The utility of photopigments and absorption signatures to detect and enumerate the red tide dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium breve, was evaluated in laboratory cultures and in natural assemblages. The carotenoid, gyroxanthindiester, was an adequate biomarker for G. breve biomass; water‐column concentrations corresponded with cell standing crops and chlorophyll a concentrations during bloom events in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Unlike other carotenoids, the relative abundance of gyroxanthin‐diester did not change throughout a range of physiological states in culture and the gyroxanthin‐diester: chlorophyll a ratio exhibited little variability in a natural assemblage during bloom senescence. The SBR process is a discontinuous, unsteady state process and has developed popularity in many countries assisted by reliable control technology for example programmable logic control. A typical SBR installation achieves equalisation, aeration and clarification of batches of wastewater on a timed sequence in one basin. This is in contrast to a volume sequenced process such as the conventional continuous stirred tank reactor where individual treatment objectives are met in separate basins. Advantages include, flexability, minimum energy input, consistent effluent quality and inhibition of filament organism growth by properly controlling substrate concentration and aeration sequences. The Litigious Plaintiff Hypothesis: Case Selection And Resolution, Theodore Eisenberg, Henry S. Farber

The process through which cases are selected for litigation cannot be ignored because it yields a set of lawsuits and plaintiffs that is far from a random selection either of potential claims or of potential claimants. We present a theoretical framework for understanding the operation of this suit-selection process and its relationship to the underlying distribution of potential claims and claimants. The model has implications for the trial rate and the plaintiff win rate at trial. Our empirical analysis, using data on over 200,000 federal civil litigations, yields results that are strongly consistent with the theory.

This report discusses the results of a bench scale study conducted to evaluate the potential inhibitory effects of untreated AFFF wastewater to the Virginia Initiative Plant VIP biological nutrient removal process. A bench-scale study was conducted to evaluate the potential inhibitory effects of untreated AFFF wastewater to the nitrification process of the Virginia Initiative Plant biological nutrient removal system. Under this testing, bench-scale reactors simulating the nitrification process were loaded at various AFFF concentrations and the influence on the process performance was evaluated. Let A be a symmetric matrix and B be a nonnegative definite (nnd) matrix. We obtain a characterization of the class of nnd solutions Σ for the matrix equation AΣA = B. We then use the characterization to obtain all possible covariance structures under which the distributions of many common test statistics remain invariant, that is, the distributions remain the same except for a scale factor. Applications include a complete characterization of covariance structures such that the chisquaredness and independence of quadratic forms in ANOVA problems is preserved. Solutions C(r) of the time-independent nonhomogeneous diffusion equation for three different piecewise-uniform source terms are used to examine the limiting size of multicell spheroids using a simple model which reproduces concentration-dependent mitotic behavior. A condition is derived under which nontrivial solutions do not exist (in all three cases), and a condition for the existence of a unique nontrivial solution is established for the case of growth-modifying factor (GMF) production throughout the spheroid. We discuss the geometric characterization of a subset K of a normed linear space via continuity conditions on the metricprojection onto K. The geometric properties considered includeconvexity, tubularity, and polyhedral structure. The continuityconditions utilized include semicontinuity, generalized stronguniqueness and the non-triviality of the derived mapping. Infinite-dimensional space with the uniform norm we show thatconvexity is equivalent to rotation-invariant almost convexityand we characterize those sets every rotation of which has continuousmetric projection. We show that polyhedral structure underliesgeneralized strong uniqueness of the metric projection.

Naturally occurring viruses are very abundant in fresh, estuarine, and marine waters, with densities on the order of 105-108 viruses ml-1. Research has focused on virus effects on bacteria, cyanobacteria, and phytoplankton, as well as mechanisms of virus production and decay. However, little is known about the distribution of viruses in benthic environments or virus effects on organisms in higher trophic levels.

Autotrophic picoplankton had average monthly concentrations of 73.5 X 106 cells/L in the Pagan River, with summer-early fall maxima of 108 cells/L. The abundance peaks increased with rising water temperatures, declining to their least abundance in mid-winter (105 cells/L).

