The effectiveness of an alpha-chloralose (AC)-corn oil suspension, an AC-margarine mixture, and AC tablets were compared for immobilizing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Responses to AC immobilization also were compared in male and female Canada geese. There was no difference in mean time to first effects or mean time to capture between male and female geese dosed with 30 mg/kg AC in orally-administered bread baits. Recovery times (≤24 hr) also were similar between sexes. Mean (±SE) time to first effects for geese immobilized with AC tablets in bread baits ( 19 ± 3 mm) was significantly less than mean …

Herbicides were detected in rainfall throughout the midwestern and northeastern United States during late spring and summer of 1990 and 1991. Herbicide concentrations exhibited distinct geographic and seasonal patterns. The highest concentrations occurred in midwestern cornbelt states following herbicide application to cropland. Volume-weighted concentrations of 0.2-0.4 μg/L for atrazine and alachlor were typical in this area during mid-April through mid-July, and weighted concentrations as large as 0.6- 0.9 μg/L occurred at several sites. Concentrations of 1-3 μg/L were measured in a few individual samples. Atrazine was detected most often followed by alachlor, deethylatrazine, metolachlor, cyanazine, and deisopropylatrazine. The initial lesions formed in DNA by ionizing radiation include base damage, single strand breaks (SSB), double strand breaks (DSB), DNA cross links, and deletions. Deletions occur through energy deposition and perhaps more importantly through recombination repair of DSB's. Several mechanisms for the formation of DSB's and deletions related to energy deposition can be considered. Track simulation codes have indicated the importance of clusters of ionizations in small volumes similar to the size of a nucleosome. These clusters have been related to several types of damage to DNA, including DSB and deletions resulting from multiple DSB's formed by single electron …

Oxygen-18 (¹⁸O) values of sediment from the Wilson Creek Formation, Mono Basin, California, indicate three scales of temporal variation (Dansgaard-Oeschger, Heinrich, and Milankovitch) in the hydrologic balance of Mono Lake between 35,400 and 12,900 ¹⁴C yr B.P. During this interval, Mono Lake experienced four lowstands each lasting from 1000 to 2000 yr. The youngest low stand, which occurred between 15,500 and 14,000 ¹⁴C yr B.P., was nearly synchronous with a desiccation of Owens Lake, California. Paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) data indicate that three of four persistent low stands occurred at the same times as Heinrich events …

Lithium Bonding Interaction In H2Cy⋯Lif (Y=O,S) Complexes: A Theoretical Probe, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam, S. Pal

Ab initio calculations at 6-31++G(d,p) level have been done on H2CY⋯LiF (Y=O,S) complexes choosing ten possible orientations in each complex. The effect of correlation on complex binding energies has been studied via single point MP2 (full) calculations done on 6-31++G(d,p) geometry. Binding energies have been corrected for basis set superposition error. Frequency calculations confirm that H2CO⋯LiF and H2CS⋯LiF complexes have three and two stable forms, respectively. The most stable form in each complex has been found to have a strong lithium bonding interaction and a secondary hydrogen bondinginteraction. Calcium metabolism is involved in many ways in the cellular activities of the colonial green alga, Volvox carteri. Various drugs that are known in other systems to cause specific changes in calcium metabolism, gave rise to various visible metabolic effects in this study. These effects provide evidence for calcium's role in Volvox growth and development and in its cytoskeleton. Another way that calcium exerts its effect on Volvox is by acting as a second messenger in a G-protein/inositol phosphate signal transduction pathway.

This study is a preliminary computational study of the energies of complex molecules. We are looking at the roles of remote heteroatoms in the hydroboration of propellane systems and ring size effects in the solvolysis of cyclic alkyl halides was examined using computational methods. Geometry and transition state optimizations were done using semi empirical (MNDO. AMI) and ab initio (STO-3G, 3-2IG, and 6-31G*) methods. Attempts to correlate computational results with previously reported data will be presented.

An automated scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive spectrometer was used to gather morphological and chemical information on individual particles from the suspended particulate matter of the Penobscot Estuary and the sediment of Goose Cove/Pond. The goals of the Penobscot Estuary study were to investigate the transport of particles into and through an estuary, the speciation of elements, the abundance of heavy metals, and the background levels of heavy metals. The majority of particles were aluminosilicates originating from a riverine source. Heavy metals were not abundant in the Penobscot Estuary. The objectives of the Goose Cove/Pond study were to …

The direct transformation of the energy of an incident high-energy photon into a measurable potential difference within an absorbing metal is investigated. Experimental evidence is presented that the effect arises from the inherent energy dependence of the electronic density of states, rather than from a simple temperature excursion. The similarities between the results on Al and YBa₂Cu₃O₇ samples indicate that the effect is universal in nature. We assert it may be used as the basis of a fast, energy resolving, individual photon detector for the ultraviolet radiation and x-rays.

A Chemical Extraction Study Of Lead Contaminated Soil From Granite City, Il, Yan Zhang

Granite City, IL, surface soil ( 0-10 cm ) contaminated with lead was studied by both single- and a four-step sequential chemical extraction procedures designed to establish the partitioning, mobility and availability of lead in soil. The five fractions corresponding to the selected extractants were exchangeable, carbonates-bound, Fe-Mn oxides bound, organic matter and residual. Lead contamination of the soil was determined as a function of particle size and soil depth.

The contaminated sample had the highest lead content of 573.1 mg/kg at the 4 cm soil depth level, and on average was about 8.8 times that of background soil. Most …

This thesis is aimed at developing and applying advanced modeling tools in the prediction of risk to the general public from transportation of chemical waste on public highways. The modeling tools developed can then be used to compare alternative waste management scenarios. The application considered is related to the transport of hazardous waste generated by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to current treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. DOE is currently considering four different scenarios.

Using high‐precision stepwise‐heating 40Ar/39Ar methods, we dated volcanic products of at least 12 vents cropping out along the northern segment of the Mesa Butte Fault in the San Francisco Volcanic Field, Arizona, where the relationship between fault and vent alignment is unambiguous. The 40Ar/39Ar isochron dates indicate that the Mesa Butte Fault hosted five episodes of volcanism over a 1 million year interval, from 1400 to 300 ka. The first episode occurred 1 km northwest of the trace of the Mesa Butte Fault, whereas the next two episodes were centered near the intersection of the Mesa Butte and Cedar Ranch …

Azo Dyes Based On 1,10-Phenanthroline, Minchong Mao

Masters Theses

A series of new phenanthroline based azo-dye ligands, produced by diazotizing 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline (5-NH₂-phen) and then coupling this intermediate to a variety of coupling components, has been synthesized and characterized. The coupling components used were β-naphthol, phenol, and 2,6-dimethylphenol, and the three dye ligands were named phen-azo-β-naphthol, phen-azo-p-phenol, and phen-azo-2,6-dimethylphenol, respectively. ¹H-NMR and IR spectra showed that the dyes exist primarily in the azo form in DMSO solution and as solids. UV-Vis spectra (in MeOH) showed intense (ε ≅ 10⁴ M^-1cm^-1) absorptions ranging from 380 nm to 500 nm for these ligands.

The Painleve analysis developed by Weiss et al. [9] for nonlinear partial differential equations is applied to the CMKdV-II equation. It has been shown that this equation passes the Painleve test. By specializing the arbitrary functions that appear in the phi series expansions found in the test, one obtains a system of partial differential equations for the formally arbitrary data. For specific systems, and conjectured in general, these equations are integrable. The form of the resulting reduction enables the identification of integrable reductions of the original systems.
