Qvip: An Ilp-Based Formal Verification Approach For Quantized Neural Networks, Yedi Zhang, Zhe Zhao, Guangke Chen, Fu Song, Min Zhang, Taolue Chen, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep learning has become a promising programming paradigm in software development, owing to its surprising performance in solving many challenging tasks. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly being deployed in practice, but are limited on resource-constrained devices owing to their demand for computational power. Quantization has emerged as a promising technique to reduce the size of DNNs with comparable accuracy as their floating-point numbered counterparts. The resulting quantized neural networks (QNNs) can be implemented energy-efficiently. Similar to their floating-point numbered counterparts, quality assurance techniques for QNNs, such as testing and formal verification, are essential but are currently less explored. In …

Guaranteeing Timed Opacity Using Parametric Timed Model Checking, Étienne André, Didier Lime, Dylan Marinho, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information leakage can have dramatic consequences on systems security. Among harmful information leaks, the timing information leakage occurs whenever an attacker successfully deduces confidential internal information. In this work, we consider that the attacker has access (only) to the system execution time. We address the following timed opacity problem: given a timed system, a private location and a final location, synthesize the execution times from the initial location to the final location for which one cannot deduce whether the system went through the private location. We also consider the full timed opacity problem, asking whether the system is opaque for …

Self-supervised entity alignment (EA) aims to link equivalent entities across different knowledge graphs (KGs) without the use of pre-aligned entity pairs. The current state-of-the-art (SOTA) selfsupervised EA approach draws inspiration from contrastive learning, originally designed in computer vision based on instance discrimination and contrastive loss, and suffers from two shortcomings. Firstly, it puts unidirectional emphasis on pushing sampled negative entities far away rather than pulling positively aligned pairs close, as is done in the well-established supervised EA. Secondly, it advocates the minimum information requirement for self-supervised EA, while we argue that self-described KG’s side information (e.g., entity name, relation name, …

Ergo: Event Relational Graph Transformer For Document-Level Event Causality Identification, Meiqi Chen, Yixin Cao, Kunquan Deng, Mukai Li, Kun Wang, Jing Shao, Yan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level Event Causality Identification (DECI) aims to identify event-event causal relations in a document. Existing works usually build an event graph for global reasoning across multiple sentences. However, the edges between events have to be carefully designed through heuristic rules or external tools. In this paper, we propose a novel Event Relational Graph TransfOrmer (ERGO) framework1 for DECI, to ease the graph construction and improve it over the noisy edge issue. Different from conventional event graphs, we define a pair of events as a node and build a complete event relational graph without any prior knowledge or tools. This naturally …

Wave-Vit: Unifying Wavelet And Transformers For Visual Representation Learning, Ting Yao, Yingwei Pan, Yehao Li, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei Oct 2022

Wave-Vit: Unifying Wavelet And Transformers For Visual Representation Learning, Ting Yao, Yingwei Pan, Yehao Li, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tao Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-scale Vision Transformer (ViT) has emerged as a powerful backbone for computer vision tasks, while the self-attention computation in Transformer scales quadratically w.r.t. the input patch number. Thus, existing solutions commonly employ down-sampling operations (e.g., average pooling) over keys/values to dramatically reduce the computational cost. In this work, we argue that such over-aggressive down-sampling design is not invertible and inevitably causes information dropping especially for high-frequency components in objects (e.g., texture details). Motivated by the wavelet theory, we construct a new Wavelet Vision Transformer (Wave-ViT) that formulates the invertible down-sampling with wavelet transforms and self-attention learning in a unified way. …

Transrepair: Context-Aware Program Repair For Compilation Errors, Xueyang Li, Shangqing Liu, Ruitao Feng, Guozhu Meng, Xiaofei Xie, Kai Chen, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatically fixing compilation errors can greatly raise the productivity of software development, by guiding the novice or AI programmers to write and debug code. Recently, learning-based program repair has gained extensive attention and became the state of-the-art in practice. But it still leaves plenty of space for improvement. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end solution TransRepair to locate the error lines and create the correct substitute for a C program simultaneously. Superior to the counterpart, our approach takes into account the context of erroneous code and diagnostic compilation feedback. Then we devise a Transformer-based neural network to learn the …

Answer Summarization For Technical Queries: Benchmark And New Approach, Chengran Yang, Bowen Xu, Ferdian Thung, Yucen Shi, Ting Zhang, Zhou Yang, Xin Zhou, Jieke Shi, Junda He, Donggyun Han, David Lo Oct 2022

Answer Summarization For Technical Queries: Benchmark And New Approach, Chengran Yang, Bowen Xu, Ferdian Thung, Yucen Shi, Ting Zhang, Zhou Yang, Xin Zhou, Jieke Shi, Junda He, Donggyun Han, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prior studies have demonstrated that approaches to generate an answer summary for a given technical query in Software Question and Answer (SQA) sites are desired. We find that existing approaches are assessed solely through user studies. Hence, a new user study needs to be performed every time a new approach is introduced; this is time-consuming, slows down the development of the new approach, and results from different user studies may not be comparable to each other. There is a need for a benchmark with ground truth summaries as a complement assessment through user studies. Unfortunately, such a benchmark is non-existent …

