Applications For The Quasi-Atomic Orbital And Constrained Density Functional Theory Methods On Catalytic Reactions, Alvaro David Loaiza Orduz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Selective activation of C–O, C–H, and C–C bonds underpins biomass upgrading, alkane functionalization, and CO₂ conversion. Despite their importance, the electronic factors governing catalytic performance remain incompletely understood, and many industrial processes still rely on empirical trends or material-specific observations. This dissertation addresses this gap by applying density functional theory (DFT), thermodynamic decomposition, and electronic-structure analysis to identify unifying principles of reactivity across transition-metal phosphides, vanadate oxides, copper-based electrocatalysts, and mixed IrO₂–RuO₂ layers. This work examines how charge transfer, orbital localization, and ligand-induced perturbations control reaction pathways in diverse catalytic systems. C–O bond scission in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) and methanol was …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In the last decade, photoredox catalysis has become a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry. It relies on the ability of catalytic systems that facilitate energy-demanding redox reactions thanks to photoinduced electron transfer processes. This dissertation focuses on the computational investigation of the redox properties of transition metal photoredox catalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The research systematically explores the effects of altering redox-active ligands on the thermodynamics of electron transfer events in the photoredox cycle. The electronic structure changes throughout oxidative and reductive quenching cycles are analyzed, with a particular focus on Cu(I) complexes. Through computational techniques, insights into …

Elucidating The Effect Of Surface Modifications On Nanomaterial Function, Nicholas Langer
Dissertations (1934 -)
Nanoparticles (NPs) are an exciting class of materials with unique properties that inspire their use in sensing, catalysis, optoelectronic devices, and more. NPs are frequently coated in organic molecules, termed ligands, to increase their stability, but ligands also influence NP catalytic activity and their interactions with neighboring molecules. To fully realize the potential of nanomaterials as key components in novel complex systems, a more nuanced understanding of the relationships between NPs, ligands, and their surrounding microenvironment is critical. After a brief review of the NP field in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 begins the investigation of structure-function relationships with a cross-class …

Mechanistic Investigation Of C—C Bond Activation Of Phosphaalkynes With Pt(0) Complexes, Roberto M. Escobar, Abdurrahman C. Ateşin, Christian Müller, William D. Jones, Tülay Ateşin
Research Symposium
Carbon–carbon (C–C) bond activation has gained increased attention as a direct method for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inaccessibility of the C–C bonds, however, activation of C–C bonds by homogeneous transition-metal catalysts under mild homogeneous conditions is still a challenge. Most of the systems in which the activation occurs either have aromatization or relief of ring strain as the primary driving force. The activation of unstrained C–C bonds of phosphaalkynes does not have this advantage. This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate Pt(0)-mediated C–CP bond activation mechanisms in phosphaalkynes. Investigating the …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porphyrins are a group of heterocyclic macrocycles that play crucial roles in various biological processes such as electron transfer, catalysis, and sensing. Hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood of mammals, and chlorophyll, which drives photosynthesis in plants and algae, are both porphyrins. The ability of porphyrins to bind metal ions and their unique electronic and photophysical properties make them an excellent platform for designing functional materials for various applications, often drawing inspiration from their function in nature. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials that have been extensively studied in recent years due to their high surface …

Bimetallic Compound Catalysts With Multiple Active Centers For Accelerated Polysulfide Conversion In Li-S Batteries, Wu-Xing Hua, Jing-Yi Xia, Zhong-Hao Hu, Huan Li, Wei Lv, Quan-Hong Yang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are hindered mainly by the low sulfur utilization and severe capacity fading derived from the polysulfide shuttling. Catalysis is an effective remedy to those problems by promoting the conversion of polysulfides to reduce their accumulation in the electrolyte, which needs the catalyst to have efficient adsorption ability to soluble polysulfides and high activity for their conversion. In this work, we have proposed a bimetallic compound of NiCo2S4 anchored onto sulfur-doped graphene (NCS@SG) to fabricate a catalytic interlayer for Li-S batteries. Compared to CoS, the NiCo2S4 demonstrated much higher …

