Factors Affecting Mental Health Seeking Behaviors Of Law Enforcement Officers, Vincent M. Haecker Feb 2017

Factors Affecting Mental Health Seeking Behaviors Of Law Enforcement Officers, Vincent M. Haecker

Dissertations

The intent of this study was to elicit perspectives from law enforcement counselors, clinicians, chaplains, and peer group leaders for factors affecting law enforcement officer’s (LEOs) seeking mental health assistance. The law enforcement and mental health communities have gone to great lengths to ensure assistance is available to LEOs in an effort to counter the stress and trauma associated with the policing profession. Past studies attempted to elicit LEOs attitudes on mental health services, generating mixed results and were unable to establish why available services were underutilized. This study employed a qualitative methodology to elicit perspectives on this phenomena from …

Fibronectin: How Its Aberrant Expression In Tumors May Improve Therapeutic Targeting, Jennifer Peyling Wang, Abigail Hielscher Feb 2017

Fibronectin: How Its Aberrant Expression In Tumors May Improve Therapeutic Targeting, Jennifer Peyling Wang, Abigail Hielscher

PCOM Scholarly Works

Fibronectin is a matrix glycoprotein which has not only been found to be over-expressed in several cancers, but has been shown to participate in several steps of tumorigenesis. The purpose of this review is to illustrate how aberrant fibronectin expression influences tumor growth, invasion, metastasis and therapy resistance. In particular, this review will focus on the interactions between cell receptor ligands and fibronectin and how this interaction influences downstream signaling events that aid tumor progression. This review will further discuss the possible implications of therapeutic drugs directed against fibronectin and/or cellular interactions with fibronectin and will additionally discuss novel approaches …

The Scoping Review Method: Mapping The Literature In “Structural Change” Public Health Interventions, Rosie Hanneke, Yuka Asada, Lisa D. Lieberman, Leah Christina Neubauer, Michael C. Fagan

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

This case discusses how we used scoping review methodology to map the literature in an emergent area of research, “structural change” public health interventions. Scoping reviews are similar to systematic reviews in both scale and rigor; both of these literature review methodologies are comprehensive approaches to reviewing the literature on a topic. However, while a systematic review attempts to answer a specific, targeted research question, a scoping review is designed to map and categorize all of the literature on a broad topic. For this reason, it is an excellent method to employ in emergent research areas, in which researchers have …

Evaluation Of [14c] And [13c]Sucrose As Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability Markers, Mohammad K. Miah, Ekram A. Chowdhury, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Non-specific quantitation of [14C]sucrose in blood and brain has been routinely used as a quantitative measure of the in vivo blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. However, the reported apparent brain uptake clearance (Kin) of the marker varies widely (∼100 fold). We investigated the accuracy of the use of the marker in comparison with a stable isotope of sucrose ([13C]sucrose) measured by a specific LC-MS/MS method. Rats received single doses of each marker, and the Kin values were determined. Surprisingly, the Kin value of [13C]sucrose was 6-7 fold lower than that …

Comparison Of The Hui3 And The Eq-5d-3l In A Nursing Home Setting, Tom Lung, Kirsten Howard, Christopher Etherton-Beer, Moira Sim, Gill Lewin, Glenn Arendts

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background:

Accurately assessing changes in the quality of life of older people living permanently in nursing homes is important. The multi-attribute utility instrument most commonly used and recommended to assess health-related quality of life in the nursing home population is the three-level EuroQol EQ-5D-3L. To date, there have been no studies using the Health Utilities Index Mark III (HUI3). The purpose of this study was to compare the level of agreement and sensitivity to change of the EQ-5D-3L and HUI3 in a nursing home population.

Methods:

EQ-5D-3L and HUI3 scores were measured as part of a cluster randomised controlled trial …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is the coefficient of variation of red blood cell size, considered to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to comprehensively synthesize previous studies on RDW and CVD outcomes through an overall and dose-response meta-analysis. PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched systematically for English and Chinese language publications up to November 30, 2015. We extracted data from publications matching our inclusion criteria for calculating pooled hazard ratio (HR), which was used to assess prognostic impact of RDW on CVD. Twenty-seven articles, consisting of 28 studies and 102,689 participants (mean age …

Boosting Of Hiv Envelope Cd4 Binding Site Antibodies With Long Variable Heavy Third Complementarity Determining Region In The Randomized Double Blind Rv305 Hiv-1 Vaccine Trial, David Easterhoff, M. Anthony Moody, Daniela Fera, Hao Cheng, Margaret Ackerman

