Adversarial Specification Mining, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo
Adversarial Specification Mining, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There have been numerous studies on mining temporal specifications from execution traces. These approaches learn finite-state automata (FSA) from execution traces when running tests. To learn accurate specifications of a software system, many tests are required. Existing approaches generalize from a limited number of traces or use simple test generation strategies. Unfortunately, these strategies may not exercise uncommon usage patterns of a software system. To address this problem, we propose a new approach, adversarial specification mining, and develop a prototype, DICE (Diversity through Counter-Examples). DICE has two components: DICE-Tester and DICE-Miner. After mining Linear Temporal Logic specifications from an input …
Technical Q8a Site Answer Recommendation Via Question Boosting, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy
Technical Q8a Site Answer Recommendation Via Question Boosting, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers have heavily used online question and answer platforms to seek help to solve their technical problems. However, a major problem with these technical Q&A sites is "answer hungriness" i.e., a large number of questions remain unanswered or unresolved, and users have to wait for a long time or painstakingly go through the provided answers with various levels of quality. To alleviate this time-consuming problem, we propose a novel DeepAns neural network-based approach to identify the most relevant answer among a set of answer candidates. Our approach follows a three-stage process: question boosting, label establishment, and answer recommendation. Given …

Context-Aware Retrieval-Based Deep Commit Message Generation, Haoye Wang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Qiang He, Xinyu Wang, John Grundy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Commit messages recorded in version control systems contain valuable information for software development, maintenance, and comprehension. Unfortunately, developers often commit code with empty or poor quality commit messages. To address this issue, several studies have proposed approaches to generate commit messages from commit diffs. Recent studies make use of neural machine translation algorithms to try and translate git diffs into commit messages and have achieved some promising results. However, these learning-based methods tend to generate high-frequency words but ignore low-frequency ones. In addition, they suffer from exposure bias issues, which leads to a gap between training phase and testing phase. …
Sustainability Of Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of Funding Targets And Backer Satisfaction, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Sustainability Of Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of Funding Targets And Backer Satisfaction, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rewards-based crowdfunding presents an information asymmetry for participants due to the funding mechanism used. Campaign-backers trust creators to complete projects and deliver rewards as outlined prior to the fundraising process, but creators may discover better opportunities as they progress with a project. Despite this, the all-or-nothing (AON) mechanism on crowdfunding platforms incentivizes creators to set meager funding-targets that are easier to achieve but may offer limited slack when creators wish to simultaneously pursue emerging opportunities later in the project. We explore the related issues of how funding targets seem to be selected by the creators, and how dissatisfaction with the …
Creators And Backers In Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: Will Incentive Misalignment Affect Kickstarter's Sustainability?, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Creators And Backers In Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: Will Incentive Misalignment Affect Kickstarter's Sustainability?, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Incentive misalignment in rewards-based crowd-funding occurs because creators may benefit disproportionately from fundraising, while backers may benefit disproportionately from the quality of project deliverables. The resulting principal-agent relationship means backers rely on campaign information to identify signs of moral hazard, adverse selection, and risk attitude asymmetry. We analyze campaign information related to fundraising, and compare how different information affects eventual backer satisfaction, based on an extensive dataset from Kickstarter. The data analysis uses a multi-model comparison to reveal similarities and contrasts in the estimated drivers of dependent variables that capture different outcomes in Kickstarter’s funding campaigns, using a linear probability …

Consumers often lack information about the origin and provenance of the products they buy. They may ask: Is a food product truly organic? Or, what is the origin of the gemstone in the ring I purchased? They also may have sustainability concerns about the footprint of a product at the end of its life. Producers and sellers, meanwhile, wish to know how longitudinal tracking of the provenance of products and their components can boost their sales prices and after-market value, and re- veal new business opportunities. We focus on how the product lifecycle (PLC) can be leveraged to track information …

Smart Contracts: Will Fintech Be The Catalyst For The Next Global Financial Crisis?, Randall Duran, Paul Griffin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Purpose: This paper aims to examine the risks associated with smart contracts, a disruptive financial technology (FinTech) innovation, and assesses how in the future they could threaten the integrity of the global financial system. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative approach is used to identify risk factors related to the use of new financial innovations, by examining how over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives contributed to the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) which occurred during 2007 and 2008. Based on this analysis, the potential for similar concerns with smart contracts are evaluated, drawing on the failure of The DAO on the Ethereum blockchain, which involved the loss …

