Learning From Machines: How Negative Feedback From Machines Improves Learning Between Humans, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Thomas Roulet Feb 2024

Learning From Machines: How Negative Feedback From Machines Improves Learning Between Humans, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Thomas Roulet

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Prior studies on learning from failure primarily focus on how individuals learn from failure feedback given by other individuals. It is unclear whether and how the advent of machine feedback may influence individuals’ learning from failures. We suggest that failure feedback provided by machines facilitates learning in two ways. First, it focuses individuals’ attention on their failures, leading them to learn from these failures. Second, it serves as a catalyzer, motivating individuals to learn more from failure feedback given to them by other individuals as well. In addition, this catalyzing effect is stronger if the failure feedback from machines and …

In an era of globalization, automotive companies are increasingly looking to make overseas investments to expand their production capacity and explore foreign markets. However, the outcomes of such investments are often influenced by a myriad of factors, including policy changes, social dynamics, and market conditions. To address the need for a comprehensive overseas investment information-sharing model, this research proposes an innovative approach based on a multi-modal weight network. This model aims to provide users with a global perspective on overseas investment opportunities, encompassing policy insights, and market dynamics. It integrates data from various sources, offering multi-dimensional information on investment regions, …

Better Pay Attention Whilst Fuzzing, Shunkai Zhu, Jingyi Wang, Jun Sun, Jie Yang, Xingwei Lin, Tianyi Wang, Liyi Zhang, Peng Cheng Feb 2024

Better Pay Attention Whilst Fuzzing, Shunkai Zhu, Jingyi Wang, Jun Sun, Jie Yang, Xingwei Lin, Tianyi Wang, Liyi Zhang, Peng Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fuzzing is one of the prevailing methods for vulnerability detection. However, even state-of-the-art fuzzing methods become ineffective after some period of time, i.e., the coverage hardly improves as existing methods are ineffective to focus the attention of fuzzing on covering the hard-to-trigger program paths. In other words, they cannot generate inputs that can break the bottleneck due to the fundamental difficulty in capturing the complex relations between the test inputs and program coverage. In particular, existing fuzzers suffer from the following main limitations: 1) lacking an overall analysis of the program to identify the most “rewarding” seeds, and 2) lacking …

Catnet: Cross-Modal Fusion For Audio-Visual Speech Recognition, Xingmei Wang, Jianchen Mi, Boquan Li, Yixu Zhao, Jiaxiang Meng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is a typical pattern recognition technology that converts human speeches into texts. With the aid of advanced deep learning models, the performance of speech recognition is significantly improved. Especially, the emerging Audio–Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR) methods achieve satisfactory performance by combining audio-modal and visual-modal information. However, various complex environments, especially noises, limit the effectiveness of existing methods. In response to the noisy problem, in this paper, we propose a novel cross-modal audio–visual speech recognition model, named CATNet. First, we devise a cross-modal bidirectional fusion model to analyze the close relationship between audio and visual modalities. Second, …

Hgprompt: Bridging Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Graphs For Few-Shot Prompt Learning, Xingtong Yu, Yuan Fang, Zemin Liu, Xinming Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph neural networks (GNNs) and heterogeneous graph neural networks (HGNNs) are prominent techniques for homogeneous and heterogeneous graph representation learning, yet their performance in an end-to-end supervised framework greatly depends on the availability of task-specific supervision. To reduce the labeling cost, pre-training on selfsupervised pretext tasks has become a popular paradigm, but there is often a gap between the pre-trained model and downstream tasks, stemming from the divergence in their objectives. To bridge the gap, prompt learning has risen as a promising direction especially in few-shot settings, without the need to fully fine-tune the pre-trained model. While there has been …

Glop: Learning Global Partition And Local Construction For Solving Large-Scale Routing Problems In Real-Time, Haoran Ye, Jiarui Wang, Helan Liang, Zhiguang Cao, Yong Li, Fanzhang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent end-to-end neural solvers have shown promise for small-scale routing problems but suffered from limited real-time scaling-up performance. This paper proposes GLOP (Global and Local Optimization Policies), a unified hierarchical framework that efficiently scales toward large-scale routing problems. GLOP partitions large routing problems into Travelling Salesman Problems (TSPs) and TSPs into Shortest Hamiltonian Path Problems. For the first time, we hybridize non-autoregressive neural heuristics for coarse-grained problem partitions and autoregressive neural heuristics for fine-grained route constructions, leveraging the scalability of the former and the meticulousness of the latter. Experimental results show that GLOP achieves competitive and state-of-the-art real-time performance …

