Three Blind Mice, See How They Run: A Critique Of Behavioral Research With Animals, Michael A. Giannelli
Experimentation Collection
Animal research has been a traditionally accepted and respected part of modern psychology from its earliest days. The prevalent view of animals in contemporary psychology has origins far more basic than the scientific method. Its roots are deeply imbedded in Judaeo-Christian culture, a tradition which postulates a wide gulf between humankind and the animal world. The Darwinian revolution and the ethological outlook it fostered, while of immense biological significance, has for the most part been neglected by modern American comparative psychologists in favor of a positivistic-behaviorist orientation with a heavy reliance upon laboratory experimentation.
In recent years, opposition to animal …

Foliar Disease Of Wheat, A. G. P. Brown
Foliar Disease Of Wheat, A. G. P. Brown
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Wheat leaf diseases were at much reduced levels in 1984. This may have been caused by prolonged summer rain prematurely setting off dispersal of spores and also initiating microbiological breakdown of stubble residues. No survey was carried out in 1984 but a good indication of the seasonal effect can be gained by noting that in the spray-timing experiment at Badgingarra disease levels were extremely low until the end of August some 90 days after sowing. Movement Of Bacteria Through Macropores To Ground Water, M. Scott Smith, Grant W. Thomas, Robert E. White
KWRRI Research Reports
Effects of soil type, flow rate, antecedent soil moisture and other factors on transport of E. coli through soils was measured on disturbed and intact columns 20 cm in diameter by 25 to 30 cm in depth. Added E. coli were distinguished from indigenous microbes using an antibiotic resistance marker. Transport of Cl- and 3H2O was also measured. Up to 96 percent of the bacteria irrigated onto the surface of intact columns were recovered in the effluent. Soil structure appeared to be related to the extent of transport. Columns prepared from mixed, repacked soil were much …

Foliar Diseases Of Wheat, A. G. P. Brown
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Leaf disease in the wheatbelt. Wheat leaf diseases were common north of Perth. They were severe in the Moora district and catastrophic in the northern wheatbelt. Yellow spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) and glume blotch (Septoria nodorum) were the major pathogens in most areas with yellow spot exceeding glume blotch in area of leaf affected for the first time since surveys began in 1971. In the south dry conditions prevailed and diseases were hard to find. Figure 1 gives the distribution in the various zones for 1983 excluding the Esperance district which was not surveyed. Stress damage induced mostly by water stress …

82 AL 60, Clover scorch fungicide trials. Aim: Test a range of new fungicides for clover scorch control in comparison with Benlate. Comments: DPX 164-2 and Bavistin gave excellent disease control even at the lower rate. Benlate and Tilt were still satisfactory but control was not as good at the lower rate. Bayleton and Baycor gave some disease control but only at the higher rate. Cercospora leaf spot could be found on most plots with careful search. Economically important damage has occurred only on a few plots. Pseudopeziza leaf spot was notably absent during this season compared with others. 83 …