Wetlands worldwide are continually threatened by urbanisation and Western Australia is no exception. Since European settlement in 1829, it has been estimated that at least 75% of the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have disappeared (Halse, 1988). The remaining 25% continue to be threatened by eutrophication and pollution, changes in hydrology and water level patterns, clearing of riparian vegetation, aesthetic disruption and weed invasion (CALM, 1980; Davis and Rolls, 1987; Wrigley et al., 1991; Balla and Davis, 1995). We describe and report progress on the joint U.S. and German campaign to map the X-ray emission from the entire Cygnus Loop supernova remnant with the ROSAT High Resolution Imager. The Cygnus Loop is the prototype for a supernova remnant that is dominated by interactions with the interstellar medium and supplies fundamental physical information on this basic mechanism for shaping the interstellar medium. The global view that these high-resolution observations provide emphasizes the inhomogeneity of the interstellar medium and the pivotal nature of cloud-blast wave interactions in determining the X-ray morphology of the supernova remnant. Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical Newtonian dynamics, we show how to simulate a liquid drop formation on a horizontal solid surface in three-dimensional space. We use sets of quasi-molecular particles which interact in accordance with classical molecular-type formulas. For application, the liquid is taken to be water while the solid surface is taken to be graphite. The resulting dynamical equations for the particles are large systems of second-order, nonlinear, ordinary differential equations which must be solved by a numerical method. Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical molecular dynamics type formulas, a method that can be used to simulate the motion of fluid drops within fluids is described through a detailed study of a prototype problem, the motion of carbon dioxide bubbles in water. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The rise of the bubbles and the motion of the water near the bubbles are described.

We investigate the polarization properties of holographic gratings in side-chain azobenzene polyesters in which an anisotropic grating that is due to photoinduced linear and circular birefringence is recorded in the volume of the material and a relief grating appears on the surface. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the experimental results, making it possible to understand the influence of the different photoinduced effects. It is shown that at low intensity the polarization properties of the diffraction at these gratings are determined by the interaction of the linear and circular photobirefringences, and at larger intensity the influence of the surface …

Solvent Impregnated Resins (SIRs) are high surface area, macroporous, polymeric resins which have been physically impregnated with an organic solvent. In this research, three resins have been impregnated with Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid, a solvent which has shown selectivity to gold. The ability of the resins to recover gold (1) thiourea perchlorate from solution has been investigated. The resins have been studied both bare and when impregnated with the solvent and their efficiency was seen to increase upon impregnation. Dynamical Stability And Environmental Influences In Low Surface Brightness Disk Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Using analytic stability criteria we demonstrate that, because of their low surface mass density and large dark matter content, low surface brightness (LSB) disks are quite stable against the growth of global nonaxisymmetric modes such as bars. However, depending on their (poorly constrained) stellar velocity dispersions, they may be only marginally stable against local instabilities. We simulate a collision between an LSB and a high surface brightness (HSB) galaxy and find that, while the HSB galaxy forms a strong bar, the response of the LSB disk is milder, manifesting weaker rings and spiral features. Gas Mass Fractions And The Evolution Of Spiral Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

We show that the gas mass fraction of spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with luminosity and surface brightness. It is not correlated with linear size. Gas fraction varies with luminosity and surface brightness at the same rate, indicating evolution at fixed size. Dim galaxies are clearly less evolved than bright ones, having consumed only ∼1/2 of their gas. This resolves the gas consumption paradox, since there exist many galaxies with large gas reservoirs. These gas-rich galaxies must have formed the bulk of their stellar populations in the last half of a Hubble time. The existence of such immature galaxies at …

The Topology Dependence Of Charged Particle Multiplicities In Three-Jet Events, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

A study of individual jet and whole-event charged particle multiplicities in three-jet events measured in e + e − annihilation at the Z reveals a significant topology dependence. Mean jet multiplicities are inadequately described by jet energies; interjet angles must also be specified. Quantitative tests suggest that it is necessary to use transversemomentum- like scales to describe the data.
