C++ is a widely used programming language and the C++ front-end is a critical part of a C++ compiler. Although many techniques have been proposed to test compilers, few studies are devoted to detecting bugs in C++ compiler. In this study, we take the first step to detect bugs in C++ compiler front-ends. To do so, two main challenges need to be addressed, namely, the acquisition of test programs that are more likely to trigger bugs in compiler front-ends and the bug identification from complicated compiler outputs. In this article, we propose a novel framework named Ccoft to detect bugs …

Demystifying Performance Regressions In String Solvers, Yao Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Yi Li, Yi Lin, Sen Chen, Yang Liu, Xiaohong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Over the past few years, SMT string solvers have found their applications in an increasing number of domains, such as program analyses in mobile and Web applications, which require the ability to reason about string values. A series of research has been carried out to find quality issues of string solvers in terms of its correctness and performance. Yet, none of them has considered the performance regressions happening across multiple versions of a string solver. To fill this gap, in this paper, we focus on solver performance regressions (SPRs), i.e., unintended slowdowns introduced during the evolution of string solvers. To …

Concept-Oriented Transformers For Visual Sentiment Analysis, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the richly multimedia Web, detecting sentiment signals expressed in images would support multiple applications, e.g., measuring customer satisfaction from online reviews, analyzing trends and opinions from social media. Given an image, visual sentiment analysis aims at recognizing positive or negative sentiment, and occasionally neutral sentiment as well. A nascent yet promising direction is Transformer-based models applied to image data, whereby Vision Transformer (ViT) establishes remarkable performance on largescale vision benchmarks. In addition to investigating the fitness of ViT for visual sentiment analysis, we further incorporate concept orientation into the self-attention mechanism, which is the core component of Transformer. The …
Generalizing Graph Neural Network Across Graphs And Time, Zhihao Wen
Generalizing Graph Neural Network Across Graphs And Time, Zhihao Wen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph-structured data widely exist in diverse real-world scenarios, analysis of these graphs can uncover valuable insights about their respective application domains. However, most previous works focused on learning node representation from a single fixed graph, while many real-world scenarios require representations to be quickly generated for unseen nodes, new edges, or entirely new graphs. This inductive ability is essential for high-throughtput machine learning systems. However, this inductive graph representation problem is quite difficult, compared to the transductive setting, for that generalizing to unseen nodes requires new subgraphs containing the new nodes to be aligned to the neural network trained already. …

Blockscope: Detecting And Investigating Propagated Vulnerabilities In Forked Blockchain Projects, Xiao Yi, Yuzhou Fang, Daoyuan Wu, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to the open-source nature of the blockchain ecosystem, it is common for new blockchains to fork or partially reuse the code of classic blockchains. For example, the popular Dogecoin, Litecoin, Binance BSC, and Polygon are all variants of Bitcoin/Ethereum. These “forked” blockchains thus could encounter similar vulnerabilities that are propagated from Bitcoin/Ethereum during forking or subsequently commit fetching. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study of detecting and investigating the propagated vulnerabilities in forked blockchain projects. To facilitate this study, we propose BlockScope, a novel tool that can effectively and efficiently detect multiple types of cloned vulnerabilities given …

Improving Rumor Detection By Promoting Information Campaigns With Transformer-Based Generative Adversarial Learning, Jing Ma, Jun Li, Wei Gao, Yang Yang, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rumors can cause devastating consequences to individuals and our society. Analysis shows that the widespread of rumors typically results from deliberate promotion of information aiming to shape the collective public opinions on the concerned event. In this paper, we combat such chaotic phenomenon with a countermeasure by mirroring against how such chaos is created to make rumor detection more robust and effective. Our idea is inspired by adversarial learning method originated from Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). We propose a GAN-style approach, where a generator is designed to produce uncertain or conflicting voices, further polarizing the original conversational threads to boost …