Compressing Pre-Trained Models Of Code Into 3 Mb, Jieke Shi, Zhou Yang, Bowen Xu, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo Oct 2022

Compressing Pre-Trained Models Of Code Into 3 Mb, Jieke Shi, Zhou Yang, Bowen Xu, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although large pre-trained models of code have delivered significant advancements in various code processing tasks, there is an impediment to the wide and fluent adoption of these powerful models in software developers’ daily workflow: these large models consume hundreds of megabytes of memory and run slowly on personal devices, which causes problems in model deployment and greatly degrades the user experience. It motivates us to propose Compressor, a novel approach that can compress the pre-trained models of code into extremely small models with negligible performance sacrifice. Our proposed method formulates the design of tiny models as simplifying the pre-trained model …

Transplantfix: Graph Differencing-Based Code Transplantation For Automated Program Repair, Deheng Yang, Xiaoguang Mao, Liqian Chen, Xuezheng Xu, Yan Lei, David Lo, Jiayu He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated program repair (APR) holds the promise of aiding manual debugging activities. Over a decade of evolution, a broad range of APR techniques have been proposed and evaluated on a set of real-world bug datasets. However, while more and more bugs have been correctly fixed, we observe that the growth of newly fixed bugs by APR techniques has hit a bottleneck in recent years. In this work, we explore the possibility of addressing complicated bugs by proposing TransplantFix, a novel APR technique that leverages graph differencing-based transplantation from the donor method. The key novelty of TransplantFix lies in three aspects: …

On Mitigating Hard Clusters For Face Clustering, Yingjie Chen, Huasong Zhong, Chong Chen, Chen Shen, Jianqiang Huang, Tao Wang, Yun Liang, Qianru Sun Oct 2022

On Mitigating Hard Clusters For Face Clustering, Yingjie Chen, Huasong Zhong, Chong Chen, Chen Shen, Jianqiang Huang, Tao Wang, Yun Liang, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Face clustering is a promising way to scale up face recognition systems using large-scale unlabeled face images. It remains challenging to identify small or sparse face image clusters that we call hard clusters, which is caused by the heterogeneity, i.e., high variations in size and sparsity, of the clusters. Consequently, the conventional way of using a uniform threshold (to identify clusters) often leads to a terrible misclassification for the samples that should belong to hard clusters. We tackle this problem by leveraging the neighborhood information of samples and inferring the cluster memberships (of samples) in a probabilistic way. We introduce …

Ngram-Oaxe: Phrase-Based Order-Agnostic Cross Entropy For Non-Autoregressive Machine Translation, Cunxiao Du, Zhaopeng Tu, Longyue Wang, Jing Jiang Oct 2022

Ngram-Oaxe: Phrase-Based Order-Agnostic Cross Entropy For Non-Autoregressive Machine Translation, Cunxiao Du, Zhaopeng Tu, Longyue Wang, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, a new training oaxe loss has proven effective to ameliorate the effect of multimodality for non-autoregressive translation (NAT), which removes the penalty of word order errors in the standard cross-entropy loss. Starting from the intuition that reordering generally occurs between phrases, we extend oaxe by only allowing reordering between ngram phrases and still requiring a strict match of word order within the phrases. Extensive experiments on NAT benchmarks across language pairs and data scales demonstrate the effectiveness and universality of our approach. Further analyses show that ngram noaxe indeed improves the translation of ngram phrases, and produces more fluent …

Pruning The Communication Bandwidth Between Reinforcement Learning Agents Through Causal Inference: An Innovative Approach To Designing A Smart Grid Power System, Xianjie Zhang, Yu Liu, Wenjun Li, Chen Gong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Electricity demands are increasing significantly and the traditional power grid system isfacing huge challenges. As the desired next-generation power grid system, smart grid can providesecure and reliable power generation, and consumption, and can also realize the system’s coordinatedand intelligent power distribution. Coordinating grid power distribution usually requiresmutual communication between power distributors to accomplish coordination. However, the powernetwork is complex, the network nodes are far apart, and the communication bandwidth is oftenexpensive. Therefore, how to reduce the communication bandwidth in the cooperative power distributionprocess task is crucially important. One way to tackle this problem is to build mechanismsto selectively send out …

Towards Understanding The Faults Of Javascript-Based Deep Learning Systems, Lili Quan, Qianyu Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Sen Chen, Xiaohong Li, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quality assurance is of great importance for deep learning (DL) systems, especially when they are applied in safety-critical applications. While quality issues of native DL applications have been extensively analyzed, the issues of JavaScript-based DL applications have never been systematically studied. Compared with native DL applications, JavaScript-based DL applications can run on major browsers, making the platform- and device-independent. Specifically, the quality of JavaScript-based DL applications depends on the 3 parts: the application, the third-party DL library used and the underlying DL framework (e.g., TensorFlow.js), called JavaScript-based DL system. In this paper, we conduct the first empirical study on the …

Generic Conversions From Cpa To Cca Without Ciphertext Expansion For Threshold Abe With Constant-Size Ciphertexts, J Lai, F Guo, W Susilo, P Jiang, Guomin Yang, X. Huang Oct 2022

