Employees Breaking Bad With Technology: An Exploratory Analysis Of Human Factors That Drive Cyberspace Insider Threats, Marcus L. Green
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As implementation of computer systems has continued to grow in business contexts, employee-driven cyberspace infractions have also grown in number. Employee cyberspace behaviors have continued to have detrimental effects on company computer systems. Actions that violate company cybersecurity policies can be either malicious or unmalicious. Solutions, by and large, have been electronic and centered on hardware and software. Those proposing solutions have begun to shift their focus to human risk vulnerabilities.
This study was novel in that its focus was identification of individual, cultural, and technological risk factors that drive cyberspace insider threat activities. Identifying factors that reduce insider threat …
Correct Web Service Transactions In The Presence Of Malicious And Misbehaving Transactions, John Thomas Ravan Iii
Correct Web Service Transactions In The Presence Of Malicious And Misbehaving Transactions, John Thomas Ravan Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Concurrent database transactions within a web service environment can cause a variety of problems without the proper concurrency control mechanisms in place. A few of these problems involve data integrity issues, deadlock, and efficiency issues. Even with today’s industry standard solutions to these problems, they have taken a reactive approach rather than proactively preventing these problems from happening. We deliver a solution, based on prediction-based scheduling to ensure consistency while keeping execution time the same or faster than current industry solutions. The first part of this solution involves prototyping and formally proving a prediction-based scheduler.
The prediction-based scheduler leverages a …

Multi-Modal Recommender Systems: Hands-On Exploration, Quoc Tuan Truong, Aghiles Salah, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recommender systems typically learn from user-item preference data such as ratings and clicks. This information is sparse in nature, i.e., observed user-item preferences often represent less than 5% of possible interactions. One promising direction to alleviate data sparsity is to leverage auxiliary information that may encode additional clues on how users consume items. Examples of such data (referred to as modalities) are social networks, item’s descriptive text, product images. The objective of this tutorial is to offer a comprehensive review of recent advances to represent, transform and incorporate the different modalities into recommendation models. Moreover, through practical hands-on sessions, we …

Crowdsourced Archiving Of The January 6th Us Capitol Insurrection: An R/Datahoarders Case Study, Edward Miezio Chapman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The crowdsourced archiving that occurred in the wake of the January 6th US Capitol insurrection exemplifies the potential for agile, collaborative evidence gathering during a crisis situation. This paper studies the r/DataHoarders subcommunity of Reddit and the collective and spontaneous archiving project that users initiated. Users were drawn to the thread out of a desire to contribute to law enforcement efforts, enact punitive justice upon the rioters, engage in public discourse, and preserve information for posterity. They did this by gathering and preserving social media evidence that may have otherwise been lost. I discovered that this constituted a crowdsourced archive …
Token Shift Transformer For Video Classification, Zhang Hao, Yanbin. Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Token Shift Transformer For Video Classification, Zhang Hao, Yanbin. Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Transformer achieves remarkable successes in understanding 1 and 2-dimensional signals (e.g., NLP and Image Content Understanding). As a potential alternative to convolutional neural networks, it shares merits of strong interpretability, high discriminative power on hyper-scale data, and flexibility in processing varying length inputs. However, its encoders naturally contain computational intensive operations such as pair-wise self-attention, incurring heavy computational burden when being applied on the complex 3-dimensional video signals. This paper presents Token Shift Module (i.e., TokShift), a novel, zero-parameter, zero-FLOPs operator, for modeling temporal relations within each transformer encoder. Specifically, the TokShift barely temporally shifts partial [Class] token features back-and-forth …

Explainable Retinal Screening With Self-Management Support To Improve Eye-Health Of Diabetic Population Via Telemedicine, Jannatul Ferdause Tumpa
Dissertations (1934 -)
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one major complication of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Progression of DR and complete vision loss can be prevented by keeping diabetes in control and by early diagnosis through annual eye screenings. However, cost, healthcare disparities, cultural limitations, lack of motivation, etc., are the main barriers against regular screening, especially for a few ethnically and racially minority communities. On the other hand, to well-manage and control diabetes, the diabetic population needs to be physically active and keep their weight healthy. From the perspective of Behavioral Science, Some self-management techniques based on motivational …
Towards More Trustworthy Deep Learning: Accurate, Resilient, And Explainable Countermeasures Against Adversarial Examples, Fei Zuo
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the great achievements made by neural networks on tasks such as image classification, they are brittle and vulnerable to adversarial example (AE) attacks, which are crafted by adding human-imperceptible perturbations to inputs in order that a neural-network-based classifier incorrectly labels them. Along with the prevalence of deep learning techniques, the threat of AEs attracts increasingly attentions since it may lead to serious consequences in some vital applications such as disease diagnosis.
To defeat attacks based on AEs, both detection and defensive techniques attract the research community’s attention. Given an input image, the detection system outputs whether it is an …

Condensing A Sequence To One Informative Frame For Video Recognition, Qiu. Zhaofan, Ting Yao, Yan Shu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Video is complex due to large variations in motion and rich content in fine-grained visual details. Abstracting useful information from such information-intensive media requires exhaustive computing resources. This paper studies a two-step alternative that first condenses the video sequence to an informative" frame" and then exploits off-the-shelf image recognition system on the synthetic frame. A valid question is how to define" useful information" and then distill it from a video sequence down to one synthetic frame. This paper presents a novel Informative Frame Synthesis (IFS) architecture that incorporates three objective tasks, ie, appearance reconstruction, video categorization, motion estimation, and two …

