Tests Of An Rf Dipole Crabbing Cavity For An Electron-Ion Collider, A. Castilla, J. R. Delayen
Physics Faculty Publications
On the scheme of developing a medium energy electron-ion collider (MEIC) at Jefferson Lab, we have designed a compact superconducting rf dipole cavity at 750 MHz to crab both electron and ion bunches and increase luminosities at the interaction points (IP) of the machine. Following the design optimization and characterization of the electromagnetic properties such as peak surface fields and shunt impedance, along with field nonuniformities, multipole components content, higher order modes (HOM) and multipacting, a prototype cavity was built by Niowave Inc. The 750 MHz prototype crab cavity has been tested at 4 K and is ready for re-testing …

Geometry Effects On Multipole Components And Beam Optics In High-Velocity Multi-Spoke Cavities, C. S. Hopper, K. Deitrick, J. R. Delayen
Physics Faculty Publications
Velocity-of-light, multi-spoke cavities are being proposed to accelerate electrons in a compact light-source [1]. There are strict requirements on the beam quality which require that the linac have only small non-uniformities in the accelerating field. Beam dynamics simulations have uncovered varying levels of focusing and defocusing in the proposed cavities, which is dependent on the geometry of the spoke in the vicinity of the beam path. Here we present results for the influence different spoke geometries have on the multipole components of the accelerating field and how these components, in turn, impact the simulated beam properties.

The first high-statistics cross sections for the reactions ɣp → K*+Ʌ and ɣp → K*+Σº were measured using the CLAS detector at photon energies between threshold and 3.9 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Differential cross sections are presented over the full range of the center-of-mass angles, and then fitted to Legendre polynomials to extract the total cross section. Results for the K*+Ʌ final state are compared with two different calculations in an isobar and a Regge model, respectively. Theoretical calculations significantly underestimate the K*+Ʌ total cross sections between 2.1 and 2.6 GeV, but are in better agreement …

Beam asymmetries for the reactions ˠp -> pπ0 and ˠp -> nπ+have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged, linearly polarized photon beam with energies from 1.102-1.862 GeV. A Fourier moment technique for extracting beam asymmetries from experimental data is described. The results reported here possess greater precision and finer energy resolution than previous measurements. Our data for both pion reactions appear to favor the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina scattering analyses over the older Mainz MAID predictions. After incorporating the present set of beam asymmetries into the world database, exploratory fits made with …

Jet-medium interactions are studied via a multihadron correlation technique ( called "2 + 1"), where a pair of back-to-back hadron triggers with large transverse momentum is used as a proxy for a di-jet. This work extends the previous analysis for nearly symmetric trigger pairs with the highest momentum threshold of trigger hadron of 5 GeV/c with the new calorimeter-based triggers with energy thresholds of up to 10 GeV and above. The distributions of associated hadrons are studied in terms of correlation shapes and per-trigger yields on each trigger side. In contrast with di-hadron correlation results with single triggers, the associated …

Background: The discrepancy between proton electromagnetic form factors extracted using unpolarized and polarized scattering data is believed to be a consequence of two-photon exchange (TPE) effects. However, the calculations of TPE corrections have significant model dependence, and there is limited direct experimental evidence for such corrections.
Purpose: The TPE contributions depend on the sign of the lepton charge in e±p scattering, but the luminosities of secondary positron beams limited past measurement at large scattering angles, where the TPE effects are believe to be most significant. We present the results of a new experimental technique for making direct e±p comparisons, which …

Nuclear transparency, Tp(A), is a measure of the average probability for a struck proton to escape the nucleus without significant re-interaction. Previously, nuclear transparencies were extracted for quasi-elastic A(e,e′p) knockout of protons with momentum below the Fermi momentum, where the spectral functions are well known. In this Letter we extract a novel observable, the transparency ratio, Tp(A)/Tp(12C), for knockout of high-missing-momentum protons from the breakup of short-range correlated pairs (2N-SRC) in Al, Fe and Pb nuclei relative to C. The ratios were measured at momentum transfer Q2 ⩾1.5(GeV/c)2 and x …

