Background
Starting from a forensic problem, Homer et al. showed that it was possible to detect if an individual contributes only 0.5% of the DNA in a pool. The finding was extended to prove the possibility of detecting whether a subject participated in a small homogeneous GWAS. We denote this as the detection of a subject belonging to a certain cohort (SBCC). Subsequently, Visscher and Hill showed that the power to detect SBCC signal for an ethnically homogeneous cohort depends roughly on the ratio of the number of independent markers and total sample size. However, it …

A Preliminary Longitudinal Study Of White Matter Alteration In Cocaine Use Disorder Subjects, Liangsuo Ma, Joel L. Steinberg, Qin Wang, Joy M. Schmitz, Edward L. Boone, Ponnada A. Narayana, F. Gerard Moeller
Radiology Publications
Background
Previous diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have consistently shown that subjects with cocaine use disorder (CocUD) had altered white matter microstructure in the corpus callosum. It is believed that these alterations are due to preexisting factors, chronic cocaine use, or both. However, there is no published longitudinal DTI study on human cocaine users yet which could shed light on the relationship between cocaine use and DTI findings.
Methods
This study used a longitudinal design and DTI to test if the white matter microstructure shows quicker alteration in CocUD subjects than controls. DTI data were acquired from eleven CocUD subjects …

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Publications
Background
Locomotor adaptation enables walkers to modify strategies when faced with challenging walking conditions. While a variety of neurological injuries can impair locomotor adaptability, the effect of a lower extremity amputation on adaptability is poorly understood.
Objective
Determine if locomotor adaptability is impaired in persons with unilateral transtibial amputation (TTA).
Methods
The locomotor adaptability of 10 persons with a TTA and 8 persons without an amputation was tested while walking on a split-belt treadmill with the parallel belts running at the same (tied) or different (split) speeds. In the split condition, participants walked for 15 minutes with the respective belts …

Pediatrics Publications
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is an important opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients and a major cause of congenital birth defects when acquired in utero. In the 1990s, four chimeric viruses were constructed by replacing genome segments of the high passage Towne strain with segments of the low passage Toledo strain, with the goal of obtaining live attenuated vaccine candidates that remained safe but were more immunogenic than the overly attenuated Towne vaccine. The chimeras were found to be safe when administered to HCMV-seronegative human volunteers, but to differ significantly in their ability to induce seroconversion. This suggests that chimera-specific genetic differences …

Chronic Health Conditions As A Risk Factor For Falls Among The Community-Dwelling Us Older Adults: A Zero-Inflated Regression Modeling Approach, Yoshita Paliwal, Patricia W. Slattum, Scott M. Ratliff
Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science Publications
Falls are an important health concern among older adults due to age-related changes in the body. Having a medical history of chronic health condition may pose even higher risk of falling. Only few studies have assessed a number of chronic health conditions as risk factor for falls over a large nationally representative sample of US older adults. In this study, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2014 participants aged 65 years and older (n = 159,336) were evaluated. It was found that 29.7% (n = 44,550) of the sample experienced at least one fall and 16.3% (n = 20,444) …

There has been a call for increased integration of basic and clinical sciences during preclinical years of undergraduate medical education. Despite the recognition that clinical simulation is an effective pedagogical tool, little has been reported on its use to demonstrate the relevance of basic science principles to the practice of clinical medicine. We hypothesized that simulation with an integrated science and clinical debrief used with early learners would illustrate the importance of basic science principles in clinical diagnosis and management of patients.Small groups of first- and second-year medical students were engaged in a high-fidelity simulation followed by a comprehensive debrief …

Burnout-Depression Overlap: A Study Of New Zealand Schoolteachers, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Mayor, Eric Laurent
Publications and Research
We examined the overlap of burnout with depression in a sample of 184 New Zealand schoolteachers. Burnout and depressive symptoms were strongly correlated with each other (r = .73; disattenuated correlation: .82) and moderately correlated with dysfunctional attitudes, ruminative responses, and pessimistic attributions. All the participants with high frequencies of burnout symptoms were identified as clinically depressed. Suicidal ideation was reported by 36% of those participants. Three groups of teachers emerged from a two-step cluster analysis: “low burnout-depression,” “medium burnout-depression,” and “high burnout-depression.” The correlation between the affective-cognitive and somatic symptoms of depression was similar in strength to the burnout-depression …

Combat Vascular Trauma_ From Characterization To Innovation.Pdf, Shane Smith
Data and Test Instruments
The way that soldiers are injured in modern conflicts has changed. Bullet and ballistic weapons are causing fewer casualties, and more commonly Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) are injuring them. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the injury pattern of the antipersonnel IED (AP-IED) in victims from the Afghanistan conflict, to retrospectively examine the incidence and type of vascular trauma in a Canadian level 1 trauma center and to develop and novel device for control of junctional vascular injuries. The injury pattern of 100 consecutive AP-IED victims was recorded. Multiple amputations occurred in 70% of IED victims: 5 quadruple amputations, …

Curcumin Promotes Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Viability And Attenuates Tnf- -Induced Prostaglandin E2 Synthesis Via Cyclooxygenase-2 Suppression, Varittha Thongtan, Supaporn Suttamanatwong
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Background Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is the main mediator for receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-mediated osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption in periodontitis. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) secrete PGE2 in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from the turmeric plant, possesses an anti-inflammatory effect by downregulating key mediators of inflammation. Objectives This study examined the effect of curcumin on the process of PGE2 biosynthesis in TNF-α-stimulated BMSCs. Materials and methods To investigate curcumin cytotoxicity, mouse ST2 BMSCs were treated with 1-50 μM curcumin and cell viability was determined by the MTT assay. …

Childhood Obesity: Physiological And Psychological Implications And Ethical Responsibilities, Connie S. Lewis
Journal of Health Ethics
Childhood obesity continues to be a health concern in the United States with physiological and psychological consequences. Research conducted in schools may address the physiological effects and exacerbate negative psychological effects, including weight bias and stigmatization. In the home, children are dependent on parents/caregivers to provide a healthy diet and exhibit a healthy lifestyle. The ethical theory, ethics of care, emphasizes dependence and interdependence on others, and ethical and moral responsibilities in the parent/child relationship. The assurance of ethical considerations involving children in research and parental provision for healthy dietary provision is of utmost importance. Any action or inaction that results …

Legalization Of Euthanasia And Physician-Assisted Dying: Condemnation Of Physician Participation, Samira Mazloom, Alireza Hamidian Jahromi, Bahar Bastani
Journal of Health Ethics
The topic of physician-assisted dying has always been a controversial topic raising a strong ethical dilemma. Currently six states in USA (Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Montana, California, Colorado) have developed regulations legalizing physician-assisted dying (medical euthanasia). We propose that physicians, because of their Hippocratic oath, should be exempted of participating in it. We suggest experts in professional assisted dying (“Euthanasia Specialists”) be ethically and to some degree medically trained to perform such a task when deemed appropriate.
