Predicting Anti-Asian Hateful Users On Twitter During Covid-19, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Claire Seungeun Lee, Bogang Jun, Yong-Yeol Ahn
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate predictors of anti-Asian hate among Twitter users throughout COVID-19. With the rise of xenophobia and polarization that has accompanied widespread social media usage in many nations, online hate has become a major social issue, attracting many researchers. Here, we apply natural language processing techniques to characterize social media users who began to post anti-Asian hate messages during COVID-19. We compare two user groups—those who posted anti-Asian slurs and those who did not—with respect to a rich set of features measured with data prior to COVID-19 and show that it is possible to predict who later publicly posted anti-Asian …

Expediting The Accuracy-Improving Process Of Svms For Class Imbalance Learning, Bin Cao, Yuqi Liu, Chenyu Hou, Jing Fan, Baihua Zheng, Jianwei Jin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To improve the classification performance of support vector machines (SVMs) on imbalanced datasets, cost-sensitive learning methods have been proposed, e.g., DEC (Different Error Costs) and FSVM-CIL (Fuzzy SVM for Class Imbalance Learning). They relocate the hyperplane by adjusting the costs associated with misclassifying samples. However, the error costs are determined either empirically or by performing an exhaustive search in the parameter space. Both strategies can not guarantee effectiveness and efficiency simultaneously. In this paper, we propose ATEC, a solution that can efficiently find a preferable hyperplane by automatically tuning the error cost for between-class samples. ATEC distinguishes itself from all …
Nudging Students To Use Stronger Passwords: A Test Of Big Five Personality-Based Messages, Shelia Kennison, Eric Chan-Tin
Nudging Students To Use Stronger Passwords: A Test Of Big Five Personality-Based Messages, Shelia Kennison, Eric Chan-Tin
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Cybersecurity breaches can occur when one uses an easily hacked password. Prior research has investigated 1) possible steps to encourage users to use strong passwords and 2) how personality is related to users using strong passwords.
We investigated whether personality-based nudging messages based on Big Five traits could nudge people to create stronger passwords (c.f., Jones et al., 2021). We also examined how personal characteristics, such as gender, age, personality traits, password knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, and need for cognition, were related to password strength.
We tested the hypothesis that passwords created following messages matching participants’ personality would be stronger …

Tweets R Us: Predicting Personality From Language And Emoji Use On Twitter, Maxwell Meckling, Sarah Shoup, D. E. Chan-Tin, Shelia Kennison
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The research investigated the suggestion from prior research that language and emojis use on Twitter and other social media platforms can predict users’ personality and gender (Adali et al., 2014; Golbeck et al., 2011; Li et al., 2019; Moreno et al., 2019; Raess, 2018). Some studies have also analyzed Twitter language to identify individuals with specific health conditions (e.g., alcohol recovery, Golbeck, 2012; sleep problems, Suarez et al., 2018).
If strategies to predict Twitter users’ characteristics prove to be successful, future efforts to direct persuasive messages related to recommended practices in public health and/or cybersecurity will be possible. Commercial applications …

Acoustic/Gravity Wave Phenomena In Wide-Field Imaging: From Data Analysis To A Modeling Framework For Observability In The Mlt Region And Beyond, Jaime Aguilar Guerrero
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Acoustic waves, gravity waves, and larger-scale tidal and planetary waves are significant drivers of the atmosphere’s dynamics and of the local and global circulation that have direct and indirect impacts on our weather and climate. Their measurements and characterization are fundamental challenges in Aeronomy that require a wide range of instrumentation with distinct operational principles. Most measurements share the common features of integrating optical emissions or effects on radio waves through deep layers of the atmosphere. The geometry of these integrations create line-of-sight effects that must be understood, described, and accounted for to properly present the measured data in traditional …

