Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation has been shown to reversibly alter blood-brainbarrier (BBB) permeability. It is widely used for the treatment of cluster headaches in Europe and iswell tolerated in humans. The therapeutic potential for SPG stimulation in other central nervoussystem (CNS) diseases has yet to be explored. Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) remains one of themost difficult primary CNS neoplasms to treat, with an average survival of approximately 18 months atthe time of diagnosis. Since 2004, the gold standard of treatment for GBM in the United States includessurgery followed by treatment with temozolomide (TMZ) and radiation. We sought to determine ifSPG stimulation …

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak places perinatal women at higher risk of developing anxiety and depression. Uncertainty, fear, and confusion in medical, social, economic, occupational and political aspects of life in the US add to existing stressors that perinatal women experience. To optimize the quality of perinatal care during the pandemic, appropriate mental health interventions must be implemented to prevent and alleviate perinatal anxiety and depression and improve maternal and infant outcomes. Measures include increased screening, non-pharmacologic and/or pharmacologic interventions and the use of telehealth for care delivery.

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
A major portion of individuals affected by traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) experience one or more types of chronic neuropathic pain (NP), which is often intractable to currently available treatments. The availability of reliable behavioral assays in pre-clinical models of SCI-induced NP is therefore critical to assess the efficacy of new potential therapies. Commonly used assays to evaluate NP-related behavior in rodents, such as Hargreaves thermal and von Frey mechanical testing, rely on the withdrawal response to an evoked stimulus. However, other assays that test spontaneous/non-evoked NP-related behavior or supraspinal aspects of NP would be highly useful for a more …

The coronavirus pandemic has not only gripped the scientific community in the search for a vaccine or a cure but also in attempts using statistics and association analysis—to identify environmental factors that increase its potency. A study by Ogen (Sci Total Environ 726:138605, 2020a) explored the possible correlation between coronavirus fatality and high nitrogen dioxide exposure in four European countries—France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Meanwhile, another study showed the importance of nitrogen dioxide along with population density in determining the coronavirus pandemic rate in England. In this follow-up study, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was introduced in conjunction with other variables …

Following Patients With Severe Coronary Artery Calcifications Detected By Low-Dose Ct Scan For Lung Cancer Screening, Amry Majeed, Christine Shusted, Brooke Ruane, Julie Barta
Phase 1
Introduction:
Recommendations for lose-dose CT screening for lung cancer (LC) targets a population at concomitant risk for coronary disease. Coronary artery calcifications (CAC) are an independent predictor of cardiovascular events among screening patients, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) was the leading cause of death in the National Lung Screening Trial. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that patients with severe CAC undergo more risk factor modification when seen by a cardiologist.
Methods:
A chart review assessing patients found to have severe CAC on screening LDCT between January 2018 and April 2019 was conducted. Patient demographics, medical history, and …

The VAD Journal
We present the first reported case of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) pump thrombosis in the setting of the coronavirus pandemic. We describe the clinical features of the case which helped to differentiate coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) from LVAD pump thrombosis. The patient is 56-year-old female supported by destination LVAD therapy. She was originally implanted with a HeartMate II device in 2015 and underwent two pump exchanges in 2017 and 2019 for pump thrombosis, despite medication adherence. Shortly after routine lab work revealed near doubling of her lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, she tested positive for COVID-19. She then developed power …

Protocol For Isolation Of Cardiac Interstitial Cells From Adult Murine Hearts For Unbiased Single Cell Profiling., Elvira Forte, Sandra Daigle, Nadia Rosenthal
Faculty Research 2020
Interstitial cells have a crucial role in cardiac fibrosis and repair of the mammalian heart. Single-cell profiling using droplet-based technology has revolutionized the investigation of cell states and identities. Here, we present a protocol for the efficient isolation of high-quality live nucleated non-cardiomyocytes from adult murine heart, for unbiased single-cell RNA sequencing using 10× Chromium technology. This protocol has been applied to homeostatic and injured hearts from different mouse strains. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Forte et al. (2020).

The essential G1-cyclin, CCND1, is a collaborative nuclear oncogene that is frequently overexpressed in cancer. D-type cyclins bind and activate CDK4 and CDK6 thereby contributing to G1-S cell-cycle progression. In addition to the nucleus, herein cyclin D1 was also located in the cytoplasmic membrane. In contrast with the nuclear-localized form of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1NL), the cytoplasmic membrane-localized form of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1MEM) induced transwell migration and the velocity of cellular migration. The cyclin D1MEM was sufficient to induce G1-S cell-cycle progression, cellular proliferation, and colony formation. The cyclin D1MEM was sufficient to induce phosphorylation of the serine threonine …
