Actors For The Internet Of Things, Arjun Shukla
Actors For The Internet Of Things, Arjun Shukla
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The actor model is a model for concurrent computation, centered around message passing between entities in a system. It is well suited for distributed programming, due to its semantics including very little guarantees or assumptions of reliability. Actor model implementations have grown more widespread in many languages.
The library Akka (written in Scala) is one of the most popular actor libraries. However, Akka is missing some key features. Our goal is to create our own actor library called Aurum, which not only has these features but exhibits higher performance. The new features include easy ways to forge references, configure and …
Generating Test Inputs From String Constraints With An Automata-Based Solver, Marlin Roberts
Generating Test Inputs From String Constraints With An Automata-Based Solver, Marlin Roberts
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Software testing is an integral part of the software development process. To test certain parts of software, developers need to identify inputs that reach those parts. Data and control dependencies make this a non-trivial task, and as the complexity of software increases it becomes more difficult to manually derive such inputs. Due to complex data manipulations, this process is even more challenging for programs with string inputs, such as security applications. Thus, automated reachability test input generation for string data types is an important research area.
Symbolic Execution is a path-sensitive static program analysis technique that can automatically generate conditions …
Automation Of Radiation Treatment Planning For Cervical Cancer, Dong Joo Rhee
Automation Of Radiation Treatment Planning For Cervical Cancer, Dong Joo Rhee
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The mortality rate can be reduced if radiation treatment becomes widely available. However, due to the lack of radiation treatment facilities and human resources, many cervical cancer patients in Africa are not able to receive timely treatments or advanced therapies. To increase the availability of radiation treatment in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) including African countries, many attempts have been made to reduce the cost of medical linear accelerators. However, increasing the number of treatment machines would not instantly resolve the issues, as there would be …
Learning-Based Extraction Of First-Order Logic Representations Of Api Directives, Mingwei Liu, Xin Peng, Andrian Marcus, Christoph Treude, Xuefang Bai, Gang Lyu, Jiazhen Xie, Xiaoxin Zhang
Learning-Based Extraction Of First-Order Logic Representations Of Api Directives, Mingwei Liu, Xin Peng, Andrian Marcus, Christoph Treude, Xuefang Bai, Gang Lyu, Jiazhen Xie, Xiaoxin Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers often rely on API documentation to learn API directives, i.e., constraints and guidelines related to API usage. Failing to follow API directives may cause defects or improper implementations. Since there are no industry-wide standards on how to document API directives, they take many forms and are often hard to understand by developers or challenging to parse with tools. In this paper, we propose a learning based approach for extracting first-order logic representations of API directives (FOL directives for short). The approach, called LeadFOL, uses a joint learning method to extract atomic formulas by identifying the predicates and arguments involved …

Sequential multiagent decision-making under partial observability and uncertainty poses several challenges. Although multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) approaches have increased the scalability, addressing combinatorial domains is still challenging as random exploration by agents is unlikely to generate useful reward signals. We address cooperative multiagent pathfinding under uncertainty and partial observability where agents move from their respective sources to destinations while also satisfying constraints (e.g., visiting landmarks). Our main contributions include: (1) compiling domain knowledge such as underlying graph connectivity and domain constraints into propositional logic based decision diagrams, (2) developing modular techniques to integrate such knowledge with deep MARL algorithms, and …

Cfr-Mix: Solving Imperfect Information Extensive-Form Games With Combinatorial Action Space, Shuxin Li, Youzhi Zhang, Xinrun Wang, Wanqi Xue, Bo An
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In many real-world scenarios, a team of agents must coordinate with each other to compete against an opponent. The challenge of solving this type of game is that the team's joint action space grows exponentially with the number of agents, which results in the inefficiency of the existing algorithms, e.g., Counterfactual Regret Minimization (CFR). To address this problem, we propose a new framework of CFR: CFR-MIX. Firstly, we propose a new strategy representation that represents a joint action strategy using individual strategies of all agents and a consistency relationship to maintain the cooperation between agents. To compute the equilibrium with …