In this demo, we present an online multi-modal community query engine (MQE1 ) on Alibaba’s billion-scale heterogeneous network. MQE has two distinct features in comparison with existing community query engines. Firstly, MQE supports multimodal community search on heterogeneous graphs with keyword and image queries. Secondly, to facilitate community understanding in real business scenarios, MQE generates natural language descriptions for the retrieved community in combination with other useful demographic information. The distinct features of MQE benefit many downstream applications in Alibaba’s e-commerce platform like recommendation. Our experiments confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of MQE on graphs with billions of edges.
Pruning Meta-Trained Networks For On-Device Adaptation, Dawei Gao, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lothar Thiele
Pruning Meta-Trained Networks For On-Device Adaptation, Dawei Gao, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lothar Thiele
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adapting neural networks to unseen tasks with few training samples on resource-constrained devices benefits various Internet-of-Things applications. Such neural networks should learn the new tasks in few shots and be compact in size. Meta-learning enables few-shot learning, yet the meta-trained networks can be overparameterised. However, naive combination of standard compression techniques like network pruning with meta-learning jeopardises the ability for fast adaptation. In this work, we propose adaptation-aware network pruning (ANP), a novel pruning scheme that works with existing meta-learning methods for a compact network capable of fast adaptation. ANP uses weight importance metric that is based on the sensitivity …
Artificial Intelligence As Augmenting Automation: Implications For Employment, F. Ted Tschang, Esteve Almirall
Artificial Intelligence As Augmenting Automation: Implications For Employment, F. Ted Tschang, Esteve Almirall
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
There has been great concern in recent years that artificial intelligence (AI) may cause widespread unemployment, but proponents say that AI augments existing jobs. Both of these positions have substance, but there is a need is to articulate the mechanisms by which AI may actually do both, and in the process, transform work and business organizations alike. We use economic studies showing past transformations automation wrought on the structure of employment and skills (such as the favouring of nonroutine skills) to articulate a ground for discussion. We then use case evidence of AI and automation to show how AI is …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-hop reasoning has been widely studied in recent years to obtain more interpretable link prediction. However, we find in experiments that many paths given by these models are actually unreasonable, while little work has been done on interpretability evaluation for them. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to quantitatively evaluate the interpretability of multi-hop reasoning models so as to advance their development. In specific, we define three metrics, including path recall, local interpretability, and global interpretability for evaluation, and design an approximate strategy to calculate these metrics using the interpretability scores of rules. We manually annotate all possible …
On Aggregating Salaries Of Occupations From Job Post And Review Data, Chih-Chieh Hung, Ee-Peng Lim
On Aggregating Salaries Of Occupations From Job Post And Review Data, Chih-Chieh Hung, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The popularity of job websites has significantly changed the way people learn about different occupations. Among the insights offered by these websites are the statistics of occupation salaries which are useful information for job seekers, career coaches, graduating students, and labor related government agencies. Such statistics include the distribution of job salaries of each occupation, such as average or quantiles. However, significant variability in salary (and review salary) can be found among jobs of the same occupation as we gather job post and review data from job websites. Such variability shows the existence of biases, including salary competitiveness in job …

Learning Knowledge-Enriched Company Embeddings For Investment Management, Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Relationships between companies serve as key channels through which the effects of past stock price movements and news events propagate and influence future price movements. Such relationships can be implicitly found in knowledge bases or explicitly represented as knowledge graphs. In this paper, we propose KnowledgeEnriched Company Embedding (KECE), a novel multi-stage attentionbased dynamic network embedding model combining multimodal information of companies with knowledge from Wikipedia and knowledge graph relationships from Wikidata to generate company entity embeddings that can be applied to a variety of downstream investment management tasks. Experiments on an extensive set of real-world stock prices and news …

Adaptive Posterior Knowledge Selection For Improving Knowledge-Grounded Dialogue Generation, Weichao Wang, Wei Gao, Shi Feng, Ling Chen, Daling Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In open-domain dialogue systems, knowledge information such as unstructured persona profiles, text descriptions and structured knowledge graph can help incorporate abundant background facts for delivering more engaging and informative responses. Existing studies attempted to model a general posterior distribution over candidate knowledge by considering the entire response utterance as a whole at the beginning of decoding process for knowledge selection. However, a single smooth distribution could fail to model the variability of knowledge selection patterns over different decoding steps, and make the knowledge expression less consistent. To remedy this issue, we propose an adaptive posterior knowledge selection framework, which sequentially …

