Machine Learning For Early Detection Of Pediatric Sepsis, Glory Manson-Endeboh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sepsis is a host response to infection in both adults and children. It contributes to approximately 1.7 million cases annually with nearly 270,000 annual deaths in the United States. In the United States, the financial burden of sepsis on survivors and their families including the hospitals is over $4.8 billion, at approximately $64,280 per hospitalization. The first goal of this thesis research is to develop efficient machine learning models to predict pediatric sepsis accurately for inpatients. The second objective is to develop machine learning methods to determine how early sepsis can be detected to mitigate mortality. We examine data collected …
Uni-Prover: A Universal Automated Prover For Specificationally Rich Languages, Nicodemus Msafiri John Mbwambo
Uni-Prover: A Universal Automated Prover For Specificationally Rich Languages, Nicodemus Msafiri John Mbwambo
All Dissertations
Formal software verification systems must be designed to adapt to growth in the scope and complexity of software, driven by expanding capabilities of computer hardware and domain of potential usage. They must provide specification languages that are flexible and rich enough to allow software developers to write precise and comprehensible specifications for a full spectrum of object-based software components. Rich specification languages allow for arbitrary extensions to the library of mathematical theories, and critically, verification of programs with such specifications require a universal automated prover. Most existing verification systems either incorporate specification languages limited to first-order logic, which lacks the …

Chicago Alliance For Equity In Computer Science, Steven Mcgee, Lucia Dettori, Ronald I. Greenberg, Andrew M. Rasmussen, Dale F. Reed, Don Yanek
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Each year, about 14,000 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students graduate with one year of high school computer science (CS) in fulfillment of the district’s CS graduation requirement. This accomplishment was the culmination of a decade of work by the Chicago Alliance for Equity in Computer Science (CAFÉCS), which includes CPS teachers and administrators, university CS faculty, and educational researchers. CAFÉCS research indicates that CPS significantly increased the capacity of schools to offer the Exploring Computer Science (ECS) introductory course, resulting in a rapid, equitable increase in students’ participation in CS. Making CS mandatory did not negatively impact performance in ECS. …

Chatbots with personality have been shown to affect engagement and user subjective satisfaction. Yet, the design of most chatbots focuses on functionality and accuracy rather than an interpersonal communication style. Existing studies on personality-imbued chatbots have mostly assessed the effect of chatbot personality on user preference and satisfaction. However, the influence of chatbot personality on behavioral qualities, such as users’ trust, engagement, and perceived authenticity of the chatbots, is largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, this study contributes: (1) A detailed design of a personality-imbued chatbot used in academic advising. (2) Empirical findings of an experiment with students who interacted …
Identification Of Factors Contributing To Traffic Crashes By Analysis Of Text Narratives, Cristian D. Arteaga-Sanchez
Identification Of Factors Contributing To Traffic Crashes By Analysis Of Text Narratives, Cristian D. Arteaga-Sanchez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The fatalities, injuries, and property damage that result from traffic crashes impose a significant burden on society. Current research and practice in traffic safety rely on analysis of quantitative data from crash reports to understand crash severity contributors and develop countermeasures. Despite advances from this effort, quantitative crash data suffers from drawbacks, such as the limited ability to capture all the information relevant to the crashes and the potential errors introduced during data collection. Crash narratives can help address these limitations, as they contain detailed descriptions of the context and sequence of events of the crash. However, the unstructured nature …

Jiapi: A Type Checker Generator For Statically Typed Languages, Benjamin Cisneros Merino
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Type systems are a key characteristic in the context of the study of programming languages. They frequently offer a simple, intuitive way of expressing and testing the fundamental structure of programs. This is especially true when types are used to provide formal, machine-checked documentation for an implementation. For example, the absence of type errors in code prior to execution is what type systems for static programming languages are designed to assure, and in the literature, type systems that satisfy this requirement are referred to as sound type systems. Types also define module interfaces, making them essential for achieving and maintaining …

Real–Time Semantic Segmentation For Railway Anomalies Analysis, Paul Stanik Iii
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the past few years, computer vision has made huge jumps due to deep learning which leverages increased computational power and access to data. The computer vision community has also embraced transparency to accelerate research progress by sharing open datasets and open source code. Access to large scale datasets and benchmark challenges propelled and opened the field. The autonomous vehicle community is a prime example. While there has been significant growth in the automotive vision community, not much has been done in the rail domain. Traditional rail inspection methods require special trains that are run during down time, have sensitive …

On The Robustness Of Diffusion In A Network Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras
On The Robustness Of Diffusion In A Network Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How can we assess a network's ability to maintain its functionality under attacks Network robustness has been studied extensively in the case of deterministic networks. However, applications such as online information diffusion and the behavior of networked public raise a question of robustness in probabilistic networks. We propose three novel robustness measures for networks hosting a diffusion under the Independent Cascade or Linear Threshold model, susceptible to attacks by an adversarial attacker who disables nodes. The outcome of such a process depends on the selection of its initiators, or seeds, by the seeder, as well as on two factors outside …

