Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness and third leading cause of visual impairment worldwide; 180 million people suffer from a glaucomatous visual disability. Glaucoma is an ocular neurodegenerative disease with several risk factors. The major identified risk factors of glaucoma are intraocular pressure (IOP), age, race, central cornea thickness, family history, and low diastolic blood pressure. The lowering of IOP is the only modifiable risk factor for the disease. However, we know little about the true character of IOP. Periodic IOP measurements are obtained every few months or at the discretion of the clinician during office hours and …
Developing An Assessment Of Reading Impairment And Its Impact On Occupational Performance In Older Adults With Glaucoma In A Metropolitan Area Of The Southeastern Us: A Mixed Methods Approach, Robin Deacy
All ETDs from UAB
According to the United States Administration on Aging (AOA, 2014), the population of individuals over 65 will be 98 million by the year 2060, doubling its 2014 estimates. As our population ages, the prevalence of glaucoma increases. Vision loss resulting from glaucoma can limit participation in valued occupations including engagement in reading. It has long been thought that mobility issues and glare sensitivity were the main factors that characterized glaucoma. In the late 1990s and early 2000s researchers began to examine quality of life (QoL) in those with glaucoma. It was during these early QoL studies that the first reports …

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is reported to be one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States by Center for Disease Prevention and Control. As the estimated prevalence of the disease will likely triple by 2020, the research in this area should focus on identifying novel targets and therapeutic approaches. One of the therapeutic approaches for DR is the reprograming of retinal metabolism to delay the progression of the disease. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is recognized as a cellular pathway activated in diabetic retina which interacts with key transcription factors to physiologically regulate glucose, lipid homeostasis, and angiogenic …

Quality Of Life, Reading And Accommodation In Children With Low Vision, Dawn Kissner Decarlo
All ETDs from UAB
Childhood permanent, uncorrectable vision impairment (VI) is rare, yet it is a public health burden as the impairment lasts a lifetime. Vision impairment describes decreased vision that affects everyday activities. Acuity cut-points commonly used include 20/40, 20/60 or 20/70. Blindness often refers to legal blindness (best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or worse or a visual field less than 20 degrees). Children with VI often have hereditary conditions such as albinism, optic atrophy and retinal degenerations and are different in many ways than adults with VI. The majority have conditions with onset at or near birth and as a result …

Articles
SIGNIFICANCE
Protanopia is a color vision deficiency (CVD) that is unacceptable for certain occupations. This study compares simultaneously for the first time the ability of three recently revised or developed clinical tests of color vision with the Ishihara test to diagnose protanopia from other color vision deficiencies.
PURPOSE
The objectives were to examine the ability of four clinical tests to differentiate (1) between protan and deutan CVDs in patients with protanopia and deuteranopia, and (2) protanopes and deuteranopes as “strong” deficiencies.
METHODS
The Hardy-Rand-Rittler (4th ed.), City University (3rd ed.), Ishihara, and Mollon-Reffin tests were evaluated against the Oculus Heidelberg …

Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK), caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‑1) infection, is the commonest cause of infectious blindness in the developed world. Following infection the virus is initially suspended in the tear film, where it encounters a multi‑pronged immune response comprising enzymes, complement, immunoglobulins and crucially, a range of anti‑viral and pro‑inflammatory cytokines. However, given that HSV‑1 can overcome innate immune responses to establish lifelong latency throughout a susceptible individual’s lifetime, there is significant interest in understanding the mechanisms employed by HSV‑1 to downregulate the anti‑viral type I interferon (IFN) mediated immune responses. This study aimed to investigate …
Raman Spectroscopy For The Discrimination Of Autoimmune Disorders, Neha Chaudhary
Raman Spectroscopy For The Discrimination Of Autoimmune Disorders, Neha Chaudhary
Doctoral
The bidirectional cooperativity between the innate and adaptive arm of the immune network in response to foreign invaders has long been accepted. Under normal circumstances this response is very effective at eliminating infection, however, inappropriate activation triggered by self components is observed in autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Due to the overlapping nature of the symptoms of each of the syndromes, in terms of clinical and laboratory manifestations, and the lack of a single marker predictive methodology, the differential diagnosis and treatment of these patients still proves challenging. With the advent of targeted …

Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Quality Improvement Initiative To Increase Comprehensive Eye Exams In Patients With Diabetes, Julia Khoury
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication associated with poorly controlled diabetes. Yet, only 60% of the diabetic population receives an annual eye examination by an eye specialist. Retinal imaging increases surveillance of retinopathy, however, it does not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The aim of this quality improvement project was to increase comprehensive eye examinations in patients with diabetes aged 18 to 75 years in a family practice that recently purchased a retinal imager. This quality improvement project occurred over a 10-week period. Project objectives included increasing comprehensive dilated eye …

Welder’S Maculopathy; A Case Report, Christina E. Morettin Od, Bruce A. Teitelbaum Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Outer retinal damage can occur when excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaches the retina. The most common etiology is from the sun, known as solar retinopathy, especially when individuals observe solar eclipses without appropriate eye protection. Another cause of UV retinopathy that is not frequently encountered in practice is arc welding, causing Welder’s Maculopathy. Fortunately, the prognosis of the UV retinopathies is quite favourable, as many fully recover after the initial insult to the retina. This retrospective case review aims to outline the clinical manifestation of this maculopathy and current opinions on its etiology and diagnosis.