Malware Infections In The U.S. During The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Study, Sydney Gero, Sinchul Back, Jennifer Laprade, Joonggon Kim
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world in many ways, especially in the landscape of cyber threats. The pandemic has pro-vided cybercriminals with more opportunities to commit crimes due to more people engaging in online activities, along with the increased use of computers for school, work, and social events. The current study seeks to explore cybercrime trends, in particular malware infections, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, this study examines the relationship between the number of malware in-fections, COVID-19 positive cases, closed non-essential businesses, and closed K-12 public schools in the United States. Data utilized in this study derives from (1) …

Applying Deep Learning To The Ice Cream Vendor Problem: An Extension Of The Newsvendor Problem, Gaffar Solihu
Applying Deep Learning To The Ice Cream Vendor Problem: An Extension Of The Newsvendor Problem, Gaffar Solihu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Newsvendor problem is a classical supply chain problem used to develop strategies for inventory optimization. The goal of the newsvendor problem is to predict the optimal order quantity of a product to meet an uncertain demand in the future, given that the demand distribution itself is known. The Ice Cream Vendor Problem extends the classical newsvendor problem to an uncertain demand with unknown distribution, albeit a distribution that is known to depend on exogenous features. The goal is thus to estimate the order quantity that minimizes the total cost when demand does not follow any known statistical distribution. The …

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using optical motion capture and wearable sensors is a common way to analyze impaired movement in individuals with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. However, using optical motion sensors and wearable sensors is expensive and often requires highly trained professionals to identify specific impairments. In this work, we proposed a graph convolutional neural network that mimics the intuition of physical therapists to identify patient-specific impairments based on video of a patient. In addition, two modeling approaches are compared: a graph convolutional network applied solely on skeleton input data and a graph convolutional network accompanied with a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). Experiments …

Splash: Learnable Activation Functions For Improving Accuracy And Adversarial Robustness, Mohammadamin Tavakoli, Forest Agostinelli, Pierre Baldi
Publications
We introduce SPLASH units, a class of learnable activation functions shown to simultaneously improve the accuracy of deep neural networks while also improving their robustness to adversarial attacks. SPLASH units have both a simple parameterization and maintain the ability to approximate a wide range of non-linear functions. SPLASH units are: (1) continuous; (2) grounded (f(0)=0"); (3) use symmetric hinges; and (4) their hinges are placed at fixed locations which are derived from the data (i.e. no learning required). Compared to nine other learned and fixed activation functions, including ReLU and its variants, SPLASH units show superior performance across three datasets …
Rotten With Prediction, Serena Raquel Hicks
Rotten With Prediction, Serena Raquel Hicks
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This project focuses on the relationship between religion and technology as it is portrayed in Science Fiction (SF). This thesis explores the SF genre rhetorically by examining the 2002 movie Minority Report (MR), which signaled the importance of surveillance and the need to predict future crimes following 9/11. The events of 9/11 played a significant role in post 9/11 SF films, which reflect and critique our communal and cultural values. 9/11 created a new relationship between the U.S justice system, predictive technologies (PTs), and data gathering. Through the Bush Doctrine of “preemptive action,” the U.S government attempted to use Dataism, …
Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed
Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation we develop different methods for forecasting pedestrian trajectories. Complete understanding of pedestrian motion is essential for autonomous agents and social robots to make realistic and safe decisions. Current trajectory prediction methods rely on incorporating historic motion, scene features and social interaction to model pedestrian behaviors. Our focus is to accurately understand scene semantics to better forecast trajectories. In order to do so, we leverage semantic segmentation to encode static scene features such as walkable paths, entry/exits, static obstacles etc. We further evaluate the effectiveness of using semantic maps on different datasets and compare its performance with already …

