Roaming Transition States And Highly Accurate Thermochemistry: A Pepico Study Of Two Small Combustion Systems, Kyle John Covert

Two small combustion systems, methyl hydroperoxide (CH3OOH) and 2-propanol ((CH3)2CHOH), were studied using imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy (iPEPICO), which combines photoelectron spectroscopy and photoionization mass spectrometry to detect coincident photoelectron-photoion pairs. In the photon energy range of 11.4–14.0 eV, energy selected CH3OOH+ ions dissociate into CH2OOH+, HCO+, CH3+, and H3O+ ions. The lowest-energy dissociation channel is the formation of the cation of the smallest “QOOH” radical, CH2OOH+. A statistical rate model fitted to the …

The object of this dissertation was to use a computational approach to predict and understand new psychoactive substances (NPS) to develop a database for state and federal crime. The primary scope of the dissertation was to better understand the interactions that take place between new psychoactive substances and their corresponding receptors. Through analysis of the interactions between the amino acids within the receptors and the NPS an understanding into the pharmacology and toxicology of these drugs can be gained. Barite (BaSO4) growth on the (001) surface was studied under solutions of alkali metal chloride salts (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, RbCl and CsCl) as a function of saturation index and ionic strength of the salts at 108 C. When LiCl was used as the background electrolyte, growth hillocks on the barite surface consisted of both [010] steps and <120> steps at ionic strengths of 0.05 and 0.1 M, but [010] steps were not observed at lower ionic strength. In NaCl solutions, hillocks displayed greater prominence of the [010] steps when compared with LiCl. From the saturation state dependent studies, it was found …

Platinum-based anticancer drugs, such as cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin, have been approved for clinical use worldwide for decades. Despite their enormous success, their widespread application is hindered by either cross-resistance or toxic side effects, including nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. The need to overcome these drawbacks has stimulated the search for new platinum-based drugs.

This dissertation will start with the accidental discovery of cisplatin, followed by an introduction of other platinum-based anticancer agents, including the action mechanism, general structures, and development history. The synthesis of N-heterocycle functionalized benzophenone-type monomers and their incorporation into poly(arylene ether ketone)s were explored. Two benzophenone derivatives, 2,4-difluorobenzophenone and 3,5-difluorobenzophenone, were successfully functionalized with a carbazole group, via a copper-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction. Structural characterization was provided by NMR spectroscopy, GC/MS, and elemental analysis. The monomers were covalently incorporated, at various molar ratios, into poly(arylene ether) systems by copolymerization with 4,4’-difluorodiphenylsulfone (DPS) and 4,4’-dihydroxydiphenyl ether (DPE), as well as 4,4’-difluorotriphenylphosphine oxide (dFTPPO) and DPE, via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) chemistry. ASTM D3241 (Standard Test Method for Thermal Oxidation Stability of Aviation Turbine Fuels) measures the thermal oxidative stability of jet fuels under elevated temperature and pressure conditions. When jet fuels fail ASTM D3241, either at the refinery or in the distribution system, there can be supply disruptions and financial losses. Understanding the causes of poor thermal oxidative stability in jet fuels could help prevent or mitigate issues. In order to develop a deeper understanding of the molecular precursors that lead to ASTM D3241 failures, a number of analytical methodologies and data treatment techniques have been developed, applied, and reported here. …

Fullerene (C60) has generated much scientific interest since its discovery due to its novel optical, electronic, and physical properties. Fullerene has been shown to be an excellent electron acceptor and as a result is the acceptor of choice in organic photovoltaics. Porphyrins are excellent electron-donors due to their stability, low ionization potential, and excellent light absorption properties. As a result, fullerene-porphyrin dyads form unique donor-acceptor systems that can be useful for a variety of photoactive applications. The eastern peninsula of Fort Hood Military Installation is underlain by a complex karst spring network. These springs are a primary water source in a protected habitat for endangered songbirds, which has only recently begun to be fully investigated. These Fredericksburg Group springs express both epigenetic and hypogenetic karst signatures. The study area is part of a paleo reef trend, a hydraulically disconnected segment of the northern section of the Edwards Aquifer. Past changes in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (PCO2) have had a major impact on earth system dynamics; yet, reconstructing secular trends of past PCO2 remains a prevalent challenge in paleoclimate studies. The current long-term PCO2reconstructions rely largely on the compilation of many different proxies, often with discrepancies among proxies, particularly for periods older than 100 million years (Ma). Here, we reconstructed Phanerozoic PCO2 from a single proxy: the stable carbon isotopic fractionation associated with photosynthesis (Ɛp) that increases as PCO2 increases. Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lipid droplets (LDs) in the liver. Here, we explore the composition of hepatic LDs in a rat model of AFLD. Five to seven weeks of alcohol consumption led to significant increases in hepatic triglyceride mass, along with increases in LD number and size. Additionally, hepatic LDs from rats with early alcoholic liver injury show a decreased ratio of surface phosphatidylcholine (PC) to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). This occurred in parallel with an increase in the LD association of perilipin 2, a prominent LD protein. To determine if changes to the …

Surface functionalization of nanodiamonds (NDs) is still challenging due to the diversity of functional groups on the ND surfaces. Here, we demonstrate a simple protocol for the multifunctional surface modification of NDs by using mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coating. In addition, the functional layer of PDA on NDs could serve as a reducing agent to synthesize and stabilize metal nanoparticles. Dopamine (DA) can self-polymerize and spontaneously form PDA layers on ND surfaces if the NDs and dopamine are simply mixed together.