Nitrite, a widespread raw material, is harmful to human health for long-term consumption. At present, the detection methods of nitrite mainly include chemical analysis, fluorescence, ultraviolet spectrophotometry and chromatography. These methods have ideal sensitivity and selectivity, but also have some characteristics: cumbersome operation, expensive equipment and professional personnel. Therefore, the development of a simple and sensitive nitrite assay is of great significance. In this paper, the Au/rGO/FeOOH composite materials, which revealed good synergistic catalytic performance among the three elements in the composite, were prepared by simple hydrothermal method and reduction method for the first time with large specific surface area …

Converting alkanes to other, more chemically and economically valuable molecules requires catalysts that can survive elevated temperatures and highly reducing environments. These environments can cause many metal-nanoparticle based catalysts to sinter rapidly, causing a loss of activity. They must also tolerate the coke formation, as well, since coke can restrict access to active sites by gas phase molecules, thus lowering catalytic activity. While there are routes to improve both the sinter and coke resistance of catalysts, an alternative strategy is to develop a protocol for regenerating the activity of the catalyst in question when coke formation or sintering becomes problematic. …

In Situ Monitoring Of Catalytic Molecular Transformations On Noble Metal Nanocatalysts Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Hui Wang, Qingfeng Zhang, Esteban Villarreal, Hao Jing, Kexun Chen
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Noble metal nanoparticles have long been of tremendous interest in the nanophotonics and nanocatalysis communities owing to their intriguing size- and shape-dependent plasmonic and catalytic properties. The combination of tunable plasmon resonances with superior catalytic activities on the same noble metal nanoparticle, however, has long been challenging because the research on nanoplasmonics and nanocatalysis deals with nanoparticles in two drastically different size regimes. While tunable plasmon resonances are a unique feature of metallic nanoparticles in the sub-wavelength size regime, heterogeneous catalysis requires the use of substrate-supported sub-5 nm nanoparticulate catalysts. In this mini-review article, we share with the readers several …

Ionic tetrapodal ligands with colinear coordinating arms are very effective for designing hybrid porous materials with unusual structure and properties. The novelty of this research work lies in the utilization of a unique borate ligand that leads to charge-separated MOF structure with tailor designed properties. Borate ligands being tetrahedral afford 3D materials and the negative charge of borate anion can compensate the positive charge of metal ion in the framework. The borate ligands designed in this research consists of quaternary ammonium cation and anionic borate with four pyridine arms. These ligands upon coordination with Cu(I), Cu(II), Ag(I) and Co(II) metal …

Nontraditional Hydrogen Bonding In Asymmetric Lewis Acid Catalysis, Brandon Vernier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the field of asymmetric induction, there is a shift from the synthesis of reaction
specific chiral auxiliaries towards a broader mechanistic approach. Our approach is to
develop a theory of asymmetric catalyst design from first principles. The Diels-Alder
reaction of 2-methacrolein and 1,3-cyclopentadiene in the presence of 15 mole % lmenthoxy
aluminum dichloride, reported by Koga, achieved the (S)-exo-Diels-Alder
cycloadduct with 72% ee (0% ee Endo for acrolein). The dramatic change from 72% to 0%
ee is a significant fact that has been overlooked in practical organic synthesis.
In the first phase of this work, the conformational landscape of …

CuxPd1-xO forms a homogeneous solid solution over the wide range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.725 in which compositional variation can be correlated with structural and chemical environmental changes. After a small lag at low Cu2+ concentrations, where the lattice cell parameters are pinned to that of the pure PdO structure, CuxPd1-xO lattice parameters follow Vegard’s law in which the cell volume decreases linearly with x, indicating a homogenous solution in which Cu2+ randomly replaces the larger Pd2+ cation. The crystal structure also undergoes an increase in the c/a …
Laser Synthesis Of Nanomaterials Incorporated Within High Surface Area Materials: Applications For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Water Treatment, And Photothermal Energy Conversion, Julian A. Bobb
Theses and Dissertations
Chemical methods are generally used for the synthesis of active nanoparticles (metals, semi-metals, metal oxides, and etc) supported on high surface area materials. Chemical methods involve using strong solvents, harmful gases (H2 & CO), and high temperature techniques such as high boiling solvents, calcination and pyrolysis. The main drawbacks of using this approach, is the prevalence of chemical agents on nanomaterials which tends to negate its applications. Alternatively, photochemical and photothermal methods are widely being considered for the synthesis and design of nanomaterials.
For these studies, the active nanomaterials incorporated within high surface area materials were prepared by the …

