Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Smoking cessation following hospitalization for Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) significantly reduces subsequent mortality. Depressed mood is a major barrier to cessation post-ACS. Although existing counseling treatments address smoking and depression independently in ACS patients, no integrated treatment addresses both. We developed an integrated treatment combining gold standard cessation counseling with behavioral activation-based mood management; Behavioral Activation Treatment for Cardiac Smokers (BAT-CS). The purpose of this pilot randomized controlled trial was to test feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of BAT-CS vs. Standard of Care (SC). Methods: Participants were recruited during hospitalization for ACS and were randomly assigned to BAT-CS or …

Developing Fluorogen Activating Protein-Fluorescent Protein Fret Pairs For Live Cell Imaging, Genevieve Kate Phillips Apr 2017

Developing Fluorogen Activating Protein-Fluorescent Protein Fret Pairs For Live Cell Imaging, Genevieve Kate Phillips

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Fluorogen activating proteins (FAPs) are genetically encoded tags made from single chain antibody fragments (scFv) designed to bind fluorogens with high specificity. Both the fluorogen and FAP can be modified to provide flexibility in properties such as affinity, membrane permeability, spectra, and quantum yield. The fluorogen Malachite Green (MG) has two excitation peaks, the maximum at 630 nm and a secondary peak at 450 nm. The emission spectra of blue-emitting fluorescence proteins, such as mCerulean (mCer), overlap with the MG secondary peak, generating a FRET pair with large Stokes shift emission. Using 405 nm excitation of mCer, we observe acceptor …

Return To Nursing: A Meta-Synthesis Of Academic Bridging Programs’ Effect On Internationally Educated Nurses, Edward V. Cruz, Rhea Faye Felicilda-Reynaldo, C. Patricia Mazzotta

The Qualitative Report

This meta-synthesis explored the effect of bridging programs on internationally educated nurses (IENs). Eight papers that met the inclusion criteria were selected for this review. There were 437 participants from eight studies who come from different parts of the globe and who settled in either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. Using a grounded theory approach for data analysis, four effects of bridging programs on IENs were identified. These are: (a) the concepts from the regulatory body, the client-centred care; (b) do something better for us, for our future; (c) we have to learn English; and, (d) faculty, …

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton Apr 2017

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton

Nursing ETDs

Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Modeling The Trauma-Antisociality Relationship As Mediated By World Assumptions: Associations With Gender And Drinking Outcomes, Kathryn Fokas Apr 2017

Modeling The Trauma-Antisociality Relationship As Mediated By World Assumptions: Associations With Gender And Drinking Outcomes, Kathryn Fokas

Psychology ETDs

Previous research has established links between traumatic experiences and externalizing pathology including substance use and antisocial behavior, but little is known about potential mechanisms linking these phenomena. This study proposed a novel conceptual model linking these phenomena via the cognitive mechanism of negative world assumptions, or beliefs about the inherent dangerousness and unpredictability of life and others. Given previous mixed findings, this study also sought to explore potential interactions between gender and these phenomena. It was hypothesized that, within a sample of adults seeking alcohol treatment, world assumptions would mediate and gender would moderate the trauma-antisociality association. It also was …

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa-Derived Rhamnolipids And Other Detergents Modulate Colony Morphotype And Motility In The Burkholderia Cepacia Complex, Steve P. Bernier, Courtney Hum, Xiang Li, George A. O'Toole, Nathan A. Magarvey, Michael G. Surette Apr 2017

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa-Derived Rhamnolipids And Other Detergents Modulate Colony Morphotype And Motility In The Burkholderia Cepacia Complex, Steve P. Bernier, Courtney Hum, Xiang Li, George A. O'Toole, Nathan A. Magarvey, Michael G. Surette

Dartmouth Scholarship

Competitive interactions mediated by released chemicals (e.g., toxins) are prominent in multispecies communities, but the effects of these chemicals at subinhibitory concentrations on susceptible bacteria are poorly understood. Although Pseudomonas aeruginosa and species of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) can exist together as a coinfection in cystic fibrosis airways, P. aeruginosa toxins can kill Bcc species in vitro. Consequently, these bacteria become an ideal in vitro model system to study the impact of sublethal levels of toxins on the biology of typical susceptible bacteria, such as the Bcc, when exposed to P. aeruginosa toxins. Using P. aeruginosa spent medium …

Reduction In Activity By Noxious Chemical Stimulation Is Ameliorated By Immersion In Analgesic Drugs In Zebrafish, Javier Lopez-Luna, Qussay Al-Jubouri, Waleed Al-Nuaimy, Lynne U. Sneddon

