Out Of Core And Adaptive Image Blending Approach For Large Scale Image Mosaics, Marcus Quincy
Out Of Core And Adaptive Image Blending Approach For Large Scale Image Mosaics, Marcus Quincy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
When creating large stitched images, like those used in maps made from aerial photos, it’s important to make sure the seams between individual pictures aren’t visible. This process, known as color blending, helps smooth out differences in lighting or weather across the images. But blending very large images, such as those made from many high-resolution aerial photos, can require huge amounts of memory, making it hard to do on a typical computer.
In this work, we developed a method that breaks the problem into smaller pieces, so only a small part of the image needs to be worked on at …
A Value Sensitive Design Approach To Reimagining Parental Control Apps, Prakriti Dumaru
A Value Sensitive Design Approach To Reimagining Parental Control Apps, Prakriti Dumaru
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Parental control apps are often used by families to regulate children's device usage and keep them safe online. However, existing tools focus on monitoring and restricting children, which can lead to tension and mistrust within families. This research takes a new approach by exploring how parental control apps can be redesigned to support positive family values, like encouraging open communication between parents and children and helping children self-regulate their behaviors. Through four in-depth studies, this dissertation looks at how these values play out in different real-life situations. It includes families with children on the autism spectrum, divorced households where parents …
Beyond The Click: Investigating Mental Models, Targeted Attacks, And Behavioral Interventions Against Clickbait, Ankit Shrestha
Beyond The Click: Investigating Mental Models, Targeted Attacks, And Behavioral Interventions Against Clickbait, Ankit Shrestha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Clickbait is misleading or exaggerated content on social media that tricks people into clicking on links by making them curious. For instance, posts that use headlines such as “This is the worst day to visit a restaurant”. These clickbait posts can lead to fake news, wrong information, and even harmful websites. Even though many people know clickbait can be risky, they often still fall for it. Existing tools to stop clickbait don’t always consider how people think, the situations they are in, or their different needs. This research looks at how people understand and react to clickbait, and develops different …
Advancing Real-World Implementation Of The Well Optimized Linear Finder (Wolf) High-Speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Method, Timothy Evan Coon
Advancing Real-World Implementation Of The Well Optimized Linear Finder (Wolf) High-Speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Method, Timothy Evan Coon
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation advances the real-world implementation of the Well Optimized Linear Finder (WOLF) method for high-speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation (ATC). Atmospheric turbulence introduces phase aberrations into optical wavefronts and degrades image quality in terrestrial imaging systems. Traditional phase diversity methods are computationally intensive and poorly suited to real-time operation. The WOLF method addresses these limitations through a novel, point-wise formulation of the optical transfer function (OTF) as a structured autocorrelation of the generalized pupil function (GPF). This formulation enables the estimation of phase aberrations at individual spatial coordinates with distributed computational complexity.
The research begins by developing a MATLAB-based simulation …

Characterization Of Search Spaces And Effects On Machine Learning, Leo Ghelarducci
Characterization Of Search Spaces And Effects On Machine Learning, Leo Ghelarducci
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The present status of the field of Machine Learning (ML) focuses on optimization of popular models. Rarely are the effects of the problem characteristics upon the solution algorithm studied. There exists no standard for knowing when to apply ML algorithms to a given problem or how to estimate the effectiveness of results. Focusing on the search space of problems, a rigorous study was conducted to generate an in-depth understanding of the impact of search space characteristics to the performance of a ML algorithm, specifically a Genetic Algorithm (GA). The effects of specific problem characteristics, represented via solution space characteristics, on …
Non-Blackbox Robust Design Of Machine Learning In Networks, Venkat Sai Suman Lamba Karanam
Non-Blackbox Robust Design Of Machine Learning In Networks, Venkat Sai Suman Lamba Karanam
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Networked systems have become increasingly complex, with newer communication technologies and standards being added every day. Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) paradigms have been adopted in networks to not only solve many fundamental problems, but also to allow seamless integration of components comprising them. The saying “let’s not reinvent the wheel” in ML/AI adoption implies that model architecture design be left for pure ML/AI researchers, while network researchers focus on input preprocessing (e.g. formatting the packet data to be fed to a model), hyperparameter fine-tuning and a trial-and-error approach to find the “best” result. …
Authentication And Message Integrity Verification For Emerging Wireless Networks, Ebuka Philip Oguchi
Authentication And Message Integrity Verification For Emerging Wireless Networks, Ebuka Philip Oguchi
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation presents a comprehensive body of research on authentication and message integrity verification for emerging wireless networks, focusing on secret-free and physical layer security techniques across diverse, challenging, and unconventional environments.
It comprises four first-author contributions that span underground wireless systems, over-the-air (OTA) channels, vehicular communications, and nanoscale molecular networks.
The first contribution, Soil-Assisted Trust Establishment for Underground Wireless Networks (STUN), introduces a physical-layer trust bootstrapping protocol that achieves authentication and message integrity without pre-shared secrets. Leveraging underground-to-air propagation laws and trusted relay nodes, STUN resists active signal injection attacks and demonstrates security comparable to the unbalanced oil and …
Faced With Genai, Educators’ Engagement Capacity Matters More Than Ever, Thomas Menkhoff
Faced With Genai, Educators’ Engagement Capacity Matters More Than Ever, Thomas Menkhoff
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In a commentary, SMU Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources (Education) Thomas Menkhoff stressed the need for educators to upskill so they can guide students in using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) responsibly, rather than dismissing it. He argued that universities should move beyond prohibition and invest in AI literacy to safeguard academic integrity. Prof Menkhoff mentioned that combining the use of GenAI tools with effective prompting and Socratic questioning transforms students’ use of technology from passive consumption to active, reflective and critical engagement. To achieve this, he said that schools must set clear guidelines and design AI-compatible assessments that …