Modeling Transitions Of Focal Entities For Conversational Knowledge Base Question Answering, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conversational KBQA is about answering a sequence of questions related to a KB. Follow-up questions in conversational KBQA often have missing information referring to entities from the conversation history. In this paper, we propose to model these implied entities, which we refer to as the focal entities of the conversation. We propose a novel graph-based model to capture the transitions of focal entities and apply a graph neural network to derive a probability distribution of focal entities for each question, which is then combined with a standard KBQA module to perform answer ranking. Our experiments on two datasets demonstrate the …

Pre-Training On Large-Scale Heterogeneous Graph, Xunqiang Jiang, Tianrui Jia, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi, Zhe Lin, Hui Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph neural networks (GNNs) emerge as the state-of-the-art representation learning methods on graphs and often rely on a large amount of labeled data to achieve satisfactory performance. Recently, in order to relieve the label scarcity issues, some works propose to pre-train GNNs in a self-supervised manner by distilling transferable knowledge from the unlabeled graph structures. Unfortunately, these pre-training frameworks mainly target at homogeneous graphs, while real interaction systems usually constitute large-scale heterogeneous graphs, containing different types of nodes and edges, which leads to new challenges on structure heterogeneity and scalability for graph pre-training. In this paper, we first study the …

Stack Overflow is one of the most popular technical Q&A sites used by software developers. Seeking help from Stack Overflow has become an essential part of software developers' daily work for solving programming-related questions. Although the Stack Overflow community has provided quality assurance guidelines to help users write better questions, we observed that a significant number of questions submitted to Stack Overflow are of low quality. In this paper, we introduce a new web-based tool, Code2Que, which can help developers in writing higher quality questions for a given code snippet. Code2Que consists of two main stages: offline learning and online …

Learning And Exploiting Shaped Reward Models For Large Scale Multiagent Rl, Arambam James Singh, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many real world systems involve interaction among large number of agents to achieve a common goal, for example, air traffic control. Several model-free RL algorithms have been proposed for such settings. A key limitation is that the empirical reward signal in model-free case is not very effective in addressing the multiagent credit assignment problem, which determines an agent's contribution to the team's success. This results in lower solution quality and high sample complexity. To address this, we contribute (a) an approach to learn a differentiable reward model for both continuous and discrete action setting by exploiting the collective nature of …

Estimating Homophily In Social Networks Using Dyadic Predictions, George Berry, Antonio Sirianni, Ingmar Weber, Jisun An, Michael Macy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Predictions of node categories are commonly used to estimate homophily and other relational properties in networks. However, little is known about the validity of using predictions for this task. We show that estimating homophily in a network is a problem of predicting categories of dyads (edges) in the graph. Homophily estimates are unbiased when predictions of dyad categories are unbiased. Node-level prediction models, such as the use of names to classify ethnicity or gender, do not generally produce unbiased predictions of dyad categories and therefore produce biased homophily estimates. Bias comes from three sources: sampling bias, correlation between model errors …

An Improved Learnable Evolution Model For Solving Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Problem With Stochastic Demand, Yunyun Niu, Detian Kong, Rong Wen, Zhiguang Cao, Jianhua Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The multi-objective vehicle routing problem with stochastic demand (MO-VRPSD) is much harder to tackle than other traditional vehicle routing problems (VRPs), due to the uncertainty in customer demands and potentially conflicted objectives. In this paper, we present an improved multi-objective learnable evolution model (IMOLEM) to solve MO-VRPSD with three objectives of travel distance, driver remuneration and number of vehicles. In our method, a machine learning algorithm, i.e., decision tree, is exploited to help find and guide the desirable direction of evolution process. To cope with the key issue of "route failure" caused due to stochastic customer demands, we propose a …

