Exploring Artificial Intelligence-Mediated Communication (Aimc) As A Sub-Field Of Communication Studies. A Textual Examination, Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan Jan 2020

Exploring Artificial Intelligence-Mediated Communication (Aimc) As A Sub-Field Of Communication Studies. A Textual Examination, Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

From the book "Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication," written by John Durham Peters, we understand a notion about developing one’s destiny; people have the freedom to choose multiple paths to follow (Peters, 2012). If we reject this idea, it is also easy for people to come up with distinct explanations. Even though the meaning of the same issues might vary subject to who is interpreting them, the primary concepts can be interpreted as more or less the same. If we study these two--"artificial intelligence" and "communication"- simultaneously, we can assume some characteristics. Thus, this …

Separating Content Selection From Surface Realization In Neural Text Summarization, Logan Lebanoff Jan 2020

Separating Content Selection From Surface Realization In Neural Text Summarization, Logan Lebanoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Text summarization is a rapidly growing field with many new innovations. End-to-end models using the sequence-to-sequence architecture achieve high scores according to automatic metrics on standard datasets. However, they frequently generate summaries that are factually inconsistent with the original article -- a vital problem to be solved before the summaries can be used in real-world applications. In addition, they are not generalizable to new domains, especially those with few training examples. In this dissertation, we propose to explicitly separate the two steps of content selection and surface realization in summarization. Content selection is the process of choosing important words/phrases/sentences from …

One of these challenging tasks is the accurate localization of the eloquent language cortex in brain resection pre-surgery patients. This is especially important since inaccurate localization can lead to diminshed functionalities and thus, a poor quality of life for the patient. The first part of this dissertation addresses this problem in the case of drug-resistant epileptic patients. We propose a novel machine learning based algorithm to establish an alternate electrical …

The Concept Of Representation Capability Of Databases And Its Application In Is Development, Lishuan Qin, Junkang Feng Jan 2020

The Concept Of Representation Capability Of Databases And Its Application In Is Development, Lishuan Qin, Junkang Feng

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The representation capability of an information system in general and a database in particular seems an important and yet elusive concept, which is concerned with, in our view, how a database ever becomes capable of representing real-world objects accurately or otherwise. To explore how to approach and then define this concept, we explore what is meant and required by the statement that a database connection (i.e., a connection between database constructs such as entities in an Entity-relationship (ER) diagram and relations in a relational schema that are made available by a database) refers to, represents and accurately represents a …

A Deep Learning Approach To Mapping Irrigation: U-Net Irrmapper, Thomas Henry Colligan Iv Jan 2020

A Deep Learning Approach To Mapping Irrigation: U-Net Irrmapper, Thomas Henry Colligan Iv

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Accurate maps of irrigation are essential for understanding and managing water resources in light of a warming climate. We present a new method for mapping irrigation and apply it to the state of Montana over the years 2000-2019. The method is based on an ensemble of convolutional neural networks that only rely on raw Landsat surface reflectance data. The ensemble of networks method learns to mask clouds and ignore Landsat 7 scan-line failures without supervision, reducing the need for preprocessing data or feature engineering. Unlike other approaches to mapping irrigation, the method doesn't use other mapping products like the Cropland …

A User-Centric And Sentiment Aware Privacy-Disclosure Detection Framework Based On Multi-Input Neural Network, A. K. M. Nuhil Mehdy, Hoda Mehrpouyan

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Data and information privacy is a major concern of today’s world. More specifically, users’ digital privacy has become one of the most important issues to deal with, as advancements are being made in information sharing technology. An increasing number of users are sharing information through text messages, emails, and social media without proper awareness of privacy threats and their consequences. One approach to prevent the disclosure of private information is to identify them in a conversation and warn the dispatcher before the conveyance happens between the sender and the receiver. Another way of preventing information (sensitive) loss might be to …

This paper addresses the problem of automatically detecting fake news spreaders in social networks such as Twitter. We model the problem as a binary classification task and consider several groups of features, including writing style, word and char n-grams, BERT semantic embedding, and sentiment analysis, which are computed from a set of tweets each user authored. Our proposed approach is evaluated on the dataset made available by the PAN at CLEF 2020 shared task on profiling fake news spreader, which provided labeled data in both English and Spanish. Experimental results show that we can detect fake news spreaders with an …

