As Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly present across industries, concerns have started to emerge as to their impact on professional liability. Specifically, for the medical industry--in many ways an inherently "risky" business--hospitals and physicians have begun evaluating the impact of Al tools on their professional malpractice risk. This Essay seeks to address that question, zooming in on how AI may affect physicians' standard of care for medical malpractice claims.

Artificial Stupidity, Clark D. Asay Apr 2020

Artificial Stupidity, Clark D. Asay

William & Mary Law Review

Artificial intelligence is everywhere. And yet, the experts tell us, it is not yet actually anywhere. This is because we are yet to achieve artificial general intelligence, or artificially intelligent systems that are capable of thinking for themselves and adapting to their circumstances. Instead, all the AI hype—and it is constant—concerns narrower, weaker forms of artificial intelligence, which are confined to performing specific, narrow tasks. The promise of true artificial general intelligence thus remains elusive. Artificial stupidity reigns supreme.

What is the best set of policies to achieve more general, stronger forms of artificial intelligence? Surprisingly, scholars have paid little …

Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge Apr 2020

Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge

Master's Theses

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a widely accepted means of solving complex classification and detection problems in imaging and speech. However, problem complexity often leads to considerable increases in computation and parameter storage costs. Many successful attempts have been made in effectively reducing these overheads by pruning and compressing large CNNs with only a slight decline in model accuracy. In this study, two pruning methods are implemented and compared on the CIFAR-10 database and an ECG arrhythmia classification task. Each pruning method employs a pruning phase interleaved with a finetuning phase. It is shown that when performing the scale-factor pruning …

Geopolitics And The Digital Domain: How Cyberspace Is Impacting International Security, Georgia Wood Apr 2020

Geopolitics And The Digital Domain: How Cyberspace Is Impacting International Security, Georgia Wood

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The digital domain is the emerging environment for which the internet and data connectivity exists. This new domain is challenging the traditional place for geopolitics to exist, and creating new challenges to international relations. The use of cyberweapons through direct cyberattacks, such as the possibility of an attack on the U.S. power grid, or misinformation campaigns, such as the one launched by Russia against the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, can expand the international threat landscape. While these new threats increase, states are widely not prepared to address the new challenges in the digital domain. This paper will use three primary …

An Overlay Architecture For Pattern Matching, Rasha Elham Karakchi Apr 2020

An Overlay Architecture For Pattern Matching, Rasha Elham Karakchi

Theses and Dissertations

Deterministic and Non-deterministic Finite Automata (DFA and NFA) comprise the fundamental unit of work for many emerging big data applications, motivating recent efforts to develop Domain-Specific Architectures (DSAs) to exploit fine-grain parallelism available in automata workloads.

This dissertation presents NAPOLY (Non-Deterministic Automata Processor Over- LaY), an overlay architecture and associated software that attempt to maximally exploit on-chip memory parallelism for NFA evaluation. In order to avoid an upper bound in NFA size that commonly affects prior efforts, NAPOLY is optimized for runtime reconfiguration, allowing for full reconfiguration in 10s of microseconds. NAPOLY is also parameterizable, allowing for offline generation of …

Crowdsourcing Detection Of Sampling Biases In Image Datasets, Xiao Hu, Haobo Wang, Anirudh Vegesana, Somesh Dube, Kaiwen Yu, Gore Kao, Shuo-Han Chen, Yung-Hsiang Lu, George K. Thiruvathukal, Ming Yin

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite many exciting innovations in computer vision, recent studies reveal a number of risks in existing computer vision systems, suggesting results of such systems may be unfair and untrustworthy. Many of these risks can be partly attributed to the use of a training image dataset that exhibits sampling biases and thus does not accurately reflect the real visual world. Being able to detect potential sampling biases in the visual dataset prior to model development is thus essential for mitigating the fairness and trustworthy concerns in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a three-step crowdsourcing workflow to get humans into …

A Machine Learning Based Approach To Accelerate Catalyst Discovery, Asif Jamil Chowdhury Apr 2020

A Machine Learning Based Approach To Accelerate Catalyst Discovery, Asif Jamil Chowdhury

