Evaluating Stochastic Rankings With Expected Exposure, Fernando Diaz, Bhaskar Mitra, Michael D. Ekstrand, Asia J. Biega, Ben Carterette

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce the concept of expected exposure as the average attention ranked items receive from users over repeated samples of the same query. Furthermore, we advocate for the adoption of the principle of equal expected exposure: given a fixed information need, no item should receive more or less expected exposure than any other item of the same relevance grade. We argue that this principle is desirable for many retrieval objectives and scenarios, including topical diversity and fair ranking. Leveraging user models from existing retrieval metrics, we propose a general evaluation methodology based on expected exposure and draw connections to related …

Agent-Based Modelling Of Values: The Case Of Value Sensitive Design For Refugee Logistics, Christine Boshuijzen-Van Burken, Ross J. Gore, Frank Dignum, Lamber Royakkers, Phillip Wozny, F. Leron Shults Oct 2020

Agent-Based Modelling Of Values: The Case Of Value Sensitive Design For Refugee Logistics, Christine Boshuijzen-Van Burken, Ross J. Gore, Frank Dignum, Lamber Royakkers, Phillip Wozny, F. Leron Shults

VMASC Publications

We have used value sensitive design as a method to develop an agent-based model of values in humanitarian logistics for refugees. Schwartz’s theory of universal values is implemented in the model in such a way that agents can make value trade-offs, which are operationalized into a measure of refugee wellbeing and a measure of public opinion about how the refugee logistics is being handled. By trying out different ‘value scenarios’, stakeholders who are responsible for, or involved in refugee logistics can have insights into the effects of various value choices. The model is visualized and made usable as a platform …

Asymptotically-Optimal Topological Nearest-Neighbor Filtering, Read Sandström, Jory Denny, Nancy M. Amato Oct 2020

Asymptotically-Optimal Topological Nearest-Neighbor Filtering, Read Sandström, Jory Denny, Nancy M. Amato

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Nearest-neighbor finding is a major bottleneck for sampling-based motion planning algorithms. The cost of finding nearest neighbors grows with the size of the roadmap, leading to a significant computational bottleneck for problems which require many configurations to find a solution. In this work, we develop a method of mapping configurations of a jointed robot to neighborhoods in the workspace that supports fast search for configurations in nearby neighborhoods. This expedites nearest-neighbor search by locating a small set of the most likely candidates for connecting to the query with a local plan. We show that this filtering technique can preserve asymptotically-optimal …

Topology-Guided Roadmap Construction With Dynamic Region Sampling, Read Sandström, Diane Uwacu, Jory Denny, Nancy M. Amato Oct 2020

Topology-Guided Roadmap Construction With Dynamic Region Sampling, Read Sandström, Diane Uwacu, Jory Denny, Nancy M. Amato

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Many types of planning problems require discovery of multiple pathways through the environment, such as multi-robot coordination or protein ligand binding. The Probabilistic Roadmap (PRM) algorithm is a powerful tool for this case, but often cannot efficiently connect the roadmap in the presence of narrow passages. In this letter, we present a guidance mechanism that encourages the rapid construction of well-connected roadmaps with PRM methods. We leverage a topological skeleton of the workspace to track the algorithm's progress in both covering and connecting distinct neighborhoods, and employ this information to focus computation on the uncovered and unconnected regions. We demonstrate …

Testing Mediation Via Indirect Effects In Pls-Sem: A Social Networking Site Illustration, Murad Moqbel, Rakesh Guduru, Ahasan Harun

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Mediation analysis, in the context of structural equation modeling via partial least squares (PLSSEM), affords a better understanding of the relationships among independent and dependent variables, when the variables seem to not have a definite connection. In this paper, we demonstrate such an analysis in the context of social networking sites, using WarpPLS, a leading PLS-SEM software tool.