The exclusive electroproduction of π + above the resonance region was studied using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of CLAS, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the γ * p → nπ + process in 140 (Q 2, x B , t) bins: 0.16 < x B < 0.58, 1.6 GeV2 < Q 2 < 4.5 GeV2 and 0.1 GeV2 < −t < 5.3 GeV2. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a …

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) will be a next-generation facility for the study of the strong interaction (QCD). JLab's MEIC is designed for high luminosities of up to 10³⁴ cm-² s-¹. This is achieved in part due to an aggressively small beta-star, which imposes stringent requirements on the collider rings' dynamical properties. Additionally, one of the unique features of MEIC is a full-acceptance detector with a dedicated, small-angle, high-resolution detection system, capable of covering a wide range of momenta (and charge-to-mass ratios) with respect to the original ion beam to enable access to new physics. The detector …

We describe our method for deriving the nuclear electromagnetic charge and current operators in chiral perturbation theory, based on time-ordered perturbation theory. We then discuss possible strategies for fixing the relevant low-energy constants, from the magnetic moments of the deuteron and of the trinucleons, and from the radiative np capture cross sections, and identify a scheme which, partly relying on Δ resonance saturation, leads to a reasonable pattern of convergence of the chiral expansion.
Verification Of Information Flow Security In Cyber-Physical Systems, Rav Akella
Verification Of Information Flow Security In Cyber-Physical Systems, Rav Akella
Doctoral Dissertations
"With a growing number of real-world applications that are dependent on computation, securing the information space has become a challenge. The security of information in such applications is often jeopardized by software and hardware failures, intervention of human subjects such as attackers, incorrect design specification and implementation, other social and natural causes. Since these applications are very diverse, often cutting across disciplines a generic approach to detect and mitigate these issues is missing. This dissertation addresses the fundamental problem of verifying information security in a class of real world applications of computation, the Cyber-physical systems (CPSs). One of the motivations …

"The La₁₋ₓSrₓMn1-yByO₃ perovskite systems where B represents a 3d transition metal such as Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, are of significant interest due to their large magnetoresistance, and electronic transport properties that change significantly, depending on values of x and which transition metal used. Their applications in technology include cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells, resistance random access memory and catalysis. At certain doping concentrations on the B-site, metal-to-semiconductor or metal-to-insulator transitions coupled with colossal magnetoresistance occur, decreasing the resistivity (up to six orders of magnitude) upon the application of an external magnetic field. …
Quantum Phase Transitions In Disordered Magnets, David Nozadze
Quantum Phase Transitions In Disordered Magnets, David Nozadze
Doctoral Dissertations
"We study the effects of quenched weak disorder on quantum phase transitions in disordered magnets. The presence of disorder in the system can lead to a variety of exotic phenomena, e.g., the smearing of transitions or quantum Griffiths singularities. Phase transitions are smeared if individual spatial regions can order independently of the bulk system. In paper I, we study smeared quantum phase transitions in binary alloys A₁₋ₓBₓ that are tuned by changing the composition x. We show that in this case the ordered phase is extended over all compositions x < 1. We also study the composition dependence of observables. In paper II, we investigate the influence of spatial disorder correlations on smeared phase transitions. As an experimental example, we demonstrate in paper III, that the composition-driven ferromagnetic-toparamagnetic quantum phase transition in Sr₁₋ₓCaₓ RuO₃ is smeared. When individual spatial regions cannot order but fluctuate slowly, the phase transition is characterized by strong singularities in the quantum Griffiths phase. In paper IV, we develop a theory of the quantum Griffiths phases in disordered ferromagnetic metals. We show that the quantum Griffiths singularities are stronger than the usual power-law quantum Griffiths singularities in insulating magnets. In paper V, we present an efficient numerical method for studying quantum phase transitions in disordered systems with O(N) order parameter symmetry in the large-N limit. Our algorithm solves iteratively the large-N self-consistent equations for the renormalized distances from criticality. Paper VI is devoted to the study of transport properties in the quantum Griffiths phase associated with the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition in a metal. We find unusual behavior of transport properties which is in contrast to the normal Fermi-liquid behavior"--Abstract, page v.

