Reporting Charcoal Rot In Chia And Developing A Susceptibility Assay, Reis M. Misaka, Hagop S. Atamian Dr., Julien Besnard Dr.

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Chia (Salvia Hispanica) cross breeds were planted in the summer of 2018 with the intent of selective breeding for agricultural benefit. Preexisting pathogens in the soil caused 40-50% fatality of adult plants. This was surprising due to the precursory knowledge that chia has antibiotic and antifungal oils (Elshafie et. al. 2018); chia was only recently documented to be susceptible to Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum). The primary pathogen responsible was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina (aka charcoal rot); a widespread soilborne pathogen which has multiple commercial hosts (Su et. al. 2001).

Induction And Suppression Of Antiviral Rna Silencing By Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Sergio M. Gabriel Peralta Jul 2017

Induction And Suppression Of Antiviral Rna Silencing By Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Sergio M. Gabriel Peralta

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is an emerging pathogen with wide host range and one of the most important viruses of plants. Information regarding processing of negative single stranded RNA viruses such as TSWV in the RNA silencing pathway remains limited. In nature TSWV is only transmitted by thrips as vectors and since infection occurs in both thrips and plants, an experimental system to transmit using thrips and the detection of TSWV were established. In order to understand the processing of TSWV in the RNA silencing pathway, Arabidopsis thaliana as a model plant was used in the genetic analysis against …

Fungicidal Control Of Wheat Leaf Diseases, A G P Brown

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

In a further experiment on fungicides to protect wheat during flowering and grain fill from Septoria nodorurn at Badgingarra Research Station, rates below 1 litre and lower carrier volumes were compared for the fungicide Tilt applied at Zadoks stage 50. A few other fungicides were also included. At spraying there was a moderate infection by Septoria nodorurn (85% of leaf damage), Septoria tritici (10%) and Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (5%). Good control was obtained with most treatments (Table 1) with only Benlate at 1 kg/ha appearing ineffective when percentage disease was rated on October 10, 1985. At October 17 disease scores differed …

Foliar Disease Of Wheat, A. G. P. Brown Jan 1984

Foliar Disease Of Wheat, A. G. P. Brown

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Wheat leaf diseases were at much reduced levels in 1984. This may have been caused by prolonged summer rain prematurely setting off dispersal of spores and also initiating microbiological breakdown of stubble residues. No survey was carried out in 1984 but a good indication of the seasonal effect can be gained by noting that in the spray-timing experiment at Badgingarra disease levels were extremely low until the end of August some 90 days after sowing.
