Hiv-Related Shame: A Grounded Theory Study Exploring The Impact Of Psychoeducation On The Lives Of People Living With Hiv, Melissa Stuntz Jan 2022

Hiv-Related Shame: A Grounded Theory Study Exploring The Impact Of Psychoeducation On The Lives Of People Living With Hiv, Melissa Stuntz

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Over the past 40 years there have been significant advances in medical care for HIV. However, many people living with HIV (PLWH) experience internalized stigma in the form of HIV-related shame. This shame has been found to negatively impact mental health, patient relationships, and adherence to healthcare. This grounded theory DNP scholarly project was aimed at developing a novel theoretical framework and practice to improve quality of life including increased viral load suppression in PLWH. To this aim, a psychoeducation curriculum based on shame resilience theory was implemented with two participants in an inner-city healthcare clinic. While the shame …

Massive Blood Transfusion Practises: A Survey Of Level 1 Trauma Centers, Rebecca C. Parker Jan 2022

Massive Blood Transfusion Practises: A Survey Of Level 1 Trauma Centers, Rebecca C. Parker

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 45 years old, regardless of race, origin, or sex (CDC, 2019). Among patients who sustain traumatic injury, hemorrhage remains the leading cause of death (American College of Surgeons [ACS], 2014). Hemodynamic stability may be achieved through administration of blood products such as packed red blood cells (PRBC), plasma, and platelets (PTL). Patients with severe exsanguination may require administration of blood products in large quantities, also known as a massive blood transfusion (MBT).

Local Problem: Nationally, traumatic injury accounts for over 150,000 deaths annually (American …

Impact Of Care Handoff Methods On Emergency Department Throughput Times, Shelby Graves Jan 2022

Impact Of Care Handoff Methods On Emergency Department Throughput Times, Shelby Graves

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding leads to detrimental results including increased morbidity and mortality, delay in evaluation of treatment, increased cost of care, increased length of stay, diminished staff satisfaction, increased ambulance diversion, and reputation damage for the entire institution (American College of Emergency Physicians, 2019). A study performed at three high volume community hospitals revealed inefficiency of nursing handover as one of the many contributors to prolonged ED length of stay (Salehi, 2019).

Local Problem: According to the 2018 Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance (EDBA) data survey the average length of time from patient arrival to admission disposition was …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: The combined impact of immunity and SARS-CoV-2 variants on viral kinetics during infections has been unclear.

METHODS: We characterized 1,280 infections from the National Basketball Association occupational health cohort identified between June 2020 and January 2022 using serial RT-qPCR testing. Logistic regression and semi-mechanistic viral RNA kinetics models were used to quantify the effect of age, variant, symptom status, infection history, vaccination status and antibody titer to the founder SARS-CoV-2 strain on the duration of potential infectiousness and overall viral kinetics. The frequency of viral rebounds was quantified under multiple cycle threshold (Ct) value-based definitions.

RESULTS: Among individuals detected …

Effectiveness Of Provider Education Concerning Prediabetes Treatment In Mississippi, Marlana Mcfarland Jan 2022

Effectiveness Of Provider Education Concerning Prediabetes Treatment In Mississippi, Marlana Mcfarland

DNP Projects

Prediabetes is defined by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as having an A1C of 5.7-6.4% or a fasting plasma glucose of 100-125 mg/dl. Prediabetes greatly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (ADA, 2019). The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine if providing education to PCPs, practicing in MS, regarding the implementation of a prediabetes treatment algorithm improved their knowledge and implementation of the ADA guidelines. The intention was to bring increased awareness of ADA guidelines regarding the current treatment recommendations for patients with prediabetes to PCPs. A …

The Effectiveness Of Sensory Interventions On Social Participation, Morgan Holcom Jan 2022

The Effectiveness Of Sensory Interventions On Social Participation, Morgan Holcom

OT Student Capstones

Sensory integration is among the most frequently used treatment approaches in pediatric occupational therapy (Schoen et al., 2019). Approximately 5%-16% of children in the United States experience sensory integration dysfunctions and that percentage increases in children with disabilities (Flanagan et al., 2019; Matsushima & Kato, 2013; Randell et al., 2019; Reynolds et al., 2011; Schaaf et al, 2018; Smith Roley et al., 2015). Children with sensory integration dysfunction have been found to experience disruptions in their everyday occupations, including social participation (Lane et al., 2019). To address such deficits, both sensory integration and sensory-based interventions have increasingly been used to …

