Statement of the problem. This study was carried out to determine: (1) what advantages a laboratory-centered general chemistry course might have over the conventional laboratory course, and (2) whether improved understanding of laboratory work leads to better learning of chemistry. The four following questions were raised in connection with the study or this problem:
- What is the need for a laboratory-centered course?
- What has been done in the past to meet this need?
- Can students learn chemistry more effectively in a laboratory-centered course as compared to the conventional course?

In order to give the laboratory-centered course a trial run and to compare it with a lecture-centered course it seemed necessary to the author that both courses should be taught and compared. The latter gave rise to the following hypotheses:
- Students in a laboratory-centered general chemistry course show more favorable attitudes toward chemistry than do students in a lecture-centered course.
- Students in a laboratory-centered course show as good a subject-matter mastery as students in a lecture-centered course.

This is a study of the heat capacity substances at high temperatures at determined by means of drop-calorimetry. The present chemical and physical methods for the determination of ethyl alcohol are all subject to systematic errors derived from any of a number of interfacing substances usually present in solution with the ethanol. Some of the most popular methods are slow and tedious and require a good deal of skill and technique to perform. The dichromate (2), pycnometer and refractometer methods are three such methods. The interfering substances most often present in industrial and food products are fusel oils and acetaldehyde. These substances interfere in the three methods just mentioned. The plant pigments constitute a fascinating group of compounds whose constitution has only recently been partially clarified. Roughly speaking, there are two main groups of pigment: the plastids, associated with the protoplasmic structure of plants, and the anthocyanins, generally found in solution in the cell sap. The term “anthocyanin” is derived from the Greek, “antho” signifying flower and “cyan” meaning blue, and was introduced by the botanist Marquart in 1835 to designate the blue pigments of flowers. It has since been extended to include all of the pigments of this group, the anthocyanin pigments being responsible for the innumerable shades …

A study of the electrolytic behavior of this group of compounds was undertaken to gain some knowledge of a little known type of reaction of these compounds. The study was made, not so much in view of developing new uses for these compounds, as to gain a better understanding of their behavior under various conditions. Another reason for this investigation is the fact that chemical reduction by the usual methods is inconvenient. With this fact in mind, the inherent convenience of electrolytic methods made the study of the electrolytic behavior of the nitroparrffins worthy of investigation.

In this investigation the ortho substituted phenols used were o-cresol, o-chlorophenol, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate, 8-hydroxyquinoline, o-cyclohexyl phenol, o-octyl phenol, and o-nitrophenol. One member of the group, o-benzylphenol, was not obtainable at the time of the investigation. The bactericidal, germicidal and fungicidal activities of the iodinated ortho substituted phenols were not determined in this investigation due to lack of time. In addition, the investigator has not had experience in bacteriology or mycology and feels that such an investigation should be carried out by someone with experience in that field.

Since approximately two-thirds (12) of the energy from the fuel in automobile engines is converted to unusable heat, it is necessary that a method of cooling the engines be provided. In most present-day engines of this type, an indirect method is utilized, namely, the transfer of heat to a liquid and thence from the liquid to the surrounding air by means of radiators Water is universally used for the coolant liquid because of its availability and high heat transfer properties. Sulfamic acid at one time had no particular value, and very little was known about the physical and chemical properties of this acid. At the present time , however, this acid is a commercial product of considerable importance and extensive investigation has been conducted to discover its many chemical properties. A very interesting group of compounds derived from sulfamates are the aldehyde addition products. The aldehyde derivatives of calcium sulfamate were studied and had a particular interest because of their greater stability, especially in the isolated, solid form. Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Also, no know effort has been made to assemble the chemistry of the quinoxalines into one paper for ready reference. This work is a study of the analytical applications of the chromatographic method, particularly as applied to inorganic qualitative analysis. It is divided into four parts as follows: (a) The main part of the work is a search of the common laboratory reagents, likely to be found in any beginning qualitative analysis laboratory, with the purpose of finding the best reagents for developing an invisible chromatogram on an adsoption column of activated alumina. A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent

This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. "There is at the present time no commercially developed source of the metal rhenium in the United States. Since this metal is known to exist in molybdenite, it was felt that a study of the products of the metallurgical processing of this mineral might reveal a source of rhenium that could e developed. The Climax Molybdenum Co. provided a number of samples from their smelter at Langloth, Pennsylvania. Although an improved method for the quantitative estimation of rhenium was recently published, its accuracy was not high and the procedure exacting and time-consuming.