Measuring Differential Forest Growth In The Sheepscot River Headwaters With Bitemporal Lidar, Soren Denlinger Jan 2020

Measuring Differential Forest Growth In The Sheepscot River Headwaters With Bitemporal Lidar, Soren Denlinger

Honors Theses

In recent years, lidar has proven itself as a forestry tool capable of accurate, large- scale inventories. Lidar has even shown utility in multitemporal analysis and growth assessment, given high-resolution or small-scale point clouds. However, lidar’s efficacy as a multitemporal tool with relatively low-resolution, large-scale datasets is comparatively unknown. In this study, I compared forest in Midcoast Maine bitemporally, with publicly available datasets from the years 2007 and 2012. Specifically, I compared differences in growth characteristics of riparian, wetland, and upland forests. Although the 2007 dataset (created for geomorphological research) and the 2012 dataset (statewide, general-purpose) possess varying point densities …

Completion Reasoning Emulation For The Description Logic El+, Aaron Eberhart, Monireh Ebrahimi, Lu Zhou, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a new approach to integrating deep learning with knowledge-based systems that we believe shows promise. Our approach seeks to emulate reasoning structure, which can be inspected part-way through, rather than simply learning reasoner answers, which is typical in many of the black-box systems currently in use. We demonstrate that this idea is feasible by training a long short-term memory (LSTM) artificial neural network to learn εℒ+ reasoning patterns with two different data sets. We also show that this trained system is resistant to noise by corrupting a percentage of the test data and comparing the reasoner’s and LSTM’s …

Detection Of Hand Osteoarthritis From Hand Radiographs Using Convolutionalneural Networks With Transfer Learning, Kemal Üreten, Hasan Erbay, Hadi̇ Hakan Maraş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Hand osteoarthritis leads to specific structural changes in the joints, such as asymmetric joint space narrowing and osteophytes (bone spurs). Conventional radiography has traditionally been the primary method of visualizing these structural changes and diagnosing osteoarthritis. We aimed to develop a computerized method that is capable of determining the structural changes seen in radiography of the hand and to assist practitioners in interpreting radiographic changes and diagnosing the disease. In this retrospective study, transfer-learning-based convolutional neural networks were trained on a randomly selected dataset containing 332 radiography images of hands from an …

Among the access control methods for database security, there is Mandatory Access Control (MAC) model in which the security level is set to both the subject and the object to enhance the security control. Legacy MAC models have focused only on one thing, either confidentiality or integrity. Thus, it can cause collisions between security policies in supporting confidentiality and integrity simultaneously. In addition, they do not provide a granular security class policy of subjects and objects in terms of subjects' roles or tasks. In this paper, we present the security policy of Bell_LaPadula Model (BLP) model and Biba model as …

You Don’T Say... Linguistic Features In Sarcasm Detection, Martina Ducret, Lauren Kruse, Carlos Martinez, Anna Feldman, Jing Peng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We explore linguistic features that contribute to sarcasm detection. The linguistic features that we investigate are a combination of text and word complexity, stylistic and psychological features. We experiment with sarcastic tweets with and without context. The results of our experiments indicate that contextual information is crucial for sarcasm prediction. One important observation is that sarcastic tweets are typically incongruent with their context in terms of sentiment or emotional load.

This paper presents the Neural Network Verification (NNV) software tool, a set-based verification framework for deep neural networks (DNNs) and learning-enabled cyber-physical systems (CPS). The crux of NNV is a collection of reachability algorithms that make use of a variety of set representations, such as polyhedra, star sets, zonotopes, and abstract-domain representations. NNV supports both exact (sound and complete) and over-approximate (sound) reachability algorithms for verifying safety and robustness properties of feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs) with various activation functions. For learning-enabled CPS, such as closed-loop control systems incorporating neural networks, NNV provides exact and over-approximate reachability analysis schemes for linear …