"The field of nanomaterials has continued to attract researchers to understand the fundamentals and to investigate potential applications in the fields of semiconductor physics, microfabrication, nanomedicine, surface sciences etc. One of the most critical aspects of the nanomaterials research is to establish synthetic protocols, which can address the underlying product requirements of reproducibility, homogenous morphology and controlled elemental composition. We have focused our research in exploring synthetic routes for the synthesis of superconducting and semiconducting nanomaterials and analyze their structure--property relationship through detailed characterizations. The first part of dissertation is focused on the synthesis of superconducting FeSe nanostructures using catalyst …

Isocyanate-Derived Organic Aerogels: Polyurethanes, Polyureas, Polyamides And Polyimides, Chakkaravarthy Chidambareswarapattar
Doctoral Dissertations
"Aerogels are 3D assemblies of nanoparticles with high open porosity and high surface area, and are pursued for their low density, low thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant and high acoustic attenuation. The foundation for those exceptional properties is their complex hierarchical solid framework (agglomerates of porous, fractal secondary nanoparticles). On the down side, however, aerogels are also fragile materials. The mechanical strength of silica aerogels has been improved by crosslinking the framework with organic polymers. The crosslinking polymer has been assumed to form a conformal coating on the surface of the skeletal framework bridging covalently the elementary building blocks. However, …

Palynology Of Acid-Saline Lakes Of Western Australiabiostratigraphy And Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction, Carlos A. Sanchez Botero
Doctoral Dissertations
"Lakes are excellent repositories of fossils and sedimentary features that provide clues to past climatic and geologic events. Sediments from four cores drilled in Lake Aerodrome (LA1-09, LA2-09) and Lake Brown (LB1-09, LB2-09), two of the hundreds of ephemeral lakes in southern Western Australia, were analyzed for their palynological contents to understand the geologic and climatic evolution of the depositional basin. Palynofacies assemblages defined by statistical analyses of dispersed organic matter suggested differences in the depositional conditions and probable correlations between Lake Aerodrome cores. Detailed identifications and quantification of organic-walled microfossils yielded two palynomorph assemblages that reflect a climatic turnover: …

"In this dissertation, we investigate location based services in wireless ad hoc networks from four different aspects - i) location privacy in wireless sensor networks (privacy), ii) end-to-end secure communication in randomly deployed wireless sensor networks (security), iii) quality versus latency trade-off in content retrieval under ad hoc node mobility (performance) and iv) location clustering based Sybil attack detection in vehicular ad hoc networks (trust). The first contribution of this dissertation is in addressing location privacy in wireless sensor networks. We propose a non-cooperative sensor localization algorithm showing how an external entity can stealthily invade into the location privacy of …

Polybenzoxazine Aerogels: Synthesis, Characterization, Conversion To Porous Carbons, And Energetic Composites, Shruti Mahadik-Khanolkar
Doctoral Dissertations
"Aerogels are nanoporous, low-density bulk objects, consisting of three-dimensional assemblies of nanoparticle. Structured similarly, polymeric aerogels are emerging as a mechanically strong alternative to traditional silica aerogels, which are fragile. Amongst polymeric aerogels, those based on polybenzoxazine (PBO - a type of phenolic resin), are extremely robust and comprise an economic alternative to resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels, also a class of phenolic resins, as the main source of carbon aerogels. The drawback of the PBO chemistry has been the long (days) processing time at high-temperatures (>130 ºC). Herewith, we have developed an energy- and time-efficient process to PBO aerogels by inducing …

