The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Nuclear transfer from adult somatic cells is an advanced reproductive biotechnology. This technique can be applied in animal production for producing a high genetically identical copy for endangered species conservation and for therapeutic cloning for human medicine. Our three-year preliminary study indicates the possibility of somatic cell cloning by using the rabbit as model of technical development. Later, interspecies cloning in wild cats and domestic cats was performed successfully in terms of cloned embryo production. Meanwhile, goat cloning served as the model for farm animals.

Twenty cadaver canine forelimbs, 9 right and 11 left, were used to evaluate the most effective radiographic position that can enhance the cranial aspect of the medial coronoid process (MCP) of the ulna. A lead pellet (1 mm) was buried to represent the area representing the cartilegenous fragment in the canine patient in the fragmented medial coronoid process (FMCP). The distance between the pellet and the radial surface and the superimposition of the humeral condyle silhouette on the pellet were used as parameters for analysis. The Use Of Porcine Small Intestinal Submucosa In Ten Cases Of Canine Corneal Staphyloma, Nalinee Tuntivanich, Kumpanart Soontornwipart, Pranee Tuntivanich
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Porcine small intestinal submucosa biomaterial was used to repair corneal staphyloma in 10 dogs. There was no evidence of leakage of aqueous humor and graft rejection following PSIS grafting. Anterior synechia was presented in 25-50% of the corneal area. Granulation tissue vanished within 50 days of the operation. Even though scar formation and anterior synechia were observed at the end of the study, all dogs had vision.

Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), serum neutralizing antibody titers of 854 sows were determined using a neutralizing peroxidase linked assay (NPLA). Blood samples were collected one-week post-partum from 1st- 6th parity sows, from 30 swine fever-free farms. The farms were divided according to their vaccination programs, 10 farms for each program. Program A sows had been vaccinated 3 weeks pre-partum (288 samples). Program B sows had been vaccinated 3 weeks post-partum (276 samples). Blood cells and platelets from twenty-seven animals belonging to two genera of the Family Felidae, were studied using both light and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Generally, blood cells can be categorized into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The red blood cells or erythrocytes from these species were round and had neither a nucleus nor organelles. They showed a central pale area, Heinz bodies and rouleaux formation. The white blood cells could be divided into two groups; granulocytes and agranulocytes. This experiment was designed to study the results of laboratory diagnosis of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infection in layer chicken receiving MG vaccines and MG organisms. One hundred and twenty 1-day-old-malelayer chickens were raised in separate isolation rooms and equally allocated into 4 separated groups. When 4 weeks old, groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 served as a negative control, a MG commercially inactivated vaccine group, a MG commercially live vaccine group and a MG infected group, respectively. Oral Medication With Florfenicol For Black Tiger Shrimps Penaeus Monodon, Nutcharnart Tipmongkolsilp, Yanin Limpanon, Benjamas Patamalai, Pischa Lusanandana, Janenuj Wongtavatchai

Florfenicol (FF) and Chloramphenicol (CAP) were tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against 102 Vibrio isolates from clinical cases. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for both antimicrobials was ≤ 8 μg/ml suggesting that all of the tested isolates were susceptible to both antimicrobials. The observed MIC range of FF (0.5-4.0 μg/ml) was more potent than that of CAP (0.5-8.0 μg/ml). The activity of both antimicrobials was not substantially influenced by the addition of sea water (5 ppt salinity) to the test system. Hemangiosarcoma of the nictitating membrane of two Great Dane dogs is reported. Treatment was successfully carried out by amputation of the nictitan. No recurrence of the mass or pulmonary metastasis was evident within a period of twelve months after the treatment.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common microsporidia that causes disease in immunocompromised hosts, especially in AIDS patients. E. bieneusi has been reported in a wide range of animals, including domestic, wild and farm animals. Using molecular typing and phylogenetic analysis, the zoonotic potential of E. bieneusi to cause disease is indeed a threat. Transmission from animals to humans should be investigated and whether it occurs naturally, before we can address the whole subject of zoonotic transmission of E. bieneusi infection.