Analyzing Adverse Events From Publicly Available Web Sources, Alexander Salamun Oct 2020

Analyzing Adverse Events From Publicly Available Web Sources, Alexander Salamun

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Data mining for drug-reaction associations is a major topic in the pharmaceutical industry. Historically the focus has been on using privately owned and maintained datasets consisting of information that has been transformed via the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and privatized reporting systems that house the data from clinical trials. Our focus will be on building a pipeline that demonstrates an open source solution for building a drug’s safety profile from data collection through signal detection. In contrast this pipeline primarily uses the openFDA and social media data available through Reddit with all analysis being done in the R …

Towards Developing A Mobile-Based Care For Children With Asd Using Remote Experience Sampling Method (Mcare), Dipranjan Das

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the most prevalent among all of the neurodevelopmental disorders, which have increased 20-30 times in the last 50 years. A child with ASD requires regular monitoring, care, and support. But, the existing social-cultural-financial constraints and the scarcity of mental health care practitioners have deprived the families raising children with ASD in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Bangladesh. However, the recent overwhelming adoption (~80%) of mobile phones has created an opportunity to improve the existing practice of care using affordable mobile applications. mCARE, a mobile-based care system, has been developed to reduce the gap between families …

A Centralised Multi-Objective Model Predictive Control For Biventricular Assist Devices, Vivian Koh Ci Ai Oct 2020

A Centralised Multi-Objective Model Predictive Control For Biventricular Assist Devices, Vivian Koh Ci Ai

Student Works (2020-2029)

Heart failure is defined as failure of heart to deliver adequate blood flow rate to support tissue perfusion. Heart failure can be treated by implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for left heart failure patients, or a biventricular assist device (BiVAD) for bi-heart failure patients. Since left heart failure predominates right heart failure, all commercial ventricular assist devices are LVADs. Therefore, two LVADs are frequently used as BiVAD for bi-heart failure patients. Clinically, the constant speed (CS) control of BiVAD fails to adapt pump flow rate according to physiological changes, thus putting patients at risk of ventricular suction …

A Critical Genre Analysis Of The User Requirement Specification Report In The Information Technology Industry, Shahizan Shaharuddin

Student Works (2020-2029)

While it has been established that discursive practices involving writing are highly situated and context-bound, few local studies have examined the processes involved in the construction of texts and the shaping of the intended text. Recent perspectives on writing as ways of working and acting, and texts as social action suggest that studying the processes behind the construction of a text could provide a clearer understanding of the discursive practices involved in the shaping of the text. This is seen as relevant to professional writing context in the present study as texts are often shaped to facilitate the social action …

Leveraging Very-High Spatial Resolution Hyperspectral And Thermal Uav Imageries For Characterizing Diurnal Indicators Of Grapevine Physiology, Matthew Maimaitiyiming, Vasit Sagan, Paheding Sidike, Maitiniyazi Maimaitijiang, Allison J. Miller, Misha Kwasniewski

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Efficient and accurate methods to monitor crop physiological responses help growers better understand crop physiology and improve crop productivity. In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and sensor technology have enabled image acquisition at very-high spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions. However, potential applications and limitations of very-high-resolution (VHR) hyperspectral and thermal UAV imaging for characterization of plant diurnal physiology remain largely unknown, due to issues related to shadow and canopy heterogeneity. In this study, we propose a canopy zone-weighting (CZW) method to leverage the potential of VHR (≤9 cm) hyperspectral and thermal UAV imageries in estimating physiological indicators, …

Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem With Stochastic Customers, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau Oct 2020

Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem With Stochastic Customers, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In real-world urban logistics operations, changes to the routes and tasks occur in response to dynamic events. To ensure customers’ demands are met, planners need to make these changes quickly (sometimes instantaneously). This paper proposes the formulation of a dynamic vehicle routing problem with time windows and both known and stochastic customers as a route-based Markov Decision Process. We propose a solution approach that combines Deep Reinforcement Learning (specifically neural networks-based TemporalDifference learning with experience replay) to approximate the value function and a routing heuristic based on Simulated Annealing, called DRLSA. Our approach enables optimized re-routing decision to be generated …