Dartmouth Scholarship

The canary pox vector and gp120 vaccine (ALVAC-HIV and AIDSVAX B/E gp120) in the RV144 HIV-1 vaccine trial conferred an estimated 31% vaccine efficacy. Although the vaccine Env AE.A244 gp120 is antigenic for the unmutated common ancestor of V1V2 broadly neutralizing antibody (bnAbs), no plasma bnAb activity was induced. The RV305 (NCT01435135) HIV-1 clinical trial was a placebo-controlled randomized double-blinded study that assessed the safety and efficacy of vaccine boosting on B cell repertoires. HIV-1- uninfected RV144 vaccine recipients were reimmunized 6–8 years later with AIDSVAX B/E gp120 alone, ALVAC-HIV alone, or a combination of ALVAC-HIV and AIDSVAX B/E gp120 …

Research Brief: "Analysis Of Nutritional Habits And Intake Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Veterans With Peripheral Arterial Disease", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the nutritional intakes of veterans with peripheral arterial disease, and expands on previous studies. For policy and practice, the research shows that physicians should play a role in educating veterans about long-term effects of their nutritional intakes, and that the DoD and VHA should create an educational program about nutritional intake. Suggestions for future research include using daily or weekly food diaries to increase reporting accuracy and using a more representative sample in randomized controlled tests.

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Cell differentiation is associated with changes in chromatin organization and gene expression. In this study, we examine chromatin structure following differentiation of the human myeloid leukemia cell line (HL-60/S4) into granulocytes with retinoic acid (RA) or into macrophage with phorbol ester (TPA). We performed ChIP-seq of histone H3 and its modifications, analyzing changes in nucleosome occupancy, nucleosome repeat length, eu-/heterochromatin redistribution and properties of epichromatin (surface chromatin adjacent to the nuclear envelope). Nucleosome positions changed genome-wide, exhibiting a specific class of alterations involving nucleosome loss in extended (∼1kb) regions, pronounced in enhancers and promoters. Genes that lost nucleosomes at their …

Publications and Research

Osteosarcomas are malignant tumors of bone, most commonly seen in children and adolescents. Despite advances in modern medicine, the poor survival rate of metastatic osteosarcoma has not improved in two decades. In the present study we have investigated the effect of Riluzole on a human and mouse metastatic osteosarcoma cells. We show that LM7 cells secrete glutamate in the media and that mGluR5 receptors are required for the proliferation of LM7 cells. Riluzole, which is known to inhibit glutamate release, inhibits proliferation, induces apoptosis and prevents migration of LM7 cells. This is also seen with Fenobam, a specific blocker of …

BACKGROUND: The DiGeorge syndrome, the most common of the microdeletion syndromes, affects multiple organs, including the heart, the nervous system, and the kidney. It is caused by deletions on chromosome 22q11.2; the genetic driver of the kidney defects is unknown.

METHODS: We conducted a genomewide search for structural variants in two cohorts: 2080 patients with congenital kidney and urinary tract anomalies and 22,094 controls. We performed exome and targeted resequencing in samples obtained from 586 additional patients with congenital kidney anomalies. We also carried out functional studies using zebrafish and mice.

RESULTS: We identified heterozygous deletions of 22q11.2 in 1.1% …

The Effects Of Serum Starvation On Cell Cycle Synchronization, Negin Baghdadchi Feb 2017

The Effects Of Serum Starvation On Cell Cycle Synchronization, Negin Baghdadchi

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) provide a valuable model for studying organogenesis and recapitulating human diseases. Notably, genetic modification techniques can be harnessed to realize potential of these cells. hPSC display the features of indefinite self-renewal and the potential to differentiate into three germ layers, which holds great promise for regenerative medicine and human disease research. Genetic manipulation continues to be a powerful to study the properties of hPSC. Despite current advances in optimization of transfection procedures, genetic manipulation of hPSC remains a capricious process. On the other hand, controlled differentiation also yielded a variable and unpredictable efficiency in different …

Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Williams Feb 2017

Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Williams

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

The current process of intracranial radiosurgery treatment uses implanted titanium fiducials in the skull to assist in alignment of the patient. These fiducials add an element of physical and emotional stress to the patient, and scheduling the implantation procedures adds a delay of a few extra days before the radiosurgery procedure can begin. During the radiosurgery treatment, each proton beam is manually aligned by the therapist/physician with X-ray images and the fiducials that are visible on these images. This method of alignment can be time-intensive and requires personnel who are specifically trained in patient alignment. We propose a new method …