Span-Level Emotion Cause Analysis With Neural Sequence Tagging, Xiangju Li, Wei Gao, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Shafiq Joty
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper addresses the task of span-level emotion cause analysis (SECA). It is a finer-grained emotion cause analysis (ECA) task, which aims to identify the specific emotion cause span(s) behind certain emotions in text. In this paper, we formalize SECA as a sequence tagging task for which several variants of neural network-based sequence tagging models to extract specific emotion cause span(s) in the given context. These models combine different types of encoding and decoding approaches. Furthermore, to make our models more "emotionally sensitive'', we utilize the multi-head attention mechanism to enhance the representation of context. Experimental evaluations conducted on two …

Topic-Aware Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network For Link Prediction, Siyong Xu, Cheng Yang, Yuan Fang, Yuan Fang, Yang Tianchi, Luhao Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Heterogeneous graphs (HGs), consisting of multiple types of nodes and links, can characterize a variety of real-world complex systems. Recently, heterogeneous graph neural networks (HGNNs), as a powerful graph embedding method to aggregate heterogeneous structure and attribute information, has earned a lot of attention. Despite the ability of HGNNs in capturing rich semantics which reveal different aspects of nodes, they still stay at a coarse-grained level which simply exploits structural characteristics. In fact, rich unstructured text content of nodes also carries latent but more fine-grained semantics arising from multi-facet topic-aware factors, which fundamentally manifest why nodes of different types would …

Automating Developer Chat Mining, Shengyi Pan, Lingfeng Bao, Xiaoxue Ren, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online chatrooms are gaining popularity as a communication channel between widely distributed developers of Open Source Software (OSS) projects. Most discussion threads in chatrooms follow a Q&A format, with some developers (askers) raising an initial question and others (respondents) joining in to provide answers. These discussion threads are embedded with rich information that can satisfy the diverse needs of various OSS stakeholders. However, retrieving information from threads is challenging as it requires a thread-level analysis to understand the context. Moreover, the chat data is transient and unstructured, consisting of entangled informal conversations. In this paper, we address this challenge by …
Automating User Notice Generation For Smart Contract Functions, Xing Hu, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, Xiaohu Yang
Automating User Notice Generation For Smart Contract Functions, Xing Hu, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, Xiaohu Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Smart contracts have obtained much attention and are crucial for automatic financial and business transactions. For end-users who have never seen the source code, they can read the user notice shown in end-user client to understand what a transaction does of a smart contract function. However, due to time constraints or lack of motivation, user notice is often missing during the development of smart contracts. For endusers who lack the information of the user notices, there is no easy way for them to check the code semantics of the smart contracts. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new approach …

Contrastive Pre-Training Of Gnns On Heterogeneous Graphs, Xunqiang Jiang, Yuanfu Lu, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While graph neural networks (GNNs) emerge as the state-of-the-art representation learning methods on graphs, they often require a large amount of labeled data to achieve satisfactory performance, which is often expensive or unavailable. To relieve the label scarcity issue, some pre-training strategies have been devised for GNNs, to learn transferable knowledge from the universal structural properties of the graph. However, existing pre-training strategies are only designed for homogeneous graphs, in which each node and edge belongs to the same type. In contrast, a heterogeneous graph embodies rich semantics, as multiple types of nodes interact with each other via different kinds …

