Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Uncovering The Benefits Of Naturalistic Blue-Depleted Lighting In Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Sam P. Cotton
Symposium of Student Scholars
With exponential technological advances, hospitals are tasked with prioritizing which expensive innovations truly impact as many patients as possible to give them the greatest chance of recovering and discharge them earlier. It is no surprise that most of the attention is focussed on pharmaceutical drugs and a variety of different equipment and machinery, but hospital facilities should look into simpler additions that can aid every patient admitted. The use of naturalistic blue-wavelength lighting is something that can benefit each patient’s recovery immensely. Multiple studies have proven positive effects that blue-depleted lighting compared to standard indoor fluorescent lighting has lowered stress …
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Symposium of Student Scholars
Pressure injuries are one of the most major challenges confronted in hospitals today – which can compromise a patient’s well-being, extend a patient's hospital admission, and can potentially contribute to disability or mortality. The prevention of pressure injuries is significant in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients; however, the prevention plan for pressure injury applications has been suboptimal as it causes a delay in medication delivery for nurses. The forms of care that are often used by healthcare professionals to improve HAPIs (hospital-acquired pressure injuries) are pressure preventative bundles – which are a set of evidence-based practices that are implemented reliably …
Fall Reduction Strategies For Older Community Dwelling Americans, Heather L. Roach
Fall Reduction Strategies For Older Community Dwelling Americans, Heather L. Roach
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Each year millions of older adults fall, and one out of five falls result in an injury that requires medical attention. In 2015 medical costs associated with falls was over $50 billion. Falls and specifically fall related injury in the older American population is a public health burden. There are many modalities that are implemented to reduce falls including management of underlying medical conditions, exercise regimens, supplementation, medication modifications, and home modifications. This project worked to identify which modalities had the greatest impact on falls. The goal of the information obtained is to inform practitioners and public health professionals that …
The Food Environment: Examining The Proximity Of Crimes To Food Stores, Nina Diamond
The Food Environment: Examining The Proximity Of Crimes To Food Stores, Nina Diamond
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Food insecurity is a persistent and widespread issue in the United States. Individuals who are food insecure are more likely to develop chronic diseases due to their dietary habits, which tend to consist of ultra-processed foods. For many individuals, these habits are not by choice, but are the result of a lack of access to healthy foods. Both geographical and financial access issues often lead to these unhealthy diet choices, which increase an individual’s risk of morbidity and mortality. While the issue of food insecurity is complex, it is not often observed in the context of violence. Many food insecure …
The Emotional Well-Being Of Menstruating Women In South Asia: A Rapid Systematic Review, Payal Patel
The Emotional Well-Being Of Menstruating Women In South Asia: A Rapid Systematic Review, Payal Patel
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
In South Asia, many girls and women experience period poverty which is defined to be a lack of access to or affordability of menstrual hygiene products, washing facilities, and disposal methods. There is also a lack of education and conversation that surrounds menstruation, leading to there being stigma and taboo. With an absence of Wash, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, women and girls in South Asia are unable to change their pads safely and privately, have access to clean water, and successfully manage their hygiene and health. Apart from the lack of education and WASH facilities, there are also unfair …
A Rapid Systemic Review Of The Significance Of Parental Awareness Of Children’S Oral Health On The Prevalence Of Dental Caries In Saudi Arabia, Nasser Albishi
A Rapid Systemic Review Of The Significance Of Parental Awareness Of Children’S Oral Health On The Prevalence Of Dental Caries In Saudi Arabia, Nasser Albishi
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Dental caries in children has been identified as a public health challenge in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Among those factors associated with their presence is the role that parents play in their children’s oral hygiene practices and how much it affects their development. The knowledge and awareness levels of the parents when it comes to maintaining proper oral hygiene in their children are still limited in the KSA, and a well-rounded characterization of these levels is needed for the problem to be addressed. Hence, a rapid systematic review was conducted to synthesize the evidence from published articles and …
Maternal Healthcare Utilization Among Pregnant Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence: A Rapid Systematic Review, Gabrielle Harb
Maternal Healthcare Utilization Among Pregnant Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence: A Rapid Systematic Review, Gabrielle Harb
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) impacts millions of pregnant women every year, and IPV is associated with adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. Previous studies have suggested that women experiencing IPV during pregnancy are less likely to access maternal healthcare services. Still, no consensus has been found, particularly within understudied low-and middle-income countries. This rapid systematic review identifies and examines evidence related to maternal healthcare utilization among women experiencing IPV in studies from 2015 to the present. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus, and 1797 unique records were identified. After reviewing abstracts and full texts, 28 studies were …
Process Mapping: The "One Best Way" To Improve Public Health Interventions, Adam T. Thompson
Process Mapping: The "One Best Way" To Improve Public Health Interventions, Adam T. Thompson
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Process mapping (PM) is a quality improvement (QI) systems-level intervention used to analyze workflows in a variety of industries. PM is a robust improvement strategy but there is poor evidence for its effectiveness within healthcare QI projects. Evidence also suggests that there is variation in the implementation of PM likely affecting the value derived from the practice. In 2021, Antonacci, et al., proposed an empirical framework to guide the implementation, reporting, and evaluating of PM within healthcare QI projects. Informed by the empirical framework for process mapping (EFPM), the aim of this capstone was to enhance the value derived from …
The Impact Of Doulas On Birth Outcomes: A Rapid Systematic Review, Heather Higgins
The Impact Of Doulas On Birth Outcomes: A Rapid Systematic Review, Heather Higgins
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Although most pregnancies in the United States are uncomplicated, adverse birth outcomes are more common in the U.S. than any other developed country (CDC, n.d.). The use of doula care during labor and delivery has shown to be effective in reducing adverse birth outcomes. A rapid systematic review was conducted to consolidate information on the effectiveness doulas have on certain adverse birth outcomes. These adverse birth outcomes included, low-birth weight, preterm birth, caesarean sections, shorter laboring time, and epidural use. The review of the literature was conducted using PubMed and search terms. PRISMA guidelines were followed and out of the …

