According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 932,000 people in the US have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Just about 75% of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involved Opioid, which suggests that the US is in an Opioid overdose epidemic. Identifying individuals likely to develop Opioid use disorder (OUD) can help public health in planning effective prevention, intervention, drug overdose and recovery policies. Further, a better understanding of prediction of overdose leading to the neurobiology of OUD may lead to new therapeutics. In recent years, very limited work has been done using statistical …

An Investigation Of Methods For Improving Spatial Invariance Of Convolutional Neural Networks For Image Classification, David Noel Jan 2023

An Investigation Of Methods For Improving Spatial Invariance Of Convolutional Neural Networks For Image Classification, David Noel

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved impressive results on complex visual tasks such as image recognition. They are commonly assumed to be spatially invariant to small transformations of their input images. Spatial invariance is a fundamental property that characterizes how a model reacts to input transformations, i.e., its generalizability - and deep networks that can robustly classify objects placed in different orientations or lighting conditions have the property of invariance. However, several authors have recently shown that this is not the case, and that slight rotations, translations, or rescaling of their input images significantly reduce the network’s predictive accuracy. Furthermore, …

An Adaptive Image Restoration Algorithm Based On Hybrid Total Variation Regularization, Cong Thang Pham, Thi Thu Thao Tran, Hung Vi Dang, Hoai Phuong Dang Jan 2023

An Adaptive Image Restoration Algorithm Based On Hybrid Total Variation Regularization, Cong Thang Pham, Thi Thu Thao Tran, Hung Vi Dang, Hoai Phuong Dang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In imaging systems, the mixed Poisson-Gaussian noise (MPGN) model can accurately describe the noise present. Total variation (TV) regularization-based methods have been widely utilized for Poisson-Gaussian removal with edge-preserving. However, TV regularization sometimes causes staircase artifacts with piecewise constants. To overcome this issue, we propose a new model in which the regularization term is represented by a combination of total variation and high-order total variation. We study the existence and uniqueness of the minimizer for the considered model. Numerically, the minimization problem can be efficiently solved by the alternating minimization method. Furthermore, we give rigorous convergence analyses of our algorithm. …

This study performed a deep learning-based classification of chaotic systems over their phase portraits. To the best of the authors' knowledge, such classification studies over phase portraits have not been conducted in the literature. To that end, a dataset consisting of the phase portraits of the most known two chaotic systems, namely Lorenz and Chen, is generated for different values of the parameters, initial conditions, step size, and time length. Then, a classification with high accuracy is carried out employing transfer learning methods. The transfer learning methods used in the study are SqueezeNet, VGG-19, AlexNet, ResNet50, ResNet101, DenseNet201, ShuffleNet, and …

Indoor localization has become a popular topic with the development of location-based services (LBS) and indoor navigation systems. Beside these circumstances indoor positioning has been the focus of attention for researchers as the most important component of these applications. Many signals are used as distinguishable features for indoor positioning. RF-based Wi-Fi and BLE systems are the most popular ones and these have been preferred because of their high distinguishable feature. The use of geomagnetism, a natural signal found all over the world, has also been of interest to many researchers. Geomagnetic signals being distorted in the indoor area due to …

Variational Autoencoder-Based Anomaly Detection In Time Series Data For Inventory Record Inaccuracy, Hali̇l Arğun, Sadetti̇n Emre Alpteki̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Retail companies monitor inventory stock levels regularly and manage them based on forecasted sales to sustain their market position. Inventory accuracy, defined as the difference between the warehouse stock records and the actual inventory, is critical for preventing stockouts and shortages. The root causes of inventory inaccuracy are the employee or customer theft, product damage or spoilage, and wrong shipments. In this paper, we aim at detecting inaccurate stocks of one of Turkey's largest supermarket chain using the variational autoencoder (VAE), which is an unsupervised learning method. Based on the findings, we showed that VAE is able to model the …

Binary Text Classification Using Genetic Programming With Crossover-Based Oversampling For Imbalanced Datasets, Mona Aljero, Nazi̇fe Di̇mi̇li̇ler

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is well known that classifiers trained using imbalanced datasets usually have a bias toward the majority class. In this context, classification models can present a high classification performance overall and for the majority class, even when the performance for the minority class is significantly lower. This paper presents a genetic programming (GP) model with a crossover-based oversampling technique for oversampling the imbalanced dataset for binary text classification. The aim of this study is to apply an oversampling technique to solve the imbalanced issue and improve the performance of the GP model that employed the proposed technique. The proposed technique …