Effective Graph Kernels For Evolving Functional Brain Networks, Xinlei Wang, Jinyi Chen, Bing Tian Dai, Junchang Xin, Yu Gu, Ge Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The graph kernel of the functional brain network is an effective method in the field of neuropsychiatric disease diagnosis like Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The traditional static brain networks cannot reflect dynamic changes of brain activities, but evolving brain networks, which are a series of brain networks over time, are able to seize such dynamic changes. As far as we know, the graph kernel method is effective for calculating the differences among networks. Therefore, it has a great potential to understand the dynamic changes of evolving brain networks, which are a series of chronological differences. However, if the conventional graph kernel …

Prudex-Compass: Towards Systematic Evaluation Of Reinforcement Learning In Financial Markets, Shuo Sun, Molei Qin, Xinrun Wang, Bo An
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The financial markets, which involve more than $90 trillion market capitals, attract the attention of innumerable investors around the world. Recently, reinforcement learning in financial markets (FinRL) has emerged as a promising direction to train agents for making profitable investment decisions. However, the evaluation of most FinRL methods only focuses on profit-related measures and ignores many critical axes, which are far from satisfactory for financial practitioners to deploy these methods into real-world financial markets. Therefore, we introduce PRUDEX-Compass, which has 6 axes, i.e., Profitability, Risk-control, Universality, Diversity, rEliability, and eXplainability, with a total of 17 measures for a systematic evaluation. …

Technologies and online learning platforms have changed the contemporary educational paradigm, giving institutions more alternatives in a complex and competitive environment. Online learning platforms, learning-based analytics, and data mining tools are increasingly complementing and replacing traditional education techniques. However, academic underachievement, graduation delays, and student dropouts remain common problems in educational institutions. One potential method of preventing these issues is by predicting student performance through the use of institution data and advanced technologies. However, to date, scholars have yet to develop a module that can accurately predict students’ academic achievement and commitment. This dissertation attempts to bridge that gap by …
Modeling Daily Fantasy Basketball, Martin Jiang
Modeling Daily Fantasy Basketball, Martin Jiang
Master's Theses
Daily fantasy basketball presents interesting problems to researchers due to the extensive amounts of data that needs to be explored when trying to predict player performance. A large amount of this data can be noisy due to the variance within the sport of basketball. Because of this, a high degree of skill is required to consistently win in daily fantasy basketball contests. On any given day, users are challenged to predict how players will perform and create a lineup of the eight best players under fixed salary and positional requirements. In this thesis, we present a tool to assist daily …
Psf Sampling In Fluorescence Image Deconvolution, Eric A. Inman
Psf Sampling In Fluorescence Image Deconvolution, Eric A. Inman
Master's Theses
All microscope imaging is largely affected by inherent resolution limitations because of out-of-focus light and diffraction effects. The traditional approach to restoring the image resolution is to use a deconvolution algorithm to “invert” the effect of convolving the volume with the point spread function. However, these algorithms fall short in several areas such as noise amplification and stopping criterion. In this paper, we try to reconstruct an explicit volumetric representation of the fluorescence density in the sample and fit a neural network to the target z-stack to properly minimize a reconstruction cost function for an optimal result. Additionally, we do …
Garbage In ≠ Garbage Out: Exploring Gan Resilience To Image Training Set Degradations, Nicholas M. Crino
Garbage In ≠ Garbage Out: Exploring Gan Resilience To Image Training Set Degradations, Nicholas M. Crino
Theses and Dissertations
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have received increasing attention in recent years due to their ability to capture complex, high-dimensional data distributions without the need for extensive labeling. Since their conception in 2014, a wide array of GAN variants have been proposed featuring alternative architectures, optimizers, and loss functions with the goal of improving performance and training stability. While this research has yielded GAN variants robust to training set shrinkage and corruption, our research focuses on quantifying the resilience of a GAN architecture to specific modes of image degradation. We conduct systematic experimentation to determine empirically the effects of 10 fundamental …
Bayesian Recurrent Neural Networks For Real Time Object Detection, Stephen Z. Kimatian
Bayesian Recurrent Neural Networks For Real Time Object Detection, Stephen Z. Kimatian
Theses and Dissertations
Neural networks have become increasingly popular in real time object detection algorithms. A major concern with these algorithms is their ability to quantify their own uncertainty, leading to many high profile failures. This research proposes three novel real time detection algorithms. The first of leveraging Bayesian convolutional neural layers producing a predictive distribution, the second leveraging predictions from previous frames, and the third model combining these two techniques together. These augmentations seek to mitigate the calibration problem of modern detection algorithms. These three models are compared to the state of the art YOLO architecture; with the strongest contending model achieving …