Glassy carbon (GC) electrode is intended to be modified with nickel oxide (NiOx) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in the anodic reaction of water electrolysis. NiOx deposition time is optimized and a 5 min was enough to attain the maximum activity. A further modification of the catalyst with MWCNTs could greatly enhance its stability during continuous electrolysis. As an outcome, an energy amount of 21.7 kWh/KgO2 is minimized. Several electrochemical and materials characterization setups will be utilized to test the catalyst activity and to know its geometry and structure.
The Investigation Of Oxidative Addition Reactions Of Metal Complexes In Cross-Coupling Catalytic Cycles Based On A Unique Methodology Of Coupled Ion/Ion-Ion/Molecule Reactions, Mariah L. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Popular catalytic cycles, such as the Heck, Suzuki, and Negishi, utilize metal centers that oscillate between two oxidation states (II/0) during the three main steps of catalysis: reductive elimination, oxidative addition, and transmetallation. There has been a push to use less toxic, cheaper metal centers in catalytic cycles, leading to interest in first-row transition metals, such as nickel and cobalt. With these metals, the cycles can potentially pass through the +1 oxidation state, which acts as reactive intermediates, undergoing oxidative additions to form products, potentially with radical characteristics. The oxidative addition steps of catalytic cycles are critical to determining overall …

In the field of chemistry there is a growing demand for small molecule organocatalysts such as amino acids, more specifically proline and its analogues, which could catalyze various key chemical reactions in the synthesis of several biologically important molecules. Even though natural proline is reported to catalyze various chemical reactions, its use as organocatalyst is limited mainly due to the solubility issues in the reaction media and high catalyst loadings, which is not very ideal for bulk scale manufacturing. To address these limitations we planned to develop unnatural analogues of proline that could catalyze the reactions with lower catalyst loadings …

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel / energy carrier and is an essential building block for many industrial and agricultural processes. Rising energy demands have ignited interest in the development of carbon-free and carbon neutral energy sources. In this context, hydrogen is an attractive candidate—being energy-dense, carbon-free—and easily accessible through a two-electron reduction of water. Accordingly, many electrochemical homogeneous catalyst systems have been studied, with a focus on understanding the mechanism of hydrogen evolution proceeding through metal-hydride intermediates. However, there has been a renaissance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst design, with many groups implicating ligand redox non-innocence as a …

Rambling Between "Zhong Yong" And "Catalysis", Zi-Dong Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
“Zhong Yong” represents a traditional Chinese wisdom, which was first proposed by Confucius and continuously richened by his followers. “Zhong Yong” pursues the balances among all kinds of contradictions, and insists that neither “too much” nor “not enough” is good. For a successful catalyst, on which the adsorption of reactants must be not so strong and not so weak either. On this point of view, there are the same pursuits for “Zhong Yong” and catalysis. In this paper, the author starts his story with a conversation between Confucius and his student, followed by 3 interesting stories happening in the ancient …

Brust–Schiffrin reduction of Pd and Pt precursors in the presence of resorcinarene amine surfactant led to the formation of substantially Pt rich, PdPt bimetallic nanoparticles of a V-shape or variants on the V-shape. New insights into this reaction are provided on the basis of reversed Brust–Schiffrin syntheses, DLS, UV-vis, and NMR analysis. Based on our experiments we conclude that the resorcinarene amine surfactant is part of the inverse micelle formed from TOABr and it also selectively complexes with the Pd salts prior to their reduction. Remarkably, the composition of the bipodal nanoparticles could be varied substantially by varying the reaction …

Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Of Nanostructured Cerium Oxide, Neil J. Lawrence
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO2-x where x is 0 to 0.5) has been one of the most widely used heterogeneous catalysts particularly in three way catalytic converters. Most of the catalytic traits can be attributed to two properties of ceria: first, the high mobility and storage capacity of oxygen within the lattice; second, the ease with which cerium changes between Ce3+ and Ce4+ states. These properties, combined with the abundance of cerium on earth, make ceria a low-cost highly effective alternative to noble metal catalysts. Recent research has been focused on the nanoscale properties of ceria.
The effect …