A Robust Model For Spot Virtual Machine Bidding In The Cloud Market Using Information Gap Decision Theory (Igdt), Mona Naghdehforoushha, Mehdi Dehghan Takht Fooladi, Mohammed Hossein Rezvani, Mohammad Mehdi Gilanian Sadeghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The spot market is one of the most common cloud markets where cloud providers, such as Amazon EC2, rent their surplus computing resources at lower prices in the form of spot virtual machines (SVMs). In this market, which is often managed through an auction mechanism, users seek optimal bidding strategies for renting SVMs to minimize cost and risk. Uncertainty in the price of SVMs and their low availability/reliability is a challenging issue to bid on the user side. In this paper, we present a robust model for minimizing the cost of executing tasks by considering the uncertainty of the price …

Lvq Treatment For Zero-Shot Learning, Firat İsmai̇loğlu Jan 2023

Lvq Treatment For Zero-Shot Learning, Firat İsmai̇loğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In image classification, there are no labeled training instances for some classes, which are therefore called unseen classes or test classes. To classify these classes, zero-shot learning (ZSL) was developed, which typically attempts to learn a mapping from the (visual) feature space to the semantic space in which the classes are represented by a list of semantically meaningful attributes. However, the fact that this mapping is learned without using instances of the test classes affects the performance of ZSL, which is known as the domain shift problem. In this study, we propose to apply the learning vector quantization (LVQ) algorithm …

Murder On The Vr Express: Studying The Impact Of Thought Experiments At A Distance In Virtual Reality, Andrew Kissel, Krzysztof J. Rechowicz, John B. Shull

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Hypothetical thought experiments allow researchers to gain insights into widespread moral intuitions and provide opportunities for individuals to explore their moral commitments. Previous thought experiment studies in virtual reality (VR) required participants to come to an on-site laboratory, which possibly restricted the study population, introduced an observer effect, and made internal reflection on the participants’ part more difficult. These shortcomings are particularly crucial today, as results from such studies are increasingly impacting the development of artificial intelligence systems, self-driving cars, and other technologies. This paper explores the viability of deploying thought experiments in commercially available in-home VR headsets. We conducted …

AMR detects the modulation scheme of the received signal without any prior information. Recently, many Artificial Intelligence (AI) based AMR methods have been proposed, inspired by the considerable progress of AI methods in various fields. On the one hand, AI-based AMR methods can outperform traditional methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency. On the other hand, they are susceptible to new types of cyberattacks, such as model poisoning or adversarial attacks. This paper explores the vulnerabilities …

Efficient Approximate Range Aggregation Over Large-Scale Spatial Data Federation, Yexuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Bolin Ding, Lei Chen Jan 2023

Efficient Approximate Range Aggregation Over Large-Scale Spatial Data Federation, Yexuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Bolin Ding, Lei Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Range aggregation is a primitive operation in spatial data applications and there is a growing demand to support such operations over a data federation, where the entire spatial data are separately held by multiple data providers (a.k.a., data silos). Data federations notably increase the amount of data available for data-intensive applications such as smart mobility planning and public health emergency responses. Yet they also challenge the conventional implementation of range aggregation queries because the raw data cannot be shared within the federation and the data partition at each data silo is fixed during query processing. These constraints limit the design …

Active Learning For Efficient Soil Monitoring In Large Terrain With Heterogeneous Sensor Network, Hui Chen, Ju Wang

Publications and Research

Soils are a complex ecosystem that provides critical services, such as growing food, supplying antibiotics, filtering wastes, and maintaining biodiversity; hence monitoring soil health and domestication is required for sustainable human development. Low-cost and high-resolution soil monitoring systems are challenging to design and build. Compounded by the sheer size of the monitoring area of interest and the variety of biological, chemical, and physical parameters to monitor, naive approaches to adding or scheduling more sensors will suffer from cost and scalability problems. We investigate a multi-robot sensing system integrated with an active learning-based predictive modeling technique. Taking advantage of advances in …

I Know What You Are Searching For: Code Snippet Recommendation From Stack Overflow Posts, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John C. Grundy, Xindong Zhang, Zhenchang Xing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow has been heavily used by software developers to seek programming-related information. More and more developers use Community Question and Answer forums, such as Stack Overflow, to search for code examples of how to accomplish a certain coding task. This is often considered to be more efficient than working from source documentation, tutorials, or full worked examples. However, due to the complexity of these online Question and Answer forums and the very large volume of information they contain, developers can be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of available information. This makes it hard to find and/or even be aware …

Reks: Role-Based Encrypted Keyword Search With Enhanced Access Control For Outsourced Cloud Data, Yibin Miao, Feng Li, Xiaohua Jia, Huaxiong Wang, Ximeng Liu, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Keyword-based search over encrypted data is an important technique to achieve both data confidentiality and utilization in cloud outsourcing services. While commonly used access control mechanisms, such as identity-based encryption and attribute-based encryption, do not generally scale well for hierarchical access permissions. To solve this problem, we propose a Role-based Encrypted Keyword Search (REKS) scheme by using the role-based access control and broadcast encryption. Specifically, REKS allows owners to deploy hierarchical access control by allowing users with parent roles to have access permissions from child roles. Using REKS, we further facilitate token generation preprocessing and efficient user management, thereby significantly …

