Phacofragmentation And Aspiration In Canine Mature Cataract: Surgical Technique, Success Rate And Complications, Pranee Tuntivanich, Nalinee Tuntivanich

Phacofragmentation and aspiration technique without intraocular lens implantation was reported in 26 mature cataractous dogs. Dogs included in this study were 13 Poodles, 6 crossbred dogs, 4 Cocker spaniels, 1 Shih-tzu, 1 West Highland white terrier and 1 Miniature pinscher. All dogs were clinically blinded from bilateral mature cataracts with positive dazzle reflex prior to the surgery. 24 dogs (92.31%) regained vision after the surgery which remained until the end of the study. Vitreous degeneration was found pre-operatively in one dog. Hyphema, displacement of lens into vitreous chamber, rupture of the posterior lens capsule and miosis were found intra-operatively in …

This study was to conduct a surveillance of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infection in mixed Thai native chickens. Samples were submitted from 30 mixed Thai native chicken flocks, 15 birds per flock, aged between 1 and 4 months without MG vaccination in the area of Nakornpathom province during the September 2005 - October 2006 period. Each bird was bled for MG serology by a serum plate agglutination (SPA) test and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test kits and swabbed for MG antigen detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Significant changes in respiratory disease have occurred over the last 20 years. There are two primary reasons for this. In the first instance, there has been the occurrence of two major worldwide plagues-PRRS and PCV2-associated diseases. The second reason has been the considerable advances in vaccination, which have become available for some of the respiratory diseases, in particular Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Vaccines have also become available for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRS), influenza viruses (outside UK) and probably in the near future against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2).

Accurate estimation of body weight is useful for feeding program evaluation, assessing nutritional status and general health, and for accurate dose calculation in medical treatment. However, it is impractical to weigh elephants due to their enormous size and tremendous weight, and also due to the lack of a suitable weighing machine. The study was aimed at finding out whether dog sperm could be labelled using 99mTc-HMPAO and finding the optimum incubation temperature and amount of 99mTc-HMPAO to label spermatozoa from fresh ejaculates and from frozen-thawed semen. A radiopharmaceutical was prepared by reconstituting 0.5 mg of HMPAO with 5 ml pertechnetate solution containing 100 kBq 99mTc. Semen samples were obtained from three dogs, pooled and divided into aliquots containing 100x106 spermatozoa each. Fresh and frozen-thawed semen samples were used. An extremely rare case of congenital oesophageal stenosis in a two-month-old, male, miniature pincher dog was reported. The puppy was presented at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, with a history of an acute onset of regurgitation at the time of weaning on to solid food. Contrast radiography of the oesophagus showed that the oesophagus at the cervical and thoracic-inlet portions was moderately dilated. Upon oesophagoscopic examination, the oesophageal lumen adjacent to the heart base showed intraluminal stenosis. Haemotrophic Mycoplasma is the obligatory bacteria formerly classified to the genus Haemobartonella. This blood mycoplasma is responsible for the cause of a cat disease, haemoplasmosis or feline infectious anemia (FIA). The housed cats evidenced by cachexia, high fever and a certain degree of anemic condition have been reported with FIA worldwide. However, this disease is only a presumptive case in Thailand where the disease is presumably endemic. We examined two cats suffering from FIA tested with the standard microscopic examination. pathological study of Helicobacter spp. infection in pigs was performed to determine the incidence of Helicobacter spp. infection, and to define the relationship between Helicobacter spp. infection and the histopathological changes of gastric mucosa in pigs, using Warthin Starry stain and immunohistochemistry. A total of 115 biopsies of the cardia, fundus, body and pyloric antrum of swine (mean weight 150 kg) obtained from slaughterhouses in Nakornpathom province (Thailand) were investigated. Genetically Modified Mosquitoes: A New Strategy To Control Mosquito Borne Diseases, Padet Siriyasatien, Usavadee Thavara
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Mosquito borne diseases remain a major human and animal health concern in many areas of the world. Chemical control strategy faces a number of problems including the development of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, the impact of insecticides on human and animal health and the environment and the constant inability to control mosquitoes effectively. Advances in the knowledge about mosquito-pathogen relationships and the molecular biology of mosquitoes make it now possible to produce mosquito strains that are unable to transmit various parasites or viruses. Strategies of using the genetically modified mosquitoes to control mosquito borne diseases are discussed here.