Learning Adl Daily Routines With Spatiotemporal Neural Networks, Shan Gao, Ah-Hwee Tan, Rossi Setchi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The activities of daily living (ADLs) refer to the activities performed by individuals on a daily basis and are the indicators of a person’s habits, lifestyle, and wellbeing. Learning an individual’s ADL daily routines has significant value in the healthcare domain. Specifically, ADL recognition and inter-ADL pattern learning problems have been studied extensively in the past couple of decades. However, discovering the patterns performed in a day and clustering them into ADL daily routines has been a relatively unexplored research area. In this paper, a self-organizing neural network model, called the Spatiotemporal ADL Adaptive Resonance Theory (STADLART), is proposed for …

As an essential element of the next generation Internet, Internet of Things (IoT) has been undergoing an extensive development in recent years. In addition to the enhancement of peoples daily lives, IoT devices also generate/gather a massive amount of data that could be utilized by machine learning and big data analytics for different applications. Due to the machine-to-machine communication nature of IoT, data security and privacy are crucial issues that must be addressed to prevent different cyber attacks (e.g., impersonation and data pollution/poisoning attacks). Nevertheless, due to the constrained computation power and the diversity of IoT devices, it is a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There have been emerging a number of benchmarks and techniques for the detection of deepfakes. However, very few works study the detection of incrementally appearing deepfakes in the real-world scenarios. To simulate the wild scenes, this paper suggests a continual deepfake detection benchmark (CDDB) over a new collection of deepfakes from both known and unknown generative models. The suggested CDDB designs multiple evaluations on the detection over easy, hard, and long sequence of deepfake tasks, with a set of appropriate measures. In addition, we exploit multiple approaches to adapt multiclass incremental learning methods, commonly used in the continual visual recognition, …

Smart Scribbles For Image Matting, Yang Xin, Yu Qiao, Shaozhe Chen, Shengfeng He, Baocai Yin, Qiang Zhang, Xiaopeng Wei, Rynson W. H. Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Image matting is an ill-posed problem that usually requires additional user input, such as trimaps or scribbles. Drawing a fine trimap requires a large amount of user effort, while using scribbles can hardly obtain satisfactory alpha mattes for non-professional users. Some recent deep learning-based matting networks rely on large-scale composite datasets for training to improve performance, resulting in the occasional appearance of obvious artifacts when processing natural images. In this article, we explore the intrinsic relationship between user input and alpha mattes and strike a balance between user effort and the quality of alpha mattes. In particular, we propose an …
3d Dental Biometrics: Automatic Pose-Invariant Dental Arch Extraction And Matching, Xin Zhong, Zhiyuan Zhang
3d Dental Biometrics: Automatic Pose-Invariant Dental Arch Extraction And Matching, Xin Zhong, Zhiyuan Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A novel automatic pose-invariant dental arch extraction and matching framework is developed for 3D dental identification using laser-scanned dental plasters. In our previous attempt [1-5], 3D point-based algorithms have been developed and they have shown a few advantages over existing 2D dental identifications. This study is a continuous effort in developing arch-based algorithms to extract and match dental arch feature in an automatic and pose-invariant way. As best as we know, this is the first attempt at automatic dental arch extraction and matching for 3D dental identification. A Radial Ray Algorithm (RRA) is proposed by projecting dental arch shape from …

Privattnet: Predicting Privacy Risks In Images Using Visual Attention, Zhang Chen, Thivya Kandappu, Vigneshwaran Subbaraju
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Visual privacy concerns associated with image sharing is a critical issue that need to be addressed to enable safe and lawful use of online social platforms. Users of social media platforms often suffer from no guidance in sharing sensitive images in public, and often face with social and legal consequences. Given the recent success of visual attention based deep learning methods in measuring abstract phenomena like image memorability, we are motivated to investigate whether visual attention based methods could be useful in measuring psychophysical phenomena like “privacy sensitivity”. In this paper we propose PrivAttNet – a visual attention based approach, …
Partial Adversarial Behavior Deception In Security Games, Thanh H. Nguyen, Arunesh Sinha, He He
Partial Adversarial Behavior Deception In Security Games, Thanh H. Nguyen, Arunesh Sinha, He He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning attacker behavior is an important research topic in security games as security agencies are often uncertain about attackers’ decision making. Previous work has focused on developing various behavioral models of attackers based on historical attack data. However, a clever attacker can manipulate its attacks to fail such attack-driven learning, leading to ineffective defense strategies. We study attacker behavior deception with three main contributions. First, we propose a new model, named partial behavior deception model, in which there is a deceptive attacker (among multiple attackers) who controls a portion of attacks. Our model captures real-world security scenarios such as wildlife …
Infinite-Duration All-Pay Bidding Games, Guy Avni, Ismäel Jecker, Dorde Zikelic
Infinite-Duration All-Pay Bidding Games, Guy Avni, Ismäel Jecker, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In a two-player zero-sum graph game the players move a token throughout a graph to produce an infinite path, which determines the winner or payoff of the game. Traditionally, the players alternate turns in moving the token. In bidding games, however, the players have budgets, and in each turn, we hold an "auction" (bidding) to determine which player moves the token: both players simultaneously submit bids and the higher bidder moves the token. The bidding mechanisms differ in their payment schemes. Bidding games were largely studied with variants of first-price bidding in which only the higher bidder pays his bid. …

Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Clinical Decision Support System In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Yang Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving clinical decision support system using Naïve Bayesian (NB) classifier, hereafter referred to as Peneus, designed for the outsourced cloud computing environment. Peneus allows one to use patient health information to train the NB classifier privately, which can then be used to predict a patient's (undiagnosed) disease based on his/her symptoms in a single communication round. Specifically, we design secure Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) integer circuits using the fully homomorphic encryption scheme, which can greatly increase the performance compared with the original secure integer circuit. Then, we present a privacy-preserving historical Personal Health …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Structured Encryption (STE), which allows a server to provide secure search services on encrypted data structures, has been widely investigated in recent years. To meet expressive search requirements in practical applications, a large number of STE constructions have been proposed either on textual keywords or spatial data. However, STE on spatio-textual data, which are widely used in location-based services, has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we formally define the notion of Spatial Keyword Structured Encryption (SKSE) and propose several concrete SKSE constructions with various efficiencysecurity trade-offs. Firstly, we propose a basic construction with linear search complexity, which only …

In this paper, we review a few key themes of Ting-Peng (TP) Liang’s research. We first discuss some of his major contributions to information systems (IS) in the areas of electronic commerce, mobile commerce, and crowd commerce. Future research directions for these three themes are also discussed in the paper. TP Liang is also an early proponent of stage models although this stream of research has yet to receive the importance it deserves in the IS community. Previous seminal theoretical accounts in IS have generally separated variance and process models, the latter is useful in modeling changes in the explanatory …

This research examines why and how consumers switch their mobile phones. We propose a framework that is grounded on decision-making and motivational theories and draws on the findings from a multinational qualitative survey on consumers’ mobile phone switching process. We show that consumers’ pre-switching decisions are affected by push and pull factors, their mobile phone selections are based on utilitarian or hedonic values, and their justifications for switching are based on cognition or affect. Furthermore, we identify two archetypical routes (i.e., cognitive and affective routes) and three conjoint routes that explain the dichotomic switching processes in pre-switch, switch, and post-switch …
Lightweight Encryption Based Security Package For Wireless Body Area Network, Sangwon Shin
Lightweight Encryption Based Security Package For Wireless Body Area Network, Sangwon Shin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the demand of individual health monitoring rose, Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) are becoming highly distinctive within health applications. Nowadays, WBAN is much easier to access then what it used to be. However, due to WBAN’s limitation, properly sophisticated security protocols do not exist. As WBAN devices deal with sensitive data and could be used as a threat to the owner of the data or their family, securing individual devices is highly important. Despite the importance in securing data, existing WBAN security methods are focused on providing light weight security methods. This led to most security methods for WBAN …
Maidrl: Semi-Centralized Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Using Agent Influence, Anthony Lee Harris
Maidrl: Semi-Centralized Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Using Agent Influence, Anthony Lee Harris
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In recent years, reinforcement learning algorithms, a subset of machine learning that focuses on solving problems through trial-and-error learning, have been used in the field of multi-agent systems to help the agents with interactions and cooperation on a variety of tasks. Given the enormous success of reinforcement learning in single-agent systems like Chess, Shogi, and Go, it is natural for the next step to be the expansion into multi-agent systems. However, controlling multiple agents simultaneously is extremely challenging, as the complexity increases tremendously with the number of agents in the system. Existing approaches in this regard use a wide range …
A Multi-Resolution Graph Convolution Network For Contiguous Epitope Prediction, Lisa Oh
A Multi-Resolution Graph Convolution Network For Contiguous Epitope Prediction, Lisa Oh
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Computational methods for predicting binding interfaces between antigens and antibodies (epitopes and paratopes) are faster and cheaper than traditional experimental structure determination methods. A sufficiently reliable computational predictor that could scale to large sets of available antibody sequence data could thus inform and expedite many biomedical pursuits, such as better understanding immune responses to vaccination and natural infection and developing better drugs and vaccines. However, current state-of-the-art predictors produce discontiguous predictions, e.g., predicting the epitope in many different spots on an antigen, even though in reality they typically comprise a single localized region. We seek to produce contiguous predicted epitopes, …
Covert Computation In Staged Self-Assembly: Verification Is Pspace-Complete, David Caballero, Timothy Gomez, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie
Covert Computation In Staged Self-Assembly: Verification Is Pspace-Complete, David Caballero, Timothy Gomez, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Staged self-assembly has proven to be a powerful abstract model of self-assembly by modeling laboratory techniques where several nanoscale systems are allowed to assemble separately and then be mixed at a later stage. A fundamental problem in self-assembly is Unique Assembly Verification (UAV), which asks whether a single final assembly is uniquely constructed. This has previously been shown to be Π^{p}₂-hard in staged self-assembly with a constant number of stages, but a more precise complexity classification was left open related to the polynomial hierarchy.
Covert Computation was recently introduced as a way to compute a function while hiding the input …
How Much Can Potential Jurors Tell Us About Liability For Medical Artificial Intelligence?, W. Nicholson Price Ii, Sara Gerke, I. Glenn Cohen
How Much Can Potential Jurors Tell Us About Liability For Medical Artificial Intelligence?, W. Nicholson Price Ii, Sara Gerke, I. Glenn Cohen
Articles
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering medical practice, whether for risk prediction, diagnosis, or treatment recommendation. But a persistent question keeps arising: What happens when things go wrong? When patients are injured, and AI was involved, who will be liable and how? Liability is likely to influence the behavior of physicians who decide whether to follow AI advice, hospitals that implement AI tools for physician use, and developers who create those tools in the first place. If physicians are shielded from liability (typically medical malpractice liability) when they use AI tools, even if patient injury results, they are more likely …