Theses and Dissertations

Computational catalysis, in contrast to experimental catalysis, uses approximations such as density functional theory (DFT) to compute properties of reaction intermediates. But DFT calculations for a large number of surface species on variety of active site models are resource intensive. In this work, we are building a machine learning based predictive framework for adsorption energies of intermediate species, which can reduce the computational overhead significantly. Our work includes the study and development of appropriate machine learning models and effective fingerprints or descriptors to predict energies accurately for different scenarios. Furthermore, Bayesian inverse problem, that integrates experimental catalysis with its computational …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

According to the World Bank, a key factor to poverty reduction and improving prosperity is financial inclusion. Financial service providers (FSPs) offering financially-inclusive solutions need to understand how to approach the underserved successfully. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) on legacy data can help FSPs to anticipate how prospective customers may respond when they are approached. However, it remains challenging for FSPs who are not well-versed in computer programming to implement AI projects. This paper proffers a no-coding human-centric AI-based approach to simulate the possible dynamics between the financial profiles of prospective customers collected from 45,211 contact encounters and predict …

Mineta Transportation Institute

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) aims to establish a network of autonomous and connected vehicles that communicate with one another through facilitation led by road-side units (RSUs) and a central trust authority (TA). Messages must be efficiently and securely disseminated to conserve resources and preserve network security. Currently, research in this area lacks consensus about security schemes and methods of disseminating messages. Furthermore, a current deficiency of information regarding resource optimization prevents further efficient development of this network. This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to these issues by merging both cybersecurity and data science to optimize and secure the network. …

Cross Language Information Transfer Between Modern Standard Arabic And Its Dialects – A Framework For Automatic Speech Recognition System Language Model, Tiba Zaki Abdulhameed Apr 2020

Cross Language Information Transfer Between Modern Standard Arabic And Its Dialects – A Framework For Automatic Speech Recognition System Language Model, Tiba Zaki Abdulhameed

Dissertations

Significant advances have been made with Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) applications. Yet, dialectal conversation ASR is still trailing behind due to limited language resources. As is the case in most cultures, the formal Modern Standard Arabic language is not used in daily life. Instead, varieties of regional dialects are spoken, which creates a dire need to address dialect ASR systems. Processing MSA language naturally poses considerable challenges that are passed on to the processing of its derived dialects. In dialects, many words have gradually morphed from MSA pronunciations and at many times have different usages. Also, …

Google Summer Of Code: Student Motivations And Contributions, Jefferson O. Silva, Igor Scaliante Wiese, Daniel M. Germán, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Igor Steinmacher

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Several open source software (OSS) projects participate in engagement programs like Summers of Code expecting to foster newcomers’ onboarding and receive contributions. However, scant empirical evidence identifies why students join such programs. In this paper, we study the well-established Google Summer of Code (GSoC), which is a 3-month OSS engagement program that offers stipends and mentorship to students willing to contribute to OSS projects. We combined a survey (of students and mentors) and interviews (of students) to understand what motivates students to enter GSoC. Our results show that students enter GSoC for an enriching experience, and not necessarily to become …

Identity-Based Encryption Transformation For Flexible Sharing Of Encrypted Data In Public Cloud, Robert H. Deng, Zheng Qin, Qianhong Wu, Zhenyu Guan, Robert H. Deng, Yujue Wang, Yunya Zhou Apr 2020

Identity-Based Encryption Transformation For Flexible Sharing Of Encrypted Data In Public Cloud, Robert H. Deng, Zheng Qin, Qianhong Wu, Zhenyu Guan, Robert H. Deng, Yujue Wang, Yunya Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development of cloud computing, an increasing number of individuals and organizations are sharing data in the public cloud. To protect the privacy of data stored in the cloud, a data owner usually encrypts his data in such a way that certain designated data users can decrypt the data. This raises a serious problem when the encrypted data needs to be shared to more people beyond those initially designated by the data owner. To address this problem, we introduce and formalize an identity-based encryption transformation (IBET) model by seamlessly integrating two well-established encryption mechanisms, namely identity-basedencryption (IBE) and …

A Cue Adaptive Decoder For Controllable Neural Response Generation, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang Apr 2020

A Cue Adaptive Decoder For Controllable Neural Response Generation, Weichao Wang, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Yifei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In open-domain dialogue systems, dialogue cues such as emotion, persona, and emoji can be incorporated into conversation models for strengthening the semantic relevance of generated responses. Existing neural response generation models either incorporate dialogue cue into decoder’s initial state or embed the cue indiscriminately into the state of every generated word, which may cause the gradients of the embedded cue to vanish or disturb the semantic relevance of generated words during back propagation. In this paper, we propose a Cue Adaptive Decoder (CueAD) that aims to dynamically determine the involvement of a cue at each generation step in the decoding. …

