Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire May 2021

Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The choice of academic major and, subsequently, an academic institution has a massive effect on a person’s career. It not only determines their career path but their earning potential, professional happiness, etc. [1] About 40% of people who are admitted to a college do not graduate within six years. Yet, very limited resources are available for students to help make those decisions, and each guidance counselor is responsible for roughly 400 to 900 students across the United States. A tool to help these decisions would benefit students, parents, and guidance counselors.

Various research studies have shown that personality traits affect …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is envisaged to be a large-scale, massively heterogeneous ecosystem of devices with varying purposes and capabilities. While architectures and frameworks have focused on functionality and performance, security is a critical aspect that must be integrated into system design. This work proposes a method of risk assessment of devices using both trust models and static capability profiles to determine the level of risk each device poses. By combining the concepts of trust and secure device fingerprinting, security mechanisms can be more efficiently allocated across networked IoT devices. Simultaneously, devices can be allowed a greater degree of …

Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance Apr 2021

Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance

Honors College Theses

We present SnOrE (Simple n-body Orbital Engine), a Python package which aims to simulate n-body orbital systems while simultaneously overcoming early educational barriers of computational astrodynamics for undergraduate physics students. SnOrE exploits rudimentary syntax and commonly-understood Python libraries to accurately simulate orbits of systems, given initial position and momentum conditions of each body in the system. As the n-body problem is as of yet unsolvable theoretically for n ≥ 3, having a numerical perspective on complicated orbits is of great importance to potentially understanding the processes of star and planet formation. Especially significant examples of this research …

Understanding Model Reasoning In Automated Speech Systems: Implementing A Prototype Explanation System Using The Lime Method, Vadim Kudlay Apr 2021

Understanding Model Reasoning In Automated Speech Systems: Implementing A Prototype Explanation System Using The Lime Method, Vadim Kudlay

Honors Theses

The field of voice processing has seen great advancements thanks in part to the rise of deep learning. However, the application of these deep learning techniques with an audio input space leads to an interesting result not commonly found when dealing with other input domains. Namely, common techniques for generating auditory adversarial samples using gradient-based optimization have been observed to have extremely low transferability among even the same model structure. This implies an inherent difference in the latent representations of audio samples that may be worth investigating in the pursuit of a more resilient and interpretable voice processing framework. Our …

Computer Science Student Work

Software refactoring is the process of making code changes to a program to improve its structure, design, and implementation, in such a way that it does not change the original program behavior. One example is the “rename” refactoring that changes program elements to new names that are easier to understand. Many software development tools, including Eclipse, offer various built-in refactorings such as rename, move, extract, etc. However, we discovered that over four thousand bugs related to Eclipse refactorings were reported as of January 2021. Many of these bugs get fixed after they are reported on the Eclipse bug report website …

C-Day Computing Showcase

MPEG-DASH is a video streaming standard that outlines protocols for sending audio and video content from a server to a client over HTTP. However, it creates an opportunity for an adversary to invade users' privacy. While a user is watching a video, information is leaked in the form of meta-data, the size and time that the server sent data to the user. After a fingerprint of this data is created, the adversary can use this to identify whether a target user is watching the corresponding video. Only one defense strategy has been proposed to deal with this problem: differential privacy …