Generic Conversions From Cpa To Cca Without Ciphertext Expansion For Threshold Abe With Constant-Size Ciphertexts, J Lai, F Guo, W Susilo, P Jiang, Guomin Yang, X. Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

CCA security is desirable when designing encryption schemes because it captures active attackers. One efficient approach for achieving CCA security is to use generic conversions. We first design a CPA secure scheme, and then transform it into a CCA secure scheme using the Fujisaki-Okamoto technique (CRYPTO ’99) in the random oracle model or the Canetti-Halevi-Katz technique (EUROCRYPT ’04) in the standard model if the CPA secure scheme satisfies some conditions. These transformations are generic so they can be applied to encryption primitives such as IBE and ABE. Nevertheless, both techniques result in an inevitable ciphertext expansion. Subsequent generic constructions mainly …

Today, Linux users use sudo/su commands to attribute Linux’s administrative privileges to their programs. These commands always give the whole list of administrative privileges to Linux programs, unless there are pre-installed default policies defined by Linux Security Modules(LSM). LSM modules require users to inject the needed privileges into the memory of the process and to declare the needed privileges in an LSM policy. This approach can work for users who have good knowledge of the syntax of LSM modules’ policies. Adding or editing an existing policy is a very time-consuming process because LSM modules require adding a complete list of …

Problematic Internet Usage: The Impact Of Objectively Recorded And Categorized Usage Time, Emotional Intelligence Components And Subjective Happiness About Usage, Sameha Alshakhsi, Khansa Chemnad, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Majid Altuwairiqi, John Mcalaney, Raian Ali Oct 2022

Problematic Internet Usage: The Impact Of Objectively Recorded And Categorized Usage Time, Emotional Intelligence Components And Subjective Happiness About Usage, Sameha Alshakhsi, Khansa Chemnad, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Majid Altuwairiqi, John Mcalaney, Raian Ali

All Works

Most research on Problematic Internet Usage (PIU) relied on self-report data when measuring the time spent on the internet. Self-reporting of use, typically done through a survey, showed discrepancies from the actual amount of use. Studies exploring the association between trait emotional intelligence (EI) components and the subjective feeling on technology usage and PIU are also limited. The current cross-sectional study aims to examine whether the objectively recorded technology usage, taking smartphone usage as a representative, components of trait EI (sociability, emotionality, well-being, self-control), and happiness with phone use can predict PIU and its components (obsession, neglect, and control disorder). …

Cnn-Based Dendrite Core Detection From Microscopic Images Of Directionally Solidified Ni-Base Alloys, Xiaoguang Li Oct 2022

Cnn-Based Dendrite Core Detection From Microscopic Images Of Directionally Solidified Ni-Base Alloys, Xiaoguang Li

Theses and Dissertations

Dendrite core is the center point of the dendrite. The information of dendrite core is very helpful for material scientists to analyze the properties of materials. Therefore, detecting the dendrite core is a very important task in the material science field. Meanwhile, because of some special properties of the dendrites, this task is also very challenging. Different from the typical detection problems in the computer vision field, detecting the dendrite core aims to detect a single point location instead of the bounding-box. As a result, the existing regressing bounding-box based detection methods can not work well on this task because …

Conversational Agents (CAs) powered with deep language models (DLMs) have shown tremendous promise in the domain of mental health. Prominently, the CAs have been used to provide informational or therapeutic services (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) to patients. However, the utility of CAs to assist in mental health triaging has not been explored in the existing work as it requires a controlled generation of follow-up questions (FQs), which are often initiated and guided by the mental health professionals (MHPs) in clinical settings. In the context of `depression', our experiments show that DLMs coupled with process knowledge in a mental health questionnaire …

The goal of this research is to generate cybersecurity requirements based on knowledge acquired from requirements elicitation and analysis activities, to provide cybersecurity specifications without requiring the specialized knowledge of a cybersecurity expert, and …

Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao Oct 2022

Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recently, contrastive learning has been applied to the sequential recommendation task to address data sparsity caused by users with few item interactions and items with few user adoptions. Nevertheless, the existing contrastive learning-based methods fail to ensure that the positive (or negative) sequence obtained by some random augmentation (or sequence sampling) on a given anchor user sequence remains to be semantically similar (or different). When the positive and negative sequences turn out to be false positive and false negative respectively, it may lead to degraded recommendation performance. In this work, we address the above problem by proposing Explanation Guided Augmentations …

Artificial Intelligence, Consumers, And The Experience Economy, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee Oct 2022

Artificial Intelligence, Consumers, And The Experience Economy, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first used by McCarthy, Minsky, Rochester, and Shannon in a proposal for a summer research project in 1955 (Solomonoff, 1985). It is widely and commonly defined to be “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines” (McCarthy, 2006). Recent technological advances and methodological developments have made AI pervasive in new marketing offerings, ranging from self-driving cars, intelligent voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa, to burger-making robots at restaurants and rack-moving robots inside warehouses such as Amazon’s family of robots (Kiva, Pegasus, Xanthus) and delivery drones. There is optimism, and perhaps even over-optimism, of the …
