Transitions of care are vulnerable points in patient care. With the volume of information transferred, quality of care and patient safety are at risk. Numerous attempts at standardization of transitions of care have been utilized; however no consensus regarding the optimal method has been reached. We developed a “watcher” model in addition to standard end of shift sign out. Patients at risk were identified by the day team and seen overnight by a senior and junior surgery resident, along with a nursing representative: either a bedside RN or nursing supervisor. We hypothesized that these midnight rounds could proactively identify patient …

Objectives:
We aimed to double the HCV screening rate of ‘baby-boomers’ admitted to the medicine teaching service at Methodist Hospital over the course of 6 months and demonstrate improved linkage to care for HCV RNA+ individuals.
Initial efforts were a collaboration between Emergency Medicine, where faculty had experience implementing an HIV screening program, and Gastroenterology, a key stakeholder in linkage to care. Our pilot period coincided with new state regulations mandating that hospitals implement HCV screening for inpatients. These new regulations dramatically altered the scope and goals of the project.

Ambulation Protocols Leading To Decreased Postoperative Complications And Hospital Stay, T. Olszewski, K. Noonan, H. Gold, G. Kelly, E. Youseef
House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)
Background:
In the postoperative course, patients are routinely encouraged to ambulate as frequently as possible. Typically in the hospital this can become burdensome to the staff and often becomes low priority. Patients are also not aware of the frequency and quality of the ambulation that is sufficient in the postoperative period. At present, patients on the surgical floor who are completely independent and without any devices (eg. Oxygen, nasogastric tubes, chest tubes) are freely able to ambulate at will although there is no reliable way to track this progress. Other patients with devices are limited to waiting for nursing or …

Introduction:
The I-PASS Handoff Bundle is an evidence based standardized set of educational materials designed to decrease handoff failures in patient care.
Two of every three "sentinel events", the most serious events reported to the Joint Commission, are due to failures of communication, including miscommunication during patient care handoffs.
Implementation of the I-PASS method results in decreased medical errors and preventable adverse events
There are few studies that evaluate this validated method in the context of a General Surgery resident program
We aim to implement the I-PASS system into the transition of care process for General Surgery residents at our …

This presentation will focus on an underutilized model of supportive care that can help bring back some of the human moments that can often be lost in delivering supportive oncology care. Handling the often complicated issues that arise in oncology care can take a toll on social workers and our oncology co-workers in other disciplines. In oncology care, especially in an outpatient setting, social workers often fulfill the role of emotional support not just for our patients but also for other oncology professionals. Though we are not employed to act as such, we dually assume the position of therapist and …
Quality Of Prenatal Care And Pregnancy Outcomes: Centering Pregnancy Versus Traditional Prenatal Care, Lisette M. Allender
Quality Of Prenatal Care And Pregnancy Outcomes: Centering Pregnancy Versus Traditional Prenatal Care, Lisette M. Allender
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Prenatal care provides a unique opportunity for healthcare providers to improve outcomes for women and their families and by extension community health. Therefore, prenatal care has the opportunity to become the cornerstone of healthcare in our nation. It can influence the health of the mother, newborn, and family unit long beyond the course of a 9-month pregnancy. However, evidence supporting positive outcomes from current tradition based models of prenatal care is lacking.
The current United States prenatal system limits the patient-provider relationship, does not empower the patient, lacks emphasis on education, and is not woman-centered. The aim of the study …

Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Background: Heel pain is a common clinical entity that requires appropriate diagnostic evaluation. Multiple clinical conditions are known to cause heel pain but plantar fasciitis is the most common. Calcaneal spurs are thought to be associated with heel pain and plantar fasciitis but conclusive studies to prove this are sparse. Plain radiography is usually the first line imaging modality for imaging patients with heel pain. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the gold standard for diagnosing plantar fasciitis but studies have shown ultrasound to be comparable in sensitivity and specificity. The aim is to establish whether a relationship exists between calcaneal spurs …