Anesthesia and Analgesia Collection

Research has recently demonstrated that larval zebrafish show similar molecular responses to nociception to those of adults. Our study explored whether unprotected larval zebrafish exhibited altered behaviour after exposure to noxious chemicals and screened a range of analgesic drugs to determine their efficacy to reduce these responses. This approach aimed to validate larval zebrafish as a reliable replacement for adults as well as providing a high-throughput means of analysing behavioural responses. Zebrafish at 5 days postfertilization were exposed to known noxious stimuli: acetic acid (0.01%, 0.1% and 0.25%) and citric acid (0.1%, 1% and 5%). The behavioural response of each …

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd Background Reoperation rates are high after surgery for hip fractures. We investigated the effect of a sliding hip screw versus cancellous screws on the risk of reoperation and other key outcomes. Methods For this international, multicentre, allocation concealed randomised controlled trial, we enrolled patients aged 50 years or older with a low-energy hip fracture requiring fracture fixation from 81 clinical centres in eight countries. Patients were assigned by minimisation with a centralised computer system to receive a single large-diameter screw with a side-plate (sliding hip screw) or the present standard of care, multiple small-diameter cancellous screws. …

Harlem Hospital's Journey To Patient Navigation, Christine W. Thorpe Apr 2017

Harlem Hospital's Journey To Patient Navigation, Christine W. Thorpe

Publications and Research

This essay discusses the history of 20th century black migration to Harlem, New York and the utilization of Harlem Hospital. This examination is based on New York newspaper articles in the 1920’s. They tell the story, from a journalist’s perspective, of the challenges African Americans experienced in their interactions with Harlem Hospital. The implicit communication of segregation of Harlem Hospital at that time is connected to the development of patient navigation in the 1970’s. The creation of patient navigation will be discussed in the context of historical health disparities that are increasingly manifested today.

Novel Genetic Variants Associated With Child Refractory Esophageal Stricture With Food Allergy By Exome Sequencing., Min Yang, Min Xiong, Huan Chen, Lanlan Geng, Peiyu Chen, Jing Xie, Shui Qing Ye, Ding-You Li, Sitang Gong

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Refractory esophageal stricture (RES) may be attributed to food allergy. Its etiology and pathogenesis are not fully understood. Identification of novel genetic variants associated with this disease by exome sequencing (exome-seq) may provide new mechanistic insights and new therapeutic targets.

METHODS: To identify new and novel disease-associating variants, whole-exome sequencing was performed on an Illumina NGS platform in three children with RES as well as food allergy.

RESULTS: A total of 91,024 variants were identified. By filtering out 'normal variants' against those of the 1000 Genomes Project, we identified 12,741 remaining variants which are potentially associated with RES plus …

Considerations For The Use Of Medical Devices In Dermatology., Jordan Wang, Dorota Z. Korta, Christopher B. Zachary

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

This manuscript addresses the significant considerations concerning the development and use of medical devices in dermatology. With the rapidly growing demand and booming market for medical devices, especially lasers, it is crucial that dermatologists become familiar with the nuances associated with supporting clinical studies, consumer-driven marketing strategies, and the complex relationships that exist between physicians, industry, and consumers. An examination of these relationships includes an overview of the potential biases pertaining to advisory panels and treating clinicians. The aim of this paper is to serve as an introduction to the background of medical devices and to offer dermatologists important information …

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Background: Lymphomas are cancers that arise from the white blood cells and have been traditionally divided into two large subtypes: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. B-cell lymphoma is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma; almost 85% of patients with lymphoma have this variant. Lymphomas can potentially arise from any lymphoid tissue located in the body; however, primary adrenal non-Hodgkin lymphoma is extremely rare. We report the history, examination findings, and laboratory results of a 50-year-old man diagnosed with a primary left adrenal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Pakistani man presented to our hospital with progressively increasing pain …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Huntington's disease is a devastating, incurable neurodegenerative disease affecting up to 12 per 100,000 patients worldwide. The disease is caused by a mutation in the Huntingtin (Htt) gene. There is interest in reducing mutant Huntingtin by targeting it at the mRNA level, but the maximum tolerable dose and long-term effects of such a treatment are unknown. Using a self-complementary AAV9 vector, we delivered a mir-155-based artificial miRNA under the control of the chicken β-actin or human U6 promoter. In mouse brain, the artificial miRNA reduced the human huntingtin mRNA by 50%. The U6, but not the CβA promoter, produced the …
