The kinetics of the reaction of aquonickel (II) ion with N'N'-dimethlethylenediaminediacetic acid has been studied at 25°C and 0.1M iconic strength over a pH range of 6.0 to 9.3 using stopped-flow techniques. Formation reactions in all cases were first-order in Ni (II) and in ligand. The formation rate constant for the protonated and unprotonated species were evaluated and compared to their theoretical value. The rate-determining step is shown to be ring closure. A comparison of this system with other studies involving complexation of nickel (II) confirm the magnitude of the internal conjugate base effect and also shows a correlation between …

The use of integral equations to find radial distribution functions for computing thermodynamic properties is examined. The system considered is a simple classical fluid with interactions according to the Lennard-Jones (6-12) pair potential function. Two parametric integral equations (C and T) are studied in detail. Derivation of equation T and a power series solution are given. Computer solutions at several different temperatures, densities, and parameter values are obtained. Comparisons are made betv/een these results and results from integral equation N, PY, and HNC, and results from Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, and power series methods. An ever increasing number of processors are becoming available to the multiprocessor user. For faster response and efficient utilization of parallel processing systems it is necessary to develop parallel algorithms to solve a single problem.
This paper evaluates the complexity of resolution algorithms run in a parallel processing environment. An overview of parallel processing is presented along with a discussion of general resolution and resolution-refutation systems. An analysis of the complexity required by different control strategies to perform resolution programing is presented using both uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems.

A discharge of chromium-arsenic-copper laden wastewater occurred periodically from 1970 to 1980 at a wood preserving company located in southwestern Kalamazoo County, Michigan. As a result of this discharge, soils at the company site became contaminated with chromium, arsenic, and copper, and a local glacial outwash aquifer became contaminated with hexavalent chromium.
Soil samples collected from the discharge site were analyzed for clay-silt-sand-gravel content, organic matter, pH, clay mineralogy, and chromium, arsenic, copper, iron, and manganese content. Background soil samples were analyzed for most of the above catagories. Pearson r coefficients of correlation were calculated to determine the correlation of …

The kinetics of conformational interchange of 6,6-dicarbethoxydi-benzo- a,c - 1,3 -cyloheptadiene and its 5,5-dideuterated analog were studied using variable temperature NMR techniques. The free energy of activation for conformational interchange of the parent compound was found to be 9.02 kcal mol-1 and that of the 5,5-dideuterated analog to be 9.42 kcal mol-1. Values of the entropy of activation were found to be -19.91 e. u. and -18.12 e. u. respectively. The spectra were recorded on a Nicolet NMC-360 wide bore spectrometer and the data collected treated as an AB spin system.

Naphthalene-2,3-Dialdehyde: A Synthon To 7,9-Polymethylene-8h-Cyclohepta[B]Naphthalene-8-One And A Study Of Their Aromaticity, Edward O. Crapps

This report describes the synthesis of naphthalene-2,3-dialdehyde, and an analytical method for determining its purity by thin layer chromatography. Subsequently, the dialdehyde was condensed with various cyclic ketones to generate a series of polymethylene bridged naphthotropones. It was found that planarity and aromaticity increase with the size of the methylene bridge, although, the bridge must contain six or more methylene groups for the latter to be true. The claim for aromaticity is supported by NMR and IR data, which indicates the positive charge for a perchlorate cation salt is delocalized over the naphthalene and tropone ring system. The genus of a design (BIBD or PBIBD) is defined to be the genus of its corresponding hypergraph (objects as vertices, blocks as edges); that is, the genus of the bipartite graph associated with the hypergraph in a natural way. The Euler formula is used to establish a lower bound (gamma) for the genus of a block design. An imbedding of the design of the surface of genus (gamma) is then described by a voltage hypergraph or voltage graph. Use of the lower bound formula leads to a characterization of planar BIBDs. This is a report of the synthesis and separation of transition metal complexes of hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)- borate and hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazolyl)borate. These complexes contain a central metal ion and two tridentate ligands, one hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate and one hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazolyl)borate. Mass spectrometry proved to be an extremely useful technique for identifying products. Many mass spectra are included and discussed extensively.
Complexes containing hydrobis(pyrazole)(3,5-dimethyl -1-pyrazolyl)borate and hydrobis(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazole) (pyrazolyl)borate also were synthesised and mass spectra obtained.