Simple Image-Level Classification Improves Open-Vocabulary Object Detection, Ruohuan Fang, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai Feb 2024

Simple Image-Level Classification Improves Open-Vocabulary Object Detection, Ruohuan Fang, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Open-Vocabulary Object Detection (OVOD) aims to detect novel objects beyond a given set of base categories on which the detection model is trained. Recent OVOD methods focus on adapting the image-level pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs), such as CLIP, to a region-level object detection task via, eg., region-level knowledge distillation, regional prompt learning, or region-text pre-training, to expand the detection vocabulary. These methods have demonstrated remarkable performance in recognizing regional visual concepts, but they are weak in exploiting the VLMs' powerful global scene understanding ability learned from the billion-scale image-level text descriptions. This limits their capability in detecting hard objects of …

Leveraging Llms And Generative Models For Interactive Known-Item Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo Feb 2024

Leveraging Llms And Generative Models For Interactive Known-Item Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While embedding techniques such as CLIP have considerably boosted search performance, user strategies in interactive video search still largely operate on a trial-and-error basis. Users are often required to manually adjust their queries and carefully inspect the search results, which greatly rely on the users’ capability and proficiency. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) and generative models offer promising avenues for enhancing interactivity in video retrieval and reducing the personal bias in query interpretation, particularly in the known-item search. Specifically, LLMs can expand and diversify the semantics of the queries while avoiding grammar mistakes or the language barrier. In …

Mutation Analysis For Evaluating Code Translation, Giovani Guizzo, Jie M. Zhang, Federica Sarro, Christoph Treude, Mark Harman Feb 2024

Mutation Analysis For Evaluating Code Translation, Giovani Guizzo, Jie M. Zhang, Federica Sarro, Christoph Treude, Mark Harman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Source-to-source code translation automatically translates a program from one programming language to another. The existing research on code translation evaluates the effectiveness of their approaches by using either syntactic similarities (e.g., BLEU score), or test execution results. The former does not consider semantics, the latter considers semantics but falls short on the problem of insufficient data and tests. In this paper, we propose MBTA (Mutation-based Code Translation Analysis), a novel application of mutation analysis for code translation assessment. We also introduce MTS (Mutation-based Translation Score), a measure to compute the level of trustworthiness of a translator. If a mutant of …

Recommendations With Minimum Exposure Guarantees: A Post-Processing Framework, Ramon Lopes, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Rodrygo L. T. Santos, Marius Kloft Feb 2024

Recommendations With Minimum Exposure Guarantees: A Post-Processing Framework, Ramon Lopes, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Rodrygo L. T. Santos, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Relevance-based ranking is a popular ingredient in recommenders, but it frequently struggles to meet fairness criteria because social and cultural norms may favor some item groups over others. For instance, some items might receive lower ratings due to some sort of bias (e.g. gender bias). A fair ranking should balance the exposure of items from advantaged and disadvantaged groups. To this end, we propose a novel post-processing framework to produce fair, exposure-aware recommendations. Our approach is based on an integer linear programming model maximizing the expected utility while satisfying a minimum exposure constraint. The model has fewer variables than previous …

Foodmask: Real-Time Food Instance Counting, Segmentation And Recognition, Huu-Thanh Nguyen, Yu Cao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wing-Kwong Chan Feb 2024

Foodmask: Real-Time Food Instance Counting, Segmentation And Recognition, Huu-Thanh Nguyen, Yu Cao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wing-Kwong Chan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Food computing has long been studied and deployed to several applications. Understanding a food image at the instance level, including recognition, counting and segmentation, is essential to quantifying nutrition and calorie consumption. Nevertheless, existing techniques are limited to either category-specific instance detection, which does not reflect precisely the instance size at the pixel level, or category-agnostic instance segmentation, which is insufficient for dish recognition. This paper presents a compact and fast multi-task network, namely FoodMask, for clustering-based food instance counting, segmentation and recognition. The network learns a semantic space simultaneously encoding food category distribution and instance height at pixel basis. …