Transport In Correlated And Uncorrelated Random Media, With Applications To Molecularly Doped Polymers, Nilanka Praveena Gurusinghe
Doctoral Dissertations
"The commonly observed Poole-Frenkel field dependence; of the mobility of photo-injected charges in molecularly-doped polymers has been shown to arise from the spatially-correlated, Gaussian energy distribution of transport sites encountered by charges moving through the material. Experimental current-time transients obtained for molecularly-doped polymers exhibit universality with respect to electric field and a metal-insulator-like transition from non-dispersive to dispersive transport, features usually identified with multiple trapping models that assume an uncorrelated exponential distribution of trap energies. For materials that exhibit both sets of features the possibility arises that both kinds of disorder coexist. We study here, analytically and numerically, transport in …

Study Of Artificially Disordered Optical Fibers, Herath Mudiyanselage Sumudu Rasika Kumari Herath
Doctoral Dissertations
"Light transmission through photo-sensitive multi-mode fibers (MMF) with controlled volume disorder is investigated. Experiment shows that a segment of disordered MMF as short as 10 cm is sufficient to distribute power uniformly over all co-propagating modes and the intensity at the output surface of the fiber follows the Rayleigh negative exponential function. To explain the experimental findings, a comprehensive theoretical model is developed with three main results. First, statistical properties of all components of the dielectric tensor are obtained and analyzed in the framework a microscopical model of photo-sensitivity in a germano-silicate glasses. Secondly, it is shown that induced birefringence …

"Online social networks, such as Facebook and Google+, have been emerging as a new communication service for users to stay in touch and share information with family members and friends over the Internet. Since the users are generating huge amounts of data on social network sites, an interesting question is how to mine this enormous amount of data to retrieve useful information. Along this direction, social network analysis has emerged as an important tool for many business intelligence applications such as identifying potential customers and promoting items based on their interests. In particular, since users are often interested to make …
Refining The Characterization Of Projective Graphs, Perry K. Iverson
Refining The Characterization Of Projective Graphs, Perry K. Iverson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Archdeacon showed that the class of graphs embeddable in the projective plane is characterized by a set of 35 excluded minors. Robertson, Seymour and Thomas in an unpublished result found the excluded minors for the class of k-connected graphs embeddable on the projective plane for k = 1,2,3. We give a short proof of that result and then determine the excluded minors for the class of internally 4-connected projective graphs. Hall showed that a 3-connected graph diff_x000B_erent from K5 is planar if and only if it has K3,3 as a minor. We provide two analogous results for projective graphs. For …
Decade-Scale Nutrient Enrichment Effects On Wetland Plant Community Structure, Function, And Stability, Sean A. Graham
Decade-Scale Nutrient Enrichment Effects On Wetland Plant Community Structure, Function, And Stability, Sean A. Graham
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Human activities have increased the supply of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to coastal waters worldwide, threatening coastal wetlands with excess nutrient loading and subsequent eutrophication. In this dissertation, I present results from two decade-scale fertilization experiments in a Sagittaria lancifolia dominated oligohaline marsh that examined the species-, community-, and ecosystem-level effects of nutrient enrichment. My objectives were to determine (1) which nutrient limits primary production, (2) how increased supply of the limiting nutrient affects plant community structure and function, both above- and belowground, and (3) whether nutrient over-enrichment compromises ecosystem stability. Overall, significant changes in plant growth occurred with …
Recovery Of Understory Bird Movement In Post-Pasture Amazonia, Luke L. Powell
Recovery Of Understory Bird Movement In Post-Pasture Amazonia, Luke L. Powell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
I sought to understand how forest fragmentation and secondary growth affect avian movement at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) near Manaus, Brazil. When deforested areas are abandoned, secondary forests regenerate, allowing rainforest animals to gradually recovery their ability to use formerly inhospitable habitat. My colleagues and I captured 2773 understory birds of ten foraging guilds along the edges of primary forest fragments and variable secondary forest. Age of secondary forest along edges was the most important variable driving capture rates on primary/secondary edges. Mean recovery to pre-isolation capture rates was 26 years after abandonment, but terrestrial insectivores …
Phase Behavior Of Silica-Polypeptide Hybrid Particles Immersed In Cholesteric Liquid Crystals, Melissa Elizabeth Collins
Phase Behavior Of Silica-Polypeptide Hybrid Particles Immersed In Cholesteric Liquid Crystals, Melissa Elizabeth Collins
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Silica-polypeptide hybrid particles are core-shell colloids. Established synthetic methods ensure uniformly sized cores and provide the ability to have magnetic or fluorescent inclusions. The polypeptide shell is highly functional in its ability to respond to stimuli through changes in shape and formation of ordered phases above certain concentrations or temperatures. This research explores the interactions of hybrid particles mixed with polypeptides dispersed in solution. Depletion theory, which considers mainly entropic interactions between particles, can be used to explain the phase behavior of colloids. Due to the chemical similarities between the polypeptides attached to the surface and those free in solution, …
Effects Of Stress And Water Saturation On Seismic Velocity And Attenuation In Near Surface Sediments, James Michael Crane
Effects Of Stress And Water Saturation On Seismic Velocity And Attenuation In Near Surface Sediments, James Michael Crane
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Seismic investigation in the near-surface is complicated by highly attenuating media, large interparticle stresses, and variable water saturation, so new tools and methodology are necessary to understand the relationships between velocity, attenuation, and physical properties of the propagating media. A new shear wave source is developed for investigation of gas-charged, organic-rich sediments because compressional waves are highly attenuated and currently available sources are inadequate. The new source compares favorably to a traditional hammer impact source, producing a signal with a broader-band of frequencies (30-100Hz cf. 30-60Hz) and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) equivalent to ~3 stacked hammer blows to the hammer impact …
The Development Of Capillary Electrophoresis Assays To Study Enzyme Inhibition, Sherrisse Kelly Bryant
The Development Of Capillary Electrophoresis Assays To Study Enzyme Inhibition, Sherrisse Kelly Bryant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
New methods for studying enzymes and enzyme inhibition using capillary electrophoresis (CE) were developed and applied. Because CE is a separation technique, spectral interference is minimized by separation of substrates, products, inhibitors, and sample matrix components. Two types of CE enzyme assays were explored in this dissertation research. The first assay was based on optically gated vacancy capillary electrophoresis (OGVCE) with laser-induced fluorescence detection (LIF). This approach involves periodic photobleaching of fluorescent substrates and products. The initial goal of the study was to develop an assay for adenosine deaminase (ADA). A fluorescent ADA substrate was synthesized; however, the substrate was …

