During the several years in which this therapy has been developed and evaluated, as standard dermatological preparation has not been available. The objective of the present work was to study the release of 5-FU from various ointment bases and to attempt to determine the type of base which would release the compound most satisfactorily.

The methods chosen were designed to determine the release and penetration of 5-FU both by in vitro and in vivo methods. A modified agar plate method was chosen as the in vitro test for measuring release and subsequent diffusion into the agar. The penetration of the …

Fluidization operations, although relatively unexplored in pharmacy, have been firmly established on a broad scale in other industries. Fluidization may be defined as the suspension and agitation of a bed of particulate solids by a vertically rising stream of gas. Each suspended particle is surrounded by the gas. Tetracyclines, originally isolated in the late 1940's and early 1950's from the mycelium of Streptomyces, have achieved major importance as therapeutic and prophylactic agents against a wide range of infections in human and veterinary medicine. They have also achieved great importance in agriculture where they are widely used to promote weight gain in livestock. Commercial production, during 1958 in the United States alone was 120 tons with a value of approximately $1 million per ton.

Many attempts have been made to prepare aryl boronic acids and their esters which show a preferential affinity for tumor tissues for use in radiation therapy of neoplatic disorders (1,2). The data of Soloway, as extended and refined by Hansch and his coworkers, successfully correlates the low lipid solubility and electron releasing substituents of phyenl boronic acid derivatives with increased tumor concentration (3,4,5). However, most of these organoboron compounds do not produce a sufficiently high tumor-to-normal tissue boron concentration ratio for practical use in human cancer chemotherapy by the neutron capture technique. The roots and rhizomes of Anemopsis Californica (Nutt.) Hook and Arn. (family Saururaceae) have been used by the early Spanish Americans and Indians to treat a variety of ailments. The plant is commonly known as Yerba del Mansa, Yerba Mansa, or Manza.

We decided to investigate the essential oil of Anemopsis Californica in greater detail. The results of our investigation to date are included and described in this thesis.

The substance choline, one of the quaternary nitrogen bases, has been the subject of a number of reviews and investigations. It has been described as a cholinergic agent, an inotropic agent, a vitamin, and perhaps in other ways. In spite of the interest shown in its action and uses, there is as yet very little information available as to the mechanism by which it is absorbed by the intestinal mucosa.

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul

Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, R_t X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.

Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

Available instruments for viscosity and rheologic measurements necessitate disruption of the system under test prior to observations. Generally, the gel structure of a thixotropic clay must be disturbed by shaking, pouring into a container for testing, and again upon insertion into the sample of the bob, spindle or paddle of the instrument. Also, these instruments yield a single point reading which is only a final or average value, depending upon the instrument. The occurrences during the test itself cannot be observed. Polarography is a rapid, sensitive, and relatively specific technique that can be applied to pesticide residue analysis. The technique should also prove a valuable tool in overall pesticide research, such as monitoring new columns, studying kinetics, identifying and determining metabolites, assaying primary pesticide standards, and conducting stability studies.

Diphenylamine-ZnCI, has been evaluated as a chromogenic agent for detection of toxaphene, DDT, and chlordane on Al₂O₃ a thin layer plates. Characteristic colors were obtained for these pesticides; a lower level of about 5 μg was detectable. Color reactions of 34 pesticides at the 20 μg level are presented.

There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. Some organic phosphorus pesticides have been determined successfully by polarography (1-7). However, in most cases the methods were used to determine the pesticide in commercial formulations. Little has been reported on the polarographic determination of microgram amounts of these pesticides such as those encountered in pesticide residue analysis.

Many of the methods used for the determination of these pesticides are nonspecific. They are based on cholinesterase assay (8- 12), radioactive tracer analysis (13, 14), total phosphorus (15-17), and paper chromatography (18-24).