Sofi: Reflection-Augmented Fuzzing For Javascript Engines, Xiaoyu He, Xiaofei Xie, Yuekang Li, Jianwen Sun, Feng Li, Wei Zou, Yang Liu, Lei Yu, Jianhua Zhou, Wenchang Shi, Wei Huo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
JavaScript engines have been shown prone to security vulnerabilities, which can lead to serious consequences due to their popularity. Fuzzing is an effective testing technique to discover vulnerabilities. The main challenge of fuzzing JavaScript engines is to generate syntactically and semantically valid inputs such that deep functionalities can be explored. However, due to the dynamic nature of JavaScript and the special features of different engines, it is quite challenging to generate semantically meaningful test inputs. We observed that state-of-the-art semantic-aware JavaScript fuzzers usually require manually written rules to analyze the semantics for a JavaScript engine, which is labor-intensive, incomplete and engine-specific. …

Protein Deep Profile And Model Predictions For Identifying The Causal Genes Of Male Infertility Based On Deep Learning, Fang Xu, Ganggang Guo, Feida Zhu, Xiaojun Tan, Liqing Fan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A principal task in dissecting the genetics of complex traits is to identify causal genes for disease phenotypes. Millions of genes have been sequenced in data-driven genomics era, but their causal relationships with disease phenotypes remain limited, due to the difficulty of elucidating underlying causal genes by laboratory-based strategies. Here, we proposed an innovative deep learning computational modeling alternative (DPPCG framework) for identifying causal (coding) genes for a specific disease phenotype. In terms of male infertility, we introduced proteins as intermediate cell variables, leveraging integrated deep knowledge representations (Word2vec, ProtVec, Node2vec, and Space2vec) quantitatively represented as ‘protein deep profiles’. We …

Patchnet: Hierarchical Deep Learning-Based Stable Patch Identification For The Linux Kernel, Thong Hoang, Julia Lawall, Yuan Tian, Richard J. Oentaryo, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Linux kernel stable versions serve the needs of users who value stability of the kernel over new features. The quality of such stable versions depends on the initiative of kernel developers and maintainers to propagate bug fixing patches to the stable versions. Thus, it is desirable to consider to what extent this process can be automated. A previous approach relies on words from commit messages and a small set of manually constructed code features. This approach, however, shows only moderate accuracy. In this paper, we investigate whether deep learning can provide a more accurate solution. We propose PatchNet, a hierarchical …

Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis In Question Answering Forums, Wenxuan Zhang, Yang Deng, Xin Li, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) typically focuses on extracting aspects and predicting their sentiments on individual sentences such as customer reviews. Recently, another kind of opinion sharing platform, namely question answering (QA) forum, has received increasing popularity, which accumulates a large number of user opinions towards various aspects. This motivates us to investigate the task of ABSA on QA forums (ABSA-QA), aiming to jointly detect the discussed aspects and their sentiment polarities for a given QA pair. Unlike review sentences, a QA pair is composed of two parallel sentences, which requires interaction modeling to align the aspect mentioned in the question …

Aspect Sentiment Quad Prediction As Paraphrase Generation, Wenxuan Zhang, Yang Deng, Xin Li, Yifei Yuan, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has been extensively studied in recent years, which typically involves four fundamental sentiment elements, including the aspect category, aspect term, opinion term, and sentiment polarity. Existing studies usually consider the detection of partial sentiment elements, instead of predicting the four elements in one shot. In this work, we introduce the Aspect Sentiment Quad Prediction (ASQP) task, aiming to jointly detect all sentiment elements in quads for a given opinionated sentence, which can reveal a more comprehensive and complete aspect-level sentiment structure. We further propose a novel Paraphrase modeling paradigm to cast the ASQP task to a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This technology offer is a quantum machine learning algorithm applied to binary classification models for noisy datasets which are prevalent in financial and other datasets. By combining hybrid-neural networks, quantum parametric circuits, and data re-uploading we have improved the classification of non-convex 2-dimensional figures by understanding learning stability as noise increases in the dataset. The metric we use for assessing the performance of our quantum classifiers is the area under the receiver operator curve (ROC AUC). We are interested to collaborate with partners with use cases for binary classification of noisy data. Also, as quantum technology is still insufficient for …