Structural And Synthesis Studies Of The Pro¹⁴³ Region Skp1 In Dictyostelium Discoideum, Chamini V. Karunaratne
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In Skp1 of Dictyostelium discoideum (Dd), Pro143 is located at the N-terminus of an α-helix with four consecutive Glu residues immediately following Pro. Preceeding Pro143 is a segment of random coil. The proline residue undergoes post-translational modifications: hydroxylation and glycosylation. A cytoplasmic prolyl hydroxylase (P4H1) delivers a hydroxyl group to Pro143 and N-acetylglucosamine transferase 1 (Gnt1) transfers GlcNAc from UDP to Hyp143 of Skp1. The installation of the first GlcNAc residue in Skp1 in Dictyostelium is important for the organism to differentiate into a fruiting body to disperse spores. Depositional History Of The Trinity-Tiger Shoals Region : A Transgressed Delta Complex Of The Middle Holocene Mississippi Delta, Clint Hoyt Edrington
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Holocene Mississippi River Delta is arguably the world’s most thoroughly researched deltaic system. However, much of this research has occurred predominantly within the present-day subaerial delta, whereas comparatively little research has been attempted downdip within the offshore, more difficult-to-reach parts. This study advances our understanding of the Holocene delta by examining deltaic sediments within the Trinity-Tiger Shoals Complex region, located ~ 30 – 40 km offshore of central Louisiana. Specifically, this study addresses two questions. Which delta complex prograded into this offshore region? Do the overlying transgressive deposits reflect that predicted by the prevailing transgressive depositional systems model? To …
