A Study Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Mathematical Biology, Joseph Ferrara Jan 2013

A Study Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Mathematical Biology, Joseph Ferrara

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We first discuss some fundamental results such as equilibria, linearization, and stability of nonlinear dynamical systems arising in mathematical modeling. Next we study the dynamics in planar systems such as limit cycles, the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem, and some of its useful consequences. We then study the interaction between two and three different cell populations, and perform stability and bifurcation analysis on the systems. We also analyze the impact of immunotherapy on the tumor cell population numerically.

Performance Evaluation And Comparison Of Distributed Messaging Using Message Oriented Middleware, Naveen Mupparaju Jan 2013

Performance Evaluation And Comparison Of Distributed Messaging Using Message Oriented Middleware, Naveen Mupparaju

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Message Oriented Middleware (MOM) is an enabling technology for modern event- driven applications that are typically based on publish/subscribe communication [Eugster03]. Enterprises typically contain hundreds of applications operating in environments with diverse databases and operating systems. Integration of these applications is required to coordinate the business process. Unfortunately, this is no easy task. Enterprise Integration, according to Brosey et al. (2001), "aims to connect and combines people, processes, systems, and technologies to ensure that the right people and the right processes have the right information and the right resources at the right time"[Brosey01]. Communication between different applications can be achieved …

Exploring Run-Time Reduction In Programming Codes Via Query Optimization And Caching, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella Jan 2013

Exploring Run-Time Reduction In Programming Codes Via Query Optimization And Caching, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella

Doctoral Dissertations

"Object oriented programming languages raised the level of abstraction by supporting the explicit first class query constructs in the programming codes. These query constructs allow programmers to express operations on collections more abstractly than relying on their realization in loops or through provided libraries. Join optimization techniques from the field of database technology support efficient realizations of such language constructs. However, the problem associated with the existing techniques such as query optimization in Java Query Language (JQL) incurs run time overhead. Besides the programming languages supporting first-class query constructs, the usage of annotations has also increased in the software engineering …

The Cloning And Expression Of Histone Genes From The Archaeal Organisms Pyrococcus Furiosus And Methanobrevibacter Smithii In The Polycistronic Vector Pst44., Doha Abdullah Alqurashi Jan 2013

The Cloning And Expression Of Histone Genes From The Archaeal Organisms Pyrococcus Furiosus And Methanobrevibacter Smithii In The Polycistronic Vector Pst44., Doha Abdullah Alqurashi

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Euryarcheota branch of the Archaea contains histone proteins that are highly homologous to eukaryotic histones. Virtually all species within this group have two histone proteins (designated H1A and H2B). These proteins contain a canonical histone fold motif that stabilizes homo- and perhaps hetero-dimeric interactions. Molecular modeling calculations previously carried out in our laboratory revealed that both homo and hetero-dimers of histones from two euryarchaeal organisms are equally plausible. We have also shown through molecular modeling that inter-species hetero-dimers are structurally identical to existing solution structures archaeal histones. An interesting question that needs to be addressed is whether homo- and …

Polarization And Opinion Analysis In An Online Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally Jan 2013

Polarization And Opinion Analysis In An Online Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally

Doctoral Dissertations

"Argumentation is an important process in a collaborative decision making environment. Argumentation from a large number of stakeholders often produces a large argumentation tree. It is challenging to comprehend such an argumentation tree without intelligent analysis tools. Also, limited decision support is provided for its analysis by the existing argumentation systems. In an argumentation process, stakeholders tend to polarize on their opinions, and form polarization groups. Each group is usually led by a group leader. Polarization groups often overlap and a stakeholder is a member of multiple polarization groups. Identifying polarization groups and quantifying a stakeholder's degree of membership in …

Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski Jan 2013

Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable …

Air-Sea Dimethylsulfide (Dms) Gas Transfer In The North Atlantic: Evidence For Limited Interfacial Gas Exchange At High Wind Speed, T. G. Bell, Warren J. De Bruyn, S. D. Miller, B. Ward, K. Christensen, E. S. Saltzman Jan 2013

Air-Sea Dimethylsulfide (Dms) Gas Transfer In The North Atlantic: Evidence For Limited Interfacial Gas Exchange At High Wind Speed, T. G. Bell, Warren J. De Bruyn, S. D. Miller, B. Ward, K. Christensen, E. S. Saltzman

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Shipboard measurements of eddy covariance dimethylsulfide (DMS) air-sea fluxes and seawater concentration were carried out in the North Atlantic bloom region in June/July 2011. Gas transfer coefficients (k(660)) show a linear dependence on mean horizontal wind speed at wind speeds up to 11 m s(-1). At higher wind speeds the relationship between k(660) and wind speed weakens. At high winds, measured DMS fluxes were lower than predicted based on the linear relationship between wind speed and interfacial stress extrapolated from low to intermediate wind speeds. In contrast, the transfer coefficient for sensible heat did not exhibit this effect. The apparent …

Food Webs And Food Sovereignty: Research Agenda For Sustainability, Charles A. Francis, Michelle Miller, Molly Anderson, Nancy Creamer, Michelle Wander, Jacob Park, Thomas Green, Brent Mccown Jan 2013

Food Webs And Food Sovereignty: Research Agenda For Sustainability, Charles A. Francis, Michelle Miller, Molly Anderson, Nancy Creamer, Michelle Wander, Jacob Park, Thomas Green, Brent Mccown

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Future food production will be constrained by the scarcity of fossil fuel and fresh water as well as increasing intensity and unpredictability of weather events and climate changes. The assurance of food security and equity for many consumers is complicated by concentration of ownership of land and other production resources, as well as a global corporate food systems model that is driven by profit at the expense of people and the environment. To assess potential alternatives to the contemporary global food chain, well focused research is needed on local food production and food webs where small- and midscale family farms …

The Classical Limit Of Quantum Optics: Not What It Seems At First Sight, Yakir Aharonov, Alonso Botero, Shmuel Nussinov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen, Lev Vaidman

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

What light is and how to describe it has always been a central subject in physics. As our understanding has increased, so have our theories changed: geometrical optics, wave optics and quantum optics are increasingly sophisticated descriptions, each referring to a larger class of phenomena than its predecessor. But how exactly are these theories related? How and when wave optics reduces to geometric optics is a rather simple problem. Similarly, how quantum optics reduces to wave optics has also been considered to be a very simple business. It is not so. As we show here the classical limit of quantum …

Representation Formulas For Hardy Space Functions Through The Cuntz Relations And New Interpolation Problems, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz, Itzik Marziano Jan 2013

Representation Formulas For Hardy Space Functions Through The Cuntz Relations And New Interpolation Problems, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz, Itzik Marziano

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce connections between the Cuntz relations and the Hardy space H2 of the open unit disk D. We then use them to solve a new kind of multipoint interpolation problem in H2, where for instance, only a linear combination of the values of a function at given points is preassigned, rather than the values at the points themselves.

Liquid Sorption Properties And Structural Changes Of Metal-Organic Frameworks Of Cobalt Nitrate And 4,4'-Bipyridine, Kathryn Mauger-Sonnek Jan 2013

Liquid Sorption Properties And Structural Changes Of Metal-Organic Frameworks Of Cobalt Nitrate And 4,4'-Bipyridine, Kathryn Mauger-Sonnek

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metal-organic frameworks consist of metal ions connected by organic ligands. When the metal ions and organic ligands link together in the right geometry, polymeric and infinite 1D chains or 2D and 3D networks are formed. Porous metal-organic frameworks were synthesized from the organic ligand 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) and cobalt(II) nitrate. The metal-organic frameworks synthesized in this study grew into both a previously known 2D bilayer structure, [Co2(bpy)3(NO3)4]n, and a new, orange 1D chain structure, [Co(bpy)NO3)2(H2O)2]n, within ethanol. It was found that the presence of water was the main factor of causing formation of the orange 1D chain crystals. Drying the orange …

Decoration Of Graphene With Metal Nanoparticles And Its Application For Bioanalysis, Keun Soo Kwon Jan 2013

Decoration Of Graphene With Metal Nanoparticles And Its Application For Bioanalysis, Keun Soo Kwon

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Graphene is a two-dimensional monolayer of tightly packed sp2 hybridized Carbon atoms. Formed from graphite, the theoretical surface area of the monolayer is about 2630 m2/g, and the initial formation of graphene oxide from graphite oxide introduces a variety o f functional groups, such as -COOH, -C=0, and -OH, on its surface. The high surface area and the rich presence of functional groups, along with the potential formation o f sp2 bonding networks within graphene oxide, all serve as critical factors allowing for additional chemical modifications. There are extensive research attempts being performed to explore and …

Balancing Human And Machine Contributions In Human Computation Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley, Remco Chang Jan 2013

Balancing Human And Machine Contributions In Human Computation Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Many interesting and successful human computation systems leverage the complementary computational strengths of both humans and machines to solve these problems. In this chapter, we examine Human Computation as a type of Human-Computer Collaboration—collaboration involving at least one human and at least one computational agent. We discuss recent advances in the open area of function allocation, and explore how to balance the contributions of humans and machines in computational systems. We then explore how human-computer collaborative strategies can be used to solve problems that are difficult or computationally infeasible for computers or humans alone.

