Measurement Of Transmission Efficiency Of Blue Light Blocking Devices, Jada Lee May 2024

Measurement Of Transmission Efficiency Of Blue Light Blocking Devices, Jada Lee

Honors Theses

Technology and light sources have experienced a revolution in recent years leading to the production of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. White-light LED bulbs undergo degradation over time, leading to a rise in color temperature and a proportional increase in the emission of blue light from these bulbs. The small size of LEDs makes them the optimal choice for electronic devices because of their limited screen size. This means that blue light now exists in red, green, and blue solid-state illumination systems that did not exist a decade ago. It is debated if blue light induces toxic effects on the …

When Mental Health Becomes Physical, Piper Fain

Honors Theses

Glaucoma, the presence of elevated intraocular pressure, has been shown to directly correlate to elevated blood pressure levels. Likewise, numerous studies have been conducted on the relationship between elevated blood pressure and anxiety in individuals suffering from both. One might wonder, then, if there is any correlation between glaucoma and anxiety? My thesis expands upon this question utilizing a survey distributed to patients at local optometry clinics.

A Trained Eye: Optometrists' View Into Primary Care, Louis C. Magee Iii May 2022

A Trained Eye: Optometrists' View Into Primary Care, Louis C. Magee Iii

Honors Theses

The aim of this thesis is to explore and present the auxiliary responsibilities of doctors of optometry, particularly those involved with primary health care such as screening for serious diseases. This idea was approached by researching the technological capabilities of optometrists, the diseases and conditions they commonly detect, as well as the barriers preventing some people from receiving proper eye care. The importance of optometrists as primary care providers is steadily rising alongside their capabilities. There are many instances within a routine eye exam in which an optometrist is able to detect and recommend treatment of a serious disease. Also …

A Look Into The Impacts Of Tele-Optometry Expansion, Anna Hulsey

Honors Theses

Objective This study aims to assess the health and economic costs and benefits to society and patients resulting from the expansion of telemedicine into online refractive exams and to determine the likelihood of potential consumers to utilize such services. Methods A paper survey was distributed at the Inaugural Cempa Health Fair in October of 2019 to both vendors and participants. 105 responses were used to evaluate personal perceptions, practices, and likelihood across a diverse range of demographics. Responses were then entered and analyzed using descriptive statistics and percentages/frequencies. Results Results showed respondents were most attracted to online refractive exams due …

To Screen Or Not To Screen Parent’S Perceptions Of Eye Care Prevention For Pre-School Age Children, Bonnie E. Keaton May 2016

To Screen Or Not To Screen Parent’S Perceptions Of Eye Care Prevention For Pre-School Age Children, Bonnie E. Keaton

Honors Theses

One in 20 children is at risk for permanent vision loss from disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus (Why Save Sight, 2016). Despite vision disorders and childhood blindness being a common disability in children, preventative vision screenings are not at the center of prevention discussions. Studies have suggested that vision screenings for young children are beneficial in preventing permanent vision loss (Vision Screenings for Healthy Vision, 2016). Vision screenings for preschool children are important and require more attention in the United States. This descriptive study addressed parental perceptions of early detection of vision problems among preschoolers in southeast Mississippi as …
