Women’s Health Articles
Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in women and is often associated with decreased quality of life. It is important to consider a range of wide differential diagnoses when evaluating a patient presenting with presumed with UI. This case describes a patient referred to urogynecology for urinary incontinence caused by a common, benign and usually asymptomatic gynecologic condition: nabothian cysts. However, based on presentation and imaging, there was concern about a more serious condition: adenoma malignum. This case emphasizes the importance of considering a wide range of differential diagnoses and describes several important differential diagnoses associated with urinary incontinence.

Neonates born premature or who suffer brain injury at birth often have oral feeding dysfunction and do not meet oral intake requirements needed for discharge. Low oral intake volumes result in extended stays in the hospital (>2 months) and can lead to surgical implant and explant of a gastrostomy tube (G-tube). Prior work suggests pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with motor activity accelerates functional improvements after stroke, and transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS) has emerged as promising noninvasive form of VNS. Pairing taVNS with bottle-feeding rehabilitation may improve oromotor coordination and lead to improved oral intake volumes, ultimately avoiding the …

Ideology Affects Trust In Science Agencies During A Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford
Ideology Affects Trust In Science Agencies During A Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford
Carsey Publications
In this perspectives brief, authors Lawrence Hamilton and Thomas Safford discuss the importance of government and public respect for scientific advice in mitigating the impacts of COVID-19. Striking political divisions in attitudes toward science have recently been evident in U.S. government statements and actions regarding the pandemic, and in opinions or behavior reported by general-public surveys. Although the COVID-19 crisis is breaking news, these political divisions in respect for science during a pandemic have deeper roots. A nationwide survey conducted by Carsey School researchers in 2016, immediately after the elections, found 25-point gaps between Trump and Clinton voters, or between …

Reproductive Health
This brief presents findings from two models of workers’ health education programs implemented by the Evidence Project/Population Council in Egypt. The two interventions aimed to increase family planning (FP) service demand among young people aged 18–35 in Port Said and urban Souhag. In Port Said, male and female factory workers who were trained as peer educators shared family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) information with fellow factory workers, distributed communication materials, and provided referrals to infirmary nurses trained in FP counseling. In Souhag, male and female peer educators were trained to provide integrated FP/RH and livelihood workshops to job seekers. Results of …

Many human viral diseases are a consequence of a zoonotic event. Some of the diseases caused by these zoono- tic events have affected millions of people around the world, some of which have resulted in high rates of mor- bidity/mortality in humans. Changes in the viral proteins that function as ligands of the host receptor may pro- mote the spillover between species. The most recent of these zoonotic events that have caused an ongoing epi- demic of high magnitude is the Covid-19 epidemics caused by SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to de- termine the mutation(s) in the sequence …

Exploring The Experiences Of Community Health Workers In The Dominican Republic Using Photovoice, Johnathan Steppe
Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations
In order to mitigate the growing health worker shortage, many low-middle income countries (LMICs) use community health workers (CHWs) to extend health services to underserved communities. Community health workers are laypersons with minimal training who provide basic health services for they communities in which they live. Although past research has demonstrated that CHWs can provide appropriate care that contributes to positive health outcomes, many CHW programs fail to achieve long-term sustainability. As the largest group of health professionals, nurses often work closely with CHWs, and are therefore well-positioned to support sustainability of CHW programs.
The purpose of this participatory action …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: The annual global neonatal mortality stands at 2.5 million deaths, 1 million of them dying within the first day of life. An additional 2.6 million are stillborn globally, the majority of them due to intrapartum events. Optimal fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring has the potential to timely detect fetuses at risk and, if coupled with timely obstetric responses may save more newborns. Moyo is a new Doppler with nine crystals capable of monitoring FHR both intermittently and continuously.
Aim: To assess women’s and midwives’ opinions on the use of Moyo for intrapartum FHR monitoring.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional …
The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll
The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The high prevalence of performing arts injuries is an acknowledged challenge facing the performing arts medicine community. The injuries seem to affect string players the most among orchestral musicians, specifically violinists and violists. The asymmetrical posture, head and neck displacement, and spinal displacement required by the posture to play violin and viola can lead to discomfort or injury in the performer. Performance related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) can have an adverse impact on the life of a musician, preventing them from performing or making it uncomfortable. While there is a large body of research on PRMDs relating to adult musicians, there …

Early work in rodents highlighted the gut microbiota's importance in metabolic disease, including Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), an incretin secreted by L-cells lining the gastrointestinal epithelium, has important functions: promoting insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, and β-cell mass, while inhibiting gastric emptying and appetite. We set out to identify microbial strains with GLP-1 stimulatory activity as potential metabolic disease therapeutics. Over 1500 human-derived strains were isolated from healthy individuals and screened for GLP-1 modulation by incubating bacterial cell-free supernatants with NCI H716 L-cells. Approximately 45 strains capable of increasing GLP-1 were discovered. All GLP-1 positive …

Transposable elements (TEs) comprise a large proportion of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Here, we employed CRISPR to delete a short interspersed nuclear element (SINE) in Malat1, a cancer-associated lncRNA, to investigate its significance in cellular physiology. We show that Malat1 with a SINE deletion forms diffuse nuclear speckles and is frequently translocated to the cytoplasm. SINE-deleted cells exhibit an activated unfolded protein response and PKR and markedly increased DNA damage and apoptosis caused by dysregulation of TDP-43 localization and formation of cytotoxic inclusions. TDP-43 binds stronger to Malat1 without the SINE and is likely 'hijacked' by cytoplasmic Malat1 to the …

Gender Differences In The Knowledge-Base Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Kayla Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that the earlier a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is diagnosed, the better their chances for improved functioning. Previous studies have shown the importance of early intervention and parents’ roles in recognizing ASD in their children. Prior studies have not, however, examined which parent recognized the early warning signs. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to discover which gender had a better understanding of the early indicators of ASD. The primary investigator administered an online true/false and multiple-choice questionnaire regarding the developmental milestones associated with ASD to 110 students at Arkansas State University. The female …