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu Jan 2013

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Background: We initiate in silico rigidity-theoretical studies of biological assemblies and small crystals for protein structures. The goal is to determine if, and how, the interactions among neighboring cells and subchains affect the flexibility of a molecule in its crystallized state. We use experimental X-ray crystallography data from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The analysis relies on an effcient graph-based algorithm. Computational experiments were performed using new protein rigidity analysis tools available in the new release of our KINARI-Web server http:// kinari.cs.umass.edu. Results: We provide two types of results: on biological assemblies and on crystals. We found that when only …

Towards Accurate Modeling Of Noncovalent Interactions For Protein Rigidity Analysis, Naomi Fox, Ileana Streinu Jan 2013

Towards Accurate Modeling Of Noncovalent Interactions For Protein Rigidity Analysis, Naomi Fox, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Background: Protein rigidity analysis is an efficient computational method for extracting flexibility information from static, X-ray crystallography protein data. Atoms and bonds are modeled as a mechanical structure and analyzed with a fast graph-based algorithm, producing a decomposition of the flexible molecule into interconnected rigid clusters. The result depends critically on noncovalent atomic interactions, primarily on how hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions are computed and modeled. Ongoing research points to the stringent need for benchmarking rigidity analysis software systems, towards the goal of increasing their accuracy and validating their results, either against each other and against biologically relevant (functional) parameters. …

Governing The Post-Socialist Transitional Commons: A Case From Rural China, Shitong Qiao Jan 2013

Governing The Post-Socialist Transitional Commons: A Case From Rural China, Shitong Qiao

Faculty Scholarship

When the collective declines, who manages the collective-owned land? When the socialist state fails, who possesses the state-owned river? This Article concerns the governance of land and natural resources that are still owned by collectives or the state in rural China. No effective community governance has evolved in rural China to fill the authority vacuum left by the dissolution of the people’s commune system. As a result, such land and natural resources have become real commons. In describing these I use the term “transitional commons” to indicate both the crucial influence of the transitional political legal environment in their emergence …

Predicting Application Performance Using Supervised Learning On Communication Features, Nikhil Jain, Abhinav Bhatele, Michael P. Robson, Todd Gamblin, Laxmikant V. Kale Jan 2013

Predicting Application Performance Using Supervised Learning On Communication Features, Nikhil Jain, Abhinav Bhatele, Michael P. Robson, Todd Gamblin, Laxmikant V. Kale

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Task mapping on torus networks has traditionally focused on either reducing the maximum dilation or average number of hops per byte for messages in an application. These metrics make simplified assumptions about the cause of network congestion, and do not provide accurate correlation with execution time. Hence, these metrics cannot be used to reasonably predict or compare application performance for different mappings. In this paper, we attempt to model the performance of an application using communication data, such as the communication graph and network hardware counters. We use supervised learning algorithms, such as randomized decision trees, to correlate performance with …

Citizens’ Perspectives Of Access To The Decision Making Process And Community Improvement As Determinants Of Brownfields Redevelopment Success, Shevon Jean Letang Jan 2013

Citizens’ Perspectives Of Access To The Decision Making Process And Community Improvement As Determinants Of Brownfields Redevelopment Success, Shevon Jean Letang

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Brownfields redevelopment is acclaimed as a successful program that has revitalized struggling urban communities and returned unproductive, underutilized, and abandoned industrial and commercial properties to municipalities’ tax rolls. Despite a major brownfields' redevelopment goal being to improve the communities and their citizens' quality of life, to date, the program has not been evaluated from the mainstreams' perspective as to its impact on their neighborhoods and their quality of life. A survey of 129 citizens from urban, suburban and exsuburban municipalities in Passaic County New Jersey sought to evaluate the social outcomes of three redeveloped projects from the affected mainstreams' perspective. …

Corporate Social Responsibility And The Gold Mining Industry : The Ghana Experience, Aimann Sadik Jan 2013

Corporate Social Responsibility And The Gold Mining Industry : The Ghana Experience, Aimann Sadik

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In 2012, the price of gold is sky rocketing due to strong demand and tight supply. Investors have revived their interest in gold investments at the expense of financial assets such as bonds and equities because of the current financial market turbulence. In addition, the trend in price has been fuelled by the strategic reserve holdings decisions by the central banks of advanced western economies to halt the sale of their gold reserves while that of emerging markets are acquiring gold holdings to protect their wealth during a period of global financial crisis. The supply of gold has not responded …

Seller Diversity On A Technology-Based Platform, Ruhai Wu, Mei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Managing a technology portfolio is one of the great challenges for sustained success, especially in high-technology industrieswhere technologies can be a major selling point. For engineers, this portfolio is more of a toolbox for solving design problems, but in large organizations there can be so many technologies used in different business areas that even the engineers may not beaware of all of them. When the same technologies are used in different types of products, knowledge about them can also begenerated by various groups within an organization. To improve the usefulness of a company's technology base, this paperproposes the use of a …
