A Needs Assessment & Implementation Strategy Of The Emergency Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate., Nancy Wilding
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Nurse Practitioners have been utilized to meet the growing needs of emergency departments during the shortage of Emergency Medicine-trained physicians. Stakeholders have recognized the benefits that Nurse Practitioners (NP) bring to Emergency Departments (ED) in providing quality, evidence-based, cost-effective quality care. However, there is a confusion of the emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) role and scope of practice by facilities, physicians, state boards of nursing, credentialing bodies, and patients that limit the ENP from practicing at their full scope of practice. To establish the role and expand the NPs' knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the ED setting, a …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Serotonin Syndrome (SS) is recognized by a combination of mental status changes, neuromuscular hyperactivity, and autonomic hyperactivity (Volpi-Abadie, Kaye, & Kaye, 2013). Despite the severity and commonality of SS, it is an under reported and an under treated condition (Boyer, 2018). The purpose of this project was to 1) implement an education module on SS using a pretest and posttest design to increase LTC staff knowledge, and 2) evaluate the effectiveness (e.g., confidence level, satisfaction) of the intervention among nursing staff. Method: An education module was implemented focusing on recognizing and treating SS in aging adults. A pretest-posttest design …
Implementation Of A Safety Planning Intervention On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit., Kevin Luke Houser
Implementation Of A Safety Planning Intervention On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit., Kevin Luke Houser
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: In 2017, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. There are multiple interventions used for individuals at risk for suicide. No-suicide contracts are commonly used by clinicians who treat individuals at high risk for suicide, but there is no evidence supporting this intervention in preventing suicides. A safety planning intervention has been shown to decrease the risk of suicide in individuals at high risk for suicide by helping individuals recognize warning signs of a suicidal crisis, use their internal coping strategies, and contact social network or community resources to assist in reducing suicidal thoughts. …
Breastfeeding Education In The Postpartum Period., Kiersten Proctor

The opioid epidemic is a growing crisis, the US consumes a majority of the worlds opioid supply. There are an estimated 100,000,000 opioid dependent persons and according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) over 7 million of those individuals also have an overlapping mental illness which further complicates treatment for this population. In the inpatient setting there is a great need to assess the opioid dependent patient and identify withdrawal signs and symptoms. There are many challenges especially within the ICU when recognizing these patients. Patients can require mechanical ventilation and intravenous sedation and pain medication which consist of …

Pharmacy Practice & Administration
The purpose of continuity planning is to ensure that dispensing operations continue, that pharmacy information systems’ data remain protected and accessible, and that telecommunications to support critical organization function during and after business interruption. Interruptions can occur for various reasons, such as earthquakes, fires, flooding, hurricanes, pandemics, power loss, tornadoes, and wildfires. Devising a crisis continuity plan can enable pharmacies to continue to provide patient care, ensure staff safety, and maintain financial viability after a disaster. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the resulting business closures brought about by the shutdown have highlighted this need to plan for all …
Modifying The Open Visitation Policy In The Adult Intensive Care Unit To Improve Patient, Family, And Nurse Satisfaction., Elizabeth Blandford
Modifying The Open Visitation Policy In The Adult Intensive Care Unit To Improve Patient, Family, And Nurse Satisfaction., Elizabeth Blandford
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Open visitation within adult intensive care units (ICUs) has recently replaced restricted visitation to further support patient and family centered care (PFCC) and improve satisfaction. The involvement of the patient or designated person in healthcare decisions and activities, decreases patient anxiety and stress, and can improve recovery. However, with the initiation of open visitation, many ICU patients, families and nursing staff are feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with the new issues that are arising. Decreased productive sleep, increased incidences of delirium, and constant overstimulation can cause patients and families to feel like recovery is unattainable. Nursing workflow is becoming dysfunctional, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is recognized as one of the most common complications following childbirth. Despite evidence-based recommendations to screen for postpartum depression in pediatric primary care, screening rates during well-child visits remain at less than 50%. Pediatric providers have consistently identified barriers to screening mothers for PPD. Methods: A multifaceted educational intervention was implemented that focused on screening for PPD during well-child visits and oriented providers to resources and a local referral process for mothers who screened positive. A pretest-posttest design was used to measure provider knowledge, confidence, and awareness in screening, utilizing available resources and a local referral …
Feasibility Of Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Trained Service Dog Provider Assessment Guide., Cassandra Lee
Feasibility Of Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Trained Service Dog Provider Assessment Guide., Cassandra Lee
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
American healthcare is costing more, and patients are living with more complex chronic conditions. For many, alternative therapies such as trained service dogs provide a valuable complement to standard treatments. Many providers are unaware of the role a service dog can play in healthcare outside of visual impairment, as well as contraindications and concerns their use may bring. The use of service dogs is still considered by some to be complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) since it is not a part of usual medical practice and is not commonly taught within conventional medical education. The purpose of this project was …

Comparison Of Sars-Cov-2 To Sars-Cov, Mers, And Influenza A: A Systematic Review, Debbie Calabrese
Comparison Of Sars-Cov-2 To Sars-Cov, Mers, And Influenza A: A Systematic Review, Debbie Calabrese
Health Informatics Student Papers and Projects
Differences and similarities are examined among SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV-1, MERS and influenza A, in the context of transmissibility. Characteristics specific to the respective pathogens prove invaluable as they set the stage for intervention and management. SARS-CoV-2 bears similarities to other recently emerged infectious diseases in basic virologic ways, yet is distinctly different in terms of viral transmission dynamics. These differences arise from genomic qualities and properties specific to the virus. As ACE2 receptors are determinants for attachment and spread of the virus, and their role throughout tissues in the body is vast, an understanding of organ-level pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial …

Copyright © 2020 the American Physiological Society Pannexin 1 (PANX1) is a ubiquitously expressed, channel-forming protein found in a number of tissues throughout the body (e.g., lung, vasculature, liver, central nervous system, immune system) that is important in many key physiological and immune responses (18, 55). PANX1 channels passively flux ATP (predominantly), multiple metabolites, and likely other small anions (37, 39). PANX1 channels regulate inflammation and host responses to several pathogens, including viruses (36, 42, 53). While there is currently no evidence suggesting novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and PANX1 directly interact, there is an urgent need …