At least, 4 mosquito species, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex gelidus, Anopheles vagus and Mansonia uniformis were identified on a pig farm in Nakorn Pathom, Thailand between March 2004 to February 2005. C. tritaeniorhynchus was found to be the predominant species (88.387.63%). To determine whether C. tritaeniorhynchus could serve as a mechanical vector for PRRSV transmission, 2 experiments were conducted on: the duration of PRRSV within the mosquitoes and PRRSV transmission from the PRRSV-infected pigs to naive pigs by the infected mosquitoes. Morphological Changes In The Oviduct Of Culling Replacement Gilts, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong, Padet Talummuk

The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological changes of the oviduct from 30 culling replacement gilts and 6 control sows. Blood samples and female genital organs were taken immediately after slaughter. Post-mortem examinations were made on the genital organs and oviductal samples, i.e. utero-tubal junction (UTJ), isthmus and ampulla, were collected and fixed for histological analysis. Observations indicated that the reasons for culling the gilts were 'no estrus' (68%) and 'repeat breeding' (32%). The greatest pathological changes (67%) were found in repeat breeding gilts, whereas 52% of no estrous gilts were at prepubertal phase. The female hormonal …

The study developed a thoracoscopic-guided lung biopsy technique that was able to be performed on the right or left lung lobes of dogs. Ten experimental dogs weighing 6-20 kilograms were anesthetized, ventilated and positioned in a lateral recumbency. Either the left or right hemithorax was approached. Owing to arowana being listed in CITES, DNA diagnostics should not rely on conventional methods of obtaining tissue samples. A non-invasive method of obtaining material containing DNA has been developed. Mucus samples for DNA isolation can be obtained by cotton swabbing the arowana body surface with subsequent purification of DNA fragments by using phenol/chloroform. DNA sample quality is assessed by UV absorbancy at wave lengths of 260 nm and 280 nm, as well as by calculating the absorbancy ratio involving 260 nm/280 nm results in order to determine DNA sample quality and quantity. Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), serum neutralizing antibody titers of 854 sows were determined using a neutralizing peroxidase linked assay (NPLA). Blood samples were collected one-week post-partum from 1st- 6th parity sows, from 30 swine fever-free farms. The farms were divided according to their vaccination programs, 10 farms for each program. Program A sows had been vaccinated 3 weeks pre-partum (288 samples). Program B sows had been vaccinated 3 weeks post-partum (276 samples). Blood cells and platelets from twenty-seven animals belonging to two genera of the Family Felidae, were studied using both light and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Generally, blood cells can be categorized into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The red blood cells or erythrocytes from these species were round and had neither a nucleus nor organelles. They showed a central pale area, Heinz bodies and rouleaux formation. The white blood cells could be divided into two groups; granulocytes and agranulocytes. Twenty cadaver canine forelimbs, 9 right and 11 left, were used to evaluate the most effective radiographic position that can enhance the cranial aspect of the medial coronoid process (MCP) of the ulna. A lead pellet (1 mm) was buried to represent the area representing the cartilegenous fragment in the canine patient in the fragmented medial coronoid process (FMCP). The distance between the pellet and the radial surface and the superimposition of the humeral condyle silhouette on the pellet were used as parameters for analysis. Porcine small intestinal submucosa biomaterial was used to repair corneal staphyloma in 10 dogs. There was no evidence of leakage of aqueous humor and graft rejection following PSIS grafting. Anterior synechia was presented in 25-50% of the corneal area. Granulation tissue vanished within 50 days of the operation. Even though scar formation and anterior synechia were observed at the end of the study, all dogs had vision.
