The Opioid Epidemic: How Genetics Play A Role In Addiction And Treatment, Kirsten Houston
The Opioid Epidemic: How Genetics Play A Role In Addiction And Treatment, Kirsten Houston
Honors College Theses
The opioid epidemic is an issue within the pharmaceutical industry in the United States of America due to prescription and non-prescription substances being made available to the population. Opioids include chemical substances that affect the body and brain through opioid receptors, including the mu, kappa, and delta receptors. These substances are derived and synthesized from the poppy plant. Multiple causes have been linked to opioid abuse disorder, including but not limited to employment, income, housing, nutrition, mental health disorders, and genetics. By gathering information from previous literature, genetics may be the main cause of narcotic analgesic tolerance and abuse. Specific …
Longitudinal Assessment Of Pharmacy Student Attitudes Towards Mental Illness, Jessica Dillon
Longitudinal Assessment Of Pharmacy Student Attitudes Towards Mental Illness, Jessica Dillon
Honors Scholar Theses
Background: Mental health stigma in providers is one of the greatest barriers in effective care in psychiatric patients. When patients feel stigma towards them, they have lower levels of self-esteem and lower medication adherence. When training healthcare providers, specifically pharmacists, it is important to assess the effectiveness of training at reducing stigma levels. Previous studies have shown that didactic teaching does not significantly decrease stigma in pharmacy students. However, other studies have shown that students who participated in psychiatric rotations have less stigma surrounding mental health following the rotation. Currently there are no studies that assess the same students’ stigma …

Pharmacists’ Perceptions And Knowledge Of The Legalization Of Medical Marijuana In Mississippi, Faith Houston
Honors Theses
The legalization of medical cannabis in Mississippi was a debated topic among all citizens. This thesis specifically explored pharmacists’ perceptions and knowledge as medical professionals who will be involved with patients certified to use medical cannabis. Information was gathered using a voluntary online survey on the Qualtrics platform to produce a cross-sectional, descriptive study.
From the information gathered, it was apparent that pharmacists in Mississippi have varying opinions regarding medical marijuana. Some are in favor of using these products, and some are not. However, as cannabis has been officially accepted and put into patient's medical plans both current and future …
Mississippi Pharmacists’ Perceptions Of Dietary Supplements, Emory Booth
Mississippi Pharmacists’ Perceptions Of Dietary Supplements, Emory Booth
Honors Theses
Dietary supplements are often a controversial topic among healthcare professionals. Many view supplements positively and appreciate the health benefits they can provide. Others are wary of the decreased regulation dietary supplements are subject to and believe that the benefits of supplements do not outweigh the risks. Dietary supplements are of particular interest to pharmacists, as they are often sold at their place of work, and pharmacists have to consolidate their patients’ supplement use with their medication use. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the viewpoints of Mississippi pharmacists in relation to dietary supplements. A survey was sent to …

Assessing The Accuracy And Deficits Of Popular Drug-Interaction Software Programs In Detecting Interactions Between Cannabis And Pharmaceutical Drugs, Nathan C. Ramsbacher
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
- Purpose – The management of drug interactions in healthcare is a large concern for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, especially for patients requiring large amounts of medications. Healthcare professionals and patients alike utilize drug-interaction software programs (DISPs) frequently to manage medications and make clinical decisions. There is a large discrepancy between DISPs in terms of detecting clinically significant drug interactions. Notably, cannabis does not flag as an interaction as reliably as pharmaceutical drugs on many DISPs. With rising cannabis use in the United States, patients deserve to make decisions on how to safely use cannabis with their prescription drugs …

Evaluating A1c Reduction In Patients With Diabetes Receiving Pharmacy Intervention, Christopher R. Evans, Kirsten Held, Stephanie Thomas, Jeanne Spencer
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Introduction: Diabetes affects 34 million Americans and is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) the A1c goal for most patients is less than 7%; however, in patients at risk for hypoglycemia or with complications that goal can be increased up to less than 8%. Management of diabetes with diet and exercise is essential, but insufficient for most patients and pharmacologic intervention is necessary to achieve therapeutic goals. Reducing A1c is associated with lower cardiovascular risk and a reduction in diabetes-associated complications. Previous studies have shown that pharmacist management of …

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …
