School-Based Practitioners' Perceptions Of Working With Students With Challenging Behaviors, Candace Thrash
School-Based Practitioners' Perceptions Of Working With Students With Challenging Behaviors, Candace Thrash
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Background: School-based occupational therapy practitioners must develop a skill set that allows effective service delivery to individuals, groups, and populations in the school setting in order to support students with varying disabilities achieving their occupation-based goals. There is limited research and literature regarding occupational therapy practitioners’ perceptions regarding working with students with challenging behaviors and what they feel has prepared them to work with these students. It is important to determine if additional training, professional development, fieldwork experiences or mentorships are necessary to prepare school-based therapists to manage students effectively and confidently on their caseload who have challenging behaviors.

Sports betting in Rhode Island was legalized in 2018 after the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association. This study assessed the prevalence of sports betting among Rhode Island young adults, identified sociodemographic predictors of sports betting, and tested whether sports betting was predictive of gambling problems. 12.4% of participants (n = 540, 18-25 years old) participated in sports betting, with the odds 3x higher in men, and 2x higher in essential workers. Problem gambling was 2.4x higher among sports bettors. Greater prevention efforts are needed to limit sports betting and prevent problem gambling.

Prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly prevalent and both conditions have a variety of comorbidities. There are many programs aimed at the reduction or prevention of prediabetes and/or T2DM. However, only a few studies have evaluated the effect of intervention duration and evidence-based frameworks on specific populations at risk for prediabetes or T2DM. This review evaluated evidence-based lifestyle intervention programs to determine whether the duration of programming relates to the efficacy of evidence-based lifestyle change interventions. The aim was to assess relevant outcomes of these interventions in prediabetic or T2DM individuals aged 45 and older. The PRISMA …

ABSTRACT
Lateral epicondylitis is a common degenerative tendinopathy that affects a wide variety of individuals. One patient population that often suffers more than others are workers with manual labor jobs that use vibrating tools and repetitive motions.1 Procedural costs and disease burden associated with lateral epicondylitis have increased in recent years.3 Current treatment of lateral epicondylitis using corticosteroid injections is beginning to fall out of favor. Corticosteroid injections help decrease inflammation; however, research looking into the histology of lateral epicondylitis favors more of a degenerative tendinopathy rather than an inflammatory condtion.1 In addition, several studies have found corticosteroid injections to …

Current systems have not been successful in addressing the existing racial inequities between black dental professionals and other racial groups. This group in particular seems to have less visibility and representation in organized dentistry. Nowhere has this been more obvious that during the COVID-19 pandemic whereby African-American professionals were not as prominently featured in offering their viewpoint and expertise. In this paper, insights regarding the topic of diversity are discussed in order to gain perspective into a situation that has existed far too long.

With the rising prevalence of endometrial cancer and its precursor atypical hyperplasia (AH) in reproductive-age women amid the obesity epidemic, understanding the pathogenesis of this disease process is crucial to improving medical management. We sought to identify factors that may contribute to progestin-resistant AH via analysis of clinical data as well as investigation of hormonal regulation of endometrial gene and protein expression. We conducted a retrospective review of women with AH (n=63) compared to those with benign hyperplasia (BH) (n=73), which has a significantly lower risk of progression to malignant disease. Subsequently, we analyzed a sub-cohort of women with progestin-responsive …

Background: Pathological fractures of the femoral shaft are devastating complications of metastatic breast cancer that afflict a myriad of women worldwide. Those affected suffer from debilitating pain, loss of function, and diminished quality of life. Intramedullary nailing with locking screw fixation provides the foundation of femoral fracture repair. However, cancer-induced changes within the local osseous environment drastically impair normal bone healing, leading to nonunion, reduced quality of life, and delays in medical oncologic care. At this time, comparatively little is known about the underlying mechanisms involved in impaired pathological fracture healing. A more thorough understanding of the influence breast cancer …

Pneumococcal pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. An increased susceptibility is due, in part, to compromised immune function. Zinc is required for proper immune function, and an insufficient dietary intake increases the risk of pneumonia. Our group was the first to reveal that the Zn transporter, ZIP8, is required for host defense. Furthermore, the gut microbiota that is essential for lung immunity is adversely impacted by a commonly occurring defective ZIP8 allele in humans. Taken together, we hypothesized that loss of the ZIP8 function would lead to intestinal dysbiosis and impaired host defense against pneumonia. To …

Journal Articles: Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has given rise to one of the largest pandemics, affecting millions worldwide. High neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios have been identified as an important correlate to poor recovery rates in severe COVID-19 patients. However, the mechanisms underlying this clinical outcome and the reasons for its correlation to poor prognosis are unclear. Furthermore, the mechanisms involved in healthy neutrophils acquiring a SARS-CoV-2-mediated detrimental role are yet to be fully understood. In this study, we isolated circulating neutrophils from healthy donors for treatment with supernates from infected epithelial cells and direct infection with SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. Infected epithelial cells …