Fine-Grained Analysis Of Structured Output Prediction, Waleed Mustafa, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius And Kloft
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In machine learning we often encounter structured output prediction problems (SOPPs), i.e. problems where the output space admits a rich internal structure. Application domains where SOPPs naturally occur include natural language processing, speech recognition, and computer vision. Typical SOPPs have an extremely large label set, which grows exponentially as a function of the size of the output. Existing generalization analysis implies generalization bounds with at least a square-root dependency on the cardinality d of the label set, which can be vacuous in practice. In this paper, we significantly improve the state of the art by developing novel high-probability bounds with …

Learning From Miscellaneous Other-Class Words For Few-Shot Named Entity Recognition, Meihan Tong, Shuai Wang, Bin Xu, Yixin Cao, Minghui Liu, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Few-shot Named Entity Recognition (NER) exploits only a handful of annotations to identify and classify named entity mentions. Prototypical network shows superior performance on few-shot NER. However, existing prototypical methods fail to differentiate rich semantics in other-class words, which will aggravate overfitting under few shot scenario. To address the issue, we propose a novel model, Mining Undefined Classes from Other-class (MUCO), that can automatically induce different undefined classes from the other class to improve few-shot NER. With these extra-labeled undefined classes, our method will improve the discriminative ability of NER classifier and enhance the understanding of predefined classes with stand-by …

How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Knowledge Graph (KG) and attention mechanism have been demonstrated effective in introducing and selecting useful information for weakly supervised methods. However, only qualitative analysis and ablation study are provided as evidence. In this paper, we contribute a dataset and propose a paradigm to quantitatively evaluate the effect of attention and KG on bag-level relation extraction (RE). We find that (1) higher attention accuracy may lead to worse performance as it may harm the model’s ability to extract entity mention features; (2) the performance of attention is largely influenced by various noise distribution patterns, which is closely related to real-world datasets; …

Learning To Assign: Towards Fair Task Assignment In Large-Scale Ride Hailing, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Bingchen Song, Weifeng Lv, Qiang Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ride hailing is a widespread shared mobility application where the central issue is to assign taxi requests to drivers with various objectives. Despite extensive research on task assignment in ride hailing, the fairness of earnings among drivers is largely neglected. Pioneer studies on fair task assignment in ride hailing are ineffective and inefficient due to their myopic optimization perspective and timeconsuming assignment techniques. In this work, we propose LAF, an effective and efficient task assignment scheme that optimizes both utility and fairness. We adopt reinforcement learning to make assignments in a holistic manner and propose a set of acceleration techniques …

In this paper, we propose a new neural architecture search (NAS) problem of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) manifold networks, aiming to automate the design of SPD neural architectures. To address this problem, we first introduce a geometrically rich and diverse SPD neural architecture search space for an efficient SPD cell design. Further, we model our new NAS problem with a one-shot training process of a single supernet. Based on the supernet modeling, we exploit a differentiable NAS algorithm on our relaxed continuous search space for SPD neural architecture search. Statistical evaluation of our method on drone, action, and emotion recognition …

Leveraging Two Types Of Global Graph For Sequential Fashion Recommendation, Yujuan Ding, Yunshan Ma, Wai Keung Wong, Tat‑Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sequential fashion recommendation is of great significance in online fashion shopping, which accounts for an increasing portion of either fashion retailing or online e-commerce. The key to building an effective sequential fashion recommendation model lies in capturing two types of patterns: the personal fashion preference of users and the transitional relationships between adjacent items. The two types of patterns are usually related to user-item interaction and item-item transition modeling respectively. However, due to the large sets of users and items as well as the sparse historical interactions, it is difficult to train an effective and efficient sequential fashion recommendation model. …

In many public health settings, it is important for patients to adhere to health programs, such as taking medications and periodic health checks. Unfortunately, beneficiaries may gradually disengage from such programs, which is detrimental to their health. A concrete example of gradual disengagement has been observed by an organization that carries out a free automated call-based program for spreading preventive care information among pregnant women. Many women stop picking up calls after being enrolled for a few months. To avoid such disengagements, it is important to provide timely interventions. Such interventions are often expensive and can be provided to only …