Knowledge utilization is a critical aspect of LLMs, and understanding how they adapt to evolving knowledge is essential for their effective deployment. However, existing benchmarks are predominantly static, failing to capture the evolving nature of LLMs and knowledge, leading to inaccuracies and vulnerabilities such as contamination. In this paper, we introduce EvoWiki, an evolving dataset designed to reflect knowledge evolution by categorizing information into stable, evolved, and uncharted states. EvoWiki is fully auto-updated, enabling precise evaluation of continuously changing knowledge and newly released LLMs. Through experiments with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Continual Learning (CL), we evaluate how effectively LLMs adapt …

Improved Secure Two-Party Computation From A Geometric Perspective, Hao Guo, Liqiang Peng, Haiyang Xue, Li Peng, Weiran Liu, Zhe Liu, Lei. Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multiplication and other non-linear operations are widely recognized as the most costly components of secure two-party computation (2PC) based on linear secret sharing. Moreover, the comparison protocol (or Wrap protocol) is essential for various operations such as truncation, signed extension, and signed non-uniform multiplication. This paper aims to optimize these protocols by avoiding invoking the costly comparison protocol, thereby improving their efficiency. We propose a novel approach to study 2PC from a geometric perspective. Specifically, we interpret the two shares of a secret as the horizontal and vertical coordinates of a point in a Cartesian coordinate system, with the secret itself …

Learning Frame-Level Classifiers For Video-Based Real-Time Assessment Of Stroke Rehabilitation Exercises From Weakly Annotated Datasets, Ana Rita Cóias, Min Hun Lee, Alexandre Bernardino, Asim Smailagic, Mariana Mateus, David Fernandes, Sofia Trapola
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Autonomous rehabilitation support solutions, such as virtual coaches, should provide real-time feedback to improve motor function and maintain patient engagement. However, fully annotated dataset collection for real-time exercise assessment is time-consuming and costly, posing a barrier to evaluating proposed methods. In this work, we present a novel framework that learns a frame-level classifier using weakly annotated videos for real-time assessment of compensatory motions in stroke rehabilitation exercises by generating pseudo-labels at a frame level. We consider three approaches: 1) a baseline approach that uses a source dataset to train a frame-level classifier, 2) a transfer learning approach that uses target …
Explainable Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Of Social Media Visual Content For Child Safety, Yee Sen Tan, Zhaoxia Wang
Explainable Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Of Social Media Visual Content For Child Safety, Yee Sen Tan, Zhaoxia Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ensuring the safety and well-being of children is increasingly important, especially in a world where visual content is pervasive. This paper proposes a novel multimodal, multilingual, and multiclass sentiment analysis method for social media content, aimed at improving content moderation for child safety. Our approach integrates textual, visual, and audio data from videos, categorizing sentiment into four levels: positive, slightly negative, negative, and strongly negative, enabling granular detection of harmful content. To enhance explainability and trust, we also leverage interpretable mechanisms to analyze the contributions of each modality. Evaluation of our method demonstrates strong generalization across diverse video types, and …

