The rare earth elements, including elements 57 through 71, provide many diverse series of studies through their chemical reactions. In as much as these elements are all in Group III of the periodic table, they are markedly similar in their properties. The separation, insulation and purification of the various rare earths from one another has long been a problem of great interest to the chemist. All of these elements show a principle valence of plus three. Cerium has a well-defined plus four state, stable in aqueous solution and europium forms a stable, insoluable divalent sulfate. Four aims of a study of cyanide baths were:
1. To study the intermediate products formed during the operation of plating and stripping baths under various conditions.
2. To identify these intermediate products or complexes and to determine whether or not they caused the failure of the bath.
3. To consider the conditions that caused a bath to fail, and to be able thereby to increase the life of the bath.
4. To develop a fast, accurate method for controlling the baths, preferably by means of the cyanide content.

Luminescent materials have come into wide and important use within the past ten years in such equipments as the fluorescent lamp, and the cathode ray television tube. The problem of wax transparency with which this thesis is concerned interested the author as a result of past experience with a bakery firm. The practical application of a positive solution to this problem would be as a competitor of cellophane, that is, transparent paraffin used for commercial wax paper would combine the quality of keeping bakery goods fresh with the display value of cellophane.

Distribution of population in State. The estimated population for the State of New Mexico for the year 1930 was 423,300. A close observation of the population centers shows them to be scattered over a wide range of territory. The largest city, Albuquerque, has approximately 26,000 citizens. The next sites, according to the 1930 count, are three in number, Santa Fe, Roswell, and Clovis. The remaining population including rural districts do not number over eight thousand people.

The investigation of fresh-water lakes with respect to fish and other aquatic life had its beginning in Europe in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Probably the only man who may be considered to be the founder of the science of limnology was F. A. Forel, of the University of Lausanne Switzerland. Professor Forel’s work was the start of a rapidly developing branch of study, not only in Europe, but also presently in North America.

At first, it was as a blur, that had shrouded a great mystery for ages and ages, until some seventy odd years ago. Then came Thomas Graham, who could not satisfy himself with merely viewing a blur as a blur. Being a scientist, he applied his mind experimentally, which the keen precision of any of the eminent astronomers using a telescope, and viewed more clearly this mist which hovered above the horizon.

Solids dissolved in a liquid produce a general decrease in the evaporation rate of the solvent. Experiments were performed, using light naphtha as the solvent and Paraffin, Japan, Carnauba, Candelilla, Ozokerite, Montan, and Bees waxes as solutes. These waxes were selected since they are the waxes most commonly used in the manufacture of floor waxes and work of the kind presented in this thesis finds its greatest application in connection with that industry.