Quantitative Analysis Of Opioids And Cannabinoids In Wastewater Samples, Alethea Jacox
Quantitative Analysis Of Opioids And Cannabinoids In Wastewater Samples, Alethea Jacox
Student Theses
Wastewater-based epidemiology is an innovative approach that uses the analysis of human excretion products in wastewater to obtain information about exposure to drugs in defined population groups. We developed and validated an analytical method for the detection and quantification of opioids (morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, oxymorphone and hydromorphone), and cannabinoids (9-tetrahydrocannabinol, 11-nor 9-carboxy- tetrahydrocannabinol (THCCOOH) and THCCOOH-glucuronide) in raw influent wastewater samples by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Method validation included linearity (5–1 000 ng/L for opioids, 10–1 000 ng/L for cannabinoids), imprecision (<21.2%), accuracy (83%–131%), matrix effect (from –35.1% to –14.7%) and extraction efficiency (25%–84%), limit of detection (1–5 ng/L) and quantification (5–10 ng/L) and auto-sampler stability (no loss detected). River, sewage overflow and wastewater samples were collected in triplicate from different locations in New York City and stored at -20 C until analysis. River water samples were negative for all the compounds. Water from sewage overflow location tested positive for morphine (10.7 ng/L), oxycodone (4.2–23.5 ng/L), oxymorphone (4.8 ng/L) and hydromorphone (4.2 ng/L). Wastewater samples tested positive for morphine (133.0– 258.3 ng/L), oxycodone (31.1– 63.6 ng/L), oxymorphone (16.0–56.8 ng/L), hydromorphone (6.8–18.0 ng/L), hydrocodone (4.0– 12.8 ng/L) and THCCOOH (168.2– 772.0 ng/L). This method is sensitive and specific for opioids and marijuana determination in wastewater samples.

Designer drugs are structural analogs of Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Schedule I and II substances. They are synthesized to mimic the effects of illegal drugs of abuse and to bypass the provisions of drug regulations. Despite the increased availability of designer drugs, few studies have focused on specific analytical extraction techniques for their detection and quantification in biological samples. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most commonly used technique for sample preparation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the extraction efficiency of the various SPE columns with different sorbent materials for two designer drugs, cathinone and mephedrone in …

Curcumin and its chalcone derivatives inhibit the growth of human cancer cells. It is reported that replacement of two OH groups in curcumin with less polar groups like methoxy increases its anti-proliferative activity. In this study, we explored benzylidine cyclohexanone derivatives with non-polar groups, to see if they possess increased anti-cancer activity. Novel 2,6-bis benzylidine cyclohexanone analogues of curcumin were synthesized, and their inhibitory effects on gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (KYSE30) cancer cells were studied using an MTT assay. Cell apoptosis was detected by EB/AO staining, and cell cycle was analyzed by flow cytometry. Real-time PCR …

Cognitive neuroscientists rarely consider the influence that body position exerts on brain activity; yet, postural variation holds important implications for the acquisition and interpretation of neuroimaging data. Whereas participants in most behavioral and EEG experiments sit upright, many prominent brain imaging techniques (e.g., fMRI) require participants to lie supine. Here we demonstrate that physical comportment profoundly alters baseline brain activity as measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG)—an imaging modality that permits multipostural acquisition. We collected resting-state MEG data from 12 healthy participants in three postures (lying supine, reclining at 45°, and sitting upright). Source-modeling analysis revealed a broadly distributed influence of posture …

Multiple campaigns geared towards reducing public and self-stigma associated with depression, and increasing help-seeking behaviors have been launched in the past two decades. There has been an increase in promoting psychoeducation on the biological bases of mental illness. Recent international studies have documented that this increase in public knowledge has not reduced stigma. Indeed, growing evidence suggests that biological models, in comparison to other causal models of mental illness, decrease people’s sense of self-efficacy and self-control, and decrease positive expectancies of treatments and prognosis–among those with and without mental illness. Individuals who have come in contact with health services, however, …

Glass-lined stirred reactors and tanks are commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry because of their corrosion resistance, ease of cleanliness and minimization of product contamination. Most industrial glass-lined tank reactors are provided with a torispherical tank bottom and a retreat curve impeller with low impeller clearance from the vessel bottom. The power, P, dissipated by the impeller is a critical process parameter to mixing processes to achieve the desired mixing effect, especially since the power per unit volume, P/V, directly controls mass transfer processes and other mixing phenomena. However, little information has been published about the power dissipation and the …
