Metal-oxide semiconductors (SnO2, ZnO, TiO2, etc.) have a wide band gap (~3 eV) and are trans-parent in the visible range of the optical spectrum. Therefore, transparent semiconductor devices (diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, etc.) can be made based on them. There are two peaks in the emission spectrum of the LED. One of the peaks (3.3 eV), apparently, is as-sociated with exciton recombination, and the other peak is associated with recombination through a deep impuri-ty level. The emission spectrum of the LED was ob-served at a direct current of 40 mA. The electrolumines-cence spectrum obtained on the heterostructure at room temperature …

In this paper, multi-variety densely packed par-ticle dynamic systems with the ability to interact with the shielded Yukawa potential were studied. Also, in order to study more widely the dynamics of systems containing particles interacting via shielded potential, the theoretical foundations of the dynam-ics of systems consisting of an arbitrary number of bounded - sorted multi-particles are analyzed. The dynamics of an arbitrary number of interacting par-ticle systems on a screening potential was studied using the Bogolyubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) chain of quantum kinetic equations. The BBGKY chain of quantum kinetic equations has solutions for the case that characterizes the evo-lution of …

Surveillance cameras are everywhere keeping an eye on pedestrians or people as they navigate through the scene. Within this context, our paper addresses the problem of pedestrian attribute recognition (PAR). This problem entails the extraction of different attributes such as age-group, clothing style, accessories, footwear style etc. This is a multi-label problem with a host of challenges even for human observers. As such, the topic has rightly attracted attention recently. In this work, we integrate trainable Gabor wavelet (TGW) layers inside a convolution neural network (CNN). Whereas other researchers have used fixed Gabor filters with the CNN, the proposed layers …

Large pervasive systems, deployed in dynamic environments, require flexible control mechanisms to meet the demands of chaotic state changes while accomplishing system goals. As centralized control approaches may falter in environments where centralized communication and knowledge may be impossible to implement, researchers have proposed decentralized control methods that leverage agent-driven, self-organizing behaviors, to achieve reliable, flexible systems. This article presents and compares the performance of three decentralized control approaches in the online multi-object k-assignment problem. In this domain, a set of sensors is tasked to detect and track an unknown and changing set of targets. Results show that a …

Every decision maker’s internal scale is different based on a myriad of possible factors unique to that decision maker. Conflicting criteria within and between alternatives in multicriteria decision making can create negative effects within the weighting schemes and amplify preference biases and scale disparities between decision makers in a group decision context. Additionally, the weighting of group decision-making frameworks can intensify the already skewed criteria values. When making judgments against requirements, it may be preferable to reduce scale trend distortions between decision makers as much as possible. Previous research supports that certain information presentation modes can significantly reduce preference bias …

As reversing the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is impossible, the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is considered as the precursor of AD, has become a more tractable goal. Because both brain structural and functional alterations have been observed in MCI patients, many multimodal fusion approaches have been proposed to classify MCI from normal controls (NC) in clinical studies. Given the complex relationships between brain structure and function, deep learning-based models can be helpful in revealing potential non-linear relationships buried in multimodal neuroimaging data. Meanwhile, RNA expression microarray profile can be a complementary feature in brain diseases analysis …

Teaching Coding In A Virtual Environment: Overcoming Challenges, Marion S. Smith
Teaching Coding In A Virtual Environment: Overcoming Challenges, Marion S. Smith
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
Educational research suggests that teaching techniques are subject matter specific. Teaching techniques in introductory programming classes are centered around two approaches used by students in learning. One approach is where students develop a thorough understanding of what they are learning. This is referred to as “deep learning”. Other students use a “surface approach” where they perform the tasks required from them. The persona of the instructor and the choice of instructional materials used within a class determines which approach the student will adopt. Active teaching techniques fosters “deep learning”. With the need to adapt active teaching techniques to a virtual …

Social media datasets are fundamental to understanding a variety of phenomena, such as epidemics, adoption of behavior, crowd management, and political uprisings. At the same time, many such datasets capturing computer-mediated social interactions are recorded nowadays by individual researchers or by organizations. However, while the need for real social graphs and the supply of such datasets are well established, the flow of data from data owners to researchers is significantly hampered by privacy risks: even when humans’ identities are removed, or data is anonymized to some extent, studies have proven repeatedly that re-identifying anonymized user identities (i.e., de-anonymization) is doable …

Recognizing Patterns From Vital Signs Using Spectrograms, Sidharth Srivatsav Sribhashyam
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Spectrograms extract frequency components from a signal. Spectrograms have beenin use for a long time mainly to analyze frequency components in audio signals. Typically, these audio signals have a very high sampling rate, various frequency components and high frequency variability with time. Vital signs on other hand have very low sampling rate with no frequency variability. This work explores if spectrograms can be used to analyze and recognize patterns from vital signs signals.
As mentioned above, spectrograms deal with frequencies. More the variability of frequency, better the patterns emerge when spectrograms are applied on the signals. As vital signs lack …

Deep Peak-Shaving Transformation Planning Of Thermal Power Units Based On Approximate Dynamic Programming, Weiqing Sun, Song He, Han Dong, Kunpeng Tian
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The generation of renewable energy has great randomness. The lack of flexibility of thermal power unit leads to the problem of peak adjustment. Three reformation schemes for thermal power units, including the thermal power unit internal transformation, configurating energy storage, and joint transformation of the two are proposed. Taking into account the additional cost of thermal powerunit in the deep peak regulation, the planning model of thermal power units depth peak-shaving transformation considering the unit combination is proposed, and the strategy iteration approximate dynamic programming algorithm to decouple the model is presented. The “curses of dimensionality” can be avoided …

Approximate Method Of Spares Demand Prediction For Weibull Distribution Items Based On Piecewise Function, Songshi Shao, Zhihua Zhang, Xiaojie Mo
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Demand prediction model for spare parts with Weibull distribution involves multiple infinite series, therefore, spares demand calculation is a difficult issue. The approximate calculation method generally used is often subject to large errors. According to the principle of renewal function, the approximated demand calculation method for spares of Weibull distribution using piecewise function to approximate the renewal function is proposed. It effectively avoids the issue of computational complexity for spares demand prediction. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed approximated algorithm ensures the calculation result of spares demand is less than that of engineering approximation algorithm. According to the given …

ZooKeeper masks crash failure of servers to provide a highly available, distributed coordination kernel; however, in production, not all failures are crash failures. Bugs in underlying software systems and hardware can corrupt the ZooKeeper replicas, leading to a data loss. Since ZooKeeper is used as a ‘source of truth’ for mission-critical applications, it should handle such arbitrary faults to safeguard reliability. Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) protocols were developed to handle such faults. However, these protocols are not suitable to build practical systems as they are expensive in all important dimensions: development, deployment, complexity, and performance. ZooKeeper takes an alternative approach that …