Maptransfer: Urban Air Quality Map Generation For Downscaled Sensor Deployments, Yun Cheng, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele Apr 2020

Maptransfer: Urban Air Quality Map Generation For Downscaled Sensor Deployments, Yun Cheng, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dense deployments of commodity air quality sensors have proven effective to provide spatially-resolved information on urban air pollution in real-time. However, long-term operation of a dense sensor deployment incurs enormous maintenance expenses and efforts. A cost-effective alternative is to first collect measurements with an initial dense deployment and then rely on a small subset of sensors for air quality map generation. To avoid dramatic accuracy degradation in air quality maps generated using the downscaled sparse deployment, we design MapTransfer, an air quality map generation scheme which augments the current sensor measurements from the downscaled sparse deployment with appropriate historical data …

A New Construction For Linkable Secret Handshake, Yangguang Tian, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Nan Li, Guomin Yang, Zheng Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a new construction for linkable secret handshake that allows authenticated users to perform handshake anonymously within allowable times. We define formal security models for the new construction, and prove that it can achieve session key security, anonymity, untraceability and linkable affiliation-hiding. In particular, the proposed construction ensures that (i) anyone can trace the real identities of dishonest users who perform handshakes for more than k times; and (ii) an optimal communication cost between authorized users is achieved by exploiting the proof of knowledges.

Dfseer: A Visual Analytics Approach To Facilitate Model Selection For Demand Forecasting, Dong Sun, Zezheng Feng, Yuanzhe Chen, Yong Wang, Jia Zeng, Mingxuan Yuan, Ting-Chuen Pong, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Selecting an appropriate model to forecast product demand is critical to the manufacturing industry. However, due to the data complexity, market uncertainty and users’ demanding requirements for the model, it is challenging for demand analysts to select a proper model. Although existing model selection methods can reduce the manual burden to some extent, they often fail to present model performance details on individual products and reveal the potential risk of the selected model. This paper presents DFSeer, an interactive visualization system to conduct reliable model selection for demand forecasting based on the products with similar historical demand. It supports model …

Poster Abstract: Data Communication Using Switchable Privacy Glass, Changshuo Hu, Dong Ma, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu Apr 2020

Poster Abstract: Data Communication Using Switchable Privacy Glass, Changshuo Hu, Dong Ma, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Switchable privacy glass can electronically change its state between opaque and transparent. In this work, we propose to exploit the electronic configurability of switchable glass to modulate natural light, which can be demodulated by a nearby receiver with light sensing capability to realise data communication over natural light. A key advantage is that no energy is used to generate light, as it simply modulates the existing light in the nature. We demonstrate that the proposed data communication using switchable glass modulation can achieve 33.33 bits per second communication with a bit rate below 1% under a wide range of ambient …

Reinforced Negative Sampling Over Knowledge Graph For Recommendation, Xiang Wang, Yaokun Xu, Xiangnan He, Yixin Cao, Meng Wang, Tat-Seng Chua Apr 2020

Reinforced Negative Sampling Over Knowledge Graph For Recommendation, Xiang Wang, Yaokun Xu, Xiangnan He, Yixin Cao, Meng Wang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Properly handling missing data is a fundamental challenge in recommendation. Most present works perform negative sampling from unobserved data to supply the training of recommender models with negative signals. Nevertheless, existing negative sampling strategies, either static or adaptive ones, are insufficient to yield high-quality negative samples — both informative to model training and reflective of user real needs. In this work, we hypothesize that item knowledge graph (KG), which provides rich relations among items and KG entities, could be useful to infer informative and factual negative samples. Towards this end, we develop a new negative sampling model, Knowledge Graph Policy …

Two Can Play That Game: An Adversarial Evaluation Of A Cyber-Alert Inspection System, Ankit Shah, Arunesh Sinha, Rajesh Ganesan, Sushil Jajodia, Hasan Cam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cyber-security is an important societal concern. Cyber-attacks have increased in numbers as well as in the extent of damage caused in every attack. Large organizations operate a Cyber Security Operation Center (CSOC), which forms the first line of cyber-defense. The inspection of cyber-alerts is a critical part of CSOC operations (defender or blue team). Recent work proposed a reinforcement learning (RL) based approach for the defender’s decision-making to prevent the cyber-alert queue length from growing large and overwhelming the defender. In this article, we perform a red team (adversarial) evaluation of this approach. With the recent attacks on learning-based decision-making …

