations

The arc-greedy heuristic is a constructive heuristic utilized to build an initial, quality tour for the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). There are two known sub-tour elimination methodologies utilized to ensure the resulting tours are viable. This thesis introduces a third novel methodology, the Greedy Tracker (GT), and compares it to both known methodologies. Computational results are generated across multiple TSP instances. The results demonstrate the GT is the fastest method for instances below 400 nodes while Bentley's Multi-Fragment maintains a computational advantage for larger instances. A novel concept called Ordered-Lists is also introduced which enables TSP instances to be explored …

Monoidal Supercategories And Superadjunction, Dene Lepine Mar 2019

Monoidal Supercategories And Superadjunction, Dene Lepine

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We define the notion of superadjunction in the context of supercategories. In particular, we give definitions in terms of counit-unit superadjunctions and hom-space superadjunctions, and prove that these two definitions are equivalent. These results generalize well-known statements in the non-super setting. In the super setting, they formalize some notions that have recently appeared in the literature. We conclude with a brief discussion of superadjunction in the language of string diagrams.

Heterogeneous Boolean Networks With Two Totalistic Rules, Katherine Toh Mar 2019

Heterogeneous Boolean Networks With Two Totalistic Rules, Katherine Toh

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Boolean Networks are being used to analyze models in biology, economics, social sciences, and many other areas. These models simplify the reality by assuming that each element in the network can take on only two possible values, such as ON and OFF. The node evolution is governed by its interaction with other nodes in its neighborhood, which is described mathematically by a Boolean function or rule. For simplicity reasons, many models assume that all nodes follow the same Boolean rule. However, real networks often use more than one Boolean rule and therefore are heterogeneous networks. Heterogeneous networks have not yet …

Fourier Series Expansion Methods For The Heat And Wave Equations In Two And Three Dimensions On Spherical Domains, Matthew Eller Mar 2019

Fourier Series Expansion Methods For The Heat And Wave Equations In Two And Three Dimensions On Spherical Domains, Matthew Eller

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Description: The Fourier series expansion method is an invaluable approach to solving partial differential equations, including the heat and wave equations. For homogeneous heat and wave equations, the solution can readily be found through separation of variables and then expansion of the solution in terms of the eigenfunctions. Solutions to inhomogeneous heat and wave equations through Fourier series expansion methods were not readily available in the literature for two- and three-dimensional cases. In my previous paper, I developed an approach for solving inhomogeneous heat and wave equations on cubic domains using Fourier series expansion methods. I shall extend my …

Forensics Analysis For Bone Pair Matching Using Bipartite Graphs In Commingled Remains, Ryan Ernst Mar 2019

Forensics Analysis For Bone Pair Matching Using Bipartite Graphs In Commingled Remains, Ryan Ernst

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Identification of missing prisoners of war is a complex and time consuming task. There are many missing soldiers whose remains have yet to be returned to their families and loved ones. This nation has a solemn obligation to its soldiers and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. There are currently over 82,000 unidentified prisoners of war which are identified at a rate of 100+ per year. At this rate it would take 300+ years to complete the identification process. Previously, anthropologists used excel spreadsheets to sort through skeletal data. This project aims to streamline the …