Soteriafl: A Unified Framework For Private Federated Learning With Communication Compression, Zhize Li, Haoyu Zhao, Boyue Li, Yuejie Chi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To enable large-scale machine learning in bandwidth-hungry environments such as wireless networks, significant progress has been made recently in designing communication-efficient federated learning algorithms with the aid of communication compression. On the other end, privacy-preserving, especially at the client level, is another important desideratum that has not been addressed simultaneously in the presence of advanced communication compression techniques yet. In this paper, we propose a unified framework that enhances the communication efficiency of private federated learning with communication compression. Exploiting both general compression operators and local differential privacy, we first examine a simple algorithm that applies compression directly to differentially-private …
How Developers Engineer Test Cases: An Observational Study, Maurício Aniche, Christoph Treude, Andy Zaidman
How Developers Engineer Test Cases: An Observational Study, Maurício Aniche, Christoph Treude, Andy Zaidman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One of the main challenges that developers face when testing their systems lies in engineering test cases that are good enough to reveal bugs. And while our body of knowledge on software testing and automated test case generation is already quite significant, in practice, developers are still the ones responsible for engineering test cases manually. Therefore, understanding the developers’ thought- and decision-making processes while engineering test cases is a fundamental step in making developers better at testing software. In this paper, we observe 13 developers thinking-aloud while testing different real-world open-source methods, and use these observations to explain how developers …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper aims to provide differentiated security protection for infotainment data commu- nication in Internet-of-Vehicle (IoV) networks. The IoV is a network of vehicles that uses various sensors, software, built-in hardware, and communication technologies to enable information exchange between pedestrians, cars, and urban infrastructure. Negligence on the security of infotainment data commu- nication in IoV networks can unintentionally open an easy access point for social engineering attacks. The attacker can spread false information about traffic conditions, mislead drivers in their directions, and interfere with traffic management. Such attacks can also cause distractions to the driver, which has a potential implication …

Complex healthcare systems require efficient and effective data-driven decision making in various aspects. As patient data becomes more available, advanced statistical learning and machine learning techniques are applied to improve data-driven decision making. However, patient health data, including clinical trial data, medical records, and electronic health records, are associated with several challenges. Patient health data includes medical information of a patient that may includedemographics, information relating to their health or illness, medications and treatments, etc. They are a combination of static and time series variables, with many censoring and missingness in the data, and are irregularly sampled in most cases. …
Fiscal And Monetary Policy Interactions In A Developing Economy: A Dsge-Based Evidence From Nigeria, Queen E. Oye, Philip O. Alege
Fiscal And Monetary Policy Interactions In A Developing Economy: A Dsge-Based Evidence From Nigeria, Queen E. Oye, Philip O. Alege
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study characterizes the nature of fiscal-monetary interaction in Nigeria and gauges its macroeconomic effects by estimating a New Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (NK DSGE) model. Two policy simulations were also conducted. The first experiment considers the desirable active-passive policy mix while the second experiment ranks alternative monetary policy rules among the differing objectives of price, output and exchange rate stabilization. The study finds that fiscal and monetary policies interact as complements in an active monetary and passive fiscal policy mix over the sample period. The result from the first policy simulation reveals that the active monetary and passive …

Recently, there has been a significant growth of interest in applying software engineering techniques for the quality assurance of deep learning (DL) systems. One popular direction is deep learning testing, i.e., given a property of test, defects of DL systems are found either by fuzzing or guided search with the help of certain testing metrics. However, recent studies have revealed that the neuron coverage metrics, commonly used by most existing DL testing approaches, are not necessarily correlated with model quality (e.g., robustness, the most studied model property), and are also not an effective measurement on the confidence of the model …

Learning Dynamic Multimodal Implicit And Explicit Networks For Multiple Financial Tasks, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many financial f orecasting d eep l earning w orks focus on the single task of predicting stock returns for trading with unimodal numerical inputs. Investment and risk management however involves multiple financial t asks - f orecasts o f expected returns, risks and correlations of multiple stocks in portfolios, as well as important events affecting different stocks - to support decision making. Moreover, stock returns are influenced by large volumes of non-stationary time-series information from a variety of modalities and the propagation of such information across inter-company relationship networks. Such networks could be explicit - observed co-occurrences in online …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Converting a human portrait to anime style is a desirable but challenging problem. Existing methods fail to resolve this problem due to the large inherent gap between two domains that cannot be overcome by a simple direct mapping. For this reason, these methods struggle to preserve the appearance features in the original photo. In this paper, we discover an intermediate domain, the coser portrait (portraits of humans costuming as anime characters), that helps bridge this gap. It alleviates the learning ambiguity and loosens the mapping difficulty in a progressive manner. Specifically, we start from learning the mapping between coser and …
Segment-Wise Time-Varying Dynamic Bayesian Network With Graph Regularization, Xing Yang, Chen Zhang, Baihua Zheng
Segment-Wise Time-Varying Dynamic Bayesian Network With Graph Regularization, Xing Yang, Chen Zhang, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Time-varying dynamic Bayesian network (TVDBN) is essential for describing time-evolving directed conditional dependence structures in complex multivariate systems. In this article, we construct a TVDBN model, together with a score-based method for its structure learning. The model adopts a vector autoregressive (VAR) model to describe inter-slice and intra-slice relations between variables. By allowing VAR parameters to change segment-wisely over time, the time-varying dynamics of the network structure can be described. Furthermore, considering some external information can provide additional similarity information of variables. Graph Laplacian is further imposed to regularize similar nodes to have similar network structures. The regularized maximum a …