Ifn-Γ Attenuates Eosinophilic Inflammation But Is Not Essential For Protection Against Rsv-Enhanced Asthmatic Comorbidity In Adult Mice, Abenaya Muralidharan, Md Bashir Uddin, Christopher Bauer, Wenzhe Wu, Xiaoyong Bao, Keer Sun Jan 2022

Ifn-Γ Attenuates Eosinophilic Inflammation But Is Not Essential For Protection Against Rsv-Enhanced Asthmatic Comorbidity In Adult Mice, Abenaya Muralidharan, Md Bashir Uddin, Christopher Bauer, Wenzhe Wu, Xiaoyong Bao, Keer Sun

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The susceptibility to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in early life has been associated with a deficient T-helper cell type 1 (Th1) response. Conversely, healthy adults generally do not exhibit severe illness from RSV infection. In the current study, we investigated whether Th1 cytokine IFN-γ is essential for protection against RSV and RSV-associated comorbidities in adult mice. We found that, distinct from influenza virus, prior RSV infection does not induce significant IFN-γ production and susceptibility to secondary Streptococcus pneumoniae infection in adult wild-type (WT) mice. In ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic mice, RSV super-infection increases airway neutrophil recruitment and inflammatory lung damage …

Realistic And Critical Review Of The State Of Systemic Anti-Microbial Peptides, Guangshun Wang, Abraham F. Mechesso

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Antimicrobial peptide research remains active not only because of the growing antibiotic resistance problem but also our desire to understand the role of innate immune peptides in host defense. While numerous peptides are currently under active development for topical use, this article highlights peptides with systemic efficacy. The scaffolds of these peptides range from linear to cyclic forms. The neutropenic mouse model is well established to illustrate antimicrobial efficacy from direct killing. The majority of tests, however, are conducted using normal mice so that both direct antimicrobial and immune regulatory effects can be characterized. These systemic examples underscore the possibility …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection has led to socio-economic shutdowns and the loss of over 5 million lives worldwide. There is a need for the identification of therapeutic targets to treat COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 spike is a target of interest for the development of therapeutic targets. We developed a robust SARS-CoV-2 S spike expression and purification protocol from insect cells and studied four recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein constructs based on the original SARS-CoV-2 sequence using a baculovirus expression system: a spike protein receptor-binding domain that includes the SD1 domain (RBD) coupled to a fluorescent tag (S-RBD-eGFP), spike ectodomain coupled …

Type I Ifn Signaling Protects Mice From Lethal Sars-Cov-2 Neuroinvasion., Md Bashir Uddin, Yuejin Liang, Shengjun Shao, Sunil Palani, Michael Mckelvey, Scott C. Weaver, Keer Sun

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Multiple organ damage is common in patients with severe COVID-19, even though the underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. Acute viral infection typically activates type I IFN (IFN-I) signaling. The antiviral role of IFN-I is well characterized in vitro. However, our understanding of how IFN-I regulates host immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in vivo is incomplete. Using a human ACE2-transgenic mouse model, we show in the present study that IFN-I receptor signaling is essential for protection against the acute lethality of SARS-CoV-2 in mice. Interestingly, although IFN-I signaling limits viral replication in the lung, the primary infection site, it is dispensable …

Faculty Research 2022

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer ranks the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. This retrospective cohort study was designed to determine time-dependent death hazards of diverse causes and conditional survival of lung cancer.

METHODS: We collected 816,436 lung cancer cases during 2000-2015 in the SEER database, after exclusion, 612,100 cases were enrolled for data analyses. Cancer-specific survival, overall survival and dynamic death hazard were assessed in this study. Additionally, based on the FDA approval time of Nivolumab in 2015, we evaluated the effect of immunotherapy on metastatic patients' survival by comparing cases in 2016-2018 (immunotherapy era, n=7135) and those in 2013-2016 (non-immunotherapy …