Robust Permissioned Blockchain Consensus For Unstable Communication In Fanet, Zihao Wang, Hang Wang, Zhuowen Li, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Yanbing Ren, Yunwei Wang, Zhe Ren, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The utilization of blockchain technology as a distributed information sharing system has gained widespread adoption across various domains. However, its application to Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET), characterized by severe packet loss, poses significant challenges. The high packet loss rates in FANETs can result in decreased consensus success rates and negatively impact information sharing consistency and efficiency. In this paper, we proposed RoUBC, a novel consensus scheme for Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANET), which is based on the Raft protocol and is designed to address the challenges posed by the severe packet loss network in FANET. The proposed scheme consists of two …

Harnessing Holistic Discourse Features And Triadic Interaction For Sentiment Quadruple Extraction In Dialogues, Bobo Li, Hao Fei, Lizi Liao, Et Al Feb 2024

Harnessing Holistic Discourse Features And Triadic Interaction For Sentiment Quadruple Extraction In Dialogues, Bobo Li, Hao Fei, Lizi Liao, Et Al

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dialogue Aspect-based Sentiment Quadruple (DiaASQ) is a newly-emergent task aiming to extract the sentiment quadruple (i.e., targets, aspects, opinions, and sentiments) from conversations. While showing promising performance, the prior DiaASQ approach unfortunately falls prey to the key crux of DiaASQ, including insufficient modeling of discourse features, and lacking quadruple extraction, which hinders furthertask improvement. To this end, we introduce a novel framework that not only capitalizes on comprehensive discourse feature modeling, but also captures the intrinsic interaction for optimal quadruple extraction. On the one hand, drawing upon multiple discourse features, our approach constructs a token-level heterogeneous graph and enhances token …

Earnhft: Efficient Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning For High Frequency Trading, Molei Qin, Shuo Sun, Wentao Zhang, Haochong Xia, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High-frequency trading (HFT) is using computer algorithms to make trading decisions in short time scales (e.g., second-level), which is widely used in the Cryptocurrency (Crypto) market, (e.g., Bitcoin). Reinforcement learning (RL) in financial research has shown stellar performance on many quantitative trading tasks. However, most methods focus on low-frequency trading, e.g., day-level, which cannot be directly applied to HFT because of two challenges. First, RL for HFT involves dealing with extremely long trajectories (e.g., 2.4 million steps per month), which is hard to optimize and evaluate. Second, the dramatic price fluctuations and market trend changes of Crypto make existing algorithms …

Unsupervised Training Sequence Design: Efficient And Generalizable Agent Training, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham Feb 2024

Unsupervised Training Sequence Design: Efficient And Generalizable Agent Training, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To train generalizable Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents, researchers recently proposed the Unsupervised Environment Design (UED) framework, in which a teacher agent creates a very large number of training environments and a student agent trains on the experiences in these environments to be robust against unseen testing scenarios. For example, to train a student to master the “stepping over stumps” task, the teacher will create numerous training environments with varying stump heights and shapes. In this paper, we argue that UED neglects training efficiency and its need for very large number of environments (henceforth referred to as infinite horizon training) makes …

Hackles: Simulating And Visually Representing The Anxiety Of Walking Alone, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Shannon Hoover, Lora Oehlberg Feb 2024

Hackles: Simulating And Visually Representing The Anxiety Of Walking Alone, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Shannon Hoover, Lora Oehlberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we compare the designs of two fashion-tech garments that communicate the anxiety felt when walking alone. While the two garments share a common vision, they are designed to be worn in two radically different settings and to communicate to different audiences: one directly communicates an empathetic experience to its wearer; the other a model wears at a runway show and must share its story to a general audience. We used Research Through Design (RtD) methods to design both fashion-tech garments. Then, we recorded and analyzed the design process for both garments via an annotated portfolio to compare …

Out-Of-Distribution Detection In Long-Tailed Recognition With Calibrated Outlier Class Learning, Wenjun Miao, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Tianqi Li, Jin Zheng Feb 2024

Out-Of-Distribution Detection In Long-Tailed Recognition With Calibrated Outlier Class Learning, Wenjun Miao, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Tianqi Li, Jin Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing out-of-distribution (OOD) methods have shown great success on balanced datasets but become ineffective in long-tailed recognition (LTR) scenarios where 1) OOD samples are often wrongly classified into head classes and/or 2) tail-class samples are treated as OOD samples. To address these issues, current studies fit a prior distribution of auxiliary/pseudo OOD data to the long-tailed in-distribution (ID) data. However, it is difficult to obtain such an accurate prior distribution given the unknowingness of real OOD samples and heavy class imbalance in LTR. A straightforward solution to avoid the requirement of this prior is to learn an outlier class to …