A Logistic Regression And Linear Programming Approach For Multi-Skill Staffing Optimization In Call Centers, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai, Fabian Bastin, Pierre L'Ecuyer
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study a staffing optimization problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to minimize the total cost of agents under some quality of service (QoS) constraints. The key challenge lies in the fact that the QoS functions have no closed-form and need to be approximated by simulation. In this paper we propose a new way to approximate the QoS functions by logistic functions and design a new algorithm that combines logistic regression, cut generations and logistic-based local search to efficiently find good staffing solutions. We report computational results using examples up to 65 call types and 89 agent groups …

Dronlomaly: Runtime Detection Of Anomalous Drone Behaviors Via Log Analysis And Deep Learning, Lwin Khin Shar, Wei Minn, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Jianli Fan, Lingxiao Jiang, Daniel Wai Kiat Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Drones are increasingly popular and getting used in a variety of missions such as area surveillance, pipeline inspection, cinematography, etc. While the drone is conducting a mission, anomalies such as sensor fault, actuator fault, configuration errors, bugs in controller program, remote cyber- attack, etc., may affect the drone’s physical stability and cause serious safety violations such as crashing into the public. During a flight mission, drones typically log flight status and state units such as GPS coordinates, actuator outputs, accelerator readings, gyroscopic readings, etc. These log data may reflect the above-mentioned anomalies. In this paper, we propose a novel, deep …

Out-of-distribution (OOD) settings are used to measure a model’s performance when the distribution of the test data is different from that of the training data. NLU models are known to suffer in OOD settings (Utama et al., 2020b). We study this issue from the perspective of causality, which sees confounding bias as the reason for models to learn spurious correlations. While a common solution is to perform intervention, existing methods handle only known and single confounder, but in many NLU tasks the confounders can be both unknown and multifactorial. In this paper, we propose a novel interventional training method called …
Cold Calls To Enhance Class Participation And Student Engagement, Manoj Thulasidas, Aldy Gunawan
Cold Calls To Enhance Class Participation And Student Engagement, Manoj Thulasidas, Aldy Gunawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The question whether cold calls increase student engagement in the classroom has not been conclusively answered in the literature. This study describes the automated system to implement unbiased, randomized cold calling by posing a question, allowing all students to think first and then calling on a particular student to respond. Since we already have a measure of the level of student engagement as the self-reported classparticipation entries from the students, its correlation to cold calling is also further studied. The results show that there is a statistically significant increase in the class participation reported, and therefore in student engagement, in …

Towards Reinterpreting Neural Topic Models Via Composite Activations, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Towards Reinterpreting Neural Topic Models Via Composite Activations, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most Neural Topic Models (NTM) use a variational auto-encoder framework producing K topics limited to the size of the encoder’s output. These topics are interpreted through the selection of the top activated words via the weights or reconstructed vector of the decoder that are directly connected to each neuron. In this paper, we present a model-free two-stage process to reinterpret NTM and derive further insights on the state of the trained model. Firstly, building on the original information from a trained NTM, we generate a pool of potential candidate “composite topics” by exploiting possible co-occurrences within the original set of …

Artificial intelligence systems, such as Sentiment Analysis (SA) systems, typically learn from large amounts of data that may reflect human bias. Consequently, such systems may exhibit unintended demographic bias against specific characteristics (e.g., gender, occupation, country-of-origin, etc.). Such bias manifests in an SA system when it predicts different sentiments for similar texts that differ only in the characteristic of individuals described. To automatically uncover bias in SA systems, this paper presents BiasFinder, an approach that can discover biased predictions in SA systems via metamorphic testing. A key feature of BiasFinder is the automatic curation of suitable templates from any given …

Code search is a core software engineering task. Effective code search tools can help developers substantially improve their software development efficiency and effectiveness. In recent years, many code search studies have leveraged different techniques, such as deep learning and information retrieval approaches, to retrieve expected code from a large-scale codebase. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive comparative summary of existing code search approaches. To understand the research trends in existing code search studies, we systematically reviewed 81 relevant studies. We investigated the publication trends of code search studies, analyzed key components, such as codebase, query, and modeling technique …

Distilled Siamese Networks For Visual Tracking, Jianbing Shen, Yuanpei Liu, Xingping Dong, Xiankai Lu, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Steven Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, Siamese network based trackers have significantly advanced the state-of-the-art in real-time tracking. Despite their success, Siamese trackers tend to suffer from high memory costs, which restrict their applicability to mobile devices with tight memory budgets. To address this issue, we propose a distilled Siamese tracking framework to learn small, fast and accurate trackers (students), which capture critical knowledge from large Siamese trackers (teachers) by a teacher-students knowledge distillation model. This model is intuitively inspired by the one teacher versus multiple students learning method typically employed in schools. In particular, our model contains a single teacher-student distillation module …