Eargate: Gait-Based User Identification With In-Ear Microphones, Andrea Ferlini, Dong Ma, Cecilia Mascolo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Human gait is a widely used biometric trait for user identification and recognition. Given the wide-spreading, steady diffusion of earworn wearables (Earables) as the new frontier of wearable devices, we investigate the feasibility of earable-based gait identification. Specifically, we look at gait-based identification from the sounds induced by walking and propagated through the musculoskeletal system in the body. Our system, EarGate, leverages an in-ear facing microphone which exploits the earable’s occlusion effect to reliably detect the user’s gait from inside the ear canal, without impairing the general usage of earphones. With data collected from 31 subjects, we show that EarGate …

Missing Data Imputation For Solar Yield Prediction Using Temporal Multi-Modal Variational Auto-Encoder, Meng Shen, Huaizheng Zhang, Yixin Cao, Fan Yang, Yonggang Wen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The accurate and robust prediction of short-term solar power generation is significant for the management of modern smart grids, where solar power has become a major energy source due to its green and economical nature. However, the solar yield prediction can be difficult to conduct in the real world where hardware and network issues can make the sensors unreachable. Such data missing problem is so prevalent that it degrades the performance of deployed prediction models and even fails the model execution. In this paper, we propose a novel temporal multi-modal variational auto-encoder (TMMVAE) model, to enhance the robustness of short-term …

Privacy-Preserving Voluntary-Tallying Leader Election For Internet Of Things, Tong Wu, Guomin Yang, Liehuang Zhu, Yulin Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Internet of Things (IoT) is commonly deployed with devices of limited power and computation capability. A centralized IoT architecture provides a simplified management for IoT system but brings redundancy by the unnecessary data traffic with a data center. A decentralized IoT reduces the cost on data traffic and is resilient to the single-point-of failure. The blockchain technique has attracted a large amount of research, which is redeemed as a perspective of decentralized IoT system infrastructure. It also brings new privacy challenges for that the blockchain is a public ledger of all digital events executed and shared among all participants. …

Expanding Temperature Sensing For The Orion Bms 2, Samuel J. Parker
Expanding Temperature Sensing For The Orion Bms 2, Samuel J. Parker
University Honors Theses
Formula SAE (FSAE) is an annual collegiate design competition that takes place across the globe. Portland State University’s team, Viking Motorsports, was committed to designing an Electric Vehicle (EV) for the 2021 FSAE competition. The team designed a completely custom lithium-ion cell battery that is managed by an Orion BMS 2 battery management system. The FSAE rulebook requires a robust temperature monitoring system for any EV power supply. The Orion BMS 2 can only directly collect data from eight temperature sensors, which is not enough to meet FSAE regulation. However, the BMS can be configured to monitor many more sensors …

Improving The Performance Of Transportation Networks: A Semi-Centralized Pricing Approach, Zhiguang Cao, Hongliang Guo, Wen Song, Kaizhou Gao, Liujiang Kang, Xuexi Zhang, Qilun Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Improving the performance of transportation network is a crucial task in traffic management. In this paper, we start with a cooperative routing problem, which aims to minimize the chance of road network breakdown. To address this problem, we propose a subgradient method, which can be naturally implemented as a semi-centralized pricing approach. Particularly, each road link adopts the pricing scheme to calculate and adjust the local toll regularly, while the vehicles update their routes to minimize the toll costs by exploiting the global toll information. To prevent the potential oscillation brought by the subgradient method, we introduce a heavy-ball method …
Causal Attention For Unbiased Visual Recognition, Tan Wang, Chang Zhou, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Causal Attention For Unbiased Visual Recognition, Tan Wang, Chang Zhou, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Attention module does not always help deep models learn causal features that are robust in any confounding context, e.g., a foreground object feature is invariant to different backgrounds. This is because the confounders trick the attention to capture spurious correlations that benefit the prediction when the training and testing data are IID (identical & independent distribution); while harm the prediction when the data are OOD (out-of-distribution). The sole fundamental solution to learn causal attention is by causal intervention, which requires additional annotations of the confounders, e.g., a “dog” model is learned within “grass+dog” and “road+dog” respectively, so the “grass” and …

Sustainable Maritime Crude Oil Transportation: A Split Pickup And Split Delivery Problem With Time Windows, Hiba Yahyaoui, Nadia Dahmani, Saoussen Krichen
All Works
This paper studies a novel sustainable vessel routing problem modeling considering the multi-compartment, split pickup and split delivery, and time windows concepts. In the presented problem, oil tankers transport crude oil from supply ports to demand ports around the globe. The objective is to find ship routes, as well as port arrival and departure times, in a way that minimizes transportation costs. As a second objective, we considered the sustainability aspect by minimizing the vessel energy efficiency operational indicator. Multiple products are transported by a heterogeneous fleet of tankers. Small realistic test instances are solved with the exact method.
The Role Of Public And Private Sectors: How To Promote National Cybersecurity Strategies And Critical Infrastructure Protection In Southeastern Europe, Larry Cruz
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper seeks to address the important role of public and private interests in protecting critical infrastructure in Southeastern Europe, providing examples from Serbia. While the public sector does have a role in protecting critical infrastructure needs, it is the private sector which holds major oversight of the critical infrastructures of the region, therefore having an important role in maintaining their functionality and protection. The literature in this field argues for more collaboration and information sharing between the public and private sectors of the region, though the task is not as simple as it appears given the varying aspirations of …