A circular pattern to the oil production in Calvin Township, Cass County, Michigan, absence of about 1200 feet of Ordovician sediments and uplift indicated by a deep drill hole in the center of the productive area and absence of anomalies on the regional gravity and magnetic maps led to detailed gravity and magnetic surveys over this structure to delineate it and provide information regarding its genesis.
The Bouguer gravity and magnetic anomaly maps show no anomaly associated with the structure. The 28-mile wavelength second harmonic residual gravity and magnetic maps show linear features in the area. Two dimensional gravity modeling …

Structural Geology Of The Northern Snowcrest Range, Beaverhead And Madison Counties, Montana, Mark Kenneth Sheedlo

The Snowcrest Range was uplifted in Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary time as a consequence of thrusting in Precambrian basement and Phanerozoic cover rocks.
The Snowcrest-Greenhorn thrust system is associated with largescale overturned, eastward verging folds. Mean orientation of the thrust system is N.40°E., 35°N.W.. The trend of the thrust system and associated transverse faults appear to be controlled by earlier structures. Mesoscopic and microscopic analyses indicate that metamorphic basement rocks accommodated congressional strain largely by brittle faulting and cataclastic shearing. Kinematic indicators suggest that local stresses were directed east-southeastward.

In processing a Boolean query against a non-inverted file, a subset of the query's keys must be selected. Only the records satisfying these keys need to be retrieved from the file. A dynamic programming algorithm, the Dual-to-minDF, is developed here for arriving at the optimum set of keys, i.e., the minimum number of external record retrievals. Previously suggested greedy methods yield feasible solutions which may or may not be optimal. This algorithm has exponential time complexity. However, it is useful for applications involving relatively short queries with duplication of keys within different conjuncts, and in cases where the files have …

A spectrographic analysis was conducted on ten granite samples of different geological origin from the Pioneer Mountains in Central Idaho. A qualitative analysis was performed first and then a quantitative analysis to determine the presence and relative amounts of copper in the various samples. This spectrographic analysis employed a direct current arc source of 340 volts and 4 amperes to excite the samples which were dissolved in acid and dried on the ends of high purity carbon electrodes. A learning system is examined which is capable of learning a finite state machine from a class of finite state machines based on the observed behavior of the machine. The size of the search space becomes very large as the number of states in the machine increases. Clearly, there are many ways that one can partition the vertex sets of graphs. In the first chapter of this work I examine the problem of determining, for a given graph, the minimum order of a vertex partition having specified properties. In the remaining chapters I concentrate on partitions of two types--those in which each subset induces an empty graph and those in which each subset induces an empty or a complete graph.

Geophysical techniques such as magnetic and electrical resistivity methods are being increasingly applied in investigations of landfills.
For this survey, measurements of the intensity of the earth's magnetic field were taken at regular intervals along traverses. Resistivity readings were taken at selected intervals along the same or very similar traverses. Additional resistivity depth measurements or soundings were obtained at selected points in and around the landfill.
Profiles were analyzed for individual dump structures and for overall magnetic and resistivity response. Contour maps were drawn from the measurements at the site to depict broad trends or patterns. Deeper subsurface geology was …