H-Plane Siw Horn Antenna With Enhanced Front-To-Back Ratio For 5g Applications, Özlem Akgün, Nurhan Türker Tokan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) antennas are indispensable components in the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication systems. With the inherent advantages of integration capability, substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) antenna is an excellent choice for applications in the mmWave frequency bands. However, reflection losses occur at dielectric-filled thin apertures of SIW antennas. These reflections can be overcome by impedance matching between the aperture and the free space. In this study, we introduce an mmWave SIW horn antenna having impedance matching transitions (IMTs) across the horn's aperture width. The designed antenna, operating in the 24-28 GHz band, is simulated with a full-wave analysis tool. The simulation …

Development Of Two Stage Optimization-Based Demand Response Technique For Smart Homes Under Real Time Pricing, Govind Rai Goyal, Shelly Vadhera
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Residential load management deals with two major objectives viz. minimizing the cost of monthly electricity bill and peak demand of power consumption. Both objectives can be achieved by effective operational scheduling of smart home appliances. These two objectives are conflicting in nature because rescheduling of appliances in order to minimize one objective may result in the rise of another. To achieve both objectives concurrently, an algorithm is suggested in this paper based on artificial intelligent techniques like cuckoo search, hybrid GA-PSO, and adaptive cuckoo search. The proposed algorithm is tested successfully on seven households of different monthly power consumption and …

A Novel Covid-19 Herd Immunity-Based Optimizer For Optimal Accommodation Of Solar Pv With Battery Energy Storage Systems Including Variation In Load And Generation, Sumanth Pemmada, Nita Patne, Divyesh Kumar, Ashwini Manchalwar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The world has now looked towards installing more renewable energy sources type distributed generation (DG), such as solar photovoltaic DG (SPVDG), because of its advantages to the environment and the quality of power supply it produces. However, these sources' optimal placement and size are determined before their accommodation in the power distribution system (PDS). This is to avoid an increase in power loss and deviations in the voltage profile. Furthermore, in this article, solar PV is integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) to compensate for the shortcomings of SPVDG as well as the reduction in peak demand. This paper …

Boomerang Algorithm Based On Swarm Optimization For Inverse Kinematics Of 6 Dof Open Chain Manipulators, Okan Duymazlar, Di̇lşad Engi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a feasible swarm intelligence algorithm is proposed that computes the inverse kinematics solution of 6 degree of freedom (DOF) industrial robot arms, which are frequently used in industrial and medical applications. The proposed algorithm is named as Boomerang algorithm due to its recursive structure. The proposed algorithm aims to reduce the computation time to feasible levels without increasing the position and orientation errors. In order to reduce the computational time in swarm optimization algorithms and increase feasibility, an alternative definition method was used instead of the DH method in defining the robot arm kinematic configuration. The effect …

The tailpipe emissions caused by vehicles using internal combustion engines are a significant source of air pollution. To reduce the health hazards caused by air pollution, advanced countries are now adopting the use of electric vehicles (EVs). Due to the advancement of electric vehicles, research and development efforts are being made to improve the performance of EV motors. With a nominal reference stator flux, the classical induction motor drive generates significant flux, torque ripple, and current harmonics. In this work, a teamwork optimization algorithm (TOA)-based optimal stator flux strategy is suggested for torque ripple reduction applied in a classical direct …

