The government which is the Ministry of Health through its regulations mandates the importance of patient safety. This can be seen from the mention of patient safety in the four articles in Undang-Undang Number 44 Year 2009 about Hospital and specifically in the Minister of Health Regulation. The importance of patient safety issues in hos pitals is not directly proportional to the performance indicators of the BLU Hospital written inPeraturan Direktur Jenderal Pembendaharaan Number 34 Year 2014 about the Guidelines for Performance Appraisal of Public Ser vice Bodies for Health Services. In this regulation, it can be seen that the …

Recent case reports in medical literatures suggest that more and more second-generation atypical antipsychotics (AAs) have been prescribed for off-label use; quetiapine (Brand name: Seroquel®) showed increase in its trend for off-label use. Little is known about the reasons behind this trend, although historical sedative and hypnotic prescription patterns suggest that despite relatively superior safety profiles of quetiapine (especially for movement disorders), it may be used for treating substance abuse disorder. In addition, recent studies have shown a strong potential for misuse and abuse (MUA) of quetiapine beyond Food and Drug Administration-approved indications. This includes drug-seeking behaviors, such …

Comparative Study On The In Vitro Effects Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Seaweed Alginates On Human Gut Microbiota, Shaofeng Bai, Huahai Chen, Liying Zhu, Wei Liu, Hongwei Yu, Xin Wang, Yeshi Yin
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Alginates pertain to organic polysaccharides that have been extensively used in food- and medicine-related industries. The present study obtained alginates from an alginate overproducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 mutant by screening transposon mutagenesis libraries. The interaction between bacterial and seaweed alginates and gut microbiota were further studied by using an in vitro batch fermentation system. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analysis indicated that both bacterial and seaweed alginates can be completely degraded by fecal bacteria isolated from study volunteers, indicating that a minor structural difference between bacterial and seaweed alginates (O-acetylation and lack of G-G blocks) didn’t affect the digestion of alginates by …

Background: Knowledge of utilization of health services and asso- ciated factors is important in planning and delivery of interventions to improve health services coverage. This knowledge is however limited in many developing countries. We determined the preva- lence and factors associated with health services utilization in a rural area of Kenya. Our findings inform the local health management in development of appropriately targeted interventions.
Methods: Design: Cluster sample survey. Population: Residents of Kaloleni sub-County in Kenya.
Participants/respondents: Household key informants. Outcomes: (i) History of illness for household members and (ii) health services utilization in the preceding month, (iii) factors associated …

We describe the steps taken and analysis applied in developing a local health policy agenda for the city of Quito, in Ecuador. In 2014, the Health Commissioner’s Office of the Municipality of Quito analyzed the city’s epidemiological health profiles, social determinants of health, the legal authority of the Municipality, and relevant literature to understand the city’s health burden and develop a Ten-Year Health Plan (2015–2025). Results revealed that Quito’s population suffered from noncommunicable chronic diseases (diabetes and hypertension) and identified the primary risk factors (poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and resulting overweight or obesity). Other common conditions included respiratory diseases, mental …

BACKGROUND: Guidelines support health care decision-making and high quality care and outcomes. However, their implementation is sub-optimal. Theory-informed, tailored implementation is associated with guideline use. Few guideline implementation studies published up to 1998 employed theory. This study aimed to describe if and how theory is now used to plan or evaluate guideline implementation among physicians.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted. MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were searched from 2006 to April 2016. English language studies that planned or evaluated guideline implementation targeted to physicians based on explicitly named theory were eligible. Screening and data extraction were done in …

Coping Strategies Used During An Extreme Antarctic Expedition, Nathan Smith, Florence Kinnafick, Ben Saunders
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
The present report documents the strategies used to deal with stress during an extreme Antarctic expedition. Coping strategies identified are based on experiences shared by the leader of the Scott Expedition and co-author of the report, Ben Saunders. A variety of problem- and emotion-focused techniques were utilized during the expedition and specific contextual and practical details are provided. Information offered in the article can be used to prepare future Antarctic expedition teams to manage stressors faced while undertaking extreme journeys in the higher latitudes.

Use Of Research By Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Salima Moez Meherali, Pauline Paul, Joanne Profetto-Mcgrath
The Qualitative Report
Research utilization (RU) is crucial to preparing the next generation of registered nurses, since they are expected to stay abreast of research, read and use existing research to improve their ability to solve problems, and make decisions independently in clinical settings. Also, baccalaureate nursing programs often identify RU as an expected curricular outcome. The purpose of this study was to identify nursing students’ perceptions about RU. In this study, we used a sequential mixed methods approach. In this paper, only qualitative analysis related to RU is reported. A qualitative descriptive design was used to address the study questions. A purposive …

Opening Up About Birth: An Autoethnographic Account Of Prolonged Labour, Petra B. Elias
The Qualitative Report
A woman’s first pregnancy can be both emotionally exciting and daunting. There are many changes to make, but there is little emotional support to adjust to the role, the focus being on the physical process which is most often managed medically (Spear, 2008; Zasloff, Schytt, & Waldenström, 2007) though warnings about what could occur are not routinely told (Kaitz, 2007, pp. 720-721). This paper presents an autoethnographic story of first time pregnancy and the unfolding labour. The methodology of autoethnography is a useful tool for conveying stories of lived experience at a level of detail often previously unrecorded, evoking for …

The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In any athletic event, the ability to appropriately distribute energy is essential to prevent premature fatigue prior to the completion of the event. In sport science literature this is termed “pacing.” Within the past decade, research aiming to better understand the underlying mechanisms influencing the selection of an athlete’s pacing during exercise has dramatically increased. It is suggested that pacing is a combination of anticipation, knowledge of the end-point, prior experience and sensory feedback. In order to better understand the role each of these factors have in the regulation of pace, studies have often manipulated various conditions known to influence …

Family Group Conferencing—Its Added Value In Mental Health Care, Gert Schout, Ellen Meijer, Gideon De Jong
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Worldwide, there is a growing emphasis on reducing coercion and involving social networks in the care of mental health clients. Nurses should encourage their clients to regain control over their lives, preferably with less coercion and with help from their social network. During four years, a Dutch evaluation study was deployed to determine the applicability of mobilising help from social networks of people with psychiatric problems. Specifically the potential of Family Group Conferencing was examined. In this discursive article the question, ‘what Family Group Conferencing adds to the existing methods that aim to reduce coercion in mental health care and …