Focus: Evaluating Pre-Trained Vision-Language Models On Underspecification Reasoning, Kankan Zhou, Yibin Lai, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Humans possess a remarkable ability to interpret underspecified ambiguous statements by inferring their meanings from contexts such as visual inputs. This ability, however, may not be as developed in recent pre-trained visionlanguage models (VLMs). In this paper, we introduce a novel probing dataset called FOCUS to evaluate whether state-of-the-art VLMs have this ability. FOCUS consists of underspecified sentences paired with image contexts and carefully designed probing questions. Our experiments reveal that VLMs still fall short in handling underspecification even when visual inputs that can help resolve the ambiguities are available. To further support research in underspecification, FOCUS will be released …
How To Do Things With Little Talking Tubes: Nonideal Speech Acts In The Digital Age, Anthony Holdier
How To Do Things With Little Talking Tubes: Nonideal Speech Acts In The Digital Age, Anthony Holdier
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this work, I develop a view about what it means to share a social or conversational context with others, as well as what is normatively entailed by doing so. Working from a broadly Austinian perspective about the moral foundations of language use and how we use words to position ourselves within social space, as well as from a generally Stalnakerian social ontology (demarcating groups by dint of aligned or overlapping sets of commitments), I present three papers demonstrating how nonidealized, ordinary language philosophy can make sense of complex, real-world phenomena. Through analyses of heretical utterances, context collapse, and chatbot …

Simulating human clients in mental health counseling is crucial for training and evaluating counselors (both human or simulated) in a scalable manner. Nevertheless, past research on client simulation did not focus on complex conversation tasks such as mental health counseling. In these tasks, the challenge is to ensure that the client’s actions (i.e., interactions with the counselor) are consistent with with its stipulated profiles and negative behavior settings. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that supports consistent client simulation for mental health counseling. Our framework tracks the mental state of a simulated client, controls its state transitions, and …

Equivalence And Similarity Refutation For Probabilistic Programs, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Ehsan Kafshdar Goharshady, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We consider the problems of statically refuting equivalence and similarity of output distributions defined by a pair of probabilistic programs. Equivalence and similarity are two fundamental relational properties of probabilistic programs that are essential for their correctness both in implementation and in compilation. In this work, we present a new method for static equivalence and similarity refutation. Our method refutes equivalence and similarity by computing a function over program outputs whose expected value with respect to the output distributions of two programs is different. The function is computed simultaneously with an upper expectation supermartingale and a lower expectation submartingale for …

Regularly testing deep learning-powered systems on newly collected data is critical to ensure their reliability, robustness, and efficacy in real-world applications. This process is demanding due to the significant time and human effort required for labeling new data. While test selection methods alleviate manual labor by labeling and evaluating only a subset of data while meeting testing criteria, we observe that such methods with reported promising results are simply evaluated, e.g., testing on original test data. The question arises: are they always reliable? In this article, we explore when and to what extent test selection methods fail. First, we identify …

Generating high-quality Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) remains challenging for educational tools due to the need for contextual relevance and plausible distractors. Existing methods still struggle with these dual requirements, leading to questions that lack depth and distractors that are either too obvious or irrelevant. In this paper, we propose BiFlow, a novel framework that integrates bidirectional reasoning perspectives: teacher reasoning generates contextually relevant questions and plausible distractors, while student reasoning evaluates question clarity and the misleading nature of the distractors. To further enhance reasoning, we introduce PathFinder, a mechanism that employs breadth-first search and Chainof-Thought (CoT) strategies to explore diverse …

Non-Homophilic Graph Pre-Training And Prompt Learning, Xingtong Yu, Jie Zhang, Yuan Fang, Renhe Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graphs are ubiquitous for modeling complex relationships between objects across various fields. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have become a mainstream technique for graph-based applications, but their performance heavily relies on abundant labeled data. To reduce labeling requirement, pre-training and prompt learning has become a popular alternative. However, most existing prompt methods do not distinguish between homophilic and heterophilic characteristics in graphs. In particular, many real-world graphs are non-homophilic-neither strictly nor uniformly homophilic-as they exhibit varying homophilic and heterophilic patterns across graphs and nodes. In this paper, we propose ProNoG, a novel pre-training and prompt learning framework for such non-homophilic graphs. …

This article investigates the problem of continual learning (CL) of vision-language models (VLMs) in open domains, where models are required to perform continual updating and inference on a stream of datasets from diverse seen and unseen domains with novel classes. Such a capability is crucial for various applications in open environments, e.g., AI assistants, autonomous driving systems, and robotics. Current CL studies mostly focus on closed-set scenarios in a single domain with known classes. Large pretrained VLMs such as CLIP have showcased exceptional zero-shot recognition capabilities, and several recent studies have leveraged the unique characteristics of VLMs to mitigate catastrophic …