Study Of Helical Antenna Endowing Short Wire Length And Compact Structure For High-Frequency Operations And Its Exclusive Manufacturing Process, Meli̇h Aslan, Kaan Şik, İzzet Güzelkara, İbrahi̇m Tuna Özdür, Veli̇ Tayfun Kiliç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper a study of a helical antenna resonating at high-frequency (HF) band with a very compact structure is reported. The designed antenna's S11 parameter magnitude change with frequency was calculated for different geometrical parameters. For each case, first, only a single parameter was changed. Then for a fair comparison, multiple parameters were changed simultaneously while the total wire length was set to be constant. Also, shifts in resonance frequencies and variations in -10 dB bandwidths were investigated. Our results show that resonance behaviour changes distinctively with the geometrical parameters and it allows shortening of the antenna wire length. …

A Multistep Fusion Matcher Approach For Large Scale Latent Fingerprint/Palmprint Recognition, İsmai̇l Kilinç, Yusuf Oğuzhan Artan, Emre Başeski̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Latent fingerprints are ubiquitously used as forensic evidence by law enforcement agencies in solving crimes. However, due to deformations and artifacts within latent fingerprint images, performance of the automated latent recognition systems are far from desired levels. A basic matcher specifically designed for clean fingerprints using a minutiae-based matching algorithm can have high speed and accuracy in a sensor-to-sensor matching task, but low accuracy in matching latent prints, due to scale, rotation and quality differences between latent and sensor images. In this study, we propose a unique multistep fusion matcher (FM) on top of a base matcher that would utilize …

Reconstructing Dynamic Human Shapes From Sparse Silhouettes Via Latent Space Optimization Of Parametric Shape Models, Kanika Singla, Parma Nand
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The problem of dynamic 3D reconstruction has gained popularity over the last few years with most approaches relying on data driven learning and optimization methods. However this is quite a challenging task because of the need for tracking different features in both space and time?that too of deformable objects-where such robust tracking may not always be possible. A common way to better ground the problem is by using some forms of regularizations primarily on the shape representations. Over the years, mesh-based linear blend skinning models have been the standard for fitting templates of humans to the observed time series data …

Solving Turkish Math Word Problems By Sequence-To-Sequence Encoder-Decoder Models, Esi̇n Gedi̇k, Tunga Güngör
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Solving math word problems (MWP) is a challenging task due to the semantic gap between natural language texts and mathematical equations. The main purpose of the task is to take a written math problem as input and produce a proper equation as output for solving that problem. This paper describes a sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) neural model for automatically solving Turkish MWPs based on their semantic meanings in the text. It comprises a bidirectional encoder to comprehend the semantics of the problem by encoding the input sequence and a decoder with attention to extract the equation by tracking the semantic meanings of …

An Exploratory Study On The Effect Of Applying Various Artificial Neural Networks To The Classification Of Lower Limb Injury, Rachel Yun, May Salama, Lamiaa Elrefaei
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper explores the application of a deep neural network (DNN) framework to human gait analysis for injury classification. The paper aims to identify whether a subject is healthy or has an injury of the ankle, knee, hip, or heel solely based on ground reaction force plate measurements. We consider how three DNNs-the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), fully convolutional network (FCN), and residual network (ResNet)-can be applied to gait analysis when the number of trainable network parameters far exceeds the number of training samples, and benchmark their performance in this context against that of shallow neural networks. The DNN architectures outperformed …

Large-Scale Identification And Analysis Of Factors Impacting Simple Bug Resolution Times In Open Source Software Repositories, Elia Eiroa-Lledo, Rao Hamza Ali, Gabriela Pinto, Jillian Anderson, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
One of the most prominent issues the ever-growing open-source software community faces is the abundance of buggy code. Well-established version control systems and repository hosting services such as GitHub and Maven provide a checks-and-balances structure to minimize the amount of buggy code introduced. Although these platforms are effective in mitigating the problem, it still remains. To further the efforts toward a more effective and quicker response to bugs, we must understand the factors that affect the time it takes to fix one. We apply a custom traversal algorithm to commits made for open source repositories to determine when “simple stupid …
