Hierarchical Syntactic Models For Human Activity Recognition Through Mobility Traces, Enrico Casella, Marco Ortolani, Simone Silvestri, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recognizing users’ daily life activities without disrupting their lifestyle is a key functionality to enable a broad variety of advanced services for a Smart City, from energy-efficient management of urban spaces to mobility optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel method for human activity recognition from a collection of outdoor mobility traces acquired through wearable devices. Our method exploits the regularities naturally present in human mobility patterns to construct syntactic models in the form of finite state automata, thanks to an approach known as grammatical inference. We also introduce a measure of similarity that accounts for the intrinsic hierarchical …
Deep Learning For Remote Sensing Image Processing, Yan Lu
Deep Learning For Remote Sensing Image Processing, Yan Lu
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Remote sensing images have many applications such as ground object detection, environmental change monitoring, urban growth monitoring and natural disaster damage assessment. As of 2019, there were roughly 700 satellites listing “earth observation” as their primary application. Both spatial and temporal resolutions of satellite images have improved consistently in recent years and provided opportunities in resolving fine details on the Earth's surface. In the past decade, deep learning techniques have revolutionized many applications in the field of computer vision but have not fully been explored in remote sensing image processing. In this dissertation, several state-of-the-art deep learning models have been …
A Framework For Verifying The Fixity Of Archived Web Resources, Mohamed Aturban
A Framework For Verifying The Fixity Of Archived Web Resources, Mohamed Aturban
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
The number of public and private web archives has increased, and we implicitly trust content delivered by these archives. Fixity is checked to ensure that an archived resource has remained unaltered (i.e., fixed) since the time it was captured. Currently, end users do not have the ability to easily verify the fixity of content preserved in web archives. For instance, if a web page is archived in 1999 and replayed in 2019, how do we know that it has not been tampered with during those 20 years? In order for the users of web archives to verify that archived web …
Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In a Web plagued by disappearing resources, Web archive collections provide a valuable means of preserving Web resources important to the study of past events. These archived collections start with seed URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) hand-selected by curators. Curators produce high quality seeds by removing non-relevant URIs and adding URIs from credible and authoritative sources, but this ability comes at a cost: it is time consuming to collect these seeds. The result of this is a shortage of curators, a lack of Web archive collections for various important news events, and a need for an automatic system for generating seeds. …
Virtual Temari: Artistically Inspired Mathematics, Carl Giuffre, Lee Stemkoski
Virtual Temari: Artistically Inspired Mathematics, Carl Giuffre, Lee Stemkoski
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Technology can be a significant aide in understanding and appreciating geometry, beyond theoretical considerations. Both fiber art and technology have been employed as a significant aide and an inspiring vessel in education to explore geometry. The Japanese craft known as temari, or "hand-balls", combines important artistic, spiritual, and familial values, and provides one such approach to exploring geometry. Mathematically, the artwork of temari may be classified based on whether they are inspired by polyhedra and discrete patterns or by periodic functional curves. The resulting designs of these categories provide an ancient vantage for displaying spherical patterns. We illustrate a …
Probabilistic Error Upper Bounds For Distributed Statistical Estimation, Matthew Jin
Probabilistic Error Upper Bounds For Distributed Statistical Estimation, Matthew Jin
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
The size of modern datasets has spurred interest in distributed statistical estimation. We consider a scenario in which randomly drawn data is spread across a set of machines, and the task is to provide an estimate for the location parameter from which the data was drawn. We provide a one-shot protocol for computing this estimate which generalizes results from Braverman et al. [2], which provides a protocol under the assumption that the distribution is Gaussian, as well as from Duchi et al. [4], which assumes that the distribution is supported on the compact set [−1,1]. Like that of Braverman et …

Integrating Data Science Ethics Into An Undergraduate Major, Benjamin Baumer, Randi L. Garcia, Albert Y. Kim, Katherine M. Kinnaird, Miles Q. Ott
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
We present a programmatic approach to incorporating ethics into an undergraduate major in statistical and data sciences. We discuss departmental-level initiatives designed to meet the National Academy of Sciences recommendation for weaving ethics into the curriculum from top-to-bottom as our majors progress from our introductory courses to our senior capstone course, as well as from side-to-side through co-curricular programming. We also provide six examples of data science ethics modules used in five different courses at our liberal arts college, each focusing on a different ethical consideration. The modules are designed to be portable such that they can be flexibly incorporated …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To enhance the performance of artificial bee colony algorithm, a quantum-inspired bee colony algorithm was proposed. In the proposed approach, the bees were encoded with the qubits described on the Bloch sphere. The evolutionary search was achieved by rotating the qubit about the rotation axis on the Bloch sphere. The Bloch coordinates of qubit can be obtained by measuring with the Pauli matrices, and the optimization solutions can be presented through the solution space transformation. The highlight advantages of this method are the ability to simultaneously adjust two parameters of a qubit and automatically achieve the best match between …

Performance Analysis Of Netted Radar Data Fusion Systems, Zhijie Chen, Bin Rao, Yongzhen Li, Zhiwei Zong
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The performance analysis of netted radar data fusion systems was proposed. The principles of two representative radar netting modes (i.e., centralized fusion and distributed fusion) were introduced and the associated capabilities of anti-jamming, anti-stealth, fusion accuracy, fusion discrimination, and communication requirements were quantitatively analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the netting essence is, centralized fusion by using ‘or' rule to complement information and realize trajectory composition whereas distributed fusion by using ‘and' rule to reduce information redundancy and realize discrimination ability. The research can provide some enlightenment for the newly-developed intellective netted radar data fusion systems.

Besides, the CS-PML was adopted to investigate the radiation characteristic of the …

Compressed-Sensing Based Up-Sampling Method For Fluid Simulation, Yijing Qian, Xubo Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In computer fluid animation, the grid-based Euler method is a well-matured and effective way of simulating fluids, but a key bottleneck of Euler method is that it is limited to the traditional Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem in sampling step. So it cannot effectively reduce the massive data and computing of the large-scale flow fields. In order to solve this problem, compressed sensing theory was used to probe a way to break through the limitation of the sampling theorem in fluid simulation. The sparsity and compressibility of fluid data were explored, then applicable sampling function, compressive basis and reconstruction algorithm for …