Projectile K x-ray yields have been measured as a function of target thickness (2.0-150 μg/ cm2) for 20-54 MeV Sq+ ions incident on this carbon foils using the WMU EN tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The measured K x-ray yields were fond to increase for thicknesses < 15 μg/cm2 and decease for thicknesses > 15 μg/cm2 . The increasing yield is attributed to L-Shell non-equilibrium as the ion traverses the foil, while the decreasing yield is attributed to K-shell non-equilibrium. The lower Salina Group of the Michigan Basin is composed of a cyclic succession of carbonate and evaporite units. The lowermost Salina unit is the A-1 unit which consists of a lower A-1 evaporite and an upper A-1 carbonate. The A-1 unit is underlain by Niagara Group carbonates. The transition from Niagaran carbonates to A-1 evaporite to A-1 carbonate has not been thoroughly understood and previous models have not satisfied some of the evidence. The hydrolysis of octanohydroxamic and N-methyloctanohydroxamic acids in the presence of cationic and anionic micelles was investigated. Rate constants were determined for the hydrolyses in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (ctab), the cationic surfactant, with 0.1111 N NaOH and in sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate, the anionic surfactant, with 0.09270 N HC1 at 50.01 + 0.11°C. The acid hydrolysis and the base hydrolysis of N-methyloctanobydroxamic acid followed the standard model for micellar catalysis.

The Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary Laramide orogeny was responsible for the northward tilting of the pre-Eocene rocks of the area. The Late Cretaceous deposition of the Elkhorn Mountains Volcanics resulted in the volcanic-Madison Group unconformity. Late Cretaceous faulting took place probably in response to caldera subsidence. Laramide uplift erosion and downstream transport resulted in the deposition of the Conrow Creek conglomerate and debris flows over the Lodgepole Limestone. Block faulting took place in response to regional extension probably during Late Oligocene-Early Miocene time resulting in the formation of the St. Paul's Gulch, Golden Sunlight, and Boulder basin faults. A decomposition of a nonempty graph G is a collection of subgraphs G(,1), G(,2), ... , G(,k) of G such that their edge sets form a partition of the edge set of G. If G(,i) is isomorphic to a fixed graph H for each i, then G has an isomorphic decomposition into the graph H or, equivalently, G is H-decomposable. Several topics, each concerning isomorphic decompositions, are investigated in this dissertation.

A detailed high resolution ground magnetic survey was conducted over part of the Albion-Scipio Oil Field Trend. The purpose of the survey was to delineate any magnetic anomalies associated with the trend. A field method using two magnetometers was employed. Sixteen simultaneous readings were taken at a mobile and a base station, and the field operator read the total field values using a 'T ', or similar pattern. This method eliminated much of the noise associated with ground surveys. The resulting residual magnetic map indicates that the basement rocks consist of mafic and felsic, dikes and plutons. The objective of this study is to provide an efficient uniform system for data base directories, so that every file in the data base will have the same type of efficient directory. Data base directories will then be uniformly generated, updated and maintained.
The uniform system which is developed here can handle not only discrete attributes, but also range attributes. For the range attributes, it provides the uniform ranges (i.e., a set of ranges such that the records are distributed uniformly between ranges.)

A Digital Data Acquisition System (DDAS) microcomputer was designed and constructed to interface between a six-channel analog seismograph and a digital cassette recorder. The DDAS microcomputer is a relatively inexpensive microcomputer built around the popular Z-80 microprocessor chip. It is portable and has 26K bytes of memory. It was designed to convert analog data in to digital with some processing performed before storing on the digital cassette recorder, for later analysis. The same hardware or circuitry of the DDAS microcomputer can perform other functions and work with other geophysical equipment by changing the software of the microcomputer.

A Jarrell-Ash Atomic Absorption/Flame Emission 82-360 Spectrometer was interfaced to a Heathkit ETA-3400 microprocessor. The microprocessor is used to pulse the hollow cathode lamp from a "steady" current to a "peak " current during the opening of the chopper. The current from the photomultiplier-tube is converted to a proportional voltage which is supplied to a sample-and-hold circuit. A successive approximation routine is used to convert the voltage to a representative digital value. Digital values are obtained for the "blank" and "sample" and are used to calculate percent absorption values. The system can also be used to obtain emission values.