Cu Anschutz Digital Collections Migration: From Dspace To Hyku, Raven Morrigan
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
Strauss Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus was part of the regional group of repositories called Mountain Scholar using DSpace when the lead for Mountain Scholar, Colorado State University (CSU), announced that they could no longer afford to support the Mountain Scholar instance. All the libraries currently part of Mountain Scholar had to decide whether to migrate to ContentDM with CSU or strike out on their own. Strauss Library considered our options, and with University of Colorado Boulder using Samvera, decided to pursue migrating to Samvera. The library completed the migration to Hyku, an extension of Samvera, …

Leveraging Ir Materials For Pre- And Post-Conference Attendance, Amanda Schwartz
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
This presentation examines the process of building a conference collection on Digital Commons with a discussion on stakeholder collaboration, collection architecture, and promotion, and reciprocal benefit to both scholars and repository managers.
Conference collections enhance attendees' experiences by creating a live archive of conference materials, viewable both during and after the event. Collections provide meaningful metrics for interactions with conference materials, which exist as grey literature that may otherwise go unseen by wider audiences. Building conference collections vary in time and complexity, based on stakeholder needs and overall vision for the conference and its attendees. Creating conference collections that are …

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: Expanding Readership For Doctor Of Nursing Practice Projects, Sara Hoover
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
In 2017 the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library partnered with The George Washington University School of Nursing to create a permanent digital archive for their Doctor of Nursing Practice project collection in our instance of Digital Commons. DNP projects are a unique type of content because they provide important research about nursing practices, but often go unpublished elsewhere. The GW DNP collection now contains over 120 items that have been downloaded over 95,000 times and therefore we were eager to explore additional avenues for disseminating this content beyond our IR and its subsequent indexing platforms. In 2018 our library migrated to …

Implementing The Option For 8-Hour Shifts Compared To 12-Hour Shifts To Protect The Well-Being Of Nurses And Patients, Savannah G. Bison, Madison R. Harden
Scholars Week
This project addresses the negative aspects of twelve hour shifts within the nursing profession and how a change to eight hour shifts leads to decreased burnout, increased job satisfaction, and a more positive work-life balance. The term ‘nursing shortage’ is often improperly used to imply only a deficit in registered nurses across the country; however, it is instead due to practicing nurses leaving the profession before retirement, especially in bedside positions. Nurses are searching for different paths for multiple reasons, but a common factor among all of them is burnout caused by the current system in place. This project addresses …

Sea-Phages Research Opportunity, Sarah Ballarin
Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
Research opportunity targeted for freshmen and sophomores through the SEA-PHAGES program. The goal of the research is to discover new bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) to help combat antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Phages have also been widely used in the food industry to prevent microbial growth on certain foods and are currently being explored as a method for bioremediation of oil spills and wastewater treatment.
Last year, my research team discovered two new bacteriophages: Genamy16 and NovaSharks that were able to infect the bacteria Gordonia rubripertincta. These phages can possibly be used for …

Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
From May 9, 2022 till July 29, 2022, I served as a Research Intern at Pfizer. Specifically, I worked in the Vaccine Research and Development Sector in the High Throughput Clinical Immunoassays and Diagnostics Group (HCID). In this group, I was responsible for Phase 3 testing of clinical trial material for the Covid-19 Vaccine. Over this time, I learned a great deal about the process of vaccine production from start to finish. Additionally, I was able to make numerous connections. This is definitely an experience I would recommend to others.