Other Orienteering Problem Variants, Pieter Vansteenwegen, Aldy Gunawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this chapter, different variants of routing problems with profits will be discussed. Based on what is available in literature, mostly variants of the orienteering problem will be discussed. A first variant considers capacity constraints, since these appear frequently in many practical applications. Next, multi-objective orienteering problems, explicitly considering different types of profits separately are discussed. Time-dependent and stochastic travel times are also relevant for most practical applications. These are considered together with time-dependent and stochastic profits. More and more routing problems are considered together with inventory management. For routing problems with profits, this leads to the inventory orienteering problem, …

Optimizing Group Utility In Itinerary Planning: A Strategic And Crowd-Aware Approach, Junhua Liu, Aldy Gunawan, Kristin L. Wood, Kwan Hui Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Itinerary recommendation is a complex sequence prediction problem with numerous practical applications. The task becomes significantly more challenging when optimizing multiple factors simultaneously, such as user queuing times, crowd levels, attraction popularity, walking durations, and operating hours. These factors, combined with the dynamic and unpredictable nature of visitor flow, introduce substantial complexities, particularly when accounting for collective user behavior. Existing solutions often adopt a single-user perspective, overlooking critical challenges arising from natural crowd dynamics. For example, the Selfish Routing problem illustrates how individual decision-making can lead to suboptimal outcomes for the group as a whole. To address these challenges, we …

Integrated circuits are the core of a cyber-physical system, where tens of billions of components are integrated into a tiny silicon chip to conduct complex functions. To maximize utilities, the design and manufacturing life cycle of integrated circuits rely on numerous untrustworthy third parties, forming a global supply chain model. At the same time, this model produces unpredictable and catastrophic issues, threatening the security of individuals and countries. As for guaranteeing the security of ultra-highly integrated chips, detecting slight abnormalities caused by malicious behavior in the current and voltage is challenging, as is achieving computability within a reasonable time and …

Background: Early-stage diagnosis of laryngeal cancer significantly improves patient survival and quality of life. However, the scarcity of specialists in low-resource settings hinders the timely review of flexible nasopharyngoscopy (FNS) videos, which are essential for accurate triage of at-risk patients. Objective: We introduce a preliminary AI-based screening framework to address this challenge for the triaging of at-risk patients in low-resource settings. This formative research addresses multiple challenges common in high-dimensional FNS videos: (1) selecting clear, informative images; (2) deriving regions within frames that show an anatomical landmark of interest; and (3) classifying patients into referral grades based on the FNS video …

Event-based eye tracking holds significant promise for fine-grained cognitive state inference, offering high temporal resolution and robustness to motion artifacts, critical features for decoding subtle mental states such as attention, confusion, or fatigue. In this work, we introduce a model-agnostic, inference-time refinement framework designed to enhance the output of existing event-based gaze estimation models without modifying their architecture or requiring retraining. Our method comprises two key post-processing modules: (i) Motion-Aware Median Filtering, which suppresses blink-induced spikes while preserving natural gaze dynamics, and (ii) Optical Flow-Based Local Refinement, which aligns gaze predictions with cumulative event motion to reduce spatial jitter and …

Llm2rec: Large Language Models Are Powerful Embedding Models For Sequential Recommendation, Yingzhi He, Xiaohao Liu, An Zhang, Yunshan Ma, Tat‑Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sequential recommendation aims to predict users' future interactions by modeling collaborative filtering (CF) signals from historical behaviors of similar users or items. Traditional sequential recommenders predominantly rely on ID-based embeddings, which capture CF signals through high-order co-occurrence patterns. However, these embeddings depend solely on past interactions, lacking transferable knowledge to generalize to unseen domains. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have motivated text-based recommendation approaches that derive item representations from textual descriptions. While these methods enhance generalization, they fail to encode CF signals-i.e., latent item correlations and preference patterns-crucial for effective recommendation. We argue that an ideal embedding model …

We present Prism, an UI hardening technique for an Android app to safeguard its widgets against a corrupted kernel. Prism ensures secure interface rendering and allows for visual authentication, which developers could use to enable user intent confidentiality protection. Our design leverages the recent Android Virtualization Framework with minimal changes to the existing UI framework and graphics subsystem. It is much easier to deploy and use Prism on Android phones than TrustZone-based secure UI schemes, because the apps are not admitted to the Secure World and retain their full rights to manage and control their own interfaces. We have implemented …