Optometric Clinical Practice
Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare, sight-threatening inflammatory condition caused by a nematode. It typically affects healthy children and young adults. Various nematodes have been implicated, including those that originate from dogs and raccoons. Late stage findings include optic nerve atrophy, retinal arterial attenuation, “retinitis pigmentosa-like” retinal pigmentary changes, and central and peripheral vision loss. We present a case study of long-standing DUSN. The combination of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual electrophysiology testing proved invaluable in establishing a presumptive diagnosis of this rare condition.

Anterior Subcapsular Cataract Secondary To Black Mold Exposure, Katherine B. Lynch Od, Bruce A. Teitelbaum Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
A case report of a 31-year-old woman who developed anterior subacapsular cataracts, and associated dermatological signs, after exposure to black mold. While atopic illness is commonly seen in childhood, a growing body of literature supports adult onset atopic dermatitis. Anterior subcapsular cataracts are pathognomonic for atopic illness, and can support a definitive and expedited dermatologic diagnosis of adult onset disease.

Association Of Total Zinc Intake With Myopia In U.S. Children And Adolescents, Niamh Burke, John Butler, Daniel Ian Flitcroft, Daniel Mccartney, James Loughman
Articles
Significance: This present study advances our knowledge on the role of lifestyle factors in myopia (short-sightedness), specifically dietary factors. It has been suggested in previous studies that lower zinc status is associated with myopia; however, this article shows no relationship between dietary zinc intake and myopia in U.S. adolescents. Purpose: It has been suggested that low zinc levels may contribute to the development of myopia. The aim of the present study is to examine, for the first time in a Western population, the association of total dietary and supplement zinc intake with myopia. Methods: A total of 1095 children/adolescents aged …

Prevalence Of Ametropia, Amblyopia And Visual Impairment In Schoolchildren In Ireland, Siofra Harrington
Doctoral
Background: Uncorrected refractive error is an avoidable cause of visual impairment (Naidoo et al., 2016). Currently, there is a lack of adequate data on eye and vision disorders in schoolchildren in Ireland. Accurate prevalence estimates of refractive error and vision disorders are necessary to determine their impact on public health and to assess the need for interventions (McCarty and Taylor, 2000). Purpose: This study reports the prevalence of ametropia, presenting visual impairment, amblyopia and provides population norms for ocular biometric measures in schoolchildren in Ireland. Links between refractive error and demographic and lifestyle factors were investigated. The impact of poor …

The Relationship Of An Ipad, A Video Magnifier, And Large Print Text With Oral Reading Outcomes For Children With Low Vision, Rosemary L. Nave Stawasz
Dissertations
Low vision may cause a decrease in visual performance and interfere with daily functioning, especially reading print or text materials. Reading standard text can be particularly challenging for students with low vision in an educational setting and can reduce oral reading rates. Students with low vision may use large print or low vision devices for reading. Limited evidence currently exists to compare oral reading outcomes across various reading media for children with low vision.
The purpose of this exploratory project was to examine oral reading rate, fluency, and comprehension among children with low vision when using an iPad, a video …

Purpose: Glaucoma is a heterogeneous disease influenced by genetic risk factors. However, not all genetic risk factors have been identified. The aim of this project is to localize genetic factors influencing known glaucoma endophenotypes: intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), and vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR).
Methods: This family-based study design utilizes phenotypic and genomic data from a single well-characterized pedigree residing in the Jiri region of Nepal. Measures of IOP, CCT and VCDR were obtained by Goldmann applanation tonometry, OCT, and slit lamp biomicroscopy, respectively. Using a genome-wide genotype data set (~550,000 SNPs), we performed a genome-wide linkage scan …
Age Differences In Attentional Capture Effects Of Emotional Faces, Shelby King
Age Differences In Attentional Capture Effects Of Emotional Faces, Shelby King
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Sustained attention is necessary to accurately complete cognitive tasks. However, sustained attention can often be disrupted by distracting information. When distractors contain emotional content, past research suggests that they might attract attention. The rapid detection of emotional information is important in everyday life because emotion often emerges in social interaction, including unpleasant interactions where others might pose a threat. The attentional capture effects of emotional faces were explored by inserting them into a visual search task that included differing levels of perceptual load. Twenty-five younger adults and twenty older adults identified target letters in standard trials containing distracting elements, but …

Effect Of Aflibercept On Macular Retinal Layers And Peripheral Non Perfusion In Subjects With Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, Swetha Bindu Velaga
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: The relation between UWF fluorescein angiography (FA) and retinal non-perfusion were studied previously. The relationship between retinal thickness and retinal non-perfusion in subjects with diabetic retinopathy has not been studied using SD-OCT and UWF. Thus, in this current study we used SD-OCT to visualize the individual layers of retina and to evaluate whether the extent of non-perfusion is correlated with macular retinal layer thickness in subjects with PDR with no diabetic macular edema.
Methods: In this prospective longitudinal multicenter, randomized study a total of 36 eyes of thirty six subjects were included in final analysis. Subjects with any history …

Practice Makes The Deficiency Of Global Motion Detection In People With Pattern-Related Visual Stress More Apparent, Jana Wegrzyn
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Pattern-related visual stress (PRVS) refers to the perceptual difficulties experienced by some individuals when exposed to high contrast striped patterns. People with PRVS were reported to have reduced sensitivity to global motion at baseline testing and the difference disappears at a second estimate. The present study was to investigate the effect of practice on global motion threshold in adults with and without PRVS. Methods: A total of 101 subjects were recruited and the Wilkins & Evans Pattern Glare Test was used to determine if a subject had PRVS. The threshold to detect global motion was measured with a random dot …
