Type 2 Diabetes In Native Americans: The Influence Of Historical And Cultural Factors On Incidence, Prevalence, And Strategies For Patient Education, Disease Prevention, And Management, Tim Olsen

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Type 2 diabetes (DM2) was virtually nonexistent among Native American, Alaska Native, and Canadian First Nations people prior to the 1950s. Due to historical, cultural, environmental, and psychosocial factors, Native people suffer disproportionately higher rates of DM2 than other populations. This literature review aims to examine the influence of these factors and investigate whether insight and knowledge into them, as well as culturally sensitive approaches to disease education, prevention, and self-management can be beneficial to providers working among Native communities. The results suggested that culturally sensitive approaches are indeed of value in promoting more effective care, and that lack of …

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: While some risk factors for breast cancer are well-known, the influence of other factors, particularly virus infection, remains unclear. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is widespread in the general population, and both molecular and epidemiological evidence has indicated links between HCMV and breast cancer. The HCMV protein cmvIL-10 is a potent suppressor of immune function that has also been shown to promote proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells. In this study, the impact of cmvIL-10 on tumor cell invasion through a simulated basement membrane was investigated.

Results: MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells exhibited invasion through a matrigel layer that was significantly …

Background. Patients facing a high-stakes clinical decision are often confronted with an overwhelming array of options. High-quality decisions about treatment should reflect patients’ preferences as well as their clinical characteristics. Preference-assessment instruments typically focus on pre-selected clinical outcomes and attributes chosen by the investigator. Objective. We sought to develop a patient-centered approach to elicit and compare the treatment goals of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthcare providers (HCPs). Methods. We conducted five nominal group technique (NGT) meetings to elicit and prioritize treatment goals from patients and HCPs. Five to nine participants in each group responded silently to one question …

Objectives: The objective of this in vitro study is to compare the resistance to sliding (RS) of coated and uncoated orthodontic archwires in ceramic brackets at various water-immersion times and bracket angulations. Background: Tooth-colored orthodontic systems have been developed to meet the patient’s esthetic needs. Ceramic brackets and polymer-coated archwires have been shown to demonstrate higher RS than metal brackets and archwires in dry conditions. However, there is no study to address the RS of coated archwires depending on water-immersion times as in the oral cavity. Therefore, it is necessary to examine RS of coated archwires sliding in ceramic brackets …

Investigating Lip Protrusion Aesthetics By Comparing The Facial Profile View With An Oblique View, Barak Jones Jan 2017

Investigating Lip Protrusion Aesthetics By Comparing The Facial Profile View With An Oblique View, Barak Jones

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: Orthodontists strive to enhance facial esthetics. Notable orthodontists including Holdaway, Ricketts, Merrifield and more each made contributions to help diagnose facial disharmonies and improve treatment outcomes. Numerous studies have evaluated the face from two perspectives, frontal and profile. Orthodontic treatment can significantly transform a facial profile. Orthodontic literature has time and again compared photos, line drawings and silhouettes in order to define a harmonious profile. Some have concluded that a more protrusive lip profile than what had been outlined traditionally is now preferred. However, while this debate continues, in this dynamic world the profile perspective is not the most …

Tooth Size Comparison Between Citizens Of The Chickasaw Nation And Caucasians, Tyler Chance Devaughan Jan 2017

Tooth Size Comparison Between Citizens Of The Chickasaw Nation And Caucasians, Tyler Chance Devaughan

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objective The goal of this study is to establish normative tooth crown size (mesio-distal width) data for the Chickasaw Nation and demonstrate how it relates to Caucasian standards. Background: Tooth size ratios represent a diagnostic tool that allow for a prediction of treatment outcomes. A proper relationship of the total mesio-distal width of the maxillary dentition to the mesio- distal width of the mandibular dentition will favor an ideal post treatment occlusion. If a patient has a significant tooth size discrepancy between the dental arches, alignment of the teeth into this ideal occlusion may not be possible. Patients commonly receive …

Evaluation Of Microshear Bond Strength Of Light-Cured Composite For Cementation Of Ceramic Veneer, Khalid Motlaq

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Brief background and goal/ research question: Ceramic restorations were introduced as indirect restorative materials that combine high esthetics with superior mechanical properties. However, an important requirement for successful function of these restorations is adequate adhesion between the restoration material and tooth structure. The use of CAD/CAM restorations is steadily increasing, proper function and longevity of these restorations depends on good adhesion to the underlying substrate as well as operator technique. Preheated composite has been recommended by some clinicians and investigators for the adhesive luting of porcelain laminate veneers based on its good marginal adaptation and perceived superior mechanical durability when …

Evaluation Of The Pepfar/Usaid Asibonisane Community Responses Program In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

Few programs intended to improve HIV outcomes or modulate gender norms have been rigorously evaluated in South Africa’s informal settlements where nearly 400,000 people live in KwaZulu Natal province alone. There is limited evidence on how to implement large-scale HIV-prevention programming in these contexts. Project SOAR and partners are addressing these knowledge gaps by conducting an evaluation of the PEPFAR/USAID-funded Asibonisane Community Responses Program in South Africa. Specifically, the study will assess the effectiveness of this community-based HIV-prevention program in informal settlements throughout KwaZulu-Natal—one of four provinces where the program is being carried out. This study aims to influence the …

Athletic Participation And Academic Success In Junior College, Derek J. Staley

Master of Arts in Sport Management

The success or lack of success for student-athletes in the classroom has been a debate for a long time. Does athletic participation help or hinder academic success? Research is somewhat conflicted at the high school and college level whether athletic participation leads to higher academic achievement. A study done at the high school level seems to show some correlation, but studies done at the college level are somewhat inconclusive. This project is an attempt to clarify what happens when students participate in athletics at other college levels and what effect that participation has on academic achievement. This project will help …