Dementia is a condition in which higher mental functions are disrupted. It currently affects an estimated 57 million people throughout the world. Dementia diagnosis is difficult since neither anatomical indicator nor functional testing are currently sufficiently sensitive or specific. There remains a long list of outstanding issues that must be addressed. First, multimodal diagnosis has yet to be introduced into the early stages of dementia screening. Second, there is no accurate instrument for predicting the progression of pre-dementia. Third, non-invasive testing cannot be used to provide differential diagnoses. By creating ML models of normal and accelerated brain aging, we intend …

A Parallel Algorithm And Implementation To Compute Spatial Autocorrelation (Hotspot) Using Matlab, Mingjun Li Apr 2020

A Parallel Algorithm And Implementation To Compute Spatial Autocorrelation (Hotspot) Using Matlab, Mingjun Li

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Being a spatial autocorrelation visualization tool in recent years, hotspot is often used in various fields, such as disease analysis, crime analysis, and weather conditions analysis and prediction in a certain area. Most of the research in hot spot analysis is in applying the concept to a variety of fields and to gain insights on the statistical significance prevalent in the clustering of data. Only a few of them discussed the efficiency and optimization of the algorithm. Commonly, these kinds of analyses would be based upon a huge dataset about space and time, and the conventional algorithm would take too …

A Critical Study Of Geospatial Algorithm Use In Crime Analysis And Predictive Policing, Katy Weathington Apr 2020

A Critical Study Of Geospatial Algorithm Use In Crime Analysis And Predictive Policing, Katy Weathington

Master's Theses (2009 -)

We examine in detail two geospatial analysis algorithms commonly used in predictive policing. The k-means clustering algorithm is used to partition input data into k clusters, while Kernel Density Estimation algorithms convert geospatial data into a 2-dimensional probability distribution function. Both algorithms serve unique roles in predictive policing, helping to inform the allocation of limited police resources. Through critical analysis of the k-means algorithm, we found that parameter choice can greatly impact how crime in a city is clustered, which therefor impacts how mental models of crime in the city are developed. Interviews with crime analysts who regularly used k-means …

An Educational Operating System Supporting Computer Security, Patrick Joseph Mcgee

Master's Theses (2009 -)

It is uncommon to teach computer security concepts using an embedded operating system. Few educational operating systems are implemented in systems courses, and a small subset of them are used to teach hardware-related security elements such as system calls. This work explores relevant approaches to teaching low-level security concepts, including difficulties associated with building a hands-on learning environment. This work also presents additions to the Embedded Xinu kernel that support system calls and memory protection on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+. Provided sample assignments are intended to help give students a solid understanding of intricate hardware details. Results from an …

Account Recovery Methods For Two-Factor Authentication (2fa): An Exploratory Study, Lauren Nicole Tiller Apr 2020

Account Recovery Methods For Two-Factor Authentication (2fa): An Exploratory Study, Lauren Nicole Tiller

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

System administrators have started to adopt two-factor authentication (2FA) to increase user account resistance to cyber-attacks. Systems with 2FA require users to verify their identity using a password and a second-factor authentication device to gain account access. This research found that 60% of users only enroll one second-factor device to their account. If a user’s second factor becomes unavailable, systems are using different procedures to ensure its authorized owner recovers the account. Account recovery is essentially a bypass of the system’s main security protocols and needs to be handled as an alternative authentication process (Loveless, 2018). The current research aimed …

Truck Trailer Classification Using Side-Fire Light Detection And Ranging (Lidar) Data, Olcay Sahin Apr 2020

Truck Trailer Classification Using Side-Fire Light Detection And Ranging (Lidar) Data, Olcay Sahin

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Classification of vehicles into distinct groups is critical for many applications, including freight and commodity flow modeling, pavement management and design, tolling, air quality monitoring, and intelligent transportation systems. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) developed a standardized 13-category vehicle classification ruleset, which meets the needs of many traffic data user applications. However, some applications need high-resolution data for modeling and analysis. For example, the type of commodity being carried must be known in the freight modeling framework. Unfortunately, this information is not available at the state or metropolitan level, or it is expensive to obtain from current resources.

Nevertheless, using …