A Serious Game For Social Engineering Awareness Creation, Fabian Muhly, Philipp Leo, Stefano Caneppele
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Social engineering is a method used by offenders to deceive their targets utilizing rationales of human psychology. Offenders aim to exploit information and use them for intelligence purposes or financial gains. Generating resilience against these malicious methods is still challenging. Literature shows that serious gaming learning approaches are used more frequently to instill lasting retention effects. Serious games are interactive, experiential learning approaches that impart knowledge about rationales and concepts in a way that fosters retention. In three samples and totally 97 participants the study at hand evaluated a social engineering serious game for participants’ involvement and instruction compliance during …

Statistical Modeling Of Hpc Performance Variability And Communication, Jered B. Dominguez-Trujillo
Statistical Modeling Of Hpc Performance Variability And Communication, Jered B. Dominguez-Trujillo
Computer Science ETDs
Understanding the performance of parallel and distributed programs remains a focal point in determining how compute systems can be optimized to achieve exascale performance. Lightweight, statistical models allow developers to both characterize and predict performance trade-offs, especially as HPC systems become more heterogeneous with many-core CPUs and GPUs. This thesis presents a lightweight, statistical modeling approach of performance variation which leverages extreme value theory by focusing on the maximum length of distributed workload intervals. This approach was implemented in MPI and evaluated on several HPC systems and workloads. I then present a performance model of partitioned communication which also uses …

An Empirical Examination Of The Computer Security Behaviors Of Telecommuters Working With Confidential Data Through Leveraging The Factors From Fear Appeals Model (Fam), Titus Dohnfon Fofung
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Computer users’ security compliance behaviors can be better understood by devising an experimental study to examine how fear appeals might impact users’ security behavior. Telecommuter security behavior has become very relevant in information systems (IS) research with the growing number of individuals working from home. The increasing dependence on telecommuting to enhance the viability and convenience has created an urgency with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic to examine the behavior of users working at home across a corporate network. The home networks are usually not as secure as those in corporate settings. There is seldom a firewall setting and …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Celiac disease (CD) is quite common and is a proximal small bowel disease that develops as a permanentintolerance to gluten and other cereal proteins in cereals. It is considered as one of the most di?icult diseases to diagnose.Histopathological evidence of small bowel biopsies taken during endoscopy remains the gold standard for diagnosis. Therefore, computer-aided detection (CAD) systems in endoscopy are a newly emerging technology to enhance thediagnostic accuracy of the disease and to save time and manpower. For this reason, a hybrid machine learning methodshave been applied for the CAD of celiac disease. Firstly, a context-based optimal multilevel thresholding technique wasemployed …
