Stylolites Cathodoluminescence Under Cross Polarized Light, Katherine Dvorak Aug 2018

Stylolites Cathodoluminescence Under Cross Polarized Light, Katherine Dvorak

The Hilltop Review

Devil's Gate limestone under cathodoluminescence. Bright yellow and orange areas are calcite and the bright blue indicates trace minerals along the solution seam. Trace minerals left in the seam are heavy metals and other silicate minerals.

Totality In Carbondale, Grant Haynes Aug 2018

Totality In Carbondale, Grant Haynes

The Hilltop Review

August 21 was one of the high points of 2017. That day a total solar eclipse tracked over much of the continental U.S. An early morning train ride brought me to Carbondale Illinois, the location of the eclipses longest duration. As totality neared clouds obscured this amazing celestial wonder, but they soon parted, and I was able to get a few spectacular photos of the eclipse, this one with the clouds that almost ruined it, is my favorite.

Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia M. Makepe, Kgomotso Montsi, Keratilwe Bodilenyane Mar 2015

Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia M. Makepe, Kgomotso Montsi, Keratilwe Bodilenyane

International Journal of African Development

Realizing sustainable development is a major challenge for most African countries. Economic growth in most African countries is largely centered on the extraction of natural resources, particularly minerals. Rather than facilitate development, the extraction of natural resources in most countries, has been a source of adverse outcomes. That is, natural resources led to ‘the resource curse’, partly because of bad governance and leadership. Through governance and leadership, Botswana emerged differently. The country transformed itself to a middle income status through the prudent utilization and management of mineral (non-renewable) resources; making Botswana one of the few resource rich countries that have …

Advantages Of A Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic Potential In Lattice Boltzmann Simulations, Tai-Hsien Wu, Dewei Qi Jan 2015

Advantages Of A Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic Potential In Lattice Boltzmann Simulations, Tai-Hsien Wu, Dewei Qi

The Hilltop Review

A new structure, generalized lattice nonlinear spring model (GLNSM), which adopts non-linear FENE-LJ potential instead of harmonic potential, has been coupled with lattice Boltzmann simulation for solving fluid-solid interaction problem. In this article, a significant work is the relationship between the GLNSM (FENE-LJ potential) and Young’s modulus has been described in detail. A validation has also been presented to prove that GLNSM is reliable.

Wi-Fi Location Determination For Semantic Locations, Keith J. Kelley Jan 2015

Wi-Fi Location Determination For Semantic Locations, Keith J. Kelley

The Hilltop Review

In Wi-Fi location determination literature, little attention is paid to locations that do not have numeric, geometric coordinates, though many users prefer the convenience of non-coordinate locations (consider the ease of giving a street address as opposed to giving latitude and longitude). It is not often easy to tell from the title or abstract of a Wi-Fi location determination article whether or not it has applicability to semantic locations such as room-level names. This article surveys the literature through 2011 on Wi-Fi localization for symbolic locations.

Advocating For Mother Earth In The Undergraduate Classroom: Uniting Twenty-First Century Technologies, Local Resources, Art, And Activism To Explore Our Place In Nature, Christina Triezenberg Ph.D., Ilse A. Schweitzer Vandonkelaar Jan 2015

Advocating For Mother Earth In The Undergraduate Classroom: Uniting Twenty-First Century Technologies, Local Resources, Art, And Activism To Explore Our Place In Nature, Christina Triezenberg Ph.D., Ilse A. Schweitzer Vandonkelaar

The Hilltop Review

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. Using …

Lessons Learned As A Novice Researcher: A Pilot Study In Mathematics Education, Nicole L. Fonger Sep 2011

Lessons Learned As A Novice Researcher: A Pilot Study In Mathematics Education, Nicole L. Fonger

The Hilltop Review

The lessons we learn in life are often catalyzed by events or happenings that we experience and that subsequently change us in some way. Life as a graduate student is replete with diverse experiences that mold and shape one‘s outlook on teaching, learning, and disciplined inquiry. As a doctoral candidate, my role as a novice researcher is increasingly budding with growth and my responsibilities to design and conduct research have engendered some important lessons. Often confined to private or classroom conversations with graduate students and faculty members, the lessons I have learned as a novice researcher seem worth sharing to …

Modeling Of A Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes With The Fdtd Method, Buddhi Rai Sep 2011

Modeling Of A Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes With The Fdtd Method, Buddhi Rai

The Hilltop Review

The electromagnetic modes are investigated using a simple 1D implementation of the FDTD numerical algorithm to a model of 1D photonic crystal. The fields Ez and Hy are simulated along the x-axis, the propagation direction. Source implementation and the effects of various boundary conditions such as ABC, Mur on TF-SF fields are investigated. Of particular focus in this paper is, for example, on investigating the guided and/or radiation modes at a stop band frequency of the photonic crystal formed of linear and Kerr nonlinear media. Such structures exhibit interesting transmission and reflection properties that make them suitable for …

Privacy-Preserving Transactions On The Web, Sahil Behl, Leszek T. Lilien Sep 2011

Privacy-Preserving Transactions On The Web, Sahil Behl, Leszek T. Lilien

The Hilltop Review

There is a rapid growth in the number of applications using sensitive and personal information on the World Wide Web. This growth creates an urgent need to maintain the anonymity of the participants in many web transactions and to preserve the privacy of their sensitive data during data dissemination over the web. First, maintaining the anonymity of users on the World Wide Web is essential for a number of web applications. Anonymity cannot be assured by single interested individuals or an organization but requires participation from other web nodes owned by other entities. Second, preserving the privacy of sensitive data …