Vadclip: Adapting Vision-Language Models For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection, Peng Wu, Xuerong Zhou, Guansong Pang, Lingru Zhou, Qingsen Yan, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang Feb 2024

Vadclip: Adapting Vision-Language Models For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection, Peng Wu, Xuerong Zhou, Guansong Pang, Lingru Zhou, Qingsen Yan, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP) model has shown great success in a wide range of image-level tasks, revealing remarkable ability for learning powerful visual representations with rich semantics. An open and worthwhile problem is efficiently adapting such a strong model to the video domain and designing a robust video anomaly detector. In this work, we propose VadCLIP, a new paradigm for weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WSVAD) by leveraging the frozen CLIP model directly without any pre-training and fine-tuning process. Unlike current works that directly feed extracted features into the weakly supervised classifier for frame-level binary classification, VadCLIP makes …

Transition-Informed Reinforcement Learning For Large-Scale Stackelberg Mean-Field Games., Pengdeng Li, Runsheng Yu, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many real-world scenarios including fleet management and Ad auctions can be modeled as Stackelberg mean-field games (SMFGs) where a leader aims to incentivize a large number of homogeneous self-interested followers to maximize her utility. Existing works focus on cases with a small number of heterogeneous followers, e.g., 5-10, and suffer from scalability issue when the number of followers increases. There are three major challenges in solving large-scale SMFGs: i) classical methods based on solving differential equations fail as they require exact dynamics parameters, ii) learning by interacting with environment is data-inefficient, and iii) complex interaction between the leader and followers …

Market-Gan: Adding Control To Financial Market Data Generation With Semantic Context, Haochong Xia, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Financial simulators play an important role in enhancing forecasting accuracy, managing risks, and fostering strategic financial decision-making. Despite the development of financial market simulation methodologies, existing frameworks often struggle with adapting to specialized simulation context. We pinpoint the challenges as i) current financial datasets do not contain context labels; ii) current techniques are not designed to generate financial data with context as control, which demands greater precision compared to other modalities; iii) the inherent difficulties in generating context-aligned, high-fidelity data given the non-stationary, noisy nature of financial data. To address these challenges, our contributions are: i) we proposed the Contextual …

Pam3s: Progressive Two-Stage Auction-Based Multi-Platform Multi-User Mutual Selection Scheme In Mcs, Bin Luo, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Man Zhang, Ximeng Liu, Yanbing Ren, Xizhao Luo, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) has been applied in various fields to realize data sharing, where multiple platforms and multiple Mobile Users () have appeared recently. However, aiming at mutual selection, the existing works ignore making ' utilities with the limited resources and platforms' utilities while achieving the desired sensing data quality maximum as far as possible. Thus, they cannot motivate both and platforms to participate. To address this problem, standing on both sides of and platforms with conflicting interests, we propose a Progressive two-stage Auction-based Multi-platform Multi-user Mutual Selection scheme (). Specifically, in, we treat mutual selection as a two-stage auction …

A Computational Profile Of Invasive Lionfish In Belize: A New Insight On A Destructive Species, Joshua E. Balan

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Since their discovery in the region in 2009, invasive Indonesian-native lionfish have been taking over the Belize Barrier Reef. As a result, populations of local species have dwindled as they are either eaten or outcompeted by the invaders. This has led to devastating losses ecologically and economically; massive industries in the local nations, such as fisheries and tourism, have suffered greatly. Attempting to combat this, local organizations, from nonprofits to ecotourism companies, have been manually spear-hunting them on scuba dives to cull the population. One such company, Reef Conservation Institute (ReefCI), operating out of Tom Owens Caye outside of Placencia, …

The Aim To Decentralize Economic Systems With Blockchains And Crypto, Mary Lacity

Arkansas Law Review

As an information systems (“IS”) professor, I wrote this Article for legal professionals new to blockchains and crypto. This target audience likely is most interested in crypto for its legal implications—depending on whether it functions as currencies, securities, commodities, or properties; however, legal professionals also need to understand crypto’s origin, how transactions work, and how they are governed.