Evaluating Methods For Students To Identify And Clarify Doubts In Computing Design Courses, Eng Lieh Ouh, Benjamin Gan Oct 2020

Evaluating Methods For Students To Identify And Clarify Doubts In Computing Design Courses, Eng Lieh Ouh, Benjamin Gan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This full paper evaluates the effectiveness of doubts identification and clarification methods applied in undergraduate computing design courses. Many undergraduate courses in computing require students to understand abstract design concepts. Exposed to the design concepts for the first time, students need to be able to identify and clarify their doubts about the abstract concepts in order to make the right design decisions. In this study, we seek to evaluate the effectiveness of six methods that help students to identify and clarify their doubts. These methods vary in their timing (immediate or delayed), communication style (online or face-to-face) and participation style …

Generating Question Titles For Stack Overflow From Mined Code Snippets, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, John Grundy, David Lo, Yuan-Fang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow has been heavily used by software developers as a popular way to seek programming-related information from peers via the internet. The Stack Overflow community recommends users to provide the related code snippet when they are creating a question to help others better understand it and offer their help. Previous studies have shown that a significant number of these questions are of low-quality and not attractive to other potential experts in Stack Overflow. These poorly asked questions are less likely to receive useful answers and hinder the overall knowledge generation and sharing process. Considering one of the reasons for …

Catch You If You Deceive Me: Verifiable And Privacy-Aware Truth Discovery In Crowdsensing Systems, Guowen Xu, Hongwei Li, Shengmin Xu, Hao Ren, Yonghui Zhang, Jianfei Sun, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Truth Discovery (TD) is to infer truthful information by estimating the reliability of users in crowdsensing systems. To protect data privacy, many Privacy-Preserving Truth Discovery (PPTD) approaches have been proposed. However, all existing PPTD solutions do not consider a fundamental issue of trust. That is, if the data aggregator (e.g., the cloud server) is not trustworthy, how can an entity be convinced that the data aggregator has correctly performed the PPTD? A "lazy"cloud server may partially follow the deployed protocols to save its computing and communication resources, or worse, maliciously forge the results for some shady deals. In this paper, …

Viscene: A Collaborative Authoring Tool For Scene Descriptions In Videos, Rosiana Natalie, Ebrima Jarjue, Hernisa Kacorri, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Audio descriptions can make the visual content in videos accessible to people with visual impairments. However, the majority of the online videos lack audio descriptions due in part to the shortage of experts who can create high-quality descriptions. We present ViScene, a web-based authoring tool that taps into the larger pool of sighted non-experts to help them generate high-quality descriptions via two feedback mechanisms - succinct visualizations and comments from an expert. Through a mixed-design study with N = 6 participants, we explore the usability of ViScene and the quality of the descriptions created by sighted non-experts with and without …

Livesnippets: Voice-Based Live Authoring Of Multimedia Articles About Experiences, Hyeongcheol Kim, Shengdong Zhao, Can Liu, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We transform traditional experience writing into in-situ voice-based multimedia authoring. Documenting experiences digitally in blogs and journals is a common activity that allows people to socially connect with others by sharing their experiences (e.g. travelogue). However, documenting such experiences can be time-consuming and cognitively demanding as it is typically done OUT-OF-CONTEXT (after the actual experience). We propose in-situ voice-based multimedia authoring (IVA), an alternative workflow to allow IN-CONTEXT experience documentation. Unlike the traditional approach, IVA encourages in-context content creations using voice-based multimedia input and stores them in multi-modal "snippets". The snippets can be rearranged to form multimedia articles and can …