The investigation of the relative roles of Soluble Microbial Products (SMP) in membrane fouling was studied in submerged membrane bioreactors (SMBRs). Three lab-scale SMBRs were operated at a constant permeate flux (12.5 l/m2 h) with a flat sheet microfiltration membrane (hydrophilic polyolefin, pore size of 0.25 μm) using different sludge retention times (SRTs of 8, 20 and 80 days, respectively). The concentrations of SMP in terms of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and protein at the steady-state period were compared. 288 kidneys complete with renal arteries and abdominal aorta, were collected from 144 dogs (75 males and 69 females), dissected and studied according to the number, branch, length and position of the renal arteries bifurcation. The positions of the left and right renal arteries were also observed. Double renal arteries were noted in 14 of 144 dogs (9.72%) but only on the left side. Single renal arteries had one to six branches. Most kidneys had 2 (39.42%) or 3 (33.58%) branches. The bifurcation mostly occurred in the middle of the renal artery (60.61%). Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a highly fatal disease of ruminants which has not been extensively studied in Thailand. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical signs and pathological findings of MCFaffected buffaloes (n = 13), in the Nakhonpathom province of Thailand. All cases were collected between May 1996 and August 2000. Before the 1998 outbreak, four clinically normal sheep were moved into a pen adjacent to the buffaloes’ pens. The animals developed clinical signs of severe depression, anorexia, high fever, hypersalivation, and corneal opacity-associated excessive lacrimation. A macroscopic study revealed that a double cranial vena cava was present in fifteen, adult, Lylei’s flying foxes, of both sexes. It consisted of right and left branches, without forming a left brachiocephalic vein. However, both of them drained blood into the right atrium. The right cranial vena cava drained blood directly into the right atrium. The left cranial vena cava drained blood into the coronary sinus before returning blood into the right atrium. The effect of epidural ketamine was studied in 20 experimental dogs premedicated with 0.04 mg/kg atropine and 2 mg/kg xylazine, given intramuscularly along with 0.2 mg/kg acepromazine given intravenously. All dogs received, epidurally, 2 mg/kg ketamine diluted in 0.9% normal saline (NSS) in a volume of 1 ml/ 4.5 kg and, one week or more before, or later, 1 ml/ 4.5 kg NSS without ketamine as a control. Animal response to pain stimulation was evaluated before, and during a surgical approach on the medial aspect of the tibia. Fifteen purebred (Holstein-Friesian) sires and 45 crossbred (75% up-grade Holstein-Friesian) sires from the Division of Artificial Insemination (AI), Department of Livestock Development were genotyped for the kappacasein gene by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The allele A, B and E were found and the allelic frequencies were 0.6, 0.33 and 0.07 in the purebred sires and 0.74, 0.17 and 0.09 in the crossbred sires. Ninety six, fourteen day-old, broiler chickens were randomly divided into four groups of 24 birds. Groups 1 and 2 were orally vaccinated with live commercial intermediate-plus and intermediate infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccines, respectively. Groups 3 and 4 served as a positive and negative non-vaccinated controls, respectively. Blood samples were collected at 14, 28 and 38 days of age for determining IBD antibody titers by an ELISA test. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of temperature and humidity on the conception rate of Holstein crossbred dairy cows in smallholder farms in Chiang Mai, Thailand. 7,312 pregnancy diagnosis examinations on 3,166 dairy cows in 510 herds and artificially inseminated, were collected by Chiang Mai AI Research and Biotechnology Center. The monthly average weather data, including minimum and maximum of both temperature and humidity, were obtained from the Thai Meteorological Department for the months January 2001 to December 2002. The purpose of this study was to determine the localization of Bcl-2 protein in porcine oviducts. Anti-human Bcl-2 monoclonal antibody was used to localize Bcl-2 protein immunohistochemically in the uterotubal junction (UTJ), isthmus and ampulla of pre-ovulatory (n=10) and post-ovulatory (n=10) sows. The Bcl-2 protein was detected in quantity in the intracytoplasm of the epithelial cells, some types of leukocytes in the epithelial layer and in the subepithelial connective tissue, in fibroblasts, as well as smooth muscle cells of the UTJ, isthmus and ampulla in the pre-ovulatory period.
