Added Sugar Consumption Among College Students, Maram Murad
Added Sugar Consumption Among College Students, Maram Murad
Theses & Dissertations
Added sugar consumption has been increasing in all age groups in the United States and worldwide, with the greatest increase in young adults. College-age years are a critical period in the young adult's life where many habits develop, including nutrition and food choices. An understanding of college-age students’ attitudes and behaviors toward added sugar consumption might help predict added sugar consumption within this population. This was a quantitative study of traditional-aged college students' added sugar consumption through a convenience sample at a private university in San Antonio, TX. A survey was administrated to undergraduate students at different classes. Subjects were …
Teaching And Learning Courageous Followership: An Action Research Study, Karen Walker Schwab
Teaching And Learning Courageous Followership: An Action Research Study, Karen Walker Schwab
Theses & Dissertations
Followership has been shown to be a developmental stage of leadership. Yet, there is a lack of followership theory in the health-care context. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore how introducing Chaleff’s dimensions of courageous followership influences the undergraduate nursing students’ views of the follower role and informs their nursing practice. Secondary research questions asked how knowledge of these dimensions influences the nursing students’ views while advocating, collaborating, and addressing lateral violence. Using purposeful sampling, 12 participants were recruited for this study. After attending a followership seminar, they completed online reflections and participated in individual …

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: Outcomes And Tumor Characteristics In Women Recalled From Screening, Michelle Y. Giwerc
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: Outcomes And Tumor Characteristics In Women Recalled From Screening, Michelle Y. Giwerc
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed and second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, accounting for 25% of cancer diagnoses and 15.4% of cancer deaths in developed countries. Thus, early detection of breast cancer through screening has become increasingly important in mortality reduction efforts. Yet, mammography has faced considerable controversy in balancing the benefits and harms associated with screening. Digital breast tomosynthesis has emerged as an important imaging technique which, compared to standard mammography alone, reduces recall rates and false positives, and improves cancer detection. Additional cancers detected with tomosynthesis have been poorly characterized in the literature to …
A Bittersweet Balance: Adjunct Therapy For Hyperglycemia In Critically Ill Patients, Caroline Argyros
A Bittersweet Balance: Adjunct Therapy For Hyperglycemia In Critically Ill Patients, Caroline Argyros
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Stress-induced hyperglycemia in critically ill patients negatively affects their recovery. Providers have struggled to balance the treatment of hyperglycemia with aggressive insulin therapy with the risk of hypoglycemia as an adverse effect. Both immobilization and continuous enteral nutrition are common in a critical care setting and have implications as contributors for further hyperglycemia due to decreased peripheral glucose uptake and worsening insulin resistance. We propose to determine if an aggressive early mobilization protocol and nutrition protocol in the form of bolus feeds will decrease the amount of insulin units needed to treat hyperglycemia in critically ill patients. To do so, …

Increased Expression Of The Tight Junction Protein Tjp1/Zo-1 Is Associated With Upregulation Of Taz-Tead Activity And An Adult Tissue Stem Cell Signature In Carfilzomib-Resistant Multiple Myeloma Cells And High-Risk Multiple Myeloma Patients, Irene Riz, Robert G. Hawley
Anatomy and Regenerative Biology Faculty Publications
Tight junction protein 1 (TJP1) has recently been proposed as a biomarker to identify multiple myeloma (MM) patients most likely to respond to bortezomiband carfilzomib-based proteasome inhibitor regimens. Herein we report increased expression of TJP1 during the adaptive response mediating carfilzomib resistance in the LP-1/Cfz MM cell line. Moreover, increased TJP1 expression delineated a subset of relapsed/refractory MM patients on bortezomib-based therapy sharing an LP-1/Cfzlike phenotype characterized by activation of interacting transcriptional effectors of the Hippo signaling cascade (TAZ and TEAD1) and an adult tissue stem cell signature. siRNA-mediated knockdown of TJP1 or TAZ/TEAD1 partially sensitized LP-1/Cfz cells to carfilzomib. …
Why It’S Not Ok For Doctors To Participate In Executions, Robert F. Johnson
Why It’S Not Ok For Doctors To Participate In Executions, Robert F. Johnson
Peer Reviewed Articles
A plea for direct physician participation in executions was presented by Sandeep Jauhar in a New York Times Op-Ed (“Why It’s OK for Doctors to Participate in Executions”—April 21, 2017). Jauhar’s article is not a discussion of the ethics of capital punishment. He describes his own opposition “as a matter of principle, as a doctor.” However, since capital punishment is legal in 31 states, with required physician participation in several, he acquiesces to a utilitarian stance rather than the principled approach he acknowledges is expected of a physician in this circumstance.

A Novel Mechanism Of Non- Feminizing Estrogens In Neuroprotection, Elizabeth B. Engler-Chiurazzi, Douglas F. Covey, James W. Simpkins
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Estrogens are potent and efficacious neuroprotectants both in vitro and in vivo in a variety of models of neurotoxicity. We determined the structural requirements for neuroprotection in an in vitro assay using a panel of more than 70 novel estratrienes, synthesized to reduce or eliminate estrogen receptor (ER) binding. We observed that neuroprotection could be enhanced by as much as 200-fold through modifications that positioned a large bulky group at the C2 or C4 position of the phenolic A ring of the estratriene. Further, substitutions on the B, C or D rings either reduced or did not markedly change neuroprotection. …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Background—A few other studies have reported the effects of anatomical and technical factors on clinical outcomes of carotid artery stenting (CAS). This study analyzed the effect of these factors on perioperative stroke/myocardial infarction/death after CAS. Methods—This was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of 409 of 456 patients who underwent CAS during the study period. A logistic regression analysis was used to determine the effects of anatomical and technical factors on perioperative stroke, death, and myocardial infarction (major adverse events [MAEs]). Results—The MAE rate for the entire series was 4.7% (19 of 409), and the stroke rate was 2.2% …

Primary Endovascular Repair Of Ilio-Caval Injury Encountered During Anterior Exposure Spine Surgery: Evolution Of The Paradigm, Patrick C. Bonasso, Brandon P. Lucke-Wold, Alexandre D'Audiffret, Lakshmikumar Pillai
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Background—Rates of major venous injury are now being reported at between 1% and 15%. Risk factors for injury include the previous spine surgery, level of exposure, and number of retractors used. To review and describe the evolution of our use of stent grafts for repair of lifethreatening ilio-caval injuries encountered during anterior exposure lumbosacral (L-S) spine surgery from rescue utilization after failed direct repair to preferred modality using occlusion balloons and covered stents akin to the modern management of the ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with endovascular aneurysm repair. Methods—Five-year retrospective review of all anterior and retroperitoneal spine procedures was …
