A subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a type of stoke where a blood vessel bursts and causes the subarachnoid space to become filled with blood. Traditional nursing management of SAH includes close monitoring of blood pressure goals in order to prevent complications such as vasospasm. Vasospasm causes delayed cerebral ischemia and neurological deficits secondary to the initial injury. Recent research has expanded understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind the neuroinflammatory cascade that occurs after a SAH. Infection of B cells by the lymphotropic gamma-herpesvirus Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) causes Multicentric Castleman Disease, Primary Effusion Lymphoma, and the newly-identified inflammatory syndrome designated KICS. Despite proven connections to lymphoproliferative disorders, little is known about how KSHV invades the human immune system or the early events governing infection in B lymphocytes. IL-6 signaling plays a critical role in KSHV-mediated disease, where elevated hIL-6 levels are positively associated with KSHV viral load and disease progression. Studies of adolescent drinking show a distinct prevalence of binge drinking, including at extreme levels, and this type of drinking has been identified as increasing risk of developing an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Additionally, females suffer greater levels of harm from binge drinking and AUD and in an abbreviated timeline compared to males. Neuroimmune reactivity, specifically with microglial reactivity following binge drinking, may influence the sex differences seen in negative alcohol-related health disparities.

Proteomics, the study of complex protein mixtures in which liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is used to analyze peptide sequences, is commonly utilized to study the double membrane, cell-derived vesicles known as exosomes. Exosomes are double membrane, cell-derived vesicles that contain cell components such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. They function to transport proteins and cellular materials between cells and are involved in the progression and metastasis of cancer. The impact of these extracellular vesicles on cancer spread can be analyzed using proteomics, through the purification of the proteins isolated from the vesicles. Background: Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in the country, with significant ethnic disparities. Filipino Americans (FAs), the third-largest Asian subgroup in U.S., face an elevated burden of dyslipidemia, a primary modifiable risk factor for heart disease. Objectives: This community-based study addresses critical knowledge gaps by characterizing the cardiometabolic and genetic factors contributing to dyslipidemia among FAs and implications for personalized cardiovascular drug therapies, particularly statin pharmacogenomics (PGx). BACKGROUND: Pharmacovigilance (PV) Sciences include activities related to safety surveillance of pharmaceutical products, and is critical for developing safe and effective medications, vaccines and medical devices. Safety monitoring starts with preclinical research and continues through clinical trial and post marketing phases. PV scientists ensure patient safety during clinical trials through regular review and analysis of safety data. Regulations have become increasingly complex, leading to inadequately defined methods for reviewing large clinical trial safety datasets. Inconsistent safety data review (SDR) practices can result in delayed detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or safety signals.

Background: Hypertension (HTN) that is not adequately controlled leads to cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart disease. It affects 116 million adults (47%) in the United States (U.S.). The HTN compliance rate in a South Texas public health clinic was 64%, below the national benchmark of 76%. Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) was recommended in a joint statement by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Medical Association (AMA). Literature evidence revealed that the HBPM bundle increased BP control (< 140/90 mmHg) compliance.

Lung cancer is the global leading cause of cancer related death. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 80% of lung cancer diagnoses conferring a significant disease burden. However, certain mutations in tumor suppressors such as Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1) confers resistance to standard of care therapy in NSCLC. KEAP1 is known to regulate multiple cellular processes such as oxidative stress response and anti-apoptotic pathways. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the deadliest and most common malignant CNS tumor. Despite advances in understanding its biology and the development of targeted therapies, effective treatment options remain limited. As a result, patient survival rates are dismal, with a 5-year survival rate of only 6.8% and an overall survival of less than two years. This poor outcome is partly due to our inability to treat GBM cells that infiltrate the whole brain. Carfilzomib (CFZ) is a second-generation proteasome inhibitor showing great efficacy in multiple myeloma treatment, yet its clinical applications for other diseases such as solid cancers are limited due to low aqueous solubility and poor biostability. Ternary polypeptide nanoparticles (tPNPs) are drug carriers that we previ- ously reported to overcome these pharmaceutical limitations by entrapping CFZ in the core of the nanopar- ticles and protecting the drugs from degradation in biological media. Our community-centric study aims to understand perspectives of utilizing pharmacogenomics to guide tobacco cessation in an AIAN community using a survey with qualitative and quantitative components. We assessed participant (n=273) tobacco usage and cessation history, pharmacogenomics knowledge, and perceptions of utilizing pharmacogenomics in the context of tobacco cessation. We found that the majority of participants (92%) were aware of risks associated with tobacco usage and believe it to be a problem within their community (76%). …