Iot-Enabled Community Care For Ageing-In-Place: The Singapore Experience, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paradigm of ageing-in-place – where the elderly live and age in their own homes, independently and safely, with care provided by the community – is compelling, especially in societies that face both shortages in institutionalized eldercare resources, and rapidly ageing populations. When the number of elderly who live alone rises rapidly, support and care from their communities become increasing crucial. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. They can become the fundamental enabler for smart community eldercare. In this presentation, I would like to share our experiences and learnings gathered from large-scale deployments of IoT systems in in-home and community spaces …

Revocable And Certificateless Public Auditing For Cloud Storage, Yinghui Zhang, Tiantian Zhang, Shengmin Xu, Guowen Xu, Dong Zheng Oct 2020

Revocable And Certificateless Public Auditing For Cloud Storage, Yinghui Zhang, Tiantian Zhang, Shengmin Xu, Guowen Xu, Dong Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Plenty of computing and storage resources in the cloud are provided for users with restricted computing and storage resources, which has attracted the attention of many researchers. A generic blockchain-based cloud data auditing scheme is proposed, which is compatible with any blockchains including the bitcoin blockchain. In the data integrity checking scheme, certificateless signature (CLS) can be used to verify the identity of users. Besides, the key exchange is utilized in the key generation, which can eliminate the security channel to achieve system robustness. Considering the real situation, the users who join the cloud storage system may be revoked for …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We revisit our contributions on visual sentiment analysis for online review images published at ACM Multimedia 2017, where we develop item-oriented and user-oriented convolutional neural networks that better capture the interaction of image features with specific expressions of users or items. In this work, we outline the experimental claims as well as describe the procedures to reproduce the results therein. In addition, we provide artifacts including data sets and code to replicate the experiments.

Reinforcement Learning For Zone Based Multiagent Pathfinding Under Uncertainty, Jiajing Ling, Tarun Gupta, Akshat Kumar Oct 2020

Reinforcement Learning For Zone Based Multiagent Pathfinding Under Uncertainty, Jiajing Ling, Tarun Gupta, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of multiple agents finding their paths from respective sources to destination nodes in a graph (also called MAPF). Most existing approaches assume that all agents move at fixed speed, and that a single node accommodates only a single agent. Motivated by the emerging applications of autonomous vehicles such as drone traffic management, we present zone-based path finding (or ZBPF) where agents move among zones, and agents' movements require uncertain travel time. Furthermore, each zone can accommodate multiple agents (as per its capacity). We also develop a simulator for ZBPF which provides a clean interface from the …

Online Traffic Signal Control Through Sample-Based Constrained Optimization, Srishti Dhamija, Alolika Gon, Pradeep Varakantham, William Yeoh Oct 2020

Online Traffic Signal Control Through Sample-Based Constrained Optimization, Srishti Dhamija, Alolika Gon, Pradeep Varakantham, William Yeoh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traffic congestion reduces productivity of individuals by increasing time spent in traffic and also increases pollution. To reduce traffic congestion by better handling dynamic traffic patterns, recent work has focused on online traffic signal control. Typically, the objective in traffic signal control is to minimize expected delay over all vehicles given the uncertainty associated with the vehicle turn movements at intersections. In order to ensure responsiveness in decision making, a typical approach is to compute a schedule that minimizes the delay for the expected scenario of vehicle movements instead of minimizing expected delay over the feasible vehicle movement scenarios. Such …

Dual-Slam: A Framework For Robust Single Camera Navigation, Huajian Huang, Wen-Yan Lin, Siying Liu, Dong Zhang, Sai-Kit Yeung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) seeks to provide a moving agent with real-time self-localization. To achieve real-time speed, SLAM incrementally propagates position estimates. This makes SLAM fast but also makes it vulnerable to local pose estimation failures. As local pose estimation is ill-conditioned, local pose estimation failures happen regularly, making the overall SLAM system brittle. This paper attempts to correct this problem. We note that while local pose estimation is ill-conditioned, pose estimation over longer sequences is well-conditioned. Thus, local pose estimation errors eventually manifest themselves as mapping inconsistencies. When this occurs, we save the current map and activate two …