Aldehyde Trapping By Adx-102 Is Protective Against Cigarette Smoke And Alcohol Mediated Lung Cell Injury, Carmen A. Ochoa, Claire Nissen, Deanna Mosley, Christopher Bauer, Destiny Jordan, Kristina L. Bailey, Todd A. Wyatt
Journal Articles: Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health
Most individuals diagnosed with alcohol use disorders smoke cigarettes. Large concentrations of malondialdehyde and acetaldehyde are found in lungs co-exposed to cigarette smoke and alcohol. Aldehydes directly injure lungs and form aldehyde protein adducts, impacting epithelial functions. Recently, 2-(3-Amino-6-chloroquinolin-2-yl)propan-2-ol (ADX-102) was developed as an aldehyde-trapping drug. We hypothesized that aldehyde-trapping compounds are protective against lung injury derived from cigarette smoke and alcohol co-exposure. To test this hypothesis, we pretreated mouse ciliated tracheal epithelial cells with 0–100 µM of ADX-102 followed by co-exposure to 5% cigarette smoke extract and 50 mM of ethanol. Pretreatment with ADX-102 dose-dependently protected against smoke and …

Generating long-lived mucosal and systemic antibodies through respiratory immunization with protective antigens encapsulated in nanoscale biodegradable particles could potentially decrease or eliminate the incidence of many infectious diseases, but requires the incorporation of a suitable mucosal immunostimulant. We previously found that respiratory immunization with a model protein antigen (LPS-free OVA) encapsulated in PLGA 50:50 nanoparticles (~380 nm diameter) surface-modified with complement peptide-derived immunostimulant 02 (CPDI-02; formerly EP67) through 2 kDa PEG linkers increases mucosal and systemic OVA-specific memory T-cells with long-lived surface phenotypes in young, naïve female C57BL/6 mice. Here, we determined if respiratory immunization with LPS-free OVA encapsulated in …

Although lung diseases typically result from long-term exposures, even a robust, one-time exposure can result in long-lasting consequences. Endotoxin is a ubiquitous environmental/occupational inflammatory agent often used to model airway inflammation. Using a murine model, the return to lung homeostasis following high dose inhalant lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10-100 μg) exposure were delineated over 2 weeks. LPS-induced rapid weight loss, release of proinflammatory mediators, and inflammatory cell influx with prolonged persistence of activated macrophages CD11c+CD11b+ and recruited/transitioning CD11cintCD11b+ monocyte-macrophages out to 2 weeks. Next, lung-delivered recombinant (r) interleukin (IL)-10 was intratracheally administered for 3 doses initiated …

Insufficient training, multiple manufacturers, and noninterchangeable products increase the risk of vaccine-related errors. Increasing the complexity are the addition of boosters with different doses, personnel new to the vaccine administration process, changes in dosing, easily misidentified labeling or products, vaccines given together, and the interchanging of booster products.2,3 As a result, there is an increased need to be alert in safety efforts with vaccine administration and storage. Pharmacy staff members must work together to improve safety and prevent vaccine-related errors.

Introduction: Acute subdural hemorrhage (aSDH) in association with aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a severe disease with an incidence of 0.5% to 7.9% of all SAH. Due to the rarity of aneurysmal aSDH, it remains difficult to define a comprehensive management protocol. In this case review, following the CARE guidelines, we show the hybrid management of this pathology to know the importance of using different types of neurosurgical treatments in case of two severe diseases in critical patients.
We present two patients who developed sudden onset cephalea and neurological impairment secondary to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage associated with acute subdural hematoma. …

The communication of scientific findings in a young discipline in the evolution of knowledge about the human nervous system, has had a consistent and significant advance. This interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary vision has been a fundamental educational axis in the development of neurosurgery in terms of innovation, scientific progress, technological development and quality of patient care. It is therefore essential that scientific writing and communication channels continue to preserve these quality standards, to validate without bias and with certainty, the value and strength of the advances of neurosurgery as a science.

Background: Active Functional Mapping (AFM) is the gold standard method for localizing cortical and subcortical brain functional areas and tracts. By definition, it requires direct application of controlled electrical stimuli under established protocols. Nevertheless, it entails inherent risks, such as causing intraoperative seizures. On the other hand, Passive Functional Mapping (PFM) doesn´t require electrical stimulation of the nervous system. PFM is based on the knowledge that brain metabolism generates different electromagnetic radiation patterns depending on its metabolism, that are invisible to the human eye, but infrared thermographic cameras can show those changes related to brain activity without the use of …

Nowadays, an apprentice of neurosurgery has to complete long and different pathways of education. The encounter between the schools of Napoli and Tucuman, make us identify a common strategy of neurosurgical education. In attempt of defining the philosophy behind it we attempt a comparison in between the life and training of a modern neurosurgeon and the character of a tale of Borges (i.e. Ts'ui Pên). As neurosurgeons of the 21st century we must be like the inextricable Ts'ui Pên.

As clinicians, we rely on various imaging methods to identify abnormal brain lesions. We can distinguish this myriad of neurological disorders by using imaging alone or together with either or both electrophysiological monitoring and direct cortical stimulation. This last alternative is the most frequently used approach to diagnosing brain lesions requiring awake craniotomies for adequate management. Awake craniotomies have become the standard of care for focal lesions, including vascular malformations like cavernous angiomas, intrinsic brain tumors, gliomas, vasculitic brain lesions, postinfectious brain lesions, brain metastasis, and also for epilepsy surgery. Surgery for epileptic patients requires multidisciplinary team interactions and a …