Vacsen: A Visualization Approach For Noise Awareness In Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan, Yong Wang, Weiwen Jiang, Ying Mao, Qiang Guan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantum computing has attracted considerable public attention due to its exponential speedup over classical computing. Despite its advantages, today's quantum computers intrinsically suffer from noise and are error-prone. To guarantee the high fidelity of the execution result of a quantum algorithm, it is crucial to inform users of the noises of the used quantum computer and the compiled physical circuits. However, an intuitive and systematic way to make users aware of the quantum computing noise is still missing. In this paper, we fill the gap by proposing a novel visualization approach to achieve noise-aware quantum computing. It provides a holistic …

Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction Incorporating Syntactic Constituency Parsing Tree And Commonsense Knowledge Graph, Zhenda Hu, Zhaoxia Wang, Yinglin Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The aspect sentiment triplet extraction (ASTE) task aims to extract the target term and the opinion term, and simultaneously identify the sentiment polarity of target-opinion pairs from the given sentences. While syntactic constituency information and commonsense knowledge are both important and valuable for the ASTE task, only a few studies have explored how to integrate them via flexible graph convolutional networks (GCNs) for this task. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel end-to-end model, namely GCN-EGTS, which is an enhanced Grid Tagging Scheme (GTS) for ASTE leveraging syntactic constituency parsing tree and a commonsense knowledge graph based on …

Learning Analytics In Informal, Participatory Collaborative Learning, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Aditya Singh, Yun-Chen Chen, Bing Tian Dai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning Analytics was recognized to be “the third wave of large-scale developments in instructional technology”. Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have been widely adopted as the learning analytics tools because the captured data represents how the learners’ interact with the system during formal learning. However, most LMSs’ analytics models do not capture learning activities outside the systems. We built an integrated Telegram mobile application and a web-based portal discussion forum, to enable informal, participatory and collaborative learning beyond the classroom. We analyzed student-initiated question-and-answer discussion posts where our machine learning algorithm will predict the quality of the posts, and the system …

Coordinating Multi-Party Vehicle Routing With Location Congestion Via Iterative Best Response, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This work is motivated by a real-world problem of coordinating B2B pickup-delivery operations to shopping malls involving multiple non-collaborative logistics service providers (LSPs) in a congested city where space is scarce. This problem can be categorized as a vehicle routing problem with pickup and delivery, time windows and location congestion with multiple LSPs (or ML-VRPLC in short), and we propose a scalable, decentralized, coordinated planning approach via iterative best response. We formulate the problem as a strategic game where each LSP is a self-interested agent but is willing to participate in a coordinated planning as long as there are sufficient …

Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer

Theses and Dissertations

Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) is a technique commonly used to determine surface or interfacial tension. Applications of traditional ASDA methods to process analytical technologies are limited by computational speed and image quality. Here, we address these limitations using a novel machine learning approach to analysis. With a convolutional neural network (CNN), we were able to achieve an experimental fit precision of (+/-) 0.122 mN/m in predicting the surface tension of drop images at a rate of 1.5 ms^-1 versus 7.7 s^-1, which is more than 5,000 times faster than the traditional method. The results are validated on real images …

Face Anti-Spoofing And Deep Learning Based Unsupervised Image Recognition Systems, Enoch Solomon Jan 2023

Face Anti-Spoofing And Deep Learning Based Unsupervised Image Recognition Systems, Enoch Solomon

Theses and Dissertations

One of the main problems of a supervised deep learning approach is that it requires large amounts of labeled training data, which are not always easily available. This PhD dissertation addresses the above-mentioned problem by using a novel unsupervised deep learning face verification system called UFace, that does not require labeled training data as it automatically, in an unsupervised way, generates training data from even a relatively small size of data. The method starts by selecting, in unsupervised way, k-most similar and k-most dissimilar images for a given face image. Moreover, this PhD dissertation proposes a new loss function to …

Fast Multiscale Functional Estimation In Optimal Emg Placement For Robotic Prosthesis Controllers, Jin Ren, Guohui Song, Lucia Tabacu, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Electromyogram (EMG) signals play a significant role in decoding muscle contraction information for robotic hand prosthesis controllers. Widely applied decoders require a large amount of EMG signals sensors, resulting in complicated calculations and unsatisfactory predictions. By the biomechanical process of single degree-of-freedom human hand movements, only several EMG signals are essential for accurate predictions. Recently, a novel predictor of hand movements adopted a multistage sequential adaptive functional estimation (SAFE) method based on the historical functional linear model (FLM) to select important EMG signals and provide precise projections.

However, SAFE repeatedly performs matrix-vector multiplications with a dense representation matrix of the …