Does Active Service Intervention Drive More Complaints On Social Media? The Roles Of Service Quality And Awareness, Shujing Sun, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite many advantages of social media as a customer service channel, there is a concern that active service intervention encourages excessive service complaints. Our paper casts doubt on this misconception by examining the dynamics between social media customer complaints and brand service interventions. We find service interventions indeed cause more complaints, yet this increase is driven by service awareness rather than chronic complaining. Due to the publicity and connectivity of social media, customers learn about the new service channel by observing customer service delivery to others – a mechanism that is unique to social media customer service and does not …

We describe the practical development of a smart lighting control system, CS-Light, that uses a preexisting surveillance camera infrastructure as the sole sensing substrate. At a high level, the camera feeds are used to both (a) estimate the illuminance of individual, fine-grained (roughly 12m2) sub-regions, and (b) identify sub-regions that have non-transient human occupancy. Subsequently, these estimates are used to perform fine-grained (non-binary) power optimization of a set of LED luminaires, collectively minimizing energy consumption while assuring comfort to human occupants. The key to our approach is the ability to tackle the challenging problem of translating the luminance (pixel intensity) …
Representation Learning On Multi-Layered Heterogeneous Network, Delvin Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Representation Learning On Multi-Layered Heterogeneous Network, Delvin Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network data can often be represented in a multi-layered structure with rich semantics. One example is e-commerce data, containing user-user social network layer and item-item context layer, with cross-layer user-item interactions. Given the dual characters of homogeneity within each layer and heterogeneity across layers, we seek to learn node representations from such a multi-layered heterogeneous network while jointly preserving structural information and network semantics. In contrast, previous works on network embedding mainly focus on single-layered or homogeneous networks with one type of nodes and links. In this paper we propose intra- and cross-layer proximity concepts. Intra-layer proximity simulates propagation along …
An Economic Analysis Of Rebates Conditional On Positive Reviews, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo, Jian Huang
An Economic Analysis Of Rebates Conditional On Positive Reviews, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo, Jian Huang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Strategic sellers on some online selling platforms have recently been using a conditional-rebate strategy to manipulate product reviews under which only purchasing consumers who post positive reviews online are eligible to redeem the rebate. A key concern for the conditional rebate is that it can easily induce fake reviews, which might be harmful to consumers and society. We develop a microbehavioral model capturing consumers’ review-sharing benefit, review-posting cost, and moral cost of lying to examine the seller’s optimal pricing and rebate decisions. We derive three equilibria: the no-rebate, organic-review equilibrium; the low-rebate, boosted-authentic-review equilibrium; and the high-rebate, partially-fake-review equilibrium. We …

Span-Level Emotion Cause Analysis By Bert-Based Graph Attention Network, Xiangju Li, Wei Gao, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Shafiq Joty
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the task of span-level emotion cause analysis (SECA), which is focused on identifying the specific emotion cause span(s) triggering a certain emotion in the text. Compared to the popular clause-level emotion cause analysis (CECA), it is a finer-grained emotion cause analysis (ECA) task. In this paper, we design a BERT-based graph attention network for emotion cause span(s) identification. The proposed model takes advantage of the structure of BERT to capture the relationship information between emotion and text, and utilizes graph attention network to model the structure information of the text. Our SECA method can be easily used for …

Fleet Sizing And Allocation For On-Demand Last-Mile Transportation Systems, Karmel Shehadeh, Hai Wang, Peter Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The last-mile problem refers to the provision of travel service from the nearest public transportation node to home or other destination. Last-Mile Transportation Systems (LMTS), which have recently emerged, provide on-demand shared transportation. In this paper, we investigate the fleet sizing and allocation problem for the on-demand LMTS. Specifically, we consider the perspective of a last-mile service provider who wants to determine the number of servicing vehicles to allocate to multiple last-mile service regions in a particular city. In each service region, passengers demanding last-mile services arrive in batches, and allocated vehicles deliver passengers to their final destinations. The passenger …
